Care at the Centre: Voices from the Majority World At the heart of this series is care - the life-affirming, life-sustaining practice of honouring our interconnected relationships and our commitment to the wellbeing of ourselves, our environments, and each other. But in an increasingly hostile world, how do women, trans, and non-binary activists in the world visualize care and protection today at both the individual and organizational level? What are the specific risks to the lives and works of activists, human rights defenders and advocates from the majority world, and how do activists imagine and practice care in their unique contexts and locations? These are some of the questions we will explore in this six-part series on care produced by Urgent Action Fund Asia & Pacific. In the first episode of the series, we will talk about what it is that makes activists continue relentlessly on their paths, despite the risks, the challenges, and the threats they encounter on a daily basis by reflecting on their personal experiences and their socio-political and cultural locations and contexts that shaped their personhood and their activisms. Our gratitude to artists and activists from Nepal who lend their voices to bring to life the experiences and testimonies of activists featured in the Urgent Action Fund report - “How Can We Ground Ourselves in Care and Dance Our Revolution”. #81: Everyday is not Women’s Day (Re-release)

It’s that time of the year again! What are we marching for this year? Re-releasing this episode from a few years ago because, well… we are so tired of telling people to stop telling us “everyday is women’s day” when clearly it’s not, especially not in Nepal! Just look at how the Nepali state treats women - Nepali women are unequal by law because of the discriminatory citizenship provision in the constitution, the judiciary mostly takes side of male perpetrators in cases of sexual violence against women, and Nepali women’s mobility for better job opportunities abroad is severely restricted. So here’s our “tyaaau tyaaau” once again reminding everyone that giving women’s day discounts and a public holiday on March 8th will not make the world a better place for us womaniyas! Hope you enjoy this episode! #75 Abortion Rights in Nepal, Part 2

Abortion is legal in Nepal, but it is still criminalised. What does this mean for reproductive justice and what impact does it have on the reproductive health of women? Why are women still being driven to seek unsafe abortions? Why does our society still view abortion as something shameful and how does that affect the health and mental wellbeing of women? Reporter Srijana Khadka speaks to healthcare workers from Ramechhap and Syangja about the degree of safety and level of access of abortion services available to women. She also interviews the Executive Director of FWLD and leading advocate Sabin Shrestha who has been working in the area of legalisation and decriminalisation of abortion. This is the second part of our series on abortion rights in Nepal. We discuss about the cultural attitudes surrounding abortion in our homes, families and hospitals, and what that means for young Nepali women when they seek such services. And how does American politics around abortion rights actually could have an impact down the line in countries like Nepal. #74 Abortion Rights in Nepal, Part 1

It's been exactly twenty years since Nepal legalized abortion. There's been a lot of talk about abortion and women’s rights over their bodies since Roe v. Wade was overturned in the US. But have we ever had similar discussions over abortion rights in Nepal, accessibility to such services, and the cultural attitudes towards abortion in Nepali society, where abortion was legalized twenty years ago? In the first of two parts, we discuss the cultural attitudes surrounding abortion in our homes, families, and hospitals, and what that means for young Nepali women when they seek such services. And how could American politics around abortion rights actually have an impact down the line in countries like Nepal? ------------ Research by Shristi Shakya Theme music by Fleeke ------------ If you enjoy listening to Boju Bajai and want to support our work, please consider becoming our patron. #66 "Are you from Mongolia?"

हरेक वर्ष, without fail, male editors’ gaze will always find 'परम्परागत पोसाकमा XYZ जनजाति समुदायकी युवती' when it comes to festivals like उँधेौली, योमरी पुन्ही, ल्होसर and so on. However, issues and voices of the same indigenous community find little space in the Nepali newsroom and media at large, which are often led by Khas Arya men. Edited by Irina Giri. #64 Justice Delayed Is Justice Denied

Trigger warning: This episode contains mentions of rape, murder and suicide. This episode was produced by Boju Bajai in collaboration with Samata Foundation. The level of violence against Dalit girls, minors is frighteningly high. However, in the absence of sustained scrutiny from the media and the public at large, the police’s response to these cases follow a usual pattern marked by hesitation, if not an outright refusal, in registering the case, negligence in investigation, and dismissal of caste dynamics. The local representatives, who actively engage in or support out of court settlements, make the path to justice more arduous. When cases manage to reach court, there is no telling to when justice will be served. In this episode, we try to explore challenges faced by rape victims from marginalised communities when it comes to seeking justice. We also spoke to journalists Binod Pariyar, Rupa Gahatraj and Basanta Pratap Singh about the challenges involved in reporting such cases. Many case studies we discuss in this episode were derived from Dalit Human Rights Book 2077. Published by Samata Foundation, the book offers detailed coverage on Angira Pasi’s case, among others. The book is available at Samata Foundation’s office at Sanepa. Visit their website at https://samatafoundation.org Credit: Reported by journalists Bidhya Rai and Sanju Paudel. #62 Beyond Jargons

How do you talk about gender equality, when there is such a limited vocabulary to turn to in the Nepali language? How do people working at the community level communicate and disseminate ideas of gender equality and social justice from the jargon heavy handbooks and policy papers formulated by experts, and often in English? For #UnitedNationsDay, we explore the challenges of creating meaningful dialogue centering around the issue of gender equality in Nepal’s public sphere which have historically been built around male-dominated patriarchal networks. In the episode, we hear from individuals, who have been working in the area of gender equality and inclusion and what they are doing to ensure these conversations are accessible and resonate with Nepali women, across rural and urban settings. This episode has been produced by Boju Bajai in collaboration with the United Nations in Nepal. #61 Love, Sex, but no Dhoka

Cuffing season is here and so is the new Boju Bajai episode. In this episode, we talk about dating apps or as we like to call them over at Boju Bajai- 'sutne' apps. The heydays of love letters are long gone and it's the time of swiping and matching, of 'hey you up's and 'wyd?'s. But what hasn't changed is our desire to connect and find companionship. This episode explores how these desires were expressed before the internet and how it is done today. And there might or might not be dramatic readings of real life love letters in this episode! We also hear from some of our listeners about their experiences - the good, the bad, and the weird. Thank you so much to everyone who sent us stories. This episode really wouldn't have been possible without them. This episode was reported by Nikita Tripathi. Nikita is a media producer based in Kathmandu and likes to walk.

Trigger warning: This episode includes mentions of mental health disorders, anxiety, and suicide. This episode is dedicated to mental health — about learning to take care of our mental well-being, initiating difficult conversations with our families about our struggles, and seeking help when we need it. For this episode, reporter Nikita Tripathi spoke to Kripa Sigdel, a psychologist and a faculty member at the Department of Psychology at Padma Kanya Campus; psychologist Renasha Ghimire, and Prashamsha Pandey, a mental health advocate, and therapy client. Information on mental health conditions and related services are more readily available to the urban population, but many, especially in the rural parts of the country, have limited access to such vital resources. Nepal’s public health spending thus far has grossly overlooked mental health while individuals risk being stigmatized for their mental health conditions by their family and society at large. This episode was reported by Nikita Tripathi. Nikita is a media producer based in Kathmandu and likes to walk. Irina Giri edited the episode and Fleeke performed the cover of Fiona Apple's 'Every Single Night'. #54 Cold Takes by Boju Bajai feat. Shova Sharma

On May 23, President Bidhya Devi Bhandari promulgated Nepal Citizenship (first amendment) Ordinance 2021. The heated debate on the ordinance has slowed down. So it's time for our cold takes on Nepal's latest citizenship law, featuring journalist Shova Sharma. She is a reporter at Setopati. She covers politics and parliament and has written extensively on citizenship laws. She explains what the ordinance means for women’s right to confer citizenship to their children, and how the Nepali state continues to treat women as 'दोस्रो दर्जाको' नागरिक.

How is a community's history, culture and identity linked to their language? And how do people process and come to terms with feeling uprooted when their language slowly starts dying. Journalist Sewa Bhattarai talks to researcher and editor Kailash Rai about her changing relationship with her mother tongue Dungmali, Nepali language and the Nepali state. Dungmali is one of the 123 languages spoken in Nepal. The last census listed Dungmali as an endangered language since it is now only spoken by about 6000 people, mostly Kiratis in different areas of Bhojpur district in eastern Nepal. Journalist Madhuri Mahato spoke to women who have become the head of their family in the absence of their fathers, sons, and husbands.

In this episode, reporter Nikita Tripathi talked to Shreeti Shrestha. #47 Guff Gaff with Rubeena Mahato

We spoke to Rubeena Mahato, a public policy specialist, about meaningful representation and inclusion in a deeply unequal society like ours. This conversation was recorded for Guff Gaff with Boju Bajai, a web-series presented by Book Bus Nepal. The series was produced by Satori Center for the Arts, Quixote’s Cove, and Boju Bajai. We have tried to explore the state of public transport and how it represents the contestations and conflicts experienced by individuals (especially women) and communities on a daily basis. #38 Guff Gaff with Shubha Kayastha: Smile, Please - Sarkar Is Watching!

In this episode, we talk to Shubha Kayastha, a queer feminist affiliated to Body&Data, an organization that works in the area of internet freedom and digital rights. We asked Shubha what a feminist internet might mean or look like in the context of Nepal. We also talk about state surveillance (and other forms of surveillance) and how it almost always puts marginalized communities more at risk. How can we protect our privacy and our freedom of speech when the state begins to encroach upon our liberties, especially during the time of a pandemic that requires varying degrees and forms of surveillance in order to contain the contagion. Earlier this month, right after we recorded this episode, the Upper House endorsed Bill on Special Service allowing phone tapping without a court order. #34 Guff gaff with Rukshana Kapali

For International Transgender Visibility Day we spoke to queer rights activist Rukshana Kapali about language, visibility and why Nepal’s queer movement needs diverse narratives to move forward. At the young age of 20, Rukshana has sparked some critical conversations around how Nepali media and the Nepali state views transgender people. And we strongly feel Ruskhana should be on all the high achievers' lists of the world! In this episode, we take a look at the stand-up scene in Nepal and the type of content that is being produced and consumed by a large, easily influenced, and relatively young audience. Are our comedians just assuming their audience is dumb, or are they dumbing down their audience? We also talk a bit about our evergreen, never ageing hero, Mr. Bhuwan KC. Ohoo! Bhuwan Kc? Bhrikuti lovingly calls her periods, Rajaswala didi, but does didi love her back? In this episode, we talk about women's relationship to their bodies and how Nepali newspapers are courting and publishing an increasing number of personal narrative pieces written by women writers. While personal narratives are inspiring and spark important conversations, are they enough to bring about structural change? What more can Nepali media do besides publishing more content written by women writers?

#22 Yo! Yo desh kasko ho?

The world's "best constitution" doesn't give equal citizenship rights to Nepali women cos some citizens are more equal than others, haina bro? A lot happened after we recorded this episode, all of which we couldn't include. So here's a mini explainer: - Amid uncertainty surrounding the amendment to the Citizenship Act, the Home Ministry on April 2 issued a circular to all 77 chief district officers across the country, telling them to grant citizenship by descent to those individuals whose parents are citizens by birth. - And then some smart ass uncle filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court to not implement the ministry’s decision on citizenship, leading to an interim order to the government to stop the implementation. - A few days later, the Supreme Court paved the way for individuals, whose parents are Nepali citizens by birth, to acquire citizenship by descent. (Boohoo, uncle!) - For now, hundreds of people without citizenships are able to apply for papers. But the issue of citizenship through mothers remains and we will have to wait and see what our lawmakers do about amending these laws.
