We've got Jonny Evans! Part 1
It's happened, we've got him! Lady Evans is joined by Mr Evans MBE on the Manchester United podcast! This episode was recorded in two parts, the first at the Evans household, before we catch up at Carrington to discuss the fact that the defender is now back at the club, after re-signing in the summer. No ground is left uncovered with the Northern Irishman, from his early days as a supporter and memories of celebrating in the street when his heroes won the Treble. There is some chat around the computer game Football Manager, life in a body cast (!) and why he wouldn't kiss his mum in front of Roy Keane! Of course, the background of how he joined the Reds' fabled Academy is covered in depth, as well as his two stints in the senior team. Impressive stays at West Brom and Leicester City are also discussed but the main focus is this big Red's affection for his boyhood club. There is even a selection of listeners' questions for Jonny to answer as he lifts the lid on how much United means to him.The best place to catch up on the back-catalogue of our interviews is over on the Manchester United App, where you can listen to - and watch - all of our episodes in full, for free. Unheard: Memories of Munich
As we commemorate the 66th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster, we have delved into the archives to present a special episode of the Manchester United podcast. In 1998, 40 years after the tragedy, journalist and author Tom Tyrrell spent time with Jackie Blanchflower, Bill Foulkes and Albert Scanlon, Busby Babes and survivors from that fateful day. They spoke about the wonderful and ground-breaking team they played in, the events of February 6th, 1958, the aftermath and how it made them feel to watch the United team of 1998 - on the edge of glory themselves.Narrated by the legendary football writer Paddy Barclay, this is of course an incredibly emotional account of the darkest day in our club’s history, and the accounts of Jackie, Bill and Albert are presented as they were told in order to educate listeners. Pat McGibbon - Speaking out after 20 years
To kick off 2024 Sam, Helen & Maysie catch up with former Red and Northern Ireland international Pat McGibbon. Pat has an important story to tell, particularly at a time of year when a lot of people struggle with their mental health. Not long after joining United as a teenager, Pat learnt the tragic news of his brother Phillip taking his own life, which is something Pat hasn't spoken about until recently. He has begun to speak publicly about mental health issues, with the aim of increasing mental health awareness, reducing the stigma and promoting health and well-being through sport. Pat tells us about this heart-breaking time for his family and also how Manchester United offered him much needed structure in his life, helping him to focus on his football career again. It wasn't until after retirement when Pat started to really struggle with his own mental health. We're pleased to say that Pat has turned things around and is now a mental health and wellbeing coach/mentor. In Phillip's honour, Pat founded the charity TRAIN 2 B SMART (TTBS) Juniors, who aim to promote positive mental health and well-being through sport. TTBS have affiliated boys and girls teams at a range of age groups. The aim of the charity is to educate through seminars, workshops, play and to inspire the local/ wider community. For more information on Train 2B Smart you can watch this video or visit their website. You can donate to their Community Well-being Hub JustGiving page here. Diogo Dalot Part 2 - "I didn't give up"
Diogo is back on the United podcast! Sam, Helen & Maysie caught up with him at Carrington to talk about his impressive rise to the first team. Last time Diogo was on the podcast, it was early 2020 and he was breaking into the first team, now he's a regular! We had a lot to chat about. Diogo tells us how he never gave up on becoming a regular first team player and now wants to help other players coming through. The timing of this interview was perfect as it was just after his amazing match-winning goal at Sheffield United. Was this his favourite ever strike?Diogo takes us behind the scenes of the 22/23 Carabao Cup victory campaign and the subsequent celebrations at Wembley. He also talks about his loan spell at AC Milan being a game-changer in his career, as well as how he feels about becoming a father. If that's not enough, we also play a quiz (how well do you know your football player nicknames?), and Diogo answers your questions! The best place to catch up on the back-catalogue of our interviews is over on the Manchester United App, where you can listen to - and watch - all of our episodes in full, for free. Altay Bayindir - "Everyone wants to play for United"
This week on the Manchester United podcast, Sam Homewood and David May are at Carrington with GK Altay Bayindir. Yet to make an appearance for the first team, this is the perfect opportunity to get to know our new goalkeeper, and what a funny conversation it was!Altay arrived at Old Trafford with 166 career appearances and 53 clean sheets to his name, becoming Manchester United's first-ever Turkish player. He signed for United in the summer 2023 transfer window, completing his move from Fenerbahçe on deadline day.Over the previous two terms, Bayindir has added Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League experience to his CV with Fenerbahce and played his part in their run to lifting the Turkish Cup in 2022/23.Today on the podcast he talks about how he's adapting to life in Manchester, growing up in Bursa (close to Istanbul), plus Altay & Maysie swap stories about the most hostile games they've ever experienced in Turkey.Altay tells us about the chance conversation he had, which persuaded him to be a goalkeeper. He actually thinks that he could've been a decent striker or defender! We also find out which former United GK is Altay's hero as well as how he felt when he first knew that Manchester United were interested in him. Stories about Sir Bobby Charlton
Welcome to a special episode of the Manchester United podcast. Today we commemorate one of our most beloved sons, Sir Bobby Charlton, who passed away last weekend at the age of 86. There are no superlatives worthy of describing just how much Sir Bobby’s contribution to the club is valued and similarly, there are no words to articulate just how profound and sad this loss is to everyone associated with Manchester United. In this episode Sam, Helen & Maysie present a selection of their favourite Sir Bobby Charlton stories, told my previous guests of the United Podcast. One thing is obvious and shines through these stories… the respect, admiration and affection that everybody holds for Sir Bobby Charlton. The greatest. He will never be forgotten. Hosted on Acast. Jesper Olsen - "Something special"
Jesper Olsen, an exotic signing from Ajax in 1984 for the Reds, joins Helen Evans, Wes Brown and Lou Macari for a trip down Memory Lane on the UTD Podcast. The Dane was at Old Trafford with kids from his Future Football coaching school and, as he is based in Australia now, this was a rare opportunity to speak to the former winger at a ground he graced, parading his skills down the left flank.Jesper reveals how he always followed United’s results growing up in Denmark and worked in a bank before breaking through at Ajax. He feels there was a reason why Ron Atkinson decided to sign him and talks us through the move and adapting to life in English football. This included a lot of effort off the pitch, including lock-ins at Paddy Crerand’s pub (!) and needing to ask captain Bryan Robson about the ‘small bears’ that were appearing in his garden! It was not always plain sailing, as he lifts the lid on an infamous training-ground bust-up with midfield hard-man Remi Moses, one that was hard to hide as it left him with a black eye.The transition to training at The Cliff was an eye-opener and he got to see the start of Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign when the Scot came in. Jesper would go on to play with Eric Cantona at Bordeaux and talks about the best players he lined up with, including Johan Cruyff and that memorable penalty routine he performed with the Dutch master. Now living Down Under, Jesper retains the memories of United being “something special” and reminisces about the brilliant FA Cup in 1985 against Everton. At the end of the podcast, Jesper, Wes and Lou provide invaluable advice to the kids from the coaching school about how to make the grade in the game. This is a fabulous chat with one of our first overseas signings and the chance to catch up with a skilful player who will be remembered fondly by a lot of supporters. The best place to catch up on the back-catalogue of our interviews is over on the Manchester United App, where you can listen to - and watch - all of our episodes in full, for free. Kevin Moran - "I saw red!"
Kevin Moran, a famous figure from United’s past, joined Helen Evans and David May to discuss his career on our latest UTD Podcast. The Irish centre-back was with May at Blackburn Rovers late in his career but only after starting two FA Cup finals with United in the 1980s, as we lifted the cup by beating Brighton & Hove Albion and Everton. Unfortunately, Kevin was the first man ever to be sent off in the showpiece event, for a foul on Everton’s Peter Reid in 1985. Ron Atkinson’s 10 men still won, thanks to Norman Whiteside’s iconic goal, and, of course, Moran recalls that day and answers the question of whether he ever received his medal.Growing up, he played hurling and Gaelic football in his homeland, which could have derailed his United career before it had started, as he would secretly play in some high-profile games in the Republic of Ireland, without the club’s knowledge! He even reveals he turned the Reds down when they first came calling!A late starter, he only got into football at 14, his commitment and bravery would become legendary with United’s gamble on him paying off. Atkinson replacing Dave Sexton at the helm made a difference in terms of his fight for a first-team place, but his time at Old Trafford came to an end after Sir Alex Ferguson’s arrival, which he discusses in detail as the Scot tried to rid the club of its drinking culture.A move to Sporting Gijon in Spain showed his sense of adventure and he would remain a stalwart for Republic of Ireland, being part of Jack Charlton’s famous 1990 World Cup side and even making the squad four years later, as he ended up on 71 caps.Kevin tells us more about his interesting career path after retirement and is still a season ticket-holder at Old Trafford. Daley Blind - My message to United fans
Another unmissable UTD Podcast has been released as Sam Homewood, Helen Evans and David May travelled to Munich for a catch-up with former Red Daley Blind. The Dutchman was an open and honest guest, talking about a wide range of subjects, including his stint at Old Trafford, which included winning four trophies with the club. After growing up in football, with his father Danny an Ajax legend, he rose through the ranks at the Amsterdam giants and discusses how tough it was to make his own mark in the game, considering how famous his dad was. Shining at the 2014 World Cup under Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal would change his life and he talks about the decision to follow the experienced manager to United and adjusting to life in the Premier League. Despite some real high points, he details how difficult he found it when van Gaal left the club, on the back of winning the FA Cup. There was sadness when he also left the club, to return to Ajax, and he speaks very honestly about a tough time when he was diagnosed with heart muscle inflammation in 2019. Thankfully, he was able to return to action and joined Bayern earlier this year. Daley talks about the future, as he would like to go into coaching himself when he hangs up his boots, and has a special message for all United fans. It’s another cracking episode which all fans will enjoy. The best place to catch up on the back-catalogue of our interviews is over on the Manchester United App, where you can listen to - and watch - all of our episodes in full, for free. The trio were at Carrington to sit down with the Women's first-team manager Marc Skinner to reflect on a truly historic season. The team finished second in the WSL, narrowly missing out on the title, reached the FA Cup final and have a shot at Champions League football next season for the first time ever! Eric Steele - Being Sir Alex's GK Coach
A familiar face joins hosts Helen Evans, Sam Homewood and David May on the latest UTD Podcast as Eric Steele lifts the lid on his time at the club. The Reds’ former goalkeeping coach has some fascinating tales to tell about working under Sir Alex Ferguson and helping the team lift the Premier League title in 2012/13. After starting out at the Wallsend Boys’ Club, like our previous guest Steve Bruce, the Geordie retired from his playing career in 1988 but was determined to start a new chapter in coaching. There was a back-up option, buying a pub, but he ended up working with some of the best in the game, including Peter Schmeichel, Edwin van der Sar and, of course, David De Gea. Piecing together his journey in the game, Eric reveals how he felt compelled to re-enact one of the most famous saves of all time, Gordon Banks’s jaw-dropping dive to keep out Pele’s header, at the same stadium in Guadalajara, while on tour. There is great insight into what his job entails on a day-to-day basis, his working relationship with Sir Alex and the Reds he felt were the best and worst trainers. In addition to his thoughts on van der Sar and De Gea, Eric recalls how Ben Foster became the penalty shootout hero in the 2009 League Cup final win over Tottenham, with the help of an iPad. Steele reveals the fall-out from Ferguson’s retirement and how much a new project means to him, as he continues to appreciate how lucky he is to work in the sport. The best place to catch up on the back-catalogue of our interviews is over on the Manchester United App, where you can listen to - and watch - all of our episodes in full, for free. Steve Bruce - United captain, United legend
Sam Homewood, Helen Evans and David May visit a golf club this week for a chat with United legend Steve Bruce. Steve has had a wonderful career in football, as a player and manager, and offers a fascinating reflection on it all during the latest UTD Podcast. The former Manchester United captain begins with his upbringing in the north-east and his early days at the famed Wallsend Boys Club. Starting his professional career with Gillingham, the defender reveals a funny story about reversing the charges to call his future wife, while down in Kent, and how the police turned up at the phone-box, prompting fears his time in the game could come to an end before it had really got going. Thankfully, it was soon smoothed over and he impressed sufficiently with the Gills to earn a move to Norwich City, even if he recalls a horror debut against Liverpool. Once United registered an interest in his services, there was only going to be one place for him to continue his progress. Not only did he star for the Reds as the team won our first title for 26 years but he became club captain, all on the back of an impromptu house visit by Sir Alex Ferguson! Brucey offers insight into his incredible partnership with Gary Pallister, and scolds his fellow centre-back for leaking a secret about him from their time rooming together. He also explains why Eric Cantona was a “bit bonkers” and details the Frenchman’s favourite tipple at the pub.Of course, younger fans will view Steve as a manager, first and foremost, as he has a wealth of experience in this field, taking charge of 12 different clubs. He answers a question about how he chose the jobs, as he has bossed some big city rivals, and opens up about the difficulties and pressures faced in the hot seat.A man with many great stories to tell, Steve Bruce is certain to keep you entertained throughout the episode. The best place to catch up on the back-catalogue of our interviews is over on the Manchester United App, where you can listen to - and watch - all of our episodes in full, for free. Fred - "I am blessed"
Joining Helen Evans and Sam Homewood today for the latest episode of the UTD Podcast is midfield dynamo Fred, fresh from recently passing the landmark of 200 appearances at the heart of the Manchester United engine room. This is the most appearances from a Brazilian for the Reds and the second most from a South American, behind Antonio Valencia. Football is a high-pressure business, but the effervescent Brazilian tells us how he maintains such a positive outlook on life, always aiming to play the game with a smile on his face. Fred talks about growing up in Belo Horizonte and how blessed he feels to be playing for Manchester United, a team that he used to watch on TV as a child. He also shares with us his fascinating experience in Ukraine, playing on the road for Shakhtar Donetsk after the abandonment of their home stadium due to the conflict in the Donbass region of Ukraine. The midfielder tells us how his move to United happened, and which game is his favourite in the famous red shirt. The conversation also takes an unexpected turn when Fred expresses his love for superhero movies and UK tourism! Christian Eriksen - "United, it was meant to be"
Christian Eriksen has been missed in the Manchester United midfield but the Dane is on his way back and joined us for the latest episode of the UTD Podcast. The classy playmaker discusses his career to date and the rumours of a move to Old Trafford, which long circulated before he did end up joining the Reds last summer. He recalls playing in Denmark, the Netherlands and Italy, plus adjusting to the style and pace of the Premier League. He addresses the obstacles he has overcome and explains why he left Italy, swapping Inter Milan for Brentford. He admits he was bowled over by the response from football fans, in general, to his return to action and his time with the Bees helped lead to finally pulling on the United shirt, to join Erik ten Hag’s new project here. Hosts Helen Evans, Sam Homewood and David May ask about his relationship with the manager, what the future has in store for the side, his partnership with Casemiro in the midfield and, of course, when we can expect to see him back on the pitch. This is another outstanding podcast which allows you to know more about Christian – make sure you give it a listen! The best place to catch up on the back-catalogue of our interviews is over on the Manchester United App, where you can listen to - and watch - all of our episodes in full, for free. Ella Toone - "We're making history"
A superstar and huge role model joins us in this latest UTD Podcast episode, as Ella Toone talks us through her meteoric rise, in tandem with that of the women’s game in general. As a devoted fan growing up, her dream of playing for the Reds appeared impossible but the inception of the women’s side in 2018 changed all that. Idolising Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, she was only going to join one club, despite rival interest from elsewhere, as she “came home” to United. Marc Skinner’s team have gone from strength to strength and are making history and inspiring future generations with their progress, something the forward is obviously very proud of. And, of course, Ella also speaks extensively about winning the Euros with England, the wild celebrations that followed and why her local pub are doing a roaring trade in bucket hats in her honour! Dion also opened up on his struggles with injuries - particularly his untimely leg break early on in his United career, and the horror injury to his neck while playing for Aston Villa.
