Not only is she the hottest woman I have ever seen, but she is the most beautiful, on the inside, human being, I have ever encountered. This week’s guest is my stunning wifey, Kirsten. I’m actually not even going to break down any specific elements of our convo in this introduction, but I will share the experience I went through as she shared some of her and our story. I was consistently on the verge of tears as she shared, in admiration of her courage, her patience, her grace, and her faithfulness over the years we have been together. I was overwhelmed as she reflected on all that God has brought her and me, and our family, though, and I was full of deep gratitude for a God that uses broken vessels to further His kingdom, how He gives us Beauty for Ashes. Enjoy! Functionally, he has spent the last two decades serving with various ministries and now serves full time alongside YWAM in loving his neighbors in authentic ways. He also loves to create, whether it is his podcast "Where did you see God", writings, or videos.  He loves spending time with his wife and kids, and they see their home -- which God gave them in a crazy way -- as an important piece of how they love their neighbors as a lifestyle.

EP. 020 Dr. David Bertrand [cold showers, peak performance, love the process]

Show notes can be found at claysteves.com/podcast Dr. Bertrand is an SMU professor and expert on leadership development and coaching. A Dallas native, he has held a passion and drive for leadership, coaching, education, and sport since early on in his life, and has now made it his main objective to use that knowledge and expertise to develop and support others in rising to their greatest potential. Dr. Bertrand recently completed doctoral studies at SMU and his dissertation was awarded a 1st place prize at the annual conference of Harvard's Institute of Coaching, the premier global gathering of thought leaders concerning the nexus of executive coaching and leadership. Dr. Bertrand works with leaders at the highest levels, whether it’s executive teams or Division I head coaches and their staff. This convo rocked and activated me. We covered a broad range of topics, from a children’s book to Wimhoff breathing to cold showers to David’s personal, 3 part definition of leadership. David unpacked who in this world is more in love with the process than the result, a section that made our producer go, “WHOA…” in the background! On the activation side, out of this convo, I literally went and rearranged a portion of my schedule next week to prioritize some specific relationships.  Enjoy!

EP. 019 | Ellen Porter [brave love, adoption, trusting God's timing]

Show notes can be found at https://www.claysteves.com/podcast Ellen is a wife and a mother to 4 children, two of them adopted. She is an adoption advocate and avid book lover. To Ellen, the heroism of women who place their children for adoption leaves her in awe each day. Because of this, she started an organization in 2012, named BraveLove, to change the perception of adoption through honest, informative, and hopeful communication that conveys the heroism and bravery a birth mother displays when she places her child with a loving family through adoption. Ellen and I swim out to deep waters pretty quickly, and I admire the vulnerability and strength she shared with me, talking through the challenges of being a mom of 4 kids, 5 years old and younger, and leading a non-profit.  Ellen taught me about Ebenezer’s, and I’m sure many of you know what that is, but I did not. But I have actually been trying to apply the principle more clearly in my life since she and I had this convo. And of course, we talk about the founding and heart of BraveLove, which is an organization I have had the privilege of partnering with and supporting over the years, and I admired Ellen’s perspective of stewardship with the mission and organization of Bravelove. Even though she was the founder and one of the early leaders, she maintained humility and awareness that it was not hers, rather, it was hers to steward. Great wisdom and perspective I want to continually apply in my own life.  Enjoy!

EP. 018 | Steve Largent [father figures, forgiveness, processing decisions]

Show notes can be found at claysteves.com/podcast Steve was an NFL football player, enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Steve was a wide receiver for the expansion franchise Seattle Seahawks and spent his entire 14 seasons professional football career with the team. Upon retirement, he held several all-time receiving records and is considered one of the greatest wide receivers of all time.  After retirement from football, Steve decided to enter the political sphere. He ran for Congress and served from 1994 to 2002 in the U.S. House of Representatives for Oklahoma. In 2002, he stepped down to run for Governor of Oklahoma, and we unpack, a little of that season and election in this conversation. Steve takes us back to the very beginning of his life, and we unpack together the impact of his father leaving him, his mom, and his siblings at a young age. We talk about some of the figures that stepped into the father role for him, and one of the most powerful parts for me was when Steve shared some of the moments later in life when he began to examine and explore those early years without a father, how that void affected him, and the impact it had on his life. I admire the courage he had to process all of that in such an open and intentional way through his life.  Additionally, he shares a specific story about reaching out to his father years later that has challenged me in some of my own story and caused me to be praying about some potential actions I need to take in my own life. I am confident many of you know Steve for his remarkable achievements on the football field, but I hope this convo helps you know the man behind the legend and equips you as you pursue your unique calling and life.

EP. 015 | Jenna Worthen [making a local impact, moms who work]

Show notes can be found at claysteves.com/podcast Jenna is a mom who works as the Founder and CEO of a political and nonprofit consulting company focused on intentional development strategies. She is incredibly nerdy in all things political, and primarily focuses her time on telling stories well and showing gratitude to key stakeholders and investors in causes for good. She cares deeply about helping others feel known and loved. A steno pad lover, she tired of the ugly generic models and created the Task Keeper notepads and task management system. She owns an urban farm with her husband, three kids [two boys and one girl], and a dog who rescued them named Nicey. This was an eye-opening convo where I was coached up and challenged to be a part of creating a different reality for moms in the workforce. We explore Jenna’s early exposure, as a child, to the political process and how that shaped her perspective of accessibility and influence, and how she desires to steward that responsibility for herself and others, and how she discerns when to leverage that influence. She walks me through her journey of being fed up with being a working mom in a world without working dads, which led her to found the Mom Who Works movement. This conversation led to actionable steps, that you and I can take, in our businesses, to create an environment for moms to thrive, and dominant, in the workforce. I want to express that I am thankful for Jenna’s courage to be a safe space for me to explore this arena, to learn, and to equip me, as a man, to be a part of the solution for all the incredible moms who work out there. Enjoy!

EP. 014 | Kirsten Steves [joy and suffering, adoption and foster care]

Show notes can be found at claysteves.com/podcast I have had the privilege of conversing with numerous, exceptional guests on this podcast, but unquestionably, beyond any shadow of a doubt, this week’s guest is my favorite. I know you will, but please slow down, snuggle in, and enjoy!

EP. 012 | Daniel Nayeri [utility in beauty, unstoppable courage, and refugees]

Show notes can be found at claysteves.com/podcast.  The first 12 years of Daniel’s life is one of the most remarkable stories I have ever encountered and he recently shared this journey in the autobiography titled, Everything Sad is Untrue (A True Story). Daniel was born in Iran in a wealthy and prominent Muslim family. His mother’s unexpected conversion to Christianity disrupted their comfortable life. What ensued was death threats from the secret police, his mother’s unstoppable courage and unwavering belief in life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, his mother sacrificing everything to follow Jesus, fleeing the country under the cover of darkness, leaving his father behind, spending years as a refugee seeking asylum before immigrating to Oklahoma at age eight with his mother and sister. In this convo, we explore his perspective on being a refugee and how that framed his perspective of the United States of America. We talk about what are the “truest things about you,” and I promise the answer his 12-year-old self provides is not what you would expect! After you listen to this convo, I strongly encourage you to grab a copy of his book and give it a read. It will only illuminate and add to the value of this convo. If you, like me, often pursue the comfort of this world instead of the calling of following Jesus, his story will challenge you to your core. Enjoy!   Daniel: Facebook, Instagram, Website

Show notes can be found at claysteves.com/podcast Lacie Lowry is an award-winning journalist and one of the morning anchors for News 9 in Oklahoma City. In this convo, she actually shares what career she initially pursued after college, and the unexpected path God took her onto her calling. According to Lacie, she never takes herself too seriously even though her job is pretty serious. We dive into deep waters on this topic, exploring the gravity of the role of a news reporter during the pandemic and quarantine of 2020, the toll it took on her personally, and the journey she traveled to gain some new, healthy releases to deal with and cope with the heightened level of stress. In a lighter moment, she taught me what part of the face one should focus their makeup on if you are in a rush and the camera is about to turn on!  Lacie loves sharing stories, meeting new people and likes to get outdoors as a form of therapy.  I learned a lot and I know you will too. EP. 010 | Geoff Todd [power of moments, less but more, and complex to simple]

Show notes can be found at claysteves.com/podcast Geoff Todd loves Jesus, his wifey, his daughters, his family, coaching up others to their fullest potential, creating meaningful content in our world, a good day of fresh powder on the slopes & the sound of a shot that's nothing but net.  In 1998 Geoff (GT) helped found Oklahoma City K-Life as their first Chapter Director and is now on the K-Life National HQ Team as the Regional Director for Texas. He also serves as the Director of Kanakuk’s K-Kauai Family Kamp. As you will hear in this convo, GT has a natural gift with weaving words and creating sticky phrases, but I really enjoyed learning the humble posture and intentional process he goes through to prepare his heart and mind to create effective and lasting content. Geoff has had a generational Kingdom impact on thousands of kids and families over the decades through his joy and intentionality. I have a deep mahalo for the leader and man Geoff is in this world, and I believe the wisdom he shares in this convo can have that effect on you too. Enjoy!

EP. 008 | Kay Gackle [processing trauma, joy and sorrow, and the power of counseling]

Show notes can be found at claysteves.com/podcast  Kay Gackle is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist both in the state of Oklahoma and Florida. She has additional training in EMDR for trauma work, Gottman method for marriages, and SYMBIS for premarital counseling.  Kay has a passion to see people find freedom and get healing from past trauma.  Her passions also include helping parents by partnering and equipping them with learning tools that can help them effectively raise their children.  One highlight in this convo for me was learning about how joy and sorrow come from the same place in our brains, and our ability to deeply experience these emotions are inversely proportional to each other. I am a vocal proponent of professional counseling. It has helped me heal and equipped me along my journey, and the wisdom Kay shares in this convo only reinforces my belief in the benefit of having a healthy, thoughtful, centered counselor in one's life.
