struggling to make genuine connections & how to be a good friend
In this episode, cara dives into the topic of struggling to make genuine connections:
self-discovery: she unpacks the challenges faced when leaving familiar surroundings and entering new social circles. the importance of staying true to oneself, even in the face of cultural differences and societal expectations.
instant connections vs. effortful relationships: the gut feeling of instant connections and the pondering of why some relationships require more effort. cara emphasises the value of getting to know people beyond first impressions.
quality over quantity: cara discusses the misconception of needing to connect with everyone and the significance of cherishing authentic connections. exploring the idea that different friendships serve different purposes.
friendship realities vs. social media fantasies: she addresses the influence of social media in shaping unrealistic expectations of friendships. recognising that true connections involve effort (highs&lows).

2024 Is going to be iconic
EEPPP how is it already time for our first episode of 2024 and in our opinion its ICONIC.
2024… we feel excited, nervous, scared, and grateful for everything that is to come. join us as we continue with our tradition and take this time to set our intentions for the upcoming year…new habits we want to introduce, patterns we want to break and goals we want to achieve. We also discuss the ways in which we want to push ourselves out of our comfort zone this year!
If you would like to join us in this tradition here are the questions that we answer (it honestly is such a fun journaling exercise to do and one to look back on at the end of the year)
What is one overarching intention you would like to set for this coming year? (Potentially choose one word that reflects this - our ‘word of the year’)
What are three ways you will push yourself out of your comfort zone in 2024?
What do you want to do more of in 2024?
What do you want to do less of in 2024?
What are three things you want to accomplish in 2024 (can be small/big)
Thanks again for all of you that have listened to us in 2023 and we are truly excited to continue to make content (that is hopefully better for all of you)

what we've (all) learnt in 2023 🌟
✨ skip to 01:08 to listen to all of your voice notes! ✨
if you've been following our podcast for a while (aka for more than a year), you already know the drill with our end of year episodes!!! every year (this is our third year doing this now ... wth!!), we answer the same journal prompts and, most importantly, ask YOU GUYS what's one thing you've learnt this year. listen out for some familiar voices & even a musical reflection on the year from one of you. thank you from the bottom of our hearts to each of you who have listened along to us this year, and especially to those of you who've submitted your own voice notes!
see below the journal prompts we answer:
If the energy of your past year could be encapsulated by one word, what would that word be?
What were your big wins this year?
What were your small wins this year?
What were your challenges this year? (and what did you learn from them?)
What are 3 things you learnt?
What do you want to leave behind from this past year?
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE ! <3

how to know if you are on the right path
in this very thought provoking episode (at least we thought so!) we discuss the notion of 'the right path' and discuss the following...
-is there such thing as a right path?
-what are the things to look out for when questioning this? (values, morals, happiness)
-being complacent/comfortable even if things don't feel 'right'
-the instability of life means that 'paths' are always changing
we discuss the privilege of being able to make changes in your life to better yourself and those around you.. and why its important to be grateful for that <3
we end on a personal note and ask ourselves if we feel like we are where we should/want to be..

why our inner critics can go f*** themselves
we think its time to tell our inner critics that they can go f*** themselves!!
In this longer episode (our way of saying a quick sorry for not uploading last week 🥺) we're taking some time to reflect on our experiences with our inner critic.
But first we want to understand all about what actually is the ‘inner critic’. We'll be exploring the philosophy and history behind this phenomenon, as well as the neurophysiology that underpins our self-critical nature 🧠. We share examples of inner critic voices, how it affects us, and its links to various difficulties such as depression and anxiety. We also touch on the reasons why our inner critic should not be trusted ( it is not a true moral guide) and how it is usually formed as a response to environmental conditioning…
In next week’s episode we’ll be sharing tips and strategies for managing the inner critic, so that we can all practice more self compassion and self love 💞 and, as always, we want to hear from you! Let us know in the question below.. How do you manage your Inner critic? We’re so excited to share these and react to them in part 2 ✨

for people pleasers only...
do you notice yourself agreeing with others for the sake of agreeing? struggle to say no to others? constantly apologise for things? ... if you're saying yes then this episode is for you!!
in this solo episode, i (cara) sit down and share some of my personal experiences with 'people pleasing' and discuss the following topics and questions:
what people pleasing actually is and what does it look like?
how people pleasing and seeking external validation are interconnected
is seeking external validation always a bad thing?
what are the reasons why some of us people please?
how people pleasing can actually hinder relationships + foster a loss of authentic self
how to break this pattern of thinking and learn to take up space
just a reminder that your voice matters, you are worthy, and you deserve to take space <3

we had a rough week… tips on managing stress and work/life balance
Its just one of these weeks.. maybe something was in the air?? In this episode we discuss how we’ve been feeling recently and share our recent struggles with switching off from work when things are stressful, finding a better work life balance, and detaching our work from our identity. we talk about:
the importance of setting boundaries whilst knowing yourself worth
Detoxing from all technology after work Prioritising time for hobbies/body movements /outdoors
Detaching work from being a reflection on yourself (especially if you have people pleasing tendancies)
I (Cara) personally found this episode really helpful to talk through especially as I had quite a self-inflicted unhealthy week. I want this to be a reminder that its okay to have off weeks and to let yourself go.
Let’s recognise that we should be proud of ourselves and how we handle stressful situations, even when also highlighting and recognising that we could be kinder and have a healthier work balance in the future. If you're a student this episode can still apply to you as we recognise a lot of similar feelings that we had at uni/school!

the power of accepting the duality of life
"Under heaven all can see beauty as beauty, only because there is ugliness. All can know good as good only because there is evil. Being and nonbeing produce each other. The difficult is born in the easy. Long is defined by short, the high by the low. Before and after go along with each other. So the sage lives openly with apparent duality and paradoxical unity. - 2nd Verse of the Tao Te Ching
In this weeks episode, we have a lot of questions and thoughts hehe.. we discuss the concept of the duality of life and how understanding it and most importantly accepting it.. can change the way we perceive our life!! Some specific topics we question are:
- can two things both be true at the same time ?
- the conflict and struggle of wanting and striving for self improvement and how that contradicts with self acceptance and self love
- how we're allowed to feel all the emotions present in the human experience at the same time
- how duality is present in both the human experience and in nature
- Is it true that you can only fully know one thing by understanding its opposite ? (love + loss, success + failure, dark + light, the good + the bad) ?
song reference: Happy & Sad by Kacey Musgraves
join us for the journalling challenge this week as we keep track of all of the supposedly contradicting moments of extreme emotion that we feel throughout each day!
so... please pour yourself a matcha and enjoy listening! 🍵 Follow us on instagram (@the.matcha.diaries) or subscribe to us on youtube here.. to stay up to date on our lives, contribute to future episodes, and share any of your thoughts! I’m remembering
I can be beautiful in private too

breaking up with our past selves
being self aware and having a good understanding of yourself (i.e why you think things, why you feel things) has its perks, but is there such thing as being too self aware? are we spending too much time overthinking every emotion we feel? is our focus on self development hindering our ability to live in the moment?
join us in this early morning coffee chat, as we try to figure out how to break the cycle of overthinking and negative self talk….and instead live life in the moment, taking each day as it comes ♥️

how to appreciate the lows in life
"i’ve been seeing my loneliness as an entity i live with, like a roommate. i take my loneliness on dates. we listen to sad music together. we sit together at dinner. i look it in the eyes. we don’t fight." - zoe berger
this truly is a very special conversation and might be one of my favourite guest episodes yet! cara & I were joined by the wonderful zoe who is a writer/graphic designer living in nyc to talk about loneliness, love, mental illness and everything in between. some specific q's we answer are:
how to find the beauty in loneliness and stop feeling ashamed?
how to deal with heartbreak or breakups?
what is it really like to live with BPD and depression?
how to know what medication or treatment is right for your mental illness?
recording this episode was so insightful to us because zoe has the most beautiful way of looking at life and the human emotional spectrum! i took sooo much away from this conversation and i'm sure you will too. <3

clubbing: are we really having fun?
when we sat down to record this episode... I (cara) had no idea what we were going to talk about....Leo had a few things on her mind that she really wanted to unload and so....
join us for a truly authentic chit chatty style episode, where leo shares a recent 'going out' experience. leo discusses how the experience made her feel, and the questions that arose regarding clubbing, going out culture, fomo & the pressure to say yes even when you don't want to! We discuss why we think the enjoyment behind clubbing can change as you get older, how sometimes we only go clubbing because of the fear of missing out on the memorable experiences with friends, how sometimes we may not feel 'extroverted' enough to be comfortable in those situations, and most importantly why saying no to going out can feel so difficult.

how i've failed myself
this was a difficult one … inspired by Elizabeth Day’s podcast “how to fail”, this is part 2 (part1: leo, part 2: cara) of our episode series were we asked ourselves the tough question “what are your biggest failures” ? A question that might seem simple to the eye… but it pushes someone to think about their past, their experiences, things they regret.. but most importantly the lessons that they have learnt, and how those failures are vital to their current successes.
the two failures we discuss in part 2 are:
saying no to a lot of things growing up (because I cared a lot of what people thought of me) + ultimately missing out on a lot of experiences
closing my self off in relationships + friendships
a note from cara: recording this episode in itself taught me that it is okay to take space, and made me realise the importance of believing in your worth and the value you bring to those around you. If you ever don't feel like you're good enough, that your voice and story isn't worth sharing, then I want you to know that you're not alone BUT we have to start believing in the reasons we are put on this earth and all the greatness that comes with our presence.

what comes after the honeymoon phase?
the honeymoon phase is over... now what?
In this weeks episode, Ed (AKA Cara's boyfriend) and I sit down with each other and answer your questions on surviving a long term relationship in your twenties. We share the story of how we met, how we support each other as a couple, our love languages, our greatest struggles and most importantly we dive into what intimacy & maintaining a spark in your relationship actually looks post the honeymoon phase.
Here's a sneak peek into the questions we answered:
- Is it difficult learning to love a new version of them again after they change with time?
- What to do about that feeling that you didn't get to try everything but you've found 'the one' now?
- Is it normal to have periods of doubts / not know if this is the person you want to spend your life with?
- Have you ever asked yourself if there is maybe somebody better for you?
- How to maintain the magic and spark?

do our failures define us?
we dug DEEP in this episode … inspired by Elizabeth Day’s podcast “how to fail”, this is part 1 (part1: leo, part 2: cara) of our episode series were we asked ourselves the tough question “what are your biggest failures” ?
A question that might seem simple to the eye… but it pushes someone to think about their past, their experiences, things they regret.. but most importantly the lessons that they have learnt, and how those failures are vital to their current successes.
the two failures we discuss in part 1 are:
1. seeking validation to the expense of other people
2. not treating my body and mind as they deserve
a note from leo: this was by far the most difficult episode to record and upload, but i’m also proud of our community that i feel safe enough to be this vulnerable on here. my hope is that even one of you listening will be able to relate and feel slightly less alone, because i know that would have helped me a lot when i was going through these. sending lots of love.

the importance of finding beauty in the little moments
How are you... really?
A week ago we did a little check in and asked how you are all feeling. Unfortunately a big chunk of the responses we got back had to do with not feeling too well, lacking motivation, being exhausted, overwhelmed, drained, and feeling sad.
In this episode we wanted to sit down and respond to you guys. We discuss the importance of finding beauty and happiness in the little things, and share the things we actively do to make our days better. Leo discusses how the practice of 'romanticising your life' has always been a big part of how she lives and through doing so, I ( Cara ) learnt a lot from this episode.. especially when it comes to the power of the mind and our perspective on our day to day lives. We share simple ways to make the typical 'mundane' day.. a lot more beautiful.

is your subconscious lying to you?
Have you ever had a dream that left you feeling weird the next day but you couldn't quite put your finger on the reason why? Well, I (leo here) had one of those recently - which got us talking & thinking about the meaning behind our dreams and how the subconscious can sometimes harbour long forgotten or deeply buried feelings... So we decided to do some research into the topic... and boy are we glad we did!
In this episode we share our findings about the subconscious (obviously with the caveat that we're no scientists, we're merely curious matcha girlies wanting to share our newly acquired wisdom with all of you!), and cover the following:
What is the difference between our conscious and subconscious mind?
Which areas of our life does the subconscious impact?
How does the subconscious communicate with us?
How does trauma or negative past experiences impact our subconscious?
How can we tap into our subconscious to create the life we want?

Who REALLY is benefiting from Gen z continuously striving towards bettering themselves?
Does one have to drink alcohol to live your twenties well?
What is better - blissful ignorance or being being all too conscious of all the bad in the world?

catch up with us: friendship breakups, pop culture controversies & food freedom
... and we're back with another catch up!
In this episode we were originally meant to be only reacting to your friendship breakups (pt 2 of our episode two weeks ago) but ended up talking about so much more - our controversial celeb opinions, finding food freedom/old disordered eating patterns, how to react to family members commenting on your appearance & lots more!
After we finished recording this one, we both said that this felt like an OG matcha diaries episode - just us two chatting, covering pretty much every topic under the sun apart from the one we were originally meant to discuss (lol) .. but LOVING it! So we hope you enjoy it too & feel like you’re catching up with us at your local coffee shop. <3

matcha chat #3: the real reason summer romances are scary
Whilst Cara is enjoying the sunshine & family time in beautiful Jordan, I (Leo) take the mic and get REAL about my current relationship status and emotions.
This episode is part life catch up, part listener Q&A - with questions discussed including:
how did i meet my boyfriend? (full story time included 🤪)
how to maintain long distance communication successfully?
is it natural for number of friends to decrease in adulthood?
how to be satisfied with yourself in times of transition (e.g. school to uni, uni to job)?
So... please pour yourself a matcha and enjoy listening (and don't worry Cara will be back next week!!) 🍵 Follow us on instagram (@the.matcha.diaries) to stay up to date on our lives and contribute to future episodes.

reacting to your friendship breakups
This episode is a juicy/sad/pensive/chaotic one!
If there's one thing that hurts even more than romantic breakups, its friendship ones. Those are so often the ones we can't stop wondering and thinking about ... even years later! So we asked our listeners to submit their friendship breakups on our instagram and reacted to them on the podcast (obviously whilst also giving our unsolicited advice and sharing our own experiences).
So... please pour yourself a matcha and enjoy listening! 🍵 Follow us on instagram (@the.matcha.diaries) to stay up to date on our lives and contribute to future episodes.
P.s. - could the lovely listener who submitted the story about her (clearly fake) friend making an INSTA POST about how she thought the listener's long distance relationship wouldn't last (wtf, we repeat wtf??) pretty please send us a photo of the post because we're dying to see it!

dealing with change in your 20's
When we asked on our instagram for episode topics you'd be interested to hear, a lot of them were about some type of change - in jobs, in location, in relationships, in bodies etc. So we thought we'd combine them all into one big ol' episode all about CHANGE.
Especially in our twenties, we are having to confront different types of changes - moving away from home, going from being a student to a young professional, growing apart from certain friendships or watching our bodies age for the first time (to just name a few examples). In this episode, we touch on our personal experiences and how we've coped/are currently coping with these changes.

matcha chat #2: letting go of negative self-talk
Welcome back to episode 2 of our “matcha chats” series - episodes that are filled with heart-spilling topics we care about and want to get off our chests! This week is a little different to our usual episodes, as it will just be me, Cara <3
I thought I would sit down and do a chatty episode on a topic that i know is super relatable, and essentially something that in the past year or so I’ve noticed is taking over me in ways that i don’t want it to. This episode is all about negative self talk and our inner critic.
I dive into what negative self talk and our inner critic truly is, I share the common forms that it shows itself, and go into some of my personal experiences (how it affects my self image, relationships and work). I also did a little bit of research so that we could work together to stop this negative voice and ultimately... be our own best friend!
So... please do pour yourself a matcha and enjoy listening! 🍵 Follow us on instagram (@the.matcha.diaries) to stay up to date on our lives, contribute to future episodes & tell us your thoughts on what we spoke about!

Why do we self sabotage?
Do you experience a lot of negative self talk? Do you avoid things a lot? Procrastinate through mindless scrolling? and chronically worry? Then you might be self sabotaging and you don't even know it!
Self sabotage occurs when we destroy ourselves physically, mentally, or emotionally to hinder our own success and wellbeing by undermining personal goals and values.. it can be conscious behaviour or unconscious, and presents itself in many different facets of a persons everyday life ( I.e romantic relationships, career, education, family relationships) (Brenner, 2019).
In part 1, we understand what it really means to be self sabotaging, we uncover what these behaviours and patterns may look like and share our own personal experiences.. we also encourage you to sit down and journal / list some of the behaviours.
In part 2 coming next week, we will dive into the science behind it and understand why our brains are wired this way. We also uncover how can we get better at identifying when we are self sabotaging and break the pattern?
So pour yourself a matcha and join us! 💚 If you want to reach out to us or see any recent updates you can follow us on @the.matcha.diaries!

Spring clean with us - mentally & physically
As the days are getting longer and we're past the worst of the cold winter months.. more than ever we want to consciously make the most of the coming spring.
That’s what this episode is all about - going into these (hopefully) warmer months with better habits, mindsets and in general a brighter attitude. Join us as we share some positive habits we want to implement but also share our thoughts on the darker side of spring. We talk about dealing with burnout whilst wanting to make the most of the good weather or keep up with friends. And lastly, a struggle we wish nobody had to deal with … learning to accept (and appreciate) our bodies as we move away from the oversized layers and show more of our bodies!

"ask cara & leo" pt 2 - mental health advice
Welcome to the second instalment of “Ask Cara & Leo” - our bestie style advice series. This episode is about a topic we feel very passionate about ... our mental health.
A few of our listener questions we answer are:
- “what advice would you give someone who doesn’t feel like their good enough?”
- “how to react to people making comments about your body?”
- “when to know you need to start therapy?”
- “how to rest without feeling guilty?”
As always, we want to caveat that we are in no way professionals. All advice we share is from our own personal experiences, and if you are struggling with your mental health, we do advise that you speak to a professional, or even your close family/friends who can guide you on the best help that you can get. 🤍
If you’d like to submit advice questions for a future episode or generally chat to us, then follow us on @the.matcha.diaries.

Developing self love & seeing the higher purpose w/ @Its_nicolettemarie
“Self hate and self love exist on a powerful scale and each choice has an extremely different outcome. And I think it’s really easy to think you’re acting from one, when really it’s coming from the other.” - @its_nicolettemarie
In this episode we are joined by Nikki Jahnke, a lovely registered nurse and health coach. Saying that Nikki has a way with her words is an understatement. Her words are thought provoking, inspirational, and allow you to look deep inside yourself!
We cover it all in this episode - from self growth, spirituality, living life with a higher purpose, the importance of human connection, connecting with your energy, showing up as your authentic self online, truly practicing self love, the power of your mind against your ‘ego’, and so much more!
We just want to give a disclaimer, there is a bit of background noise in this episode and we truly do apologise for it x We want to give a trigger warning for this episode because we talk about eating disorders, so if you think this could negatively impact you in any way, then please don’t listen to this specific episode - but we’ll be excited to have you back next week. Is comparison always the thief of joy?
If comparison is the thief of joy, why is it so bloody hard to actually stop comparing yourself to other people? Why do humans even compare themselves in the first place? Is there such a thing as healthy comparison? How can we use comparison to improve our lives?
In today’s episode of the matcha diaries, we attempt to answer these questions, as well as many others surrounding the complex topic of comparison. So many blogs/podcast episodes on this topic we found online always had one main takeaway: “Stop comparing yourself to others''! And whilst that sounds great in theory, in practice this always seemed to prove impossible and slightly too simplistic… So we decided to do a little digging ourselves and explore the scientific reasons behind human’s seemingly endless need for comparison. 💭
Obviously, we are NOT experts in this field and just reflecting on the research we found online (all our sources can be found below). But we still hope that this can give you some food for thought and most importantly, shift your perspective on comparison a little! 💚
So pour yourself a matcha and enjoy! 🍵 Follow us on instagram (@the.matcha.diaries) to let us know what you thought of the episode and your own thoughts on comparison!
