Emotional intelligence and maturity
The root of many marital problems is the lack of emotional intelligence in men. Some aren’t aware of their emotions, but usually it is men who shut out their emotions. This can cause an emotional separation in relationships that can at times be irrevocable. Rejection in marriage
One of the reasons I couldn’t wait to get married was because I didn’t want to have to deal with rejection from a love interest. Unfortunately, much to my disappointment I didn’t realize that rejection was still possible in my marriage. Abel and I have each had our cycles of rejection causing us to hurt each other. Join us on another candid episode as he and I discuss the pain of rejection and how we are working through it to find a solution.

Kids are like sponges
I love to eat a piece of cheese in the middle of the night while watching sports with the guys or sleeping past midnight every single night. These aren’t necessarily things I want to change about myself but I also wouldn’t want my kids to pick up these habits. Abel also has his own list of habits he doesn’t want the kids to inherit ,but kids are like sponges and they mimic what we do, even if we don’t want them to. Join us as we tackle another family dilemma, and discuss how we plan to address this situation and break this habit chain we are indirectly creating with our children. Hopefully it will allow us to keep the cheese but not pass it to the kids!

Guys and Girls: Debunking the stereotypes
We are living in the year 2020 and you would think stereotyping is a thing of the past. Worse yet, when it happens in your own home. Abel happens to think hanging frames is a “girl” thing. The new coin word, Entanglement
Three words that have become popular in 2020 in our everyday conversation are Pandemic, Quarantine and now thanks to Jada Pinkett, Entanglement. Life in the time of the Coronavirus

Don’t worry and stress be happy
Stress is a killer to our bodies, it will make you gain weight, loss hair and sleep to name a few. In our Latino culture we are taught that fear is a form of love. We are also surrounded by so much information that it makes us stress too because we fear of missing out while news media in it’s majority focuses on bad news. How are we supposed to survive and not get overstressed? Abel and I refuse to live in stress, because we discovered that it only causes us to argue. Join Abel and I in this episode of The Power of Us as we discuss how to tackle stress and avoid the chaos. It might just help your marriage.

Understanding the signs of emotions

The Best of Power of Us: Willing to fight for your Love
Today we decided to record this episode in Spanish for all our listeners that have requested it. This episode we delve into the fact that there has been a decline in couples getting married. Millennials are waiting longer to get married. Is it fear of commitment or is it simply that they want to be better prepared for the commitment? We have a guest that will talk to us about his personal experience and why he has decided to hold off on getting married. Join us to see if we were able to convince our guests opinion.

Passwords: The key to trust
Knowing your spouse’s password can be a double edged sword. It gives you a silent power and access to your significant others private information, but it can also divide and cause friction when this power is abused. In our marriage, Abel and I have each other’s passwords. We have nothing to hide from one another, however, at one point in our relationship I was obsessed with checking Abel’s accounts. The YouTube obsession
Abel loves YouTube! And he loves it even more because it’s helping him with our kids. I on the other hand am very leery about how much YouTube is too much YouTube. We as parents have to be honest with ourselves. YouTube has made it easier to entertain our kids but it might be getting to a point where it’s raising our kids. Abel and I have had heated discussions about the excessive use of YouTube and its influence on our children. When does a joke go too far and offend the one we love?
I married Abel for his heart and his amazing voice, NOT his jokes. Abel thinks he is a comedian and sometimes puts his foot in his mouth. I will admit my jokes sometimes get out of hand too. In an effort to try and make each other laugh we accidentally hurt each other which quickly escalates into a fight. Today we discuss healthy ways we have learned to joke with one another without offending.

What is a good Christian?
I often hear the words, “fake Christian” being thrown around. Unfortunately, many use the word of God to cut others rather than using it as a sword of faith. Who decided they can evaluate what a good or bad Christian is anyway? Those words aren’t even in the Bible and only our Lord can see the sincerity in our hearts. This week Abel discusses how my participation on the dance competition “Mira Quien Baila” helps me to glorify God. Join us on another thought provoking podcast.

Favorites
I think one of the worst things you can do to your children is show any favoritism between your kids. Abel and I delve into this topic and discuss the effects of having favorites, from the Bible our personal stories with our children, Sammy and Eli. Do you have a favorite child? Or are you an adult and still hurting from being the least favorite child? You won’t want to miss this candid episode of The Power of Us.

Getting your child to accept your new relationship
With the ever-increasing numbers in divorce there is also an increase in blended families. When Abel and I got married, my eldest daughter was 8 years old. She was upset with the marriage because she wanted her parents back together. How do you deal with your childs rejection of your new relationship? Abel fortunately understood my daughter. He himself had come from a single parent home and could relate with what she was going through. As the years have passed we have managed to develop a healthy family relationship, but through the process there was a lot of work, effort and tears. Join us as Abel as he describes what he did to win over my daughter in an effort that was truly a labor of love. If you are going through something similar, you won’t want to miss this episode.

Dealing with sexual abuse as a couple.
Sexual abuse has been the biggest challenge of my life but Abel was willing to still commit and marry me. He never could have imagined the challenges he’d face being married to a sexual assault survivor, however, he made the conscious decision to love me through it. In our journey we learned that he couldn’t fix me nor should he fix me. Without a doubt, Abel has been an essential part of my healing process. Age is more than a number
When I first told my sister that I liked Abel she said I was ridiculous, not because he was a bad guy but because he was 10 years younger than I. Everyone disagreed with our relationship yet we continued full force. Although I didn’t agree with my family and friends when I was dating Abel, I now have come to understand how such a major age difference can add complications to a relationship. In today’s episode Abel and I open up on how our age difference has affected our marriage and hope to enlighten our listeners who might be dealing with the same issue.

Family Matters
My father Don Pedro Rivera engraved in my heart that “family is the only thing you have at the end of the day”, and I agree with him. I firmly believe that I have nothing without my family. Once married to Abel, I couldn’t leave my strong family ties behind. Should I have to? Couldn’t Abel be an extension of my Rivera family? I couldn’t find the balance between extended family and my nuclear family because I didn’t automatically make the switch on my wedding day. In this episode, Abel and I open up about our family issues, and how we work every day on finding that happy balance and how we set priorities when it comes to our extended family.

A heart felt conversation with my mother
In honor of Mother’s Day, Abel and I sat down and had a candid conversation with my mother Rosa Amelia Rivera Saavedra. My mother spoke of her life with my father and her decision to divorce him after 42 years of marriage. Although this episode was one of the most emotional ones yet by far it has been one of my favorites because we got to sit and talk to a woman that I admire and respect tremendously. My mother opens her heart and explains how a woman knows when it’s time to ask for a divorce. When enough is enough.

Quitting on Marriage
Abel and I believe all relationships go through tough moments and that you can’t quit as soon as it gets hard. In this episode we speak to a very candid friend “Maria” who realized that in her third try at marriage her husband was not the issue. She came to the realization that she was the one that was quitting on the marriage in each attempt. She liked getting married but didn’t like dealing with the issues that came with it and quickly would give up on it and quit. Join us as we hear Maria’s story and how she decided to turn things around with her marriage, deciding to stay and deal with her personal issues by getting help.

Living in Purity
Is living in purity in today’s age possible? Most would think it’s not possible. Abel and I disagree. We believe in purity 100% before and during marriage. Today we debate with our guests, hosts of their own podcast “The BS Life”, Vic and Eddie, two men with opposing views regarding purity and virginity. Eddie is a proud virgin and Vic thinks he’s wasting his life away by saving himself for marriage.

It seems that the roles for men and women have flipped for many families since the MAN-cession of 2008. For Abel and Rosie the roles flipped when Rosie became the main bread winner when Abel was laid off and stayed home with their new born. Who should do what in the household? We discuss the roles of men and women in relationships with Mexican singer songwriter Karina Moreno who is open about her relationship experience after facing struggles in her marriage. She explains her thoughts on men being the leader and women being the multiplier.

S1E10 No me quiero casar
Today we decided to record this episode in Spanish for all our listeners that have requested it. This episode we delve into the fact that there has been a decline in couples getting married. Millennials are waiting longer to get married. Is it fear of commitment or is it simply that they want to be better prepared for the commitment? We have a guest that will talk to us about his personal experience and why he has decided to hold off on getting married. Join us to see if we were able to convince our guests opinion.

S1E7: Having strict standards in your relationship.
Before we get involved with someone we usually have already created our own standards of what we expect from our significant other. Are these standards realistic, are they too strict? Do they reflect our self-esteem? Abel and I have a friend who has been single for over 10 years. He has had one serious girlfriend but has never met a girl he thought he could marry despite dreaming of the big day. Is it that his standards are to strict? Join Abel and I as we discuss the importance of standards and how you should determine which ones are non-negotiable and which ones you need to be flexible with or you might end up alone and without a partner.

S1E3: Love Languages
On this Valentine’s Day we dedicate this episode to all those couples seeking to improve their expressions of love. After 6 years of marriage, Abel and I came to the conclusion that we weren't speaking the same love language. Despite our efforts, we didn’t feel loved. We discovered it wasn’t a lack of love it was just that we didn’t know how to express it. We hope you can join us as we discuss in this episode the 5 love languages and offer some useful tips that might help you express your love.

S1E1: We aren’t Perfect but we’re Real
Abel and I begin our first show talking about how we started our relationship. With a ten year age difference and a tumultuous first year of marriage the odds were against our survival. Today our marriage is not perfect, but its real and stronger than ever. We hope that hearing our story might help you understand what you might be going through or maybe help you avoid our mistakes. We want to hear your story as well, maybe we can learn from you too.
