217. Universalism: Ancient Heresy or Biblical Teaching? // Keith Giles

Summary In this conversation, Tim and Keith discuss the topic of universal reconciliation and respond to the claim that it is not a biblical or Christian perspective. They explore various themes, including the historical context of universalism, the views of early church fathers, and the nature of God. They also address the theological critiques of universalism, such as the connection between conditionalism and universalism. In this conversation, Tim and Keith discuss the concept of universal reconciliation and respond to critiques of the belief. They explore the idea of having the mind of Christ and the importance of humility. They address theological and philosophical critiques of universalism, including the claim that it originated from Gnosticism and Kabbalah. They also discuss the problem of grace and how universalists interpret biblical passages differently. The conversation highlights the different hermeneutic approaches used by universalists and the challenges of interpreting Paul's writings. They conclude by addressing verses that seem to support eternal punishment. Takeaways Universalism is not a radical or heretical view, but rather a valid and biblical perspective within the Christian tradition. The early church fathers, including Origen, held views of universal reconciliation, and the label of heresy was not applied until much later. The connection between conditionalism and universalism is not a slippery slope, and each view has its own distinct theological arguments. The theological critiques of universalism can be addressed through a deeper understanding of the nature and character of God. Having the mind of Christ involves humility and the willingness to lower oneself for the sake of others. The claim that universalism originated from Gnosticism and Kabbalah is unfounded and lacks evidence. The problem of grace in universalism is a misunderstanding; extending grace to everyone does not diminish its value. Universalists interpret biblical passages differently, often using apocalyptic hyperbole and spiritual readings. Paul's writings can be interpreted in different ways, but the concept of universal reconciliation is supported by various passages. They discuss the role of doubt in faith, the limitations of historical claims in the Bible, and the need for a nuanced understanding of biblical authority. The conversation delves into the rhetoric of war and the labeling of deconstruction as the doctrine of demons.TakeawaysThe concept of a biblical worldview can be limiting and oversimplifies the complexity of faith and theology.Biblical authority is a topic of theological discussion and interpretation, and it is important to recognize the diverse and historical context of the Bible. The role of personal experience and subjectivity should be acknowledged and respected in discussions of faith and theology. Doubt can play a positive role in the development of faith, and it should be embraced and explored rather than suppressed. The interpretation of the Bible should consider the historical context and the complexities of biblical texts, rather than relying on a simplistic view of biblical inerrancy. The church needs to address and confront issues of spiritual abuse and hold leaders accountable for their actions.Orthopraxy, the practice of faith, is often overlooked in favor of orthodoxy, the right beliefs.Deconstruction is a personal and often painful process that should be met with empathy and support. The rhetoric of war and labeling deconstruction as the doctrine of demons can be harmful and divisive. There is a need for further discussion and exploration of these topics to foster understanding and growth.Chapters00:00 Introduction and Background06:48 The Concept of a Biblical Worldview10:57 Defining Deconstruction14:07 Deconstruction as a Threat to Christianity22:25 Deconstruction vs. Being Biblical28:00 The Modernist Mindset and Biblical Authority36:23 Objective Truth Claims and Biblical Authority43:41 The Claim of Jesus as the Only Way48:24 The Role of Experience and Subjectivity49:15 The Nuance of Doubt and Apologetics51:49 The Clash Between Modernism and Postmodernism53:43 Navigating the Historical Context of Christianity54:38 The Relationship Between Deconstruction and Subjectivity55:08 The Complexity of Biblical Inerrancy56:27 The Role of Doubt in Faith57:23 Interpreting the Bible and Understanding Biblical Authority58:49 The Limitations of Historical Claims in the Bible59:42 The Challenge of Biblical Inerrancy01:01:30 The Development of Theological Thought01:02:48 Understanding History in the Bible01:04:10 The Purpose of History in Biblical Texts01:06:03 The Complexity of Biblical Interpretation01:08:49 Taking the Bible Seriously01:14:12 Questioning the Authenticity of Faith01:18:47 Recognizing Spiritual Abuse01:20:39 Misunderstanding the Concept of Child Sacrifice01:32:01 Addressing Abuse within the Church01:36:06 The Need for Biblical Literacy and Theology01:37:55 The Importance of Orthopraxy01:41:39 Empathy and Support for Deconstruction01:44:10 The Rhetoric of War and "The Doctrine of Demons" Learn more about The Summit For Religious FreedomFollow Us On Instagram @thenewevangelicals  Subscribe On YouTubeSupport Our Work

206. Trump off the Ballot EXPLAINED // Andrew L. Seidel

SummaryIn this conversation, Tim Whitaker interviews Andrew Seidel about the disqualification of Donald Trump from the Colorado ballot and the definition of insurrection. They discuss the legal basis for disqualification under the 14th Amendment and the role of the courts in determining eligibility for office. They also address the argument of tyranny and the potential for violence in the upcoming 2024 election.TakeawaysThe Colorado Supreme Court disqualified Donald Trump from the state's ballot under the 14th Amendment, which prohibits insurrectionists from holding public office.Insurrection is defined as an organized and armed uprising against authority or the operations of government, with the intent to prevent the peaceful transfer of power. The chances of Trump being off the ballot in other states depend on the decisions of the courts and the interpretation of the 14th Amendment.Disqualification based on insurrection is not a violation of democratic principles, but rather a safeguard against those who have violated their oath to uphold the Constitution. The 2024 election may see increased volatility and potential acts of violence, but upholding the rule of law and defeating Trump in a landslide can help mitigate these risks.Chapters00:00 Introduction and Background03:10 Disqualification from the Colorado Ballot09:23 Definition of Insurrection19:23 Chances of Trump Being Off the Ballot24:20 Addressing the Tyranny Question31:28 What to Expect in 2024Learn more about The Summit For Religious FreedomFollow Us On Instagram @thenewevangelicals  Support Our Work

Jemar, explains how historical context is important to understand the current minimization of racism and its implications on society as a whole. 25. Centering the Gospel of Jesus on the Oppressed with Rev. Megan Madsen

Megan Madsen, a Wesleyan theologian, discusses with Tim whether or not social justice is Biblical justice.  From the Hebrew Bible to the Gospels, Megan breaks down how Judaism viewed injustice and how God expected Israel to respond to oppression of any kind. Megan, also reorients believers to an oppressed centered gospel in which the Spirit of God moves through a believer and accomplishes good deeds through them. She points out that modern Evangelicalism is centered on the white, male, heteronormative, Christian, captialist model and the gospel must benefit that believer. This is in contrast to the believer being beneficial to those around them, especially the most vulnerable in society.Follow Tim on Instagram // @thenewevangelicals Support Our Work Check out the new merchJoin Our Facebook Community Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

21. Rescuing Women from Bad Sex with Sheila Gregoire

Sheila Gregoire, author of The Great Sex Rescue and the Facebook page To Love, Honor and Vacuum, is back to break down the misleading issues in Evangelical literature about marriage and sex. Beginning with her background, Sheila explains how the book The Great Sex Rescue became one of the first comprehensive scientific surveys on Evangelical Christian women’s sexual mental well-being and pleasure. Sheila and Tim explore the myths and harmful influences of these well known marriage books by Evangelical Christian authors. Show NotesSheila, begins by giving background on how her venture into the world of Christian women’s sexuality began. She explains how the book The Great Sex Rescue came about. Her research for the book used the first of its kind scientific survey to gauge women’s sexual satisfaction, women’s marriage health and women’s overall view of sex. Sheila, identifies four problems within the literature of well known Christian authors: The most damaging being sex is primarily for men, women were experiencing pleasure 47% less than the rate of their husbands, physical explanations for lack of pleasure not addressed, and myths about women’s sexuality. Sheila, goes on to explain how those books were not scientifically analyzed but used faulty interpretation of the data of peer reviewed material. Tim and Sheila look at the myths promoted in these well known books such as: Men have no self-control and therefore their wives must satisfy their sexual needs without a consideration of their own, issues of consent in marriage exploited by these authors, the dehumanization of men by portraying them as sex crazed maniacs, and how a woman’s painful intercourse isn’t tied to her need for non-intercourse stimulation.ResourcesCheck out Sheila's WebsiteFollow Tim on Instagram // @thenewevangelicals The New Evangelicals is completely crowd funded.
