River of Doubt 2
The Roosevelt-Rondon Expedition refers to a scientific expedition that took place in 1913-1914 in the Amazon rain forest. Led by former US President Theodore Roosevelt and Brazilian explorer Colonel Candido Rondon, the expedition aimed to explore and map the River of Doubt (later renamed Roosevelt River) in the Brazilian state of Rondonia.
The expedition was arduous and faced numerous challenges, including navigating treacherous waters, fighting off deadly animals and insects, and dealing with diseases like malaria. Several members of the expedition fell ill and died, while others suffered injuries or had to turn back.
The expedition was also significant in terms of scientific discoveries. It documented various species of plants and animals that were previously unknown to science. The team encountered indigenous tribes along the way and made efforts to establish peaceful relations and gather information about their way of life.
The Roosevelt-Rondon Expedition played a crucial role in highlighting the environmental and cultural importance of the Amazon rainforest. It helped raise public awareness about the need for conservation efforts and paved the way for further scientific exploration in the region.

The Narváez expedition was a Spanish journey of exploration and colonization started in 1527 that intended to establish colonial settlements and garrisons in Florida. The expedition was initially led by Pánfilo de Narváez, who died in 1528. Many more people died as the expedition traveled west along the explored Gulf Coast of the present-day United States and into the American Southwest. Only four of the expedition's original members survived, reaching Mexico City in 1536. These survivors were the first known non-Native Americans to see the Mississippi River, and to cross the Gulf of Mexico and Texas. This podcast is about their brutal journey.

Children's Blizzard hit the U.S. plains states on January 12, 1888. The blizzard came unexpectedly on a relatively warm day, and many people were caught unaware, including children in one-room schoolhouses. What made the storm so deadly was the timing (during work and school hours), the suddenness of the storm, and the brief spell of warmer weather that preceded it. In addition, the very strong wind fields behind the cold front and the powdery nature of the snow reduced visibilities on the open plains to zero. People ventured from the safety of their homes to do chores, go to town, attend school, or simply enjoy the relative warmth of the day. As a result, thousands of people—including many schoolchildren—got caught in the blizzard.
