Host Adam Burke stepped into The Bettor’s Box one final time as he is on to the next chapter in his life after this weekend. Adam started with his thanks, gratitude, and appreciation for so many that have been a part of this podcast and this website. Baseball still had to take center stage, as Adam talked about the Trade Deadline, home/road splits, some interesting stats, and some takeaways that everybody should keep in mind from the past and present editions of The Bettor’s Box. After a look Down the Lines to cover line movements, Adam shared a couple of picks and then previewed four series for this weekend. He talked about Dodgers vs. Diamondbacks, Astros vs. Giants, Reds vs. Mets, and Red Sox vs. Rays, along with some words of caution about a post-Trade Deadline hangover for some teams. Adam and Brian gave some picks to win, talked about good bets for matchups and some group play, and other considerations for this tournament, including the winning score and how things played out the last time the British Open was at this particular course.

They’ll talk a lot more college basketball on next week’s show.

Host Adam Burke and guest Brian Blessing always talk about a lot of different topics on Tuesdays and that was no different today. The guys started by shooting the breeze a little bit and then focused on the lower totals in the NFL due to weather and the COVID spikes across the country that are making it tough for leagues to get started and for bettors to decide what and when to bet. Host Adam Burke was asked by listeners to do something on Mondays to talk about college football and he’s done that for a few weeks in a row. He did it again on November 16 to discuss his updated power ratings, observations, box score nuggets, and games that are likely to see some line moves as we go throughout the week. It took just over 40 minutes, but it was a lot of good content and good preparation for the week ahead. Adam talked about several big adjustments to his power ratings, including Michigan, Penn State, Minnesota, South Carolina, Stanford, USC, and Iowa. He also talked about how his lines compare with the betting markets and even lamented a couple of good overlay opportunities that he missed. He talked about some box score news and notes that could have influence in the betting markets and should at least have some bearing on how you evaluate the teams. Lastly, Adam talked about the philosophies of teams now as they play out the string or keep pushing forward towards their goals.

Host Adam Burke is having a solid season in the Circa Sports Million II with a 26-18-1 mark through nine weeks worth of picks. Before diving into his picks and analysis for Week 10, Adam took some time to talk about what is happening in the contest as a whole, as the field looks to bounce back from its worst week ever in the Circa Sports Million at 41.19%. He gave an update on the start to the third quarter and the standings and leaders. Then it was time to focus on the ATS.IO-2 entry and the five picks that will make up the Week 10 card. Adam shared three very likely picks and a list of four leans with listeners, as we await some news on the COVID and injury fronts before the picks are officially locked in with our proxy on Saturday. He flew solo to recap what we saw from the college football weekend and how it impacted his power ratings and his thought processes for Week 11. Adam started out talking about the ATS App and why you should download it and then launched into a discussion of the teams that he adjusted in his power ratings, including significant adjustments for Georgia, Oklahoma State, Cincinnati, Michigan, Marshall, Maryland, and Mississippi State. Using his power ratings, Adam put together his spreads for the college football games this week and talked about the games where he is off the market and how he intends to bet on them or stay away from them, depending on the reasons why his lines are so much different. When we had to move Kyle Hunter’s segments from Monday to Wednesday, listeners voiced their displeasure. So, that’s what Adam has done the last two weeks and he had a ton of information to pass along today. A lot of changes are coming and Adam used his platform on The Bettor’s Box to discuss those changes. After talking a little bit about the playoffs, the new format, and the end of the regular season and how to handle it, he launched into several points of emphasis that will change his MLB handicapping philosophies for next season. The focus will be shifting away from the regression analysis handicapping and will be less about the stats and what they are telling us and more about looking for expectation based on pitch selection, matchups, contact quality, and a different way of studying the game that we all love. Adam also highlighted some league trends that could carry over to next year and how those have negatively impacted this season’s capping and will have to be accounted for next season.

Host Adam Burke was back with a rather contemplative edition of The Bettor’s Box on Tuesday September 15. He talked a lot about evaluating how this season has gone and about the processes and methods that he uses to handicap. After taking a look at offense for the past week to offer up some thoughts on what to watch for as the regular season comes to a close, Adam wondered aloud whether smaller sample sizes are worth factoring into the handicap. As an ardent believer in sabermetrics, sample sizes are critically important, but it may simply be that MLB teams go through form cycles like teams in all of the other sports. Along with those thoughts, Adam talked about handicapping mindsets of teams with just 12 days left in the regular season. He also talked about line moves in the marketplace and what he has his sights set on for some potential plays on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.

On the NASCAR side, we actually have three stock car races at Kentucky, as the Xfinity Series will run on Thursday night and Friday night and then the Cup Series will run on Sunday afternoon. Adam and Brian started on the golf side at Detroit Golf Club with the Rocket Mortgage Classic. This is just the second year of this event, so course history handicappers don’t have a lot to go on. Adam and Brian shared several picks and players to watch for matchups, top five, top 10, and top 20 props. Then the guys moved on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Brickyard 400, which is actually the Big Machine Hand Sanitizer 400. MLB teams released their 60-man rosters on Sunday, which gave Adam a lot to talk about as he pondered prospects and their impact on this unique 2020 season. Those roster decisions could impact futures markets as teams look to get their youngsters some reps at the MLB level. Adam also discussed totals betting, money lines, and why pregame bets may not be the best course of action. Another round of 15 games comes your way Tuesday-Thursday in the KBO and we haven’t forgotten about Korean baseball just yet. After thrilling conclusions to the RBC Heritage and the GEICO 500, the guys talked about what those two sports could have in store for us this week. Adam and Brian shared their picks and analysis for the Travelers Championship and some betting strategies as the tournament goes along. Then it was all about NASCAR and a doubleheader at Pocono with the Pocono Organics 325 and the Pocono 350, as the Cup Series runs on Saturday and Sunday on the 2.5-mile triangle track. On this April 28 show, Adam and Brian went back over the 2020 NFL Draft and some of their thoughts on the winners and the losers and how the betting markets have responded. We’ve got a huge Saturday on tap at Oaklawn Park down in Arkansas with the Arkansas Derby x2 on Saturday. Two divisions are required with so many trainers eager to race their three-year-olds in this Kentucky Derby prep. Adam and Brian broke down both divisions for this Grade 1 race and talked about their picks and how to handicap the Saturday slate.

Some listener questions came in that led to a good discussion about being organized as a bettor with what could be a very busy fall on the horizon. A listener question regarding last season’s juiced baseball and its impact on regression analysis handicapping was a good one. Adam talked about the statistical outliers for both starters and relievers last year and how they did a number on his handicapping. He also addressed what last year’s outliers mean going forward and why it could be really tough to get started with betting on baseball this season.

On the Friday April 24 edition of BangTheBook Radio, host Adam Burke and professional handicapper John Ryan gave their assessments of the first round of the NFL Draft. They talked about winners and losers and what it means for the betting odds and the perceptions of these teams heading into the new season, assuming we get one. After talking about which teams did well and which teams did poorly, the guys looked at some prop bets for tonight’s two rounds, as they looked at the next wide receiver off the board, where D’Andre Swift will go, and looked at the draft possibilities for guys like Jalen Hurts and Jacob Eason.

Host Adam Burke is ready for the 2020 NFL Draft to begin and he’ll finally get his wish today. Before Joe Burrow’s name gets announced, however, Adam got together with professional handicapper John Ryan to talk about some NFL Draft props of interest for this evening’s first round. The guys started their discussion about the odds for the number of players of a certain position taken in the first round. The WR discussion is such a big part of this year’s draft, so the guys spent time on that, including the over/under for number of first-round wideouts. It is always a treat to chat with Thor Nystrom from Rotoworld and especially during NFL Draft time. Thor’s work is second to none with regards to ranking the players and because he knows his way around the betting world, it was a perfect opportunity to get him on with host Adam Burke on this edition of BangTheBook Radio. Brad already has his power ratings, spreads for every game, and has been releasing team pages and a lot of information. The guys talked about how adjustments are made off of last season’s numbers. They also talked about projecting out season win totals and discussed how home field advantage would be affected in an environment without fans.

On the Thursday April 16 edition of BangTheBook Radio, host Adam Burke shared his thoughts and some reviews on baseball movies. There are a few hotter takes and some stronger recommendations, but Adam ran through more than 15 baseball movies with some notes and nuggets about each one and the things he likes and dislikes about those flicks. Major League, Major League II, The Sandlot, Rookie of the Year, Little Big League, Angels in the Outfield, Moneyball, 42, The Natural, Eight Men Out, A League of Their Own, Field of Dreams, For the Love of the Game, The Rookie, and more were all discussed and analyzed to give listeners something to watch during this brutal period of quarantine. Today’s topic was to look at wOBA-xwOBA, which is a Statcast metric derived from exit velocity and launch angle. This is a metric that does become the catalyst for line movement in the markets and it is something you should definitely know about. Adam tried to navigate a challenging topic by looking at examples of pitchers in line for positive or negative regression, including several names that we’ve heard on past segments regarding ERA, FIP, xFIP, or Cluster Luck. The fall could be special with several golf majors, the Ryder Cup, the Kentucky Derby, the MLB playoffs, plus the football seasons. Or so we hope. Adam and Brian talked a little bit about that and about locking money up in the betting markets for long periods of time. The guys also had story time at the end of the show.

On the Monday April 6 edition of BangTheBook Radio, host Adam Burke answered a listener question about WAR, the calculation of the statistic, and how it accounts for different positions. If you ever wanted to know how WAR works, this was a great introduction into one of the most encompassing statistics in the world of baseball today. Adam then followed up on Thursday’s discussion regarding Cluster Luck to bring it down to an individual level and highlight some pitchers that either got lucky or unlucky with runners in scoring position relative to the league averages or their own numbers. We’re building comprehensive statistical profiles of a lot of pitchers so that we’ll be ready to go when the games get back underway.

On the Thursday April 2 edition of BangTheBook Radio, host Adam Burke talked about the concept of Cluster Luck. Performance with the bases empty and performance with runners in scoring position can really make or break a season and Adam wanted to use that concept to seek out some positive and negative regression candidates coming into the 2020 season, whenever that may be. Adam had several compelling teams to discuss on today’s segment, including the New York Yankees, Texas Rangers, Philadelphia Phillies, Milwaukee Brewers, Tampa Bay Rays, and Cincinnati Reds because of their outcomes and why he is looking to buy or sell those teams.

Horse racing has become the flavor of the month with all other sports down for the count, but Brian Blessing has been betting horses every day for a very long time and we’re lucky to have his expertise on BangTheBook Radio. Host Adam Burke had Brian on the show to help with some more horse tips, including some tips on how to read the form. The guys focused in on Race 8 at Tampa Bay Downs for Wednesday April 1, which you can follow along with at this link. Adam and Brian talked about some different elements of the race, going from dirt to turf, and what to look for in terms of the class and strength of past race fields.

On the Monday March 30 edition of The Bettor’s Box, host Adam Burke tried to keep his regular show format as if we had games to discuss. He started with a look Beyond the Box Score to talk about first inning scoring and how to handle bullpens, including the thought process that goes into making a 1st 5 bet or a full-game wager. He also talked about what to look for with regards to odds movement during the Down the Lines segment, with an interesting discussion on why the lines move the way that they do sometimes, especially with buyback in the other direction. The MLB betting market is a living thing for the most part and it shows through the line movement.

Is it selfish to be sad that today is not Opening Day? According to host Adam Burke, not at all. It’s just one part of the greater sadness that we are experiencing around the world. Adam had no script and no notes for today’s show, but he had some thoughts and just talked on today’s program. Baseball has given a lot to those of us that follow it in a variety of different ways and that was a key theme on today’s segment. A normal segment will be back on Monday with more stats and sabermetrics and breakdowns, but it just didn’t seem right today.

Host Adam Burke was joined by Brian Blessing, the host of Sportsbook Radio and Vegas Hockey Hotline, for this week’s Tuesday edition of BangTheBook Radio. Adam and Brian took a look at what’s been happening out in the NFL futures market with regards to free agency and trades, as we’ve seen a ton of player movement to this point. Most of the show was dedicated to horse racing. As one of the only games in town during the coronavirus outbreak, Adam and Brian took a deep dive into horse racing, as they talked about how to read the program and past performances. They talked about what is important to look at with the program and how to tell if a horse looks to be on the rise or the decline.

On today’s edition of The Bettor’s Box, host Adam Burke continued painting a comprehensive picture of how he breaks down starting pitchers, including a focus on some of the ones that we have already talked about. Today’s topic of discussion was about contact quality against. There are some important metrics, like exit velocity, Hard Hit%, and Barrel rates that are a big part of Adam’s handicapping and he explained the reasons why on this podcast. Adam looked at extremes on the exit velocity sides both ways, talked about what constitutes a barreled ball and what makes them so bad, and mentioned additional names of pitchers that are on his “bet on” and “fade” lists for the upcoming 2020 baseball season.

After taking a look at ERA, FIP, and xFIP regression candidates on Monday, host Adam Burke peeled back another layer of the proverbial onion on Thursday to talk about LOB% and the positive and negative regression candidates with that stat. All of this works together to form the picture of a pitcher to buy or sell for the upcoming season. Adam looked at the top 15 in LOB%, the bottom 15 in LOB%, and then talked about whether or not their numbers are sustainable or if those numbers are likely to move one way or another. Adam highlighted six negative regression guys and six positive regression guys during this segment.

Brian Blessing was gracious enough to join host Adam Burke for a Tuesday edition of BangTheBook Radio. The guys spent the majority of their time looking at the NFL, with the free agent frenzy, the trades, the adjustments to the season win total market, and the interesting division races that have emerged through all the transactions. They discussed Tom Brady and Philip Rivers and the Stefon Diggs and DeAndre Hopkins trades and so much more. They also took a few minutes to talk about some horse racing, with the Kentucky Derby pushed back to September 5 and how that could impact the Road to the Kentucky Derby and why the Travers Stakes could hold some serious importance this summer.

Host Adam Burke took listeners into The Bettor’s Box to chat about some pitchers to have your eye on once the baseball season actually rolls around. Adam took a look at some of the biggest ERA-FIP discrepancies out there from 2019 and talked about why they are a thing and what they mean going forward. These are names that you’ll want to file away for the start of the season and also for your fantasy baseball drafts when you are eyeing those pitchers in the later rounds. Adam looked at potential positive regression candidates and potential negative regression candidates based on the statistics from last year. Write these names down and keep them in mind. We’ll be talking about a lot more of them as we go forward.

With so much uncertainty out there in the sports world and in the world in general, it can be a little bit tricky to figure out what to focus on in a betting sense. Surprisingly, that wasn’t the case on today’s edition of The Bettor’s Box, our MLB betting podcast. Host Adam Burke had a lot to talk about and a lot of different things to say about what he looks for when betting on baseball and injury updates for Spring Training. Adam discussed which Spring Training stats matter and which ones have some actual use as we head into the regular season. There are a few pitchers that stand out and Adam made sure to mention those and whether or not he believes what he is seeing.
