They are encouraging people to spread awareness in hopes that maybe potentially one day there will be a cure.

The immune system counts on the microbiome for functionality.
By taking care of the gut, we can recover better from COVID, per the studies, but it goes beyond this. A healthy gut = a healthy brain!
So, how do we keep the gut healthy?
The first thing to do is to get rid of all antibiotic-antimicrobial products (including hand sanitizers and antibacterial soaps). This needs to be done, as soon as possible, even though you may not feel sick. Many products don't give the bacteria time to get back to some baseline, and killing off both the good and the bad bacteria can result in a very bad situation. The key thing here is to go back to basic hygiene. Use hand soap, not 'hand sanitizer', and wash your hands with soap and water.
Eat only organic foods.

We dive into this on today’s episode of the Raw Food Health Empowerment Podcast.
I don’t watch prices but my family has shared with me that the price of apples has increased by 75% in Orlando. The big bag of organic frozen blueberries at Whole Foods used to cost $8 and are now $10, a 25% increase.
Food prices overall have climbed by 8.8% yearly, while the cost of agricultural chemicals such as fertilizers and pesticides has increased by approximately 50% in the previous year. A lot of those chemicals come from Russia.
Folks are concerned obesity may be on the rise as a result of rising food expenses. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the percentage of the population classified as obese has grown by 11.4%, affecting almost 42% of Americans.

Nori is a seaweed that comes from the ocean. It is high in prebiotic fiber that you don’t get in other land plant foods. Nori is an excellent source of iodine for thyroid health and vitamin B12.

Our gut bacteria is distinct and our gut bacteria affects our brain and mood so it makes sense that our brains would be distinct as well. This is my understanding of neurodiversity. According to Wikipedia, “neurodiversity refers to variation in the human brain regarding sociability, learning, attention, mood and other mental functions in a non-pathological sense. It was coined in 1998 by sociologist Judy Singer, who helped popularize the concept along with journalist Harvey Blume.”
Today, I am talking with Anuradha Kowtha, a catalyst, educator, and consultant, who works with individuals, small businesses and organizations. Anuradha’s journey working across both public and private sectors has led Anuradha to see systemic issues like hierarchy and exploitation and find ways to address systemic issues at their root cause. The thread that runs through Anuradha’s work is illuminating and liberating individuals and small teams from the indoctrination and cookie-cutter thinking that comes from capitalism and colonialism, so they can provide bold and innovative solutions rooted in justice to their clients and communities.

11/16/2021 • 51 minutes, 13 seconds Can Family Members Be the Cause of Chronic Stress Within Multicultural Families? My mom laughs whenever I say she will live to 120. I am convinced it's possible due to the Blue Zones study and how my mom lives but what the book left out was racism and how it affects the Black community and our longevity potential.
A study of 55 Black women in the U.S. found that those with more racial discrimination experiences showed proportionally greater response in brain regions associated with threat vigilance and regulation of threat response. This is what chronic stress looks like.
This is something nutrition cannot fix. Racism has a trauma-like effect on Black women's health. The researchers concluded from the study that being regularly attuned to the threat of racism can tax important body-regulation tools and worsen brain health. Per other studies, this kind of chronic stress can increase the risk of mental health disorders and additional future brain health problems.
It’s one thing when we have to deal with this stress out in society and at work but when we have to deal with it within our own families and in our home, it really works against longevity.
On this episode of the Raw Food Health Empowerment Podcast, I have a special guest Hannah Pillow who has spent a large part of her life living amongst a wide range of cultures. She was married into a Pakistani family, grew up in a South African Indian family, lived in Istanbul, Turkey for two years and now she’s married into a British family and living in the UK.
Having not just traveled, but immersing herself in other cultures, she has learned that we are all a lot more similar than we realise. This is why she started a podcast. She wants us all to open our eyes to how similar we all are while appreciating the things that make us unique.
I met Hannah in a community I am a part of full of women of color business owners and I resonated with her story of having hard conversations about race with her mother in law and other family members.

Are you doing all the things for a long healthy life but don’t have the will to live beyond 70? We have research showing us the way to live to 120 and beyond but if you don’t want to live that long, all the healthy habits won’t make a difference. Our mind is super powerful. Yogis can decide when they leave their body and folks die within the time frame the doctors tell them how many days they have left to live. This is the power of the mind. Dr. Joe Dispenza has written many books about this among other doctors and scientists in the wellness space.
Why choose to stay? I say stay because if God has not deemed it fit that it’s your natural end then you still have work to do on this planet.
I have spoken to some women in my community who don’t have the will or energy to continue because they’ve had a really bad, nasty divorce. When I started my high raw vegan journey, I did it with a husband who had gone vegan a little bit before me, he knew how to make delicious tasting plant rich meals, and we lived on our own and had the funds and desire to eat as clean as possible. We even invested in our first juicer together in our first year of marriage.
Folks following a raw vegan and vegan lifestyle find dating to be very difficult. One woman said, “finding a good, honest, mentally stable, no substance issues partner that’s also vegan (raw vegan) feels like needle in a haystack for real”.

11/28/2020 • 25 minutes, 7 seconds How Much Sanitizer Is Too Much? I have never been a fan of hand sanitizer, that’s until I started going hiking and I noticed Dr Bronner’s made some healthier versions using essential oils. I was always concerned about the chemicals in conventional sanitizers. Sanitizers are full of toxic chemicals, like phthalates, which mimics hormones and disrupts the endocrine glands. Endocrine disruptors have been linked to diabetes and obesity.
Using sanitizers also disrupts our hand microbiome, the “good” bacteria that keep our skin, and our bodies, healthy.
But once we hit COVID, all the news had folks in fear and people really went crazy with sanitizing solution. I took a plane from NYC a couple months ago and all the passengers on the plane, which was packed by the way, had out disinfectant sprays and sanitizer spraying everything and wiping down everything.
I love a clean environment but this was overboard. I started coughing from all the sprays.
The irony is that the sanitizers have triclosan which can damage the immune system.
Ultimately, soap and water is the best and only way to clean yourself in the least harmful and most effective way. When you are out hiking or in an environment where you need to disinfect your hands, opt for phthalate-free and triclosan-free sanitizers.

The best accountability buddy you could have is a produce delivery box because once your kitchen is full of produce, you will eat it all to make sure the food does not go bad.

You create the environment from within yourself to allow healing to take place. It starts with a decision. Decide you want to eat clean. I’ve always taught that you setup your kitchen for success but folks get really caught up in their heads before they can even take that step.
Don’t complain about your condition. Use it as an opportunity to do better. There is always room for improvement. Bob Marley said complaining is prayers to the devil. Here’s another way: Isaiah 33:10 says “But the LORD says: “Now I will stand up. Now I will show my power and might.” You have it within you to do a different thing, to show up more fully in your life. Type 2 diabetes is an opportunity to do that. It is a wake up call.

Many folks want to know how do we get through this and in my opinion, the answer is to have hard conversations with folks who do not look like you and may not think like you.
We are all in our silos and what that will do is breed more division. We only get to a place of having love and empathy for all when we can listen and sit in understanding on some level. You may not have understanding with lived experience but you can find points of commonality.
We also need to educate ourselves so we are having intelligent conversations. These are the weapons of change.

5/26/2020 • 25 minutes, 30 seconds If you’re using food for comfort, consider these self reflecting questions and journal on them, ponder them. Relax in a comfy space and mull over them.
Think about the thing that is exhausting you, let’s say it’s work for example.
Why do you do the work that you do?
What are you missing in your work and in life? If we are eating for comfort, there is something we probably feel we are lacking in that moment that the food fills for us even temporarily.
Can you find happiness and comfort beyond food?
Here are some ideas:
Read a novel or a good book
Write your thoughts and emotions in a journal.
Take a long walk outside.
Watch a favorite movie or television show.
Sing and dance.
These are all examples of self care practices that will help you overcome food addiction or using food not to nourish your body but to comfort or quell an emotion. They are also ways in which you can infuse play in your day.

A better and easier way is to focus on crowding out unhealthy foods and eating more healthy foods. Even healthy foods can work against you if they are not prepared in a healthy manner.
Take irish moss for example, which is a staple food of Jamaicans. It has so many health benefits yet Jamaicans and Jamaican Americans are not uplifted as the healthiest group. It’s because of how the food is prepared.

5/12/2020 • 16 minutes, 5 seconds The Book Black Mothers Need to Read The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that around 700 women die from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth every year. Black mothers are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than White women. Currently, we are seeing similar trends with the effects of COVID-19 on the Black community, with Black counties having infection rates nearly three times higher and death rates that are about six times higher than majority white counties.
Disparities around maternal mortality and COVID-19 death rates are impacted by pre-existing conditions that, per the reports, Black people are more likely to experience, like hypertension and cardiovascular issues, due to social and structural inequalities and food choices.
There is a food fix to these pre-existing conditions of which Dr Greger goes into detail in his book How Not to Die.

In 2017, the EPA determined that more food than any other single material was the largest contribution to landfills in the U.S.
While I think it’s better to have more than enough healthy food at home and waste than to not have enough and you end up eating trash because you’re hungry or you consistently run out to buy prepared food instead of saving and investing your money, there is a third and fourth option. Turn your food waste into ingredients for a new recipe or compost it.

Sometimes it feels hard to make that choice, especially if you are surrounded by unhappy people. I think that’s why I have always rejected negative people from my circle of friends. It sounds harsh but I knew I did not have the capacity to help them so I focused on making sure the bubble I lived in was a positive one. It helped me see possibilities and potential in life. It made (and continues to make) for a joyful life of promise and potential.
To be happy, you have to focus on self-care. This may mean getting a massage, practicing emotional freedom technique (EFT), practicing daily meditation, yoga, tai chi, etc. Pick something that resonates with you.
Research has shown that tai chi has tons of beneficial psychological impacts, ranging from increased self-esteem to reduced stress, anxiety, and mood disturbances (including depression).
Yoga, laughter, dance, gardening and even music can be fun and effective at lifting your mood. Research has also shown that gardening also decreases the severity of depression and disrupts negative rumination that can keep us in a dark place emotionally.
Finding personal peace is foundational. Then, to maintain that peace while in a union is the advanced level of spiritual growth. This episode we talk about how to maintain your personal happiness while in a marriage.

11/19/2019 • 45 minutes, 31 seconds Christine McDonald healed IBS, gout, arthritis, anxiety, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and got off all of her meds not fully raw. She eats alkaline vegan and 80% raw. Hi, I'm Christine McDonald. 4 years ago I was really sick and couldn't lose the 65 lbs I gained from my 3rd son. I was a half marathon runner with arthritis, gout, IBS-D, hereditary high blood pressure, high cholesterol, migraines, anxiety and more. One day, I was running and asked God for the truth about health. He told me to go back to the beginning. The beginning meant the Garden of Eden. That is where the healing is. God's first intentions for us.
So I began doing research and began to baby step at changing my diet. I started with 21 days of alkaline eating cutting out the acid foods. Then I reintroduced the acid foods one by one so I could see which ones triggered me. Sure enough meat, eggs and dairy brought back my pains from arthritis, gout and migraines and also brought back anxiety. The wheat products brought back IBS-D. Etc etc. As I continued to baby step, I finally got to doing raw challenges and juice fasts.
I have wanted to be fully raw, but I find it easier to sustain on raw till dinner. Then have an alkaline cooked dinner meal. I consider myself still baby stepping and hope to one day be fully raw. But I never beat myself up. I love myself to health.

Cooked food takes longer to digest so eating fruit after cooked food will create gas. If you are 100% raw throughout the day, you will not have this issue.

She is also a huge inspiration because she is so well-rounded. She is spiritually wise and well-versed on all the national and international issues of the POTUS position. Most of all, personally she inspires me how she is able to have conversations about highly charged topics and combat it with historical facts, patience, and peacefulness.
I’m constantly in political debates with my family, but I admit, I often end up yelling and being annoyed and frustrated that the other person is saying stuff that I beyond grossly disagree with. Being the passionate person that I am, part of my spiritual journey has been to get skillful with engaging in conversation of disagreement without being annoyed by it. Marianne seems to do this and still stay peaceful and calm.

Beyond B12 though, there are some critical things we do need to be mindful of for our health and well-being, which includes eating out at restaurants, even vegan restaurants.
Teflon is made up of fluorochemicals and is used to make non-stick, water resistant and oil repellent products and chemicals. Many restaurants could be using teflon coated pots and pans and this is an issue because this carcinogenic chemical leaches into food and the particles get released in the air. These fluorochemicals have been linked to many diseases such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon and rectal cancer, liver tumors, birth defects and infertility.

Parents are using IVF and preimplantation genetic testing and choosing to implant embryos less likely to have certain genetic diseases and chromosomal disorders. Others are using prenatal testing to detect genetic abnormalities and, in some cases, choosing to terminate pregnancies. Gene editing tools will allow for designer babies where parents can remove or add characteristics with sophisticated levels of detail. You can select a baby who is tall, has a high IQ, and is an extrovert.
The time is here where we need to think about our values and ethics around this. Where do we stand on this genetic manipulation? How much of taxpayer dollars should we allow for everyone to have access to this technology? What are the implications for implicit bias and it’s effect on the population with people having access to make these God-like decisions?

10/29/2018 • 44 minutes, 44 seconds How to Support Heavy Metal Detoxification Did you know using aluminum foil and consuming fish can lead to cognitive decline, or even worse, Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease? I’ve seen women in my family use the foil to bake fish a lot growing up.
Symptoms like low energy, mood imbalances and cognitive issues could be stemming from heavy metal poisoning from fish, silver dental fillings that slowly release mercury into the body, environmental pollutants (think cigarette smoke and air pollution), tattoos, vaccinations, and household products (like air condition filters, cosmetics, antiperspirants, aluminum foil, and fabric softeners).
This episode, we run through all the foods and spices that can support your body in removing heavy metals, like mercury, lead, arsenic, aluminum, etc.
Heavy metal toxicity can be deadly, but if you eat the foods we recommend on this episode on the regular and minimize exposure to the source of the toxins, you should be in good shape.

This is all fun and games until it’s not. I am not and have never been a fan of makeup. Primarily because I value and respect authenticity. I also feel like self-love comes from embracing yourself as you are instead of bending to other people’s perception of beauty. These days, I am anti-chemicals in and on the body and makeup is full of them. Now, this position on makeup is not really shared among all health coaches. I brought my colleague, Mishra, on the show to share her views, which is the polar opposite of mine.
