Conor Moore - what a character
He was one of my very first guests on The Mario Rosenstock Podcast – that was almost three years ago and things have just gone from strength to strength for Conor Moore. He has continued to build his repertoire of impressions, including characters from the world of Formula one, he has shared a stage with Roy Keane on The Overlap live show, performed across Ireland on his very own tour, and the list goes on. You’ll hear all the great stories in this episode. Matt Cooper has the Last Word
Ive always admired Matt Cooper’s work ethic. He presents a two and a half hour radio show every day on Today FM, writes two newspaper columns, presents not one but two podcasts, he writes books, he’s a father of 5 and lord knows what else he packs in to his day.In our chat on this episode of the Mario Rosenstock podcast, Matt opens up about what drives him to work so hard, how he plans his day in order to get everything done, and the times when he came very close to burnout and the impact that this has had on his health. We also talk about the importance of really listening to radio and podcast guests, keeping fit and healthy after 50, and his latest book ‘Who really owns Ireland?’.COMEDY – Its awards season and Eamon Dunphy and John Giles discuss the Irish interest, and also ask why there’s so much ‘todger’ on sceen these days.Produced by Patrick Haughey of AudioBrand

Luke O’Neill shows me the science
Luke O’Neill was a very well-known scientist before the covid pandemic but he pretty much took on celebrity status during it, such was the demand for his expertise on TV, radio, print, and podcasts. He even became a very popular Gift Grub character on the Ian Dempsey Breakfast show on Today FM.On this episode of The Mario Rosenstock Podcast we chat about all sorts of topics like his love of music - including his recent trip to vegas to watch U2’s first show in Sphere, how he felt about his near-celebrity status during Covid and how conscious he was of becoming over exposed, and I also throw a few of my trademark ‘talk to me like I’m a 2-yr old’ questions at Luke which I think you’ll enjoy. REPOST – A no-filters conversation with Ciara Kelly
We’re dipping back into the archives this week and bringing you one of our most popular interviews of 2023. Ciara Kelly co-presents the Newstalk breakfast show with Shane Coleman and in this no holds barred conversation from Feb 2023, we get stuck right into so many topics from women in media and twitter users versus radio show texters, to pronouns, gender identity, and the right to hold an opinion that may not be too popular. I also learn about what Ciara was like in school and how she ended up as a GP. Shh...its Colm Williamson of Waterford Whispers News
On this episode I meet the man behind the brilliant satirical news site Waterford Whispers News, Colm Williamson. Since launch, WWN has garnered international attention and viral popularity many times over. Some of the stories are just plain fun, but some are doing their bit to hold people and institutions in powerful positions to account, when Colm and the team feel it’s needed. In out chat, Colm shares the fascinating story of how an idea he had just after he found himself unemployed back in the recession of 2009, has grown into a comedy institution , and all the highs and lows along the way. Winging it with Tommy Bowe
I’ve always noticed that rugby players, in particular retired rugby players, have brilliant stories to tell. There’s so much craic and mischief going on behind the scenes in the changing room and when they’re off on tour and then you and I are lucky enough to hear all about it, when a sufficient amount of time has passed and its safe to share the stories!Tommy Bowe is one of those great former rugby internationals who also happens to be a brilliant storyteller, so I was delighted when he agreed to join me as special guest here on the Mario Rosenstock Podcast. I got some juicy behind-the-scenes stories and gossip which I think you’ll enjoy, but we also talk about his childhood growing up in a border county when the British army very much still a presence there, how he very nearly did not become a professional rugby player, his new career as a TV presenter (known for regular hilarious gaffes – 10 siblings, anybody?), and his successful clothing company XV Kings which has just turned 10 years old.COMEDY - David McWilliams reminisces about causing trouble on ‘culchies shopping day’ on 8th December in his youthProduced by Patrick Haughey of AudioBrand

We continue the fascinating conversation that I had with leading psychotherapist and author Tony Bates. We covered so much ground in part 1 (and if you haven’t heard it yet I strongly encourage you to do so) and in this episode we chat about many more very interesting and important things, including family trauma and therapy, the scourge of over-prescription of medication worldwide, particularly for young kids, his experience with patients who use a lot of cannabis, and also why we should all embrace pain. Tony Bates talks therapy, trauma, and family ties
Tony Bates is one of Ireland’s leading psychologists. He has worked with thousands of patients throughout his many decades in practise, most notably as head of the Department of Psychology at St James’s Hospital, a position he held for over 30 years. He also created Jigsaw, The National Centre for Youth Mental Health. And if you’re a fan of Bressie’s podcast, Where is my Mind?, you’re probably very familiar with Tony from his regular appearances on that great show. But having spent his career seeking to understand the lives of others, Tony has now turned his therapeutic eye on himself and describes the events and people in his own life that have made him the insightful thinker and teacher that he is today. His new book is called Breaking the Heart Open: The Shaping of a Psychologist. And In it, he recalls the traumatic events in his own childhood that brought him to a very low point in his 30s ,the years he spent building himself back up, from which he spent years, and what he has learned from the many people in his care over the years. Tony shares that story with me, but this whole area of trauma, recovery, family relationships, therapy, and learning about ourselves and who we are is one that fascinates me, so we talked a lot about all these things too. Beyond politics with Paschal Donohoe
You have probably heard a lot of interviews with Minister Paschal Donoghue on radio and on TV, but I’m pretty sure you will not have heard one quite like this. My plan is going into this particular interview was, not to talk about all the usual topics you’ll hear the minister talk about in the media and in the Dail, but rather to get behind all of that, to learn about the person, not the politician. And thankfully, Paschal was well up for having that kind of conversation. You are about to hear a whole different side to Paschal Donoghue in this episode of The Mario Rosenstock Podcast.COMEDY - Kevin Bakhurst, RTE Director General, has just introduced a salary cap for presenters – and they’re not happy. Part 2 of The return of Al Porter
This chat with Al Porter was genuinely one of the most enjoyable conversations I have had on this podcast series to date. Not only is Al totally hilarious, he is also deeply intelligent, self aware, and has a very powerful personal story to tell. He has just come out the other side of an incredibly difficult few years where he was, by his own doing, completely out of the public eye, having been very much in it for many years. But now he’s back on tour, selling out venues again, and he joined me in studio to share his story and tell me about how it feels to be back in action. This is part two of that conversation, and just like part 1, we have a real treat in store for you. The return of Al Porter
A few years ago Al Porter was one of Ireland’s most rapidly rising stars in the entertainment world. He had become the youngest headliner in Vicar Street’s history at 21, his award-winning stand up was receiving rave reviews from critics, he had his own TV and radio shows, and big plans in motion for the USA. And then, as he says himself, it “all fell apart”. For reasons that we cover in this episode, Al suddenly stepped back from all of his public work and spent the next few years living at home, eating and drinking heavily, and mentally not in a good place. But now, after several years of self-reflection and analysis, and some serious work on himself to get sober, Al is back. He’s selling out venues with his new stand up show, supporting great comedians like Reginald D Hunter, and he’s off the booze and looking and feeling great. We met up in the studio earlier this week and over the course of almost two hours, Al told me the full story about the last few years he has spent out of the public eye and how he has got himself back on track. This is part 1 of that conversation. Communicating with Terry Prone
I have heard some fascinating life stories in my time, but Terry Prone’s is up there with one of the best. Tánaiste Micheál Martin makes a seriously good impression
I’m pretty sure that you will not have heard an interview with Tánaiste Micheál Martin quite like this one before. The man is great craic, full of funny stories and banter – it’s a side to him that we rarely get to see in the Dail and on current affairs shows, but we certainly get a taste of it in this episode. We talk about his love of impressions, and he even does a few for us! He tells me what he thinks of my Gift Grub caricature of him, he also talks about his relationship with Leo Varadkar behind the scenes, time he spent in the north trying to understand the unionist perspective, the return of Bertie and his rumoured bid for the Presidency, getting into bed with Sinn Fein, and and lots more. We actually stayed in studio chatting for over an hour and a half and so we’ve decided to break the conversation up into two parts, the first of which you’re about to press play on. Senator Michael McDowell goes all in on Sinn Fein
Senator Michael McDowell has been a TD, Tanaiste, Minster for Justice, and the country's Attorney General; he’s currently a barrister, a senator, and a columnist for the Irish Times. How he found the time to join me for an hour-long chat for this podcast I’ll never know, but Im very glad he did because we got through some great topics, including how broken a state Ireland once was when the tax rate was at 77% and the state owned absolutely everything, why the UK legal system allows for people like Russell Brand to be splashed all over the papers before being found guilty, his distrust of Sinn Fein, and why he knows the words to several Wolfe Tones songs!

Are we all just frogs in boiling water? John Gibbons on his 20-year climate crusade
2023 has been a year of wildfires, extreme weather, and record temperatures – is it all down to climate change? To answer that question we invited climate commentator John Gibbons back to the studio for a conversation that I think you’re going to find very interesting ( and probably alarming). John Gibbons has been researching, campaigning and consistently appearing in the media about the climate crisis for over 20 years and even though it’s often a thankless job, his passion and resolve are stronger than ever. This episode probably isn’t typical of the series, its not exactly a barrel of laughs, but it’s a topic I strongly believe needs to be out there more and John is one of the clearest and most passionate climate commentators in this country and is well worth paying attention to. At one stage during our chat, Shane Coleman broke into a quite excellent impression of former finance minister Charlie McCreevy. Unfortunately I couldn't convince him to do a few more, but we did get stuck into a few political topics, as you might expect. Shane was one of Ireland’s leading political correspondents in print media for many years before joining Newstalk as political editor followed by his current position of presenter of Newstalk breakfast with co-host Ciara Kelly. It's hard to describe Roddy Collins. Footballer, football manager, boxer, brother of a boxing world champion, practical joker, social commentator, author..the list goes on.

REPOST: Frank Greaney makes an appearance
We’re on a short summer break at the moment and so we’re resurfacing some of our favourite and most popular episodes from the last few months. This episode first aired in November 2022 - its a fascinating chat with Frank Greaney, Courts Correspondent with Newstalk and Today FM, and also podcast host, author, and restaurateur!
I love Frank’s on-air appearances with Matt Cooper and they have been inspiring quite a few Gift Grub sketches recently. When you hear Frank talk about what he does, why he does it and the cases that have made the most impact on him, you’ll understand why he is so compelling to listen to.
Frank reveals what inspired him to get into the field of crime, it's impact on him and his thoughts on judicial sentencing in Ireland. We also explore how far Ireland has come in the last 40 years as Frank speaks about his hit podcast Inside The Crime, Season 2.

Some of my favourite bits of the year so far
It's never easy to pick easy to pick highlights from the series because there genuinely is far too much to choose from. So I’ve tried to find a few clips that represent the wide range of guests, topics, and laughs that we tend to have on this show every week.
So what’s coming up?
Jarlath Regan of the brilliant ‘Irishman Abroad’ podcast will be talking about why he took up running during Covid, how beneficial it has been for his mental health, and teaming up with Sonia O’Sullivan to make a whole podcast series dedicated to running!
Newstalk’s Ciara Kelly will talk about some of the obstacles that she faced being a woman trying to carve out a career as a broadcaster. And we also talk about the perilous nature of expressing opinions these days.
MEP Maria Walsh talks about coming out publicly right after winning the rose of Tralee and the journey she went on afterwards.
And Keith Duffy talks about the very early days of Boyzone, why he has an issue with Irish audiences, and that infamous Late Late show appearance when Gay Byrne was a little bit rude to them, to put it mildly.
I hope you enjoy the show

Tadhg Hickey – A Portrait of the Piss Artist as a Young Man
Tadhg Hickey is a comedian, a singer, an actor, an author, and he is also a long-time friend of the Mario Rosenstock Podcast.
Tadhg was also a regular guest on the radio show I used to present on Today FM on Sundays before we started this podcast. On one of those Sunday shows Tadhg joined me for a long and fascinating chat about his recovery from alcohol addiction. What was particularly interesting was that he didn’t just talk about how awful it was (and of course so much of it was), but he also talked about some of the funny sides to that life, the kind of trouble he’d get into, the wild parties he was at, and the people he met.
The way he talked about his story was so different to how we generally hear topics like alcoholism discussed in the media, and it obviously caught people’s ears. Because soon after that chat, he was contacted by someone in the publishing industry and invited to write a book about his life and recovery. That book is coming out very soon – it’s called A Portrait of the Piss Artist as a Young Man and you’ll find all the info you need about that and his upcoming stand up comedy tour here https://www.tadhghickey.com/home
In this episode, Tadhg joins me on this episode to talk all about the book, comedy, addiction, drink and ecstasy, twitter spats, doom scrolling, colonialism and independence!

Alison Curtis on the other side of the mic
Alison Curtis and I have been close friends and colleagues for over two decades. We worked on the same show for many years (The Ian Dempsey breakfast show, where I still work) and to say there are a few very entertaining stories from that period would be an understatement – and yes, you’ll get to hear a couple of them in this conversation (the ones the lawyers said were ok to share!).
Alison has also presented her own weekend breakfast show on Today FM for ten years now and in that time she has grown the audience at an incredible rate and it is now one of the most-listened to shows on the station. But how much do you really know about the lady behind the mic? In this chat we talk about Alison’s early life, growing up on a ranch in the Canadian countryside, losing her parents at a young age, what brought her to Ireland and why she fell in love with the place, and lots more.

Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan on why cannabis should be legalised
Luke 'Ming' Flanagan is not your average politician. He looks different, he acts differently, and since his very first day in politics he has been tirelessly campaigning for the decriminalisation of cannabis. And because of that, he has often not been taken seriously by other politicians many of whom have either overlooked him or made fun of him. But Ming has certainly been taken seriously by voters , climbing the ranks from local councillor to TD, to the MEP position he holds today.

Paul Williams - Why I chose a life of crime
I've always been fascinated by the lives of crime journalists. It’s a career that involves exposing criminals and crime gangs, putting yourself in dangerous situations, and often being at the receiving end of death threats. What’s it like to live a life like that and why would anyone want to do it?
These are just some of the questions that I wanted to ask Paul Williams, one of Ireland’s best-known and most experienced crime journalists. Paul has spent decades profiling Ireland’s most dangerous criminals and, in many cases, they have hit back, to the extent that Paul ended up with 24-hour Garda protection after a hoax bomb was planted outside his family home.

There was a time in Ireland where honest communication about personal issues or potentially controversial subjects was not our strong suit. As my special guest on this episode, comedian Anne Gildea, says – “Nothing was said about anything – it was all mystery.”
Little by little we became more open and liberal about these things however one of the issues that stayed very much buried under the carpet up until very recently was something that affects over 51% of the population! That’s the menopause. Anne Gildea wanted to do something about this, so she wrote a whole stand-up comedy show about it called ‘How to get the menopause and enjoy it’.
In our chat she tells me all about it, and we also chat about loads more, like Anne being a founding member of the smash hit comedy Trio 'The Nualas', old Ireland versus modern Ireland, and why she thinks Joanne McNally is simply a legend..
Anne is currently touring this great show - check out her website for upcoming dates https://www.annegildea.com/shows

The Waterford man who who dreamt of making a movie...and did !
A lot of people come up with great ideas for businesses or creative projects, but only a few of them actually make it happen. Tony Kelly is one of those rare people. An actor and comedian, Tony created a comedy character many years ago call Gar Campion who is a very talented but deeply flawed hurler. He started putting Gar in sketches on YouTube and in the years since he has fought tooth and nail to turn The Hurler into a feature film, set in his native Waterford City. And, against all the odds, he has just made that happen
In our chat, Tony tells me the fascinating story of how he did it (and it was not easy folks); we also talk about stand up comedy, the uniqueness of Waterford (Tony’s home town) and the power of sheer grit and determination

Calling out crazy house prices and rip-off rentals
Just like tens of thousands of people across Ireland, Ciaran Mulqueen spent a long, long time trying to buy a home. As he searched through property listings online, he was taken aback by some of the tiny, poor quality properties for sale and rent at ridiculously high prices. Not only that, but so many of the photos of various properties were clearly photoshopped, and many of them claimed to be in salubrious locations that were actually many miles away!
Ciaran was moved to call out some of these adverts, and so he started posting them on an instagram page he called Crazy House Prices. The channel now has tens of thousands of followers, it has grown into other equally popular social channels, and Ciaran has even just published a best-selling book called How to buy a home in Ireland.
In this episode Ciaran shares his home hunting story, the good the bad and the ugly of property adverts, and a few thoughts on where it has all gone wrong

Georgie Crawford – the amazing story behind The Good Glow
A lot of people with amazing stories have sat in front of me in studio since we started The Mario Rosenstock Podcast, but Georgie Crawford must be right up there as having one of the most dramatic and compelling stories of them all.
It’s a story about a cancer diagnosis at a young age, a surrogacy interrupted by war, deep self-doubt, and more. But Georgie turned all of this negativity in to something so positive and impactful when she created The Good Glow podcast, which has grown into a highly successful health and wellness brand. In this episode, Georgie tells her story and tells me about her new book called Glow: Five Steps To Create The Life You Dream About.

Chris Johns 2 - overpaid bankers, dangerous robots, and Sinn Fein's cunning plan
We got a huge response to the first part of my chat with economist and podcaster Chris Johns. Thanks for all your emails, tweets and Instagram messages about it – I read a few of them out at the start of this episode. In this, part 2 of my interview with Chris I continue to ask him to ‘talk to me like a 2 year old’ and answer some of my simple questions that can have complex answers. Questions like can Sinn Fein really solve the housing crisis, why Artificial Intelligence has the potential to be so incredibly dangerous, and are bankers paid far too much money? Chris, as ever, has plenty to say.
In comedy, my podcast colleagues are talking about the coronation of King Charles, including Eamon Dunphy on The Stand and Tommy and Hector on the Tommy, Hector and Laurita podcast.

Chris Johns: Boris, bankers, and is the UK a basket case?
Chris Johns is a regular contributor to Eamon Dunphy’s The Stand podcast and he also writes regularly about politics and economics. More recently he has launched his own podcast with fellow economist Jim Power, called ‘The Other Hand’.
I read and listen to his work regularly and always find him to be highly intelligent, wonderful with words, and very insightful about a lot of the issues I find fascinating – like who or what is ‘the markets’ and why do they seem to exert so much control over all of us? How did the UK become such a basket case so quickly? Why do economists get paid so much to make predictions that 90% of the time turn out to be wrong?
There was so much I wanted to ask Chris that we ended up talking for almost 2 hours, so we’ve decided to chop it up into two parts for you. This is part 1 in which we learn about Chris early life and how he was the first of his family to go to University, how he ended up being able to semi-retire at 55, his brilliant take on Boris Johnson and UK politics, why economists should never get paid to make predictions, why Facebook should never have been allowed to get so big, and lots more.

Brenda Power on the perils of opinions
These days it can be a dangerous thing to hold an opinion. It’s a bit like holding a firework, it has the potential to blow up in your face. The whole subject of opinions, freedom of speech, and discussion is one that fascinates me so I was delighted that one of Ireland‘s foremost opinion writers agreed to join me on the podcast this week to chat all about it.
Brenda Power has been writing opinions columns regularly for decades, she’s a pro at it, and she has attracted her fair share of controversy over some of the things she has written. So as you can imagine, we had plenty to talk about.

Brian has had a lot of health issues over the last few years and we do briefly touch on this part of his story, but we spend most of our time together chatting about the things you may not know about him - how he grew up in a pretty dysfunctional home during a very dysfunctional time in Belfast, how a teacher in his school discovered his voice and set him on the path he follows to this day, reconciling with a brother he didn’t talk to for years, and so many other very personal and poignant stories.
But we also have such great craic and of course he gets a few celebs phoning in that want to chat to him live on the podcast, including David Norris, Van Morrison, and Professor Luke O’Neill.

The comedy sketches that won gold at the Irish Podcast Awards 2022.
One of my big highlights of 2022 was winning the award for Best Comedy Podcast at the Irish Podcast Awards. When we set out to make this show one of the things we wanted to do was have brand new and exclusive comedy sketches in every episode and also to weave in little bits of ad-lib comedy into every interview on the show to make it different and to surprise you and my guest. We want this show to be unique, to offer you something that you’re not going to get on any other podcast, and that’s what we’re trying to do every week through comedy. So we were delighted that the judges at the Irish Podcast Awards recognised this and awarded us the gold gong!

Shaking up the Seanad, with Senator Lynn Ruane
Its fair to say that Lynn Ruane not your “typical” Irish politician – she’s from a very working class background in Dublin, developed a drug addiction in her teens, became a mother at 15, and has generally had a life that might be called ‘unconventional’ in the context of politics in Ireland.
And yet that’s what makes Lynn such an interesting and effective politician – she represents a huge yet traditionally under-represented part of Ireland, shakes things up in government building and shines a light on some long-standing and accepted injustices that have arguably have been allowed to last for far too long.
Lynn is also so much fun; she’s insightful, open and honest and we chat about all sorts of interesting stuff, including how her passion can be judged as aggression, the classist politician that inspired the title of her book ‘People Like Me’, and why Ireland’s drug laws are now so outdated and in need of reform.
We also had a lot of the regulars phoning in to speak to Senator Ruane, including ‘Ballymun Paschal’, The Two Norries, and her fellow Senator, David Norris.

Reliving Riverdance with Bill Whelan
Bill Whelan was NOT expecting to get a call from Michael Flatley during our conversation for this week’s episode. But despite the fact that they haven’t always seen eye to eye, it all seemed to go pretty well.
The two men of course worked together on Riverdance – Bill composed the iconic score, and Flatley was his lead dancer, along with Jean Butler. Arguably, it was a piece of music and dance that helped changed the face and perception of Ireland forever.
Bill has just published his memoirs – The Road to Riverdance – and he gives me so many fascinating behind-the-scenes stories from its creation and success, including revealing the inspiration for the music's unique time signatures which still compel me to this day.
But its not all about Riverdance. Bill has written and produced music for all the greats, including U2, Kate Bush and Van Morrison. In this conversation, which I loved every minute of, he shares so many stories from a career working at the highest levels of the music industry.

Frank Greaney makes an appearance
If you listen to Today FM, Newstalk or that great Inside the Crime podcast, you will be familiar with Frank Greaney. He is fast becoming one of Ireland’s most respected and listened-to courts correspondents. I love his on-air appearances with Matt Cooper and they have been inspiring quite a few Gift Grub sketches recently.

Marina Hyde on madness of UK politics
Like a lot of people in Ireland I have recently become fascinated by UK politics. It has just gone mad in Westminster, and some of the characters at the centre of the drama are stranger than fiction. My guest on this episode captures this craziness better than anyone I know – Marina Hyde of The Guardian newspaper.

Tom Dunne - the musical mastermind gives me an education
I love music. There are few things I love more than a deep and detailed conversation about music. Im just fascinated about how songs are written, what drives the people who write them, what makes one song a worldwide hit and another a flop. There’s just so much to learn and discover.
So for this episode I invited my old friend Tom Dunne back into the studio to continue the chat we started a few months ago here on the pod. In this one, we talk the greats, both past and present. From The Beatles, Dylan and Bowie to Al Green, Don McLean, Harry Styles and Lizzo. He also shares his experience of seeing Paul McCartney at Glastonbury and his opinions on whether Harry Styles fits the typical bill for headlining Slane. Even if you are not obsessive about music like I am, you’re still going to love Tom’s brilliant stories, told in his own inimitable way.

Roddy ‘The Rodfather’ Collins – Football, fighting and family
It's hard to describe Roddy Collins. Footballer, football manager, boxer, brother of a boxing world champion, practical joker, social commentator, author..the list goes on.
Not only does Roddy have great stories to tell, he also tells them so well. We talk about life in football’s lower divisions, settling local disputes in the ring, practical jokes that went too far, and walking the streets of Dublin chatting to homeless people and hearing their stories.
Roddy’s new book is called The Rodfather: Inside the Beautiful (Ugly, Ridiculous, Hilarious) Game

Gary O’Hanlon’s Kitchen Rules
If you’re a fan of The Restaurant on Virgin Media Television, you’ll be familiar with Gary O’Hanlon. He’s one of the chefs in the kitchen helping the celebrities to cook their menus - you can’t miss him: huge mohawk, big smile, and an even bigger personality. He has had a very successful career in the fascinating world of restaurants and he’s also very involved in radio, podcasts and TV.
On this episode of The Mario Rosenstock Podcast, Gary and I talk about the cult of the celebrity chef, working with Marco Pierre White, why some people turn in to complete divas when they’re out in a restaurant and treat the waiting staff like crap, his love of Man Utd, and some very personal topics that might resonate with you or someone you know.
COMEDY
We don’t often do this on the podcast but there is a breaking news story that we need to cover. Just when you thought the controversy about the Irish women’s football team and ‘that song’ had all blown over, the team is right back in the middle of an even bigger scandal. Press play for the latest.

“Some people are just gobshites…and they need a slap” - Ranger Ray Goggins on ramming Garda squad cars
If you’re a fan of RTE’s Hell Week series, you’ll be very familiar with Ray Goggins – a former Irish army Ranger (basically our version of the SAS or Navy Seals), now chief instructor on this incredibly popular TV series.
Ray joined me for a fascinating chat a couple of episodes ago, but we chopped out a part of that conversation and held it back for this special bonus episode. Because that shocking video of the repeated ramming of a Garda car in Cherry Orchard had just emerged and I was very interested in what Ray thought about it, given his background. He had some pretty strong views, which you’re about to hear.
I also asked Ray him about war movies and if any of them really capture the reality of what happens on the ground in a conflict.
I hope you enjoy this one.

Dave Moore on the other side of the mic
I work with Dave Moore every day. We sit mere yards from each other in Today FM, have done for years. We’ve shared studios and the odd night out. So naturally I thought I knew Dave well, but it turns out that there is SO much to this man that I had no idea about.
Like his successful career as a songwriter and music producer before he ever started to work in radio. Like the totally random and unexpected way he ended up working with Dermot Whelan over 20 years ago now. Or like the recent hit Netflix series that featured Dave’s reworking of a Radiohead classic. And so much more besides.
So in this episode of The Mario Rosenstock Podcast, you’re going to learn a lot more about Dave Moore, and I think you’ll get a good laugh too.
COMEDY:

Rory Hearne talks "Gaffs", young people and what we can do to address the housing crisis
Renting, eviction, living with parents, pensions and politics. Rory Hearne joins me to talk about a subject I am both fascinated by and very angry about, the Irish Housing Crisis. From the difficulty of living at home with parents, to how our pensions are feeding the vulture funds and how we can start to take action for change.
Turns out that Rory and I have quite a bit in common - we're both 'blaa-heads' (ie from Waterford!) and we both spent a few years living in private rented accommodation during childhood. Press play to hear our stories, opinions and solutions about this major issue of our times.
Rory's book is called "GAFFS: Why No One Can Get a House, and What We Can Do About"

Clelia Murphy – life in, and after, Fair City
For 22 years Clelia Murphy played Niamh Cassidy in Fair City – what a rollercoaster ride that was. The storylines in Ireland’s most famous soap are the stuff of legend, and Clelia / Niamh got her fair share of them. I used to get some great material for Gift Grub from Fair City.
In this episode of The Mario Rosenstock Podcast, Clelia opens up about life in Fair City, why she left, and the great roles she now enjoys on the BBC and beyond. She also vents about poor etiquette amongst her fellow electric car owners, reveals the reactions she used to get from Fair City fans when out in public, and Clelia also gets calls from Leo Varadkar, Paschal Donohoe, and her former Fair City colleagues.

Ranger Ray Goggins - from the Irish Army to RTE’s Ultimate Hell Week
True story: as Ultimate Hell Week chief instructor, Ray Goggins, was climbing the stairs up to the studio for our chat, he was scoping out all of the entry and exit points, and working out the fastest escape route from the building if he were to need one. Thankfully he didn’t need to make a quick escape, but as he explains, you can take the man out of the Rangers, but you can’t take the Rangers out of the man. Ray served in the Irish Army for 26 years, including 17 years in the Army Ranger Wing as an operator and leader in a Tier 1 Special Operations Unit – he has been in incredibly dangerous situations, seen awful sights, and learned so much about himself and others along the way. He shares so many great stories in this episode of The Mario Rosenstock Podcast, and he even gets a few interesting callers, including fellow Cork man Roy Keane, Christy Moore, Ray Darcy, and even Francis Brennan!Ultimate Hell Week: The Professionals – RTE 1 https://www.rte.ie/tv/programmes/1244359-ultimate-hell-week-the-professionals/Ray’s training and development company https://coreskilltraining.org/Ray’s book: Ranger 22 – Lessons from the front https://www.gillbooks.ie/biography/biography/ranger-22 COMEDY: The Ploughing Championships are finally back! Willa White - "Failure isn't falling down, it's staying down"
I just love getting a great recommendation for a podcast guest that really, really works out. When The Two Norries joined me for a chat a few months ago, they told me that I should really interview this guy called Willa White , an actor and a comedian. I had heard of Willa before but didn’t know too much about him - so we checked him out , and my goodness does this man have an incredible story to tell - from an abusive childhood to drug abuse and how his road to recovery led him to find comedy and acting (in roles including Love/Hate and The Savage Eye). In a humbling and honest conversation, Willa opens up about his upbringing, escapism, jail time, performance and forgiveness.Between laughs and tears, this is one story that you won't want to miss. COMEDY: It's an exciting week for us here at the Mario Rosenstock Podcast as we’re up for ‘Best Comedy’ at the Irish Podcast Awards! Debunking climate change myths with John Gibbons
I love a good conspiracy theory. But even more, I love to hear them stripped down, analysed, and debunked. On this episode of the Mario Rosenstock Podcast, Ireland’s best known environmental journalist and campaigner, John Gibbons, joins me to look at some of the most prevalent and popular ‘myths’ about climate change, and prove them wrong. John is very passionate about this subject and he’s not afraid to tell it like it is and ruffle a few feathers here and there, and he does so in very plain, accessible English - which isn’t always the case when it comes to the topic of climate change. Have a listen and if you don’t agree with something or would like to have your say on the topic, drop me a line to mariorosenstock@gmail.com COMEDY: The ‘hot’ topic of the week has been spiralling energy costs and how we’re going to go about reducing our consumption of energy. REPOST: Marion McKeone – Trump rallies, warzones and stories from the road
We got an incredible reaction to this episode so we thought it only fair to pop it up to the top of the page! Marion - one half of Cal and Marion's US Slot on Matt Cooper's Last Word - is a legend in the world of journalism, in particular her coverage of US politics and culture. If you didn't hear this the first time around I hope you enjoy it - and if you did, enjoy it again! Original show notes:Marion McKeone is in a league of her own when it comes to reporting the big stories from the States. Marion is US Correspondent at the Business Post, has a weekly slot along with Cal Thomas on Matt Cooper’s Last Word on Today FM, and appears regularly on RTE, BBC, NPR and many more stations. And boy has she lived an interesting life – she has worked on the front lines in war torn countries, travelled around every corner of the US and seen some pretty disturbing sights, and spent time with some of Donald Trump’s most extremist supporters. Marion shares some of her most interesting experiences here in this episode.COMEDYAre you giving dry January a go? Joanne McNally is, and its not going well. REPOST: Who Killed Michael Collins?
On the centenary of the Big Fellow’s death, I thought you might like another (or a first) chance to hear a fascinating conversation between myself and ‘historical entertainer’ Paddy Cullivan. Paddy is currently performing his show ‘The Murder of Michael Collins’ to sold-out venues around Ireland – check out https://www.paddycullivan.com/ for info. Enjoy! Original show notes: As well as being the front man of the Camembert Quartet (Late Late Show house band), Paddy Cullivan is an ‘historical entertainer’. What is that, you might ask? Well, he cleverly brings together all of the things he loves - history, music, comedy and the visual arts – and combines them into stage shows where he takes big historical stories and makes them accessible and entertaining, while also challenging the ‘accepted narratives’ of these pieces of history. His latest show focuses on the murder of Michael Collins at Bealna Blath – if you’re an Irish history buff you’re going to love (or hate!)hearing all about that, but we also get deep into other fascinating areas likeconspiracy theories, 9/11, JFK’s assassination, and why, as someone who knowsso much about history, he is a deeply cynical about how the Ukraine War isbeing handled politically. Its deep stuff, but as ever on this podcast, full ofgreat craic. Sowe thought it was a nice time to go back over some of our very first comedysketches and pick one our favourites to play you again. He was shockedand appalled what he witnessed and he sent out a very angry tweet to thateffect. News just in! Why journalism needs saving
This week I’m joined again by one of my favourite guests, Larissa Nolan. Informed, opinionated, and fascinating on so many issues, last week Larissa and I had a fascinating discussion about the housing crisis, this week we talk about the current state of journalism and why it needs a major shot in the arm. Comedy Blockbuster Summer Special
August is a great time for some light podcast listening, so we’ve put together a very special episode for you, packed full of my favourite comedy sketches from over the last few months of the Mario Rosenstock Podcast. I hope you enjoy – and if you do, subscribe, follow and tell a friend!Sketches: 1. Both Tony Holohan and Paul Reid are stepping down from their respective roles in the health service – as two prominent figures throughout Ireland’s Covid pandemic response, there’s an ‘end of an era’ feel about it all. Of course there were going away drinks, and The Mario Rosenstock podcast had secret microphones in the room – take a listen… 2. Now that Boris Johnson has finally succumbed to the pressure and resigned, what is he going to do next? Enter the Love Island villa of course!! 3. So EVERYONE is talking about this GAA catfish story by The 2 Johnnies. You know the one about the girl who created several different fake social media profiles in order to lure in several GAA players and others, including Johnny B of The 2Johnnies. It is fascinating stuff. They talk all about it on their 2 Johnnies Podcast. But loads of other podcasters have been talking about it too, including Eamon Dunphy and John Giles on The Stand.. 4. What about those crazy queues and delays at Dublin airport – have you been affected yourself? Well Ryanair never misses a trick, and they have come up with a very ‘interesting’ offering for passengers that don’t want to be stuck waiting at the airport for hours. We’ve got our hands on the ad, check it out.. 5. Katie Taylor enjoyed a huge win against Amanda Serrano in April , and when someone achieves the kind of fame that Katie now has, the phone starts ringing, big time. You get calls from all sorts of people that you mightn’t expect to hear from. We got exclusive access to Katie’s voicemails, and it turns out her phone has predictably been hopping.. 6. As the ‘Wagatha Christie’ trial came to an end, Roy Keane and Jamie Carragher had a heated debate about it on Sky Sports… GET IN TOUCH:https://www.instagram.com/mariorosenstockofficial/https://twitter.com/giftgrubmariomariorosenstock@gmail.comThe Mario Rosenstock Podcast is produced by Patrick Haughey of AudioBrand Hosted on Acast. Larissa Nolan gets personal about the housing crisis
I’ve been presenting this podcast for over a year now, and a recurring theme has been the immense difficulty that many of us face when trying to buy a home or find a place with affordable rent. Guests like Bressie, TD Richard Boyd Barrett, and writer Mark O’ Halloran have opened up about their struggles trying to find a place to live, and it is really is a sign of the times when successful people like they have such difficulty in this regard. This is also a topic that I’m deeply interested in and so I wanted to dedicate a whole episode of the podcast to it. One of my favourite people to chat to about societal issues like these is journalist Larissa Nolan, not only is she very passionate and informed about the housing crisis, she has also personal experience, having faced homelessness just a few years ago. So in this episode we talk about her personal experience, what has led to this country facing in to such a housing crisis, who is to blame and who might be able to get us out of it. It’s a bit of a different one, but I think you’re going to really enjoy itCOMEDYWe take a little trip down memory lane and to one of our favourite comedy sketches from the last few months. It was a rare occasion when my special guest played a starring role in the comedy sketch – the guest was Niall Boylan, one of Ireland’s best known phone-in talk show presenters. Host of The Niall Boylan Show AND Late Nite Live on Classic Hits radio, Niall is a master at moderating live on air discussions with callers, many of which can get very heated. Meet the DirtBirds!
When we were all locked down during Covid and getting 150 funny whatsapp videos sent to the phone every day, there’s a very good chance that one of those videos was a sketch from the DirtBirds - comedy duo Sinead Culbert and Sue Collins. To describe what they do, here’s the description of their latest tour: "In a world where women are expected to have the patience of mother Teresa, the arse of Jennifer Lopez, the social media profile of Kim Kardashian and the BMI of Elle McPherson, the pressure is relentless. Dirtbirds’ hilarious new show ‘No Filters’ takes a close look at the barrage of bullshit we are subjected to on a daily basis and reminds us that despite what we’re told, there is no such thing as perfect (except maybe Jamie Dornan’s arse in Fifty Shades Darker)Sue and Sinead have a razor sharp wit, they’re great performers, and they tell it like it is. So as you can imagine, we had a lot of fun in this episode of the Mario Rosenstock podcast. Check out dirtbirds.net for all the info you need about where you can catch the tour.(They’re also at the Paddy Power comedy festival in Dublin this week from today Thursday 21st July – if you’re reading this in time) Hosted on Acast. Oisin McConville on winning, losing and living
This is a very open, honest, and captivating conversation with one of football’s most gifted players. Oisín McConville has won several Ulster titles, All Ireland medals, and a national league title. He became Ulster football’s top scorer and was awarded two All-Stars during his career. But while he was enjoying incredible success on the pitch, Oisin’s personal life was spiralling out of control. A gambling addiction saw him run up massive debts, fall out with friends and family, and have suicidal thoughts. In this episode of The Mario Rosenstock podcast, Oisin opens up about his love (and hate) for football, how he overcame a destructive gambling addiction, and he tells me the fascinating history of Crossmaglen and how the British Army (inadvertently) helped his team succeed. The Irishman who beat Roger Federer
My favourite sport is tennis. I’ve loved it since I was 10 years of age when I first watched Bjorn Borg on Centre Court at Wimbledon. Ever since then, I’ve hit thousands and thousands of tennis balls, I play as often as I can. Why do I love this game so much? Because being on court is a lot like being on stage (you’ll hear why at the start of the episode). But you know what? I actually get more nervous on the court than I do on the stage! So this week I’ve indulged my sporting passion and go deep on tennis. Im joined by former Irish no 1 tennis player Conor Niland. He has played at Wimbledon, taken on the greats, experienced the highs and the lows, and he shares all of those stories on this episode of The Mario Rosenstock Podcast.COMEDY:Now that Boris Johnson has finally succumbed to the pressure and resigned, what is he going to do next? ‘Celebrity solicitor’, ‘Lawyer to the Stars’, ‘Man about town’, ‘Bon viveur’…Gerald Kean has a lot of titles, but to that list we can add tireless charity fundraiser, doting father, and great storyteller. Liberal helpings of Cal Thomas
If you, like me, are a fan of The Last Word with Matt Cooper on Today FM, then you will probably be very familiar with my special guest on this episode, the ever-fascinating Cal Thomas.Cal, along with journalist Marion McKeown, has a weekly slot on Matt’s show, where they debate the big stories and issues happening in the US – Marion generally leans liberally, Cal leans conservatively, and them sometimes they meet somewhere in the middle. Richard Boyd Barrett – Rebel with a cause
If there’s such a thing as a ‘celebrity’ politician then Richard Boyd Barrett would surely make the cut. A very familiar face and voice on TV and radio, Richard is eloquent and outspoken, goes against the grain when it comes to the Dail dress code, and he’s mates with one of the world’s top supermodels Bella Hadid. Well, he doesn’t actually know her, but she does follow him on Instagram and has been sharing a few of his posts recently. More on that, and loads more, in the interview. Check it out. And they’re off! Its Nina Carberry
She’s fresh off the Dancing with the Stars dance floor, winner’s trophy in hand, and she has also just been unveiled as the new coach on Irish Fittest family - Nina Carberry is a seriously busy lady right now. So I was both surprised and delighted when she accepted our invitation to join me for a chat on The Mario Rosenstock Podcast. Nina has had a stellar career as a jockey, and it is very much in her DNA having been born into a famous racing family and then marrying into another! We talk all about her deep love of horses and the sport, her experience on DWTS, her competitive and extremely hard-working nature, and tonnes more! COMEDY So EVERYONE is talking about this GAA catfish story by The 2 Johnnies. You know the one about the girl who created several different fake social media profiles in order to lure in several GAA players and others, including Johnny B of The 2Johnnies. It is fascinating stuff. They talk all about on their 2 Johnnies podcast. But loads of other podcasters have been talking about it too, including Eamon Dunphy on The Stand. Muireann O’Connell talks TV, Tommy Bowe, and tonnes more!
Muireann O’Connell is an incredibly sharp, witty, and well-read person who always has something interesting to say and a great story to tell, and that’s why she makes for the perfect Mario Rosenstock podcast guest. We used to work together in Today FM before Muireann took up a full time role in Virgin Media, and she currently presents Ireland AM with Tommy Bowe and Alan Hughes. We chat about TV vs Radio, insomnia, true crime podcasts, if women are safe on the streets of Ireland, and a recent hilarious moment on Ireland AM involving Daniel O’Donnell on zoom and Majella on the bed. Muireann also gets a few callers, including Ronan O’Gara, wee Daniel, George Hook, and Roy Keane.COMEDYThis week, its all about those crazy queues and delays at Dublin airport – have you been affected yourself? Are you heading off this weekend? Well Ryanair never misses a trick, and they have come up with a very ‘interesting’ offering for passengers that don’t want to be stuck waiting at the airport for hours. REPOST: Ronan O'Gara answers my call
In case you missed it... this is a fascinating insight into the mind of ROG - his mindset, his ambitions, and what makes him cry. First released in March 2021 - but with the week thats in it, a very interesting listen-back.ORIGINAL SHOW NOTES Midway through my interview with ROG there was a pitch invasion. Not the kind either he and I are used to – the kind where a bunch of kids storm the room and demand that I start to do impressions of their father. It was the best kind of interruption to any interview I’ve ever done, have a listen. Pitch invasions aside, ROG did NOT hold back in this chat. From his home in France, he’s unimpressed with how the Irish authorities are approaching lockdowns; he pulled me up on a few of my impressions and my thoughts his Rugby career; and he was incredibly open about how much the mood in the La Rochelle camp needs to improve. But he also shared some touching stories about how he cried watching Rachel Blackmore’s post-win Cheltenham interview; his deep, unwavering love of Cork; and, most importantly, how he well I’m ageing. So basically I’m a seriously HOT 50-yr old (my words not his). Also, in this episode of The Mario Rosenstock Podcast, we’re bringing you some brand new comedy. In a week where mandatory quarantines have dominated the news agenda, I check out what some of my favourite podcasters are saying about it – Tommy and Hector, Blindboy, and David Mcwilliams – and eavesdrop on some not-for-air editorial discussions. Enjoy – and drop me a line any time on the details belowCheers!MarioTwitter: @GiftGrubMarioFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/mariorosenstockofficial/Insta: Working onit!!!Produced by: Patrick Haughey,AudioBrand. I ask David McWilliams to solve the world!
With all of the crazy things that have been happening in the world over the last few years (Brexit, Covid, war, inflation...), who better to ask what this means for you and I and our wallets than the expert economist who can break it all down in the simplest of terms, replete with catchy metaphors and analogies, and laser sharp soundbites.David McWilliams and I met in studio the other day and recorded a conversation that not only picked through the weighty issues of our time like housing, inflation, social inequality and David’s expert opinion on those and more; but David also shared some great stories from his time at the Davos Economic Forum, he revealed why he fell in love with economics all those years ago, and he takes a few calls from the like of Leo Varadkar, Eddie Hobbs and even Blindboy Boatcub! We have a lot of laughs too.And once you’ve had a listen, make sure to check out the line-up for the Dalkey Book Festival which is organised by David and his wife Sian Smyth - https://www.dalkeybookfestival.org/programme-2022/COMEDYWe look across the pond to the gift that keeps on giving – Boris Johnson. So it turns out that he WAS at that Downing Street party after all. You know, the one in the middle of those Covid restrictions, that HIS government introduced! But, as you might expect, this doesn’t change a thing in his view, nothing to see here, no reason to step down, its onwards and upwards …As usual, my fellow podcasters have their own unique take on this story – Nicola Tallant and Vogue Williams and Joanne McNallyEnjoy!Mario GET IN TOUCH:https://www.instagram.com/mariorosenstockofficial/https://twitter.com/giftgrubmariomariorosenstock@gmail.comThe Mario Rosenstock Podcast is produced by Patrick Haughey of AudioBrand Hosted on Acast. Back of the net! with Tony Cascarino
Mick McCarthy was just one of the ‘callers’ who phoned in to chat with this week’s special guest, the great Tony Cascarino. As well as a call from his former gaffer, Tony heard from Roy Keane, Boris Johnson, Steve Staunton, Robbie Keane, and a few more besides – because everyone loves chatting this man. Tony is legend of Irish international football, a highly respected pundit on radio and TV, and a bit of a ‘cheeky chappie’ character to boot.Tony and I chat about sport, poker, footballer salaries, hooliganism, and lots more…COMEDY: Staying with the theme of soccer, it was a HUGE week for the sport – all eyes were on two of the game’s most controversial and divisive characters, and some of the biggest pundits on TV are dissecting all of the details…of Wagatha Christie!Enjoy!Mario GET IN TOUCH:https://www.instagram.com/mariorosenstockofficial/https://twitter.com/giftgrubmariomariorosenstock@gmail.comThe Mario Rosenstock Podcast is produced by Patrick Haughey of AudioBrand Hosted on Acast. Niall Boylan talks Joe Duffy, opinion radio, and surviving life
You might remember a time in the 1990s on Irish radio, when the ‘phone-in show’ was everywhere. Lots of radio stations, particularly in Dublin, had a late night talk show where callers phoned in and ‘expressed their opinions’ about hot topics, to put it mildly! One of the most talented broadcasters behind that genre of radio is my special guest on this episode – Niall Boylan. Niall was at the forefront of late night talk radio back then, but he has also been central to that format's evolution and success right up to today. He is the host of The Niall Boylan Show and Late Nite Live on Classic Hits Radio and he has seen the format change and evolve to reflect the change in Ireland’s society, social norms, and diversity. Indeed he has been a driver of that evolution. Niall has had the most eventful life you can imagine, so we had so much to chat about - I think you're really going to enjoy this one.COMEDYNiall plays a starring role in this week’s brand new and exclusive comedy sketch. He’s presenting his Late Nite Live radio show, the topic is how you would feel about your other half showing off their naked selves on Only Fans, and some familiar voices start phoning in… EnjoyMario GET IN TOUCH:https://www.instagram.com/mariorosenstockofficial/https://twitter.com/giftgrubmariomariorosenstock@gmail.comThe Mario Rosenstock Podcast is produced by Patrick Haughey of AudioBrand Hosted on Acast. Amanda Brunker – Bono, Snoop, Dunphy and Reynards
If you love juicy, behind-the-scenes stories from the heyday of Dublin’s nightclub scene, then you’ve come to the right place. You probably know Amanda Brunker as one of Ireland’s best-known models, columnists and novelists, what you might not have known is that Amanda was also once hostess at Dublin’s most famous celebrity haunt, Reynards. That is where every Irish celebrity and every visiting international celebrity came to hang out and play. And in this episode of The Mario Rosenstock Podcast, Amanda shares some cracking stories about what went on among the rich and famous. Amanda and I also chat about journalism, modelling, how difficult it is to express a strong opinion today, her infamous appearance on stage at Oxegen festival, and her new play Curiosity which is now on at the International gay theatre festival in Dublin – make sure to get along to see it if you can http://www.gaytheatre.ie/programme-2022/curiosity/ COMEDYIt was a massive week for boxer Katie Taylor this week, and when someone achieves the kind of fame that Katie now has, the phone starts ringing, big time. Paul Harrington…douze points!
He’s the Eurovision-winning Rock ‘n’ Roll kid, the lead singer of Michael Flatley’s ‘Celtic Tiger’ stage show, the friend who organised U2 to play at Tony Fenton’s funeral, and the man who convinced Roy Keane to sing a song in Lillie Bordello’s VIP room! A friendly with John Duggan
If you are a sports fan or indeed a fan of Today FM and Newstalk radio, you will instantly recognise the voice of my special guest this week, the great John Duggan. John and I have worked together for over 20 years and in that time he has been one of the most unique, consistent, and recognisable sports broadcasters on air – and he has also been central to the evolution of Off The Ball from a Newstalk Radio show into Ireland’s leading multi-platform sports media brand. Whenever myself and John get together for a coffee or a pint, we generally start chatting about sport, but very quickly find ourselves getting deep about so many other things like US politics, media, life, and beyond! And that’s what I think you’re going to hear in this episode – a great, wide-ranging chat between two old friends, one where I think you’ll hear a totally different side to the person you hear on national radio all the time. There’s lots to come in this one folks.COMEDYSo as you might know I’m still on my national tour (it has been amazing) – and because I’ve been up and down the country several times a week, we’ve been playing you some of our favourite bits of comedy from the podcast from over the last few months, and this week we’re digging out more of the 'celebrity callers' to the show. If you’ve been tuning in regularly, you will know that during almost every interview, a few famous people (ah-em nudge wink) phone in and put some questions to my special guest. We have been having so much fun with this and there’ve been some classic moments. This week, we hear:· ‘Miriam O’Callaghan’ getting a ‘saucy’ recipe from Neven Maguire· Davy Fitz phoning into Ireland’s Fittest Family presenter Mairead Ronan and making all sorts of accusations about his fellow coaches· Roy Keane phoning into his fellow Cork men The Two Norries – and he’s not happyEnjoy!GET IN TOUCH:https://www.instagram.com/mariorosenstockofficial/https://twitter.com/giftgrubmariomariorosenstock@gmail.comThe Mario Rosenstock Podcast is produced by Patrick Haughey of AudioBrand Hosted on Acast. A meeting of minds with Martin Beanz Warde
My special guest on this episode is a comedian, a writer, and a traveller – he’s also one of the most interesting conversationalists that we’ve had on the series. Martin Beanz Warde and I talked for almost two hours about traveller culture and lifestyle, discrimination and acceptance, comedy and anxiety, and so much more. But while we edited the chat down a little, its still longer than most episodes on the series so far, because it deserves the time. It’s a fascinating chat between two people from different backgrounds that find so much common ground over the course of a long conversation – I hope you can take the time to listen closely, and in full.Follow Martin @martinbeanzCOMEDY:So we’re just over one year into The Mario Rosenstock Podcast now and if you’ve been tuning in regularly, you will know that during most interviews, a few famous people (nudge wink) phone in and put some questions to my special guest. We have been having a lot of fun with this and so we thought we’d go back over some of our earlier episodes from the series and find some of our very favourite calls to play you. In case you missed it, here’s one of our favourite episodes from the series so far – my chat with Doireann Garrihy, first published in May 2021, this one’s a lot of fun…What do Pippa O’Connor, Mary Lou McDonald, Maura Higgins, Roz Purcell, and Daithi O’Se have in common? Doireann Garrihy does a frighteningly good impression of all of them. If you follow Doireann on social media or watch The Doireann Project on RTE you’ll know just how talented she is. So it is no surprise just how successful Doireann has become in such a short space of time. Doireann and I have such a laugh throughout this chat – we hear the impressions and the funny stories, but she also has a couple of more serious things to vent about, such as her increasingly love/hate relationship with social media and the impact of spending so much time online. And in a rare Primetime special, Miriam O’Callaghan puts a few of Doireann’s characters through their paces. Exclusive comedy: In this week’s sketch, which is exclusive to YOU as a fan of The Mario Rosenstock Podcast, Pat Kenny can’t keep his cool anylonger after more than a year of talking to 'experts' about Covid. Paddy Cullivan – Conspiracy theories, Comedy and Michael Collins
As well as being the front man of the Camembert Quartet (Late Late Show house band), Paddy Cullivan is an ‘historical entertainer’. What is that, you might ask? Well, he cleverly brings together all of the things he loves - history, music, comedy and the visual arts – and combines them into stage shows where he takes big historical stories and makes them accessible and entertaining, while also challenging the ‘accepted narratives’ of these pieces of history. His latest show focuses on the murder of Michael Collins at Beal na Blath – if you’re an Irish history buff you’re going to love (or hate!) hearing all about that, but we also get deep into other fascinating areas like conspiracy theories, 9/11, JFK’s assassination, and why, as someone who knows so much about history, he is a deeply cynical about how the Ukraine War is being handled politically. Its deep stuff, but as ever on this podcast, full of great craic.Tickets and information here https://www.paddycullivan.com/COMEDYWe’re just over one year into The Mario Rosenstock podcast now and every week we have brought you a brand new and exclusive comedy sketch. So we thought it was a nice time to go back over some of our very first comedy sketches and pick one our favourites to play you again. The one we have picked for you this week was inspired by a twitter moment that became very famous during one of the last lockdowns. Do you remember when Tony Holohan was out and about in Dublin city in his car one sunny evening and he got an awful shock when he saw large crowds gathering, having what he described as ‘a major open air party’? He was shocked and appalled what he witnessed and he sent out a very angry tweet to that effect. BONUS: Inside the mind of McIlroy
In January I sat down with Shane O’Donoghue, host of CNN’s Living Golf. You can check out the full episode by scrolling back a few episodes. But at one point of the conversation we got deep about Rory McIlroy, someone that Shane knows very well. We talked about the way his mind works, how he has dealt with some of the low points of his career, and if he’s in line to win The Masters this month. Constantin Gurdgiev – from Russia to Ireland, to the USA
My special guest is a man you will probably have seen and heard many times on Ireland’s biggest TV and radio shows – but not for a few years now. Constantin Gurdgiev was one of a group of what you might call ‘celebrity economists’ who became the new rock n roll stars during the recession – Constantin is Russian, very slick, very intelligent and I used to portray him as a kind of bond villain on Today FM’s Gift Grub and on Vincent Browne’s show on TV3.Constantin has been living in the US for the last few years and I wanted to catch up with him to hear what its like being Russian in the US right now with all that’s going on, what life is like for his friends and family back in Russia and what impact these sanctions we hear so much about are really having on day to day life there, and of course his insights into Putin and the Russian psyche. Constantin is also fascinating when he explains why he stopped being a guest on ‘traditional‘ media platforms like radio and TV and now only does longer form content like podcasts and deep dive print articles.COMEDY:It was the big talking point of the week, Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars, and that was the inspiration for this episode’s brand new and exclusive comedy sketch, guest starring Al Foran. Recently financial advisor Eddie Hobbs and I had a fascinating conversation - it was also a long one, so we held a bit back, and in this episode you’ll hear the rest of it. Eddie opens up about his involvement with the short-lived political party Renua and he reveals some real ‘behind the scenes’ stories about that escapade. Eddie is also very direct about his views on Sinn Fein and why he is utterly opposed to that party’s economic policies; he talks abou Ireland’s housing crisis, and we talk about Ireland’s controversial lockdown policy and why he is NOT an conspiracy theorist, as some people might like to believe.https://www.instagram.com/mariorosenstockofficial/https://twitter.com/giftgrubmariomariorosenstock@gmail.comSend a whatsappp message or voicenote to the hotline on 087 2685459The Mario Rosenstock Podcast is produced by Patrick Haughey of AudioBrand Hosted on Acast. John ‘Jumbo’ Kierans – Ireland’s King of the Tabloids
John ‘Jumbo’ Kierans is a legend of the print world, specifically the ‘red tops’, the tabloids. You might associate tabloid newspapers with scandals, sex, showbiz, celebrity exposes, paparazzi chasing stars down the street and all that – and you’d be 100% correct! Jumbo, with vast experience as a journalist and editor in this industry, reveals exactly how it all works, the good, the bad, and the ugly. He also tells me fascinating stories about being the first journalist to enter Kuwait after its liberation, chasing Julia Roberts around Ireland, drinking with Boris Johnson, and a whole lot more. Also..Happy Birthday to Us!!!! We launched this show on Paddys Day 2021, I was on the Late Late Show with Ryan Tubridy that night talking about the launch of the show and we shot to number one in the charts immediately. Hearing out Eddie Hobbs
There was a time, not so long ago, when Eddie Hobbs was everywhere - on every radio show and in every newspaper, presenting his own hugely popular TV shows, and a few best-selling books too. He was even a regular character on Today FM’s Gift Grub! But, for various reasons that we talk about in this interview, Eddie started to spend less time in the media and more time running his own business and also writing and tweeting about some of the big economic and political issues facing us. And yes, we also talk about some of the well-publicised business failures that Eddie has been involved in over the last few years. This is an interview that packs a lot of punch. I enjoyed this conversation so much, that, when we finally wrapped up, I realised that we had been talking for over an hour and a half! So what we’re going to do is play you the first part of the chat in this episode – this is quite a personal part and we go pretty deep into what Eddie has been up to for the last few years and his personal ups and downs during that time. And then a little later we’ll release the second part, covering Eddie's time with the political party Renua, why he is not a fan of Sinn Fein’s economic policies, and why he thinks there is a huge amount of investigation to be done in relation to Ireland’s lockdown policy.Enjoy!Mariohttps://www.instagram.com/mariorosenstockofficial/https://twitter.com/giftgrubmariomariorosenstock@gmail.comSend a whatsappp message or voicenote to the hotline on 087 2685459The Mario Rosenstock Podcast is produced by Patrick Haughey of AudioBrand Hosted on Acast. BONUS: Eddie Hobbs gets personal about Putin
I recently sat down with financial advisor Eddie Hobbs for what turned out to be a truly fascinating interview – and you can hear that interview in full on the next episode. But during that conversation Eddie spent some time talking about Vladimir Putin, what is driving his invasion into Ukraine, the historical context, and what he believes its going to take to stop it. As it happens, Eddie knows Russia very well – his children are from Russia, and he has been there many times; and he is also an avid student of military history. So with all that, Eddie Hobbs has a unique and interesting take on this very concerning issue. So we’ve taken that part out and packaged it up in this short bonus episode. It starts with a ‘phone call’ from ‘George Hook’ and an interesting hot take from Eddie on cancel culture…Mario Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Mairead Ronan and I have known each other for years and when we met up in the studio we had so much to talk about - great behind-the-scenes stories of Today FM and the heyday of The Ray Darcy Show, what was really behind her decision to leave the station recently, the kind of messages that female broadcasters face on a daily basis from listeners, her huge plans for Faro, Mairead’s company, and loads more. Davy FitzGerald, Ray Darcy and Julian Benson also phone in for a chat. COMEDYOne of the big news stories of the week and most likely the weeks ahead is the possible scrapping of the requirement to wear face masks in shops and schools and on public transport. As ever, my podcast colleagues have their own unique takes on such matters, lets hear what Joanne McNally and Vogue Williams are saying about it on My Therapist Ghosted Me, and also economist David McWilliams’ hot take. Tackling Gerry Thornley
You’re probably seeing, reading and hearing a lot from Gerry Thornley right now, with the Six Nations in full flow. Gerry is one of the country’s most eminent rugby writers, he has ghost written books with Ronan O’Gara, Trevor Brennan and Johnny Sexton, and he has so many great stories to tell from his time covering rugby’s biggest games – and he shares loads of them in this great conversation. He also gets some very colourful calls from ROG, Rob Kearney, Fintan O’Toole, and Johnny Sexton. This episode also features a very important public health announcement ahead of Valentines Day. And in this week’s new and exclusive comedy sketch, now that Covid is over, what is Professor Luke O’Neill going to do with himself? He has become quite the celebrity during this pandemic. Well, we have got our hands on some recently leaked voicemails from Luke’s phone which might give us a clue as to his next steps..Enjoy!Mariohttps://www.instagram.com/mariorosenstockofficial/https://twitter.com/giftgrubmariomariorosenstock@gmail.comSend a whatsappp message or voicenote to the hotline on 087 2685459The Mario Rosenstock Podcast is produced by Patrick Haughey of AudioBrand Hosted on Acast. Two Norries / One Mario
Its time to pay a visit to the deep south…North Cork! James Leonard and Timmy Long are known as ‘The Two Norries’ (a Norrie is someone from the north side of Cork City) – and they are two of the most interesting people I’ve had on The Mario Rosenstock Podcast since the series began. They had a difficult upbringing which led to drug, alcohol and other addictions and they both spent time in prison. During their time inside and since their subsequent release they have turned their lives around, focused on education and helping others, and now present the hugely popular Two Norries podcast (The number 1 podcast in prisons around Ireland!!)This chat has everything – powerful stories, personal reflection, and serious craic too (don’t miss the bit where Roy Keane and Leo Varadkar phone in to chat with the lads..) – I think you’re really going to enjoy it. And they also have an upcoming live show tour called Changing the Conversation – all details here https://twonorries.com/live-shows/COMEDY - There has been so much talk about parties in Downing Street of late – champagne flowing at political get togethers in the midst of the harshest of lockdowns. The controversy must be taking up all of the time of the poor Downing St staff, so it got me to thinking how difficult it must be for normal punters to get through to government departments and get some answersEnjoy!Mariohttps://www.instagram.com/mariorosenstockofficial/https://twitter.com/giftgrubmariomariorosenstock@gmail.comSend a whatsappp message or voicenote to the hotline on 087 2685459The Mario Rosenstock Podcast is produced by Patrick Haughey of AudioBrand Hosted on Acast. Shane O'Donoghue talks Tiger, Trump, and Tubridy
If you’re a fan of golf, or sport in general, you may be very familiar with this week’s guest – he has been golf correspondent at the BBC and Fox sports, and he is currently the Host of CNN’s Living Golf. Shane O’Donoghue knows all the players, all the courses, and all the great behind the scenes stories from that fascinating world. Shane was also Ryan Tubridy’s right hand man when Tubs presented the 2fm breakfast show, The Full Irish, all those years ago and so he also has some great backstage stories about RTE and some of the many broadcasters he has worked with. And get this – Shane has had a few very interesting meetings with Donald Trump, he has even played a few rounds of gold with him! We hear about all of these and more in this chat. COMEDY:So whats in the name of all that’s holy is happening with Russia this week? Threatening war with the Ukraine? Performing military exercises off the coast of Ireland? The story is just getting bigger and bigger - and some of my fellow podcasters are starting to pay close attention…Enjoy!Mariohttps://www.instagram.com/mariorosenstockofficial/https://twitter.com/giftgrubmariomariorosenstock@gmail.comSend a whatsappp message or voicenote to the hotline on 087 2685459The Mario Rosenstock Podcast is produced by Patrick Haughey of AudioBrand Hosted on Acast. Charlie Bird in full flight
“ I walked in here this morning scared out of my wits that my voice wouldn’t hold up – it is amazing, it has held up, I told you, something strange is happening to me, so thank you”This is a very special episode of the Mario Rosenstock podcast – my guest is Charlie Bird, one of Ireland’s best known reporters, a very familiar face on our TV screens for many decades, and a familiar voice on radio too. But it was with great sadness that, last year, following a shock diagnosis of motor neuron disease, Charlie learned that he was losing that famous voice. The months since Charlies diagnosis have been an total rollercoaster for him – he admitted to Ryan Tubridy on the Late Late Show last December that he cried every day since learning of his condition, but then something incredible happened - the entire country came together in a swell of support, letters and emails and calls came flooding in, and, as he says in our chat, something very special has happened to him over the last few weeks and he has found peace. Charlie is now on a mission to turn this big negative into a positive – and in this chat we talk all about how he’s planning to do that, the love he has felt from all of us since his diagnosis, the highlights of his career in RTE, and lots more. Here’s all you need to know about how you can help https://www.climbwithcharlie.ie/COMEDY:The Jeremy Kyle Show is back on TV. Pat Egan - backstage with Bob Marley, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Lou Reed..
If you’re a regular listener you’ll know by now that I just love to hear great stories – we veer towards guests that have lived fascinating, perhaps unconventional lives, and have a knack for telling anecdotes about the interesting things that have happened to them over the years. So, when I came across a recently launched book, written by a man called Pat Egan (Backstage Pass - A Life in Show Business) , I got straight on the blower to him. Pat is one of Ireland’s most famous music promoters responsible for bringing some of the world’s biggest acts into Ireland for major gigs since the 1970s, including Bob Marley, Eric Clapton, Queen, Lou Reed, Billy Connolly, Julio Iglesias, and many more. And he’s got a story about every one of them – like being asked by a well-known criminal to give Bob Marley a bag of weed, carrying a fuzzball table up the stairs of the Shelbourne for Eric Clapton, driving a ‘female friend’ from Dublin airport to Lou Reed’s dressing room, at the stars request…Pat has seen it all, and he reveals all in this great conversation. COMEDYRecently, there has been an increasing need for actors to have the ‘lived experience’ of a role before being allowed to play it. For example, Helen Mirren has been criticised for playing the role of a Jewish person, because she herself is not Jewish. So where does that leave the profession? I jump forward a few years and bring you a scene from the future of acting…Enjoy!Mariohttps://www.instagram.com/mariorosenstockofficial/https://twitter.com/giftgrubmariomariorosenstock@gmail.comSend a whatsappp message or voicenote to the hotline on 087 2685459The Mario Rosenstock Podcast is produced by Patrick Haughey of AudioBrand Hosted on Acast. Marion McKeone – Trump rallies, warzones and stories from the road
Marion McKeone is in a league of her own when it comes to reporting the big stories from the States. Danger Here... It’s George Hamilton!
George Hamilton is one of Ireland’s best-known broadcasters and commentators, an unrivalled authority on all things sport, and great craic too. A voice that will be familiar to any sports fan, or indeed classical music fan (he has a very popular show on Lyric fm), George has so many brilliant stories collected over decades of rubbing shoulders with the greats of sport, and travelling to major international football tournaments and olympic games - and we hear some of his best ones in this conversationCOMEDY – In this week’s brand new comedy sketch, exclusive to fans of The Mario Rosenstock Podcast, its time to pay another visit to my fellow podcasters to see what they’ve been chatting about this week. Naturally it’s a festive theme – that annual debate over the Christmas dinner; what time should it be eaten at, should there be brussel sprouts on the plate etc, so much to thrash out on this one. Dave Fanning talks Beatles, Bono, and Bowie
Trigger warning: serious Beatles fan nerd-out conversation inside. I’ve been watching Peter Jackson’s new documentary about The Beatles (The Beatles: Get Back)of late (its brilliant) and I wanted to talk to another die-hard Beatles fan like myself about the show and the band - Dave Fanning was the man right at the top of my list. Dave was a member of The Beatles fanclub from the age of eight and his love for the band hasn’t waned since. We completed nerded out on the greatness of the Beatles, why they made such an impact on the world, and why they broke up. But as Dave is one of Ireland’s foremost authorities on music in general, I took the opportunity to get him to open up on loads more besides, like his friendship with Bono, his views on grown-men’s obsession with David Bowie, and what makes some bands rocket to fame while others, with as much talent, remain unknown. If you love music - and lets face it, who doesn’t love music? – I think you’re going to really enjoy this chat with Dave.COMEDY: Because Dave is one of Ireland’s best-known DJs and authorities on music, it is seen as a real badge of honour to be interviewed by him on his radio show. If you’re sitting in front of Dave Fanning talking about your music career, you know you’re in the big leagues. Matt Cooper on the other side of the mic
It has been scientifically proven that Matt Cooper is the busiest man in western Europe. One of Ireland’s foremost broadcasters, columnists, authors, TV presenters and lots more besides, how he fits it all in I will never know. And now he has even added rounds of golf to the long list of things he packs in to an average week (he’s got some good course recommendations in this interview btw). But thankfully Matt was able to carve a precious hour out of that relentless schedule to join me in the Mario Rosenstock podcast studio for a chat that I enjoyed every minute of, and I think you will too – we talk Roy Keane, Logan Roy, fox-news style broadcasters, Rush, Golf, and we even play some of Matt’s biggest on-air bloopers straight to him during the interview (he wasn’t expecting them). COMEDY:Christmas is the time to give gifts to the ones we love, and to put old rivalries to bed, letting bygones be bygones. So Currys, supporters of this podcast, have organised the big ‘Currys Kris Kindle’ to bring some well-known faces together safely online, where gifts are given and olive branches extended. Finding Fintan O’Toole – Part 2
It was the conversation that was just too good to call time on. When you’re talking to someone as informed and interesting as Fintan O’Toole, time has a tendency to slip away. And that’s exactly what happened when Fintan and I caught up a couple of weeks ago to talk about his new book ‘We don’t know ourselves’ and a lot more besides. We went deep on so many big topics but we also went very personal, talking about Fintan’s childhood stammer, how many of his childhood friends ended up on heroin and in very difficult situations, and also fascinating insights in to his creative process. All of that is in part 1 – this episode is part 2 of our chat, and Fintan in is fine form on subjects like Sinn Fein, patriotism, Boris Johnson, and his critics. This is another good one folks. COMEDY - The most bizarre news of the week has been the advice from Health Minister Stephen Donnelly that Christmas pantomimes should be allowed to go ahead as planned this year, but that children should not attend them. What?? Yes I was as shocked as you - the news has been spreading fast and some global leaders have also been giving their reaction. Finding Fintan O’Toole
How well do you know Fintan O’Toole? He is one of the most well-known, intelligent and, at-times, divisive, writers in Ireland. You may be very familiar with his columns in the Irish Times, his books, and his many appearances on radio and TV shows – but what do you know about the man himself? Fintan has so much to say about so many of the issues of our time, that we rarely hear him say anything at all about himself - WHY he writes the kind of articles he writes, why he holds the opinions he does, what he was like as a kid growing up in Crumlin, and so on. That is exactly the kind of territory we get into in this fascinating interview with Fintan on this episode, and I think you’re really going to see a side to this man that you may not be familiar with..His new book is called ‘We Don’t Know Ourselves’ – read more on Fintan’s Twitter FeedCOMEDY - a new toy store has opened up just in time for Christmas, and you might find their new range of toys quite interesting…WIN A 58” SAMSUNG SMART TVThanks to our friends at Currys, proud supporters of the Mario Rosenstock Podcast, we have a 58 inch Samsung Smart 4k Ultra HD TV to give to one lucky listener. Lise Hand: Ryan Giggs, Daniel Day Lewis, Veronica Guerin & Life in Leinster House
Ever wondered what really goes on behind the scenes in Leinster House? Are you curious about what politicians are like when the cameras aren’t on them, or when they’re out in the wild, away from the comfort of the Dail? Lise Hand spent many years as a parliamentary sketch writer where her job was to unearth the human side of politicians and the quirky, often bizarre side of politics. And in many ways that is what I do every day too, with Gift Grub on the Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show. Lise and I shared some great stories about politicians out of their comfort zones, and the really awkward moments when we met the TD or minister that we’d just lampooned! Lise also tells me great stories about hanging out in the Man United players’ lounge, organising for Daniel Day Lewis to be interrogated by real life detectives, and her close friendship with the late Veronica Guerin.EXCLUSIVE COMEDY: You might have heard Gift Grub on the Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show this week, and if you did, you’d know that Nigella Lawson is in town interviewing for the role of Michael D Higgins new personal chef. Well while she was here she took the opportunity to do a few radio and tv shows, including The 6 O' Clock Show on Virgin Media One – what did host Martin King make of it all…??Enjoy! Elaine Crowley meets Man Friday Mario
Botox, bum fillers, Operation Transformation, what men and women are REALLY thinking, aging gracefully and confidently…this episode has it all. She’s also really interested in people, which is why her long running tv show in Virgin Media One was such a success. The Elaine Show aired its final show recently, which naturally Elaine was very disappointed about. We chat about what it was all about and what it meant to her, and so many other things besides. Its not every day you meet a man who drove across America with actor Sean Penn, developed a cocaine addiction through his friendship with an LA dealer named Cuban Mike, auditioned top Hollywood actresses like Renee Zellweger, and learned rebel songs directly from Christy Moore. Peter Sheridan has done it all, and has lived to tell the tales on this episode of The Mario Rosenstock Podcast. You are in for a real treat with this one folks. Terry Alderton - a seriously funny man
Terry Alderton’s stand-up is unlike any I’ve seen before – one minute he’s doing ‘straight’ stand-up, the next, multiple characters (all performed by him) are all talking and fighting with each other, then he might just stop the show and take an imaginary phone call. The audience never knows what Terry is going to do next, and as Terry admits to me in our conversation, neither does he! Not only do we chat about comedy and his love of performing for Irish audiences, he also shares great stories about boxer Nigel Benn (he once threatened to ‘break’ Terry), Ronnie Whelan (Terry played for him while a goalie in Southend Utd, Mick McCarthy (who told Terry to F-off) and many others. We also get in to some really interesting personal stuff too. Terry will be performing at the 2021 Galway Comedy Festival from October 20th to 22nd – if you’re reading this on time, please do yourself a favour and go to see this man!! https://www.galwaycomedyfestival.ie/Enjoy! Nicola Tallant comes face to face with Mario 'The Impressionist' Rosenstock
When you’ve got Ireland’s top crime journalist on the podcast, you’ve got to be on your best behaviour. Not that I’ve done anything wrong or anything, the money was just resting in my account, but anyway… Nicola Tallant has been on my podcast hitlist (pun intended) for quite some time - not only has her crime coverage for the Sunday World has helped that paper become one of the most read Sunday newspapers in the country, but her two podcasts - Crime World and The Witness - are consistently riding high in the Apple podcast charts. Nicola really knows her stuff and she’s so good at what she does, I wanted to meet her and find out about some of the criminals she has met, what got her in to crime journalism, and what actually drives her to do such a dangerous job every day. In this week’s comedy sketch, nightclubs are going to be opening up again very soon, which is all very exciting. But be careful, maybe we shouldn’t be expecting the exact same experience as before, there could be some concerning changes.. Enjoy! Adventures with Manchan Magan
You may be familiar with Manchan Magan from his many brilliant travel TV shows, his books about the beauty of the Irish language, and his columns about living simply and sustainably. But behind the public profile is a man who lives every day life in a way that is very different to how most of the rest of us live. He built his own house out of straw bales, he doesn’t own a TV, and he grows and rears most of what he eats – I really wanted to find out more about what drives him to live this way, what he loves about it, but also whats difficult about it too. Poor Manchan also faced some pretty tough calls from listeners this week – Michael O’leary, Conor McGregor, Gerry Adams, and Hector among them. Who's the man? Its John Spillane
There’s no one quite like John Spillane. Such a unique voice, a style of lyrics that you won’t find anywhere else (think Dunne’s Stores girl), and he’s got the personality to back it all up too. John is one of Ireland’s most interesting and loved singer songwriters, and in our chat we talk about all sorts of stuff – what inspires his songs, his love of Irish mythology, meeting one of his musical hero’s Brian Eno, and of course, his great love of Cork, boy! You know when you sit down with John Spillane that its not going to be the usual type of interview, and this one certainly doesn’t disappoint. COMEDY: The great Vincent Brown is back, and he’s angry – not because of all of the major scandals in Irish politics right now, but because of the lack of them!!FANCY WINNING A BRAND NEW LAPTOP?Thanks to our friends and supporters at Currys PC world, one lucky listener to The Mario Rosenstock Podcast will win a gorgeous HP Pavillion 2 in 1 laptop with a 14 inch touch screen, Intel Core i3 processor, 8.5 hours battery life and loads of other fancy bells and whistles. Karl Deeter: Trump ,Tourettes, and trying to buy a house
Karl Deeter is a very familiar face and voice on our TVs and radios – consistently invited on to shows because he's what you might call a ‘dream guest’: highly intelligent and eloquent, and, crucially, he is not afraid to hold and express an opinion that may be slightly unpopular or controversial. But our conversation on this episode is a very different one – yes, we touch on a couple of the big issues like the housing crisis and US politics, but mostly we get deep and personal, talking all about Karl’s Tourette’s syndrome and the impact that it has on his life, why he loves controversial comedians, and his frustration with arguments between the extreme left and right. Karl also gets some interesting phonecalls from people that want to chat with him, including George Hook, Matt Cooper and Miriam O’Callaghan!Exclusive comedy : it's all about going back to school this week, and my podcast colleagues are all talking about it. Check out what David McWilliams, Tommy & Hector, and Blindboy have to say about this very special time of year. Enjoy!MarioThe Mario Rosenstock Podcast is produced by Patrick Haughey, AudioBrand | www.audiobrand.ie Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Hello Hello Hello Tom Dunne!
Tom Dunne enjoyed great success as the front man of Something Happens. The band had a string of hit singles in the charts, including Parachute and hello hello hello, and they played to packed houses all over the world. But there came a point, as there does with many great bands, where they decided, for various reasons, to stop recording albums and touring the world. Since then, Tom has become a hugely popular broadcaster on Today FM and, more recently, Newstalk, and he’s also a dab hand at writing – he has so many stories to tell! In our chat on this episode, Tom tells me about the great times they had on the road touring with some music industry legends, he reveals the reason that they decided to call it quits as a band, gives me his thoughts on why some bands become really successful and others don’t, talks about his life in broadcasting and journalism in more recent years, and we share some lovely memories of the great Tony Fenton. COMEDY: As ever we have a brand new comedy sketch, exclusively for you as a loyal listener to The Mario Rosenstock Podcast. On this episode, we cross over to Russia where the government are very worried about something, and they think a well known organisation in Ireland might be able to help. Tadhg Hickey: “Mom, Dad, I like Gerry Adams”
Tadhg Hickey is a proud Cork man and a proud Sinn Fein supporter – so, naturally, the Mario Rosenstock Podcast hotline was flooded with messages of support from famous cork people and also one from one of Tadhg’s heroes, a certain Mr Gerry Adams. You can hear those messages at the very start of the episode. I’m a big fan of Tadhg Hickey – currently one of Ireland’s great comic minds, Tadhg was a regular guest on my radio show on Today Fm and every time he was on we had so much craic, there was always a great spark between us. And that same sense of fun and devilment was definitely there when we caught up in the studio recently for this chat. Tadhg was an original member of the Cahoots comedy troupe, he went on to write and star in a brilliant one man show (which I saw at the Dublin Fringe Festival) called In One Eye, Out the Other, about his upbringing and addiction to alcohol, and then during the last couple of years he has expertly adapted his comedy to online and his short videos are getting millions of hits. He is very interested in politics, both domestic and international, and that definitely shines through in his sketches. Here are three of his own personal favourites:Loyalism but it's a house share in Corkhttps://twitter.com/TadhgHickey/status/1364864367121022977?s=19Israel/Palestine but it's a house share in Corkhttps://twitter.com/TadhgHickey/status/1384053088915398656?s=19Working Class Characters by Middle Class Filmmakers https://twitter.com/TadhgHickey/status/1396728768325210113?s=19Tadhg and I talk comedy, politics (he’s a big SF supporter), drink and drugs and recovery, spirituality, and so much more. Tadhg also plays a starring role in this episode’s exclusive comedy sketch – RTE’s Brian O’Donovan meets RTE’s Brian O’Donovan!I hope you enjoy this one. John Gibbons: Apocalypse Now?
John Gibbons is one of Ireland's most vocal, passionate and well-known environmental campaigners. This is subject that I am totally fascinated by and when I need someone to explain something to me and to answer some of the many questions I have about the topic, John is person I go straight to – as a result, he was a regular guest on the Roast radio show and we thought that it was high time he joined me here on the podcast for an in-depth chat. But in our conversation we didn’t just get into some of the big environmental issues and threats we’re facing right now, I also want to get to know more about John the man, who he is and where he’s coming from, and what drives him to be such a consistent and passionate advocated for all things climate-related – and we really got into some fascinating areas..Comedy: Its all about the Premier League this week and of course my colleagues in the podcasting world are all talking about it – press play to hear Eamon Dunphy, Vogue and Joanne, and David McWilliams talk The Prem. Larissa Nolan: Lockdowns, Life and the Left
Winner of the Popular Journalist of the Year Award, Larissa Nolan is a brave, highly intelligent, at-times controversial, and incredibly hardworking writer. Not only does Larissa hold very strong opinions on big issues like cancel culture, the left-right divide, Ireland’s notorious covid lockdowns (all of which we discuss in this episode) and much more – but, crucially, her opinions are based on long and deep research into these issues, they are not just designed to create heat and get twitter talking. This is a conversation I really enjoyed, and think you will too. Also on this episode we introduce a new member of The Mario Rosenstock Podcast – a spoken word poet called Spoken Word Steve who speaks truth to power and addresses the big issues and injustices of our time with creativity and passion. His debut performance will hit you like a tonne of bricks. Mark O’Halloran: Cinema Success; Property Failure
Mark O’Halloran is a big deal in the Arts world. He wrote and starred in the award-winning film, Adam and Paul; he wrote Garage, the film starring Pat Shortt which debuted at the Cannes film festival; he wrote the hit TV series Prosperity, and he is currently writing the TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s ‘Conversations with Friends’. Mark has worked many times with the great film director Lenny Abrahamson, he is an acclaimed stage actor, and it is fair to say that in the arts and creative world, he would be called a huge success. BUT would you believe that for all of this hard work and achievement and success in one world, Mark is a total failure (by his own admission) in another world – the world of property ownership. Like so many others, Mark cannot get approved for a mortgage and is facing a lifetime of insecure renting. In our chat, Mark talks incredibly eloquently about this issue, his career, behind the scene stories from film sets, and so much more. Comedy: Speaking about the housing crisis, a certain famous Irish businessman has spotted an opportunity to come up with a solution for it, and to make a little bit of a profit at the same time… Drop me a line any time – mariorosenstock@gmail.com Produced by Patrick Haughey, Audiobrand | www.audiobrand.ie Hosted on Acast. Bressie and I go out of our Minds
Bressie hates mortgage adverts on TV. Having been approved for, and then denied, a mortgage, he knows how unrealistic they are. That a man so industrious and successful would find it really hard to secure a loan from the bank to buy a home says a lot about the state of things right now. So, Bressie shared his story about the mortgage, and we got in to areas that you might expect, like mindfulness and podcasting, but also some areas that you might not expect, like the psychology of colonialism, our shared love of dolly parton, and why I should get some therapy!!Comedy: The Olympics Is kicking off this week, everyone’s talking about it, including some of my friends and colleagues here in the podcast world. Jim Sheridan - Behind the Scenes
He once held a gun to Daniel Day Lewis’ head, spent time ‘f”*king up’ Richard Harris on the set of The Field, and he can’t understand why everyone was so afraid of Harvey Weinstein. Jim Sheridan is not only one of the greatest film directors every to come out of Ireland (six-time Oscar-nominated), he also one of the most compelling characters Ive ever met. In his latest project, Murder at the Cottage, Jim sets out to try to make sense of what really happened in the case of Sophie Toscan du Plantier who was murdered at her holiday cottage in Schull, West Cork in 1996. Jim tells me about the personal tragedy and anger at the Irish justice system that drove him to make this show, and he also shares incredible stories of working with some of the world’s best actors and producers. Comedy: Some well-known people get wind that a famous film director is on the episode and they leave some voicemails for him. Also, a sideways glance ai English Hooliganism, following the Euro 2021 final at Wembley. Ray D'Arcy: Den and Now
After lots of twiddling of knobs and flicking of faders, myself and Ray D'Arcy finally got chatting. But that little bit of technical checking that you will hear at the very start of this episode is a mark of the man in many ways. Ray D'Arcy is a perfectionist, he’s incredibly thorough and a true professional - and these traits, along with obviously being a great communicator and conversationalist, are all central to him becoming one of Ireland’s best known and most successful broadcasters. Ray D'Arcy doesn’t do many interviews at all so this is a very rare outing– as he says himself, he gets very self-conscious when he’s in the spotlight, but despite this, Ray opened up to me during this interview and we ended up chatting about loads of stuff that you may not have heard Ray talk about before. Comedy: You would be forgiven for thinking that apart from Covid-related news, the only other show in town at the moment is the English football team in the Euros. All the debate about supporting them, not supporting them, football coming home, and so on to infinity. But things really did get interesting during their semi final game with Denmark, when that penalty non-penalty was awarded, leading them to win the game, and all my podcast colleagues have been talking about it…As ever, please subscribe, follow, rate and review if you’re enjoying the podcast so far. Livin’ with Lucy Kennedy
Lucy Kennedy is in such high demand that my conversation with her was ‘gate-crashed’ by several well-known personalities including Enda Kenny, Leo Varadkar, Ivan Yates, David Norris, Christy Dignam, and Miriam O’Callaghan. And as you’d expect from what you might know of Lucy from her very popular TV Show, she was great fun, very open and honest, and just so chilled out, not only with those ‘callers’, but all the way through my chat with her. She has has some great goss about some of the people she has lived with for her TV show Livin' with Lucy, get in there and have a listen! And in brand new and exclusive comedy: The big news story this week has been the further delay to the reopening of indoor dining, leading to widespread disappointment among those of us who are dying to get back in for pints and meals inside our favourite restaurants and pubs. Doing Bangers & Yolks with Neven Maguire
Have you always wanted to hear Neven Maguire giving President Michael D Higgins a cookery lesson while listening to techno? Well your wait is finally over. Neven is one of Ireland’s top chefs - he’s also such a laugh, and an incredibly driven and hardworking businessman. We chat all about his ambition, love of cooking, tough times during The Troubles, and why he refused the offer to do Operation Transformation. He also gets a few callers into the show – Daniel O’Donnell, Miriam O’Callaghan and Dr Eva Orsmond all have some questions for him. And he gets filleted by Roy Keane. And as well as great interviews like the one you’re about to hear with Neven Maguire, you also get a brand new and exclusive comedy sketch every week here on the Mario Rosenstock Podcast. It’s Al Foran! And Joe Rogan, Robert de Niro, Mark Wahlberg, Kim Kardashian….
Al Foran not only does great impressions, he does great impressions of people that many other impressionists don’t do – lots of well-known American celebrities, black actors and comedians like Denzel Washington and Eddie Murphy (something that he has come in for perhaps unfair criticism for, and we talk about this in the interview), and he’s particularly good at doing boxers. You’ll hear Mike Tyson, Conor McGregor, and Tyson Furey making an appearance throughout the course of this episode – you’ll also hear stories about when Al met them all in person, and how they reacted to him. We also had some callers into the podcast - Health Minister Stephen Donnelly phones in to ask Joe Pesci for some advice about the HSE, Neven Maguire wanted to talk to Gordon Ramsey about kitchen advice, and Roy Keane phones in to chat with Rio Ferdinand about The Euros. EXCLUSIVE COMEDY: Have you seen some of the gambling adverts on our TVs at the moment? There’s no holding back in them – full on, in your face promotion of betting. 1 Mario + 2 Johnnies
When the 2 Johnnies decided to pay a visit to Dublin I made sure to nab them for a chat on the podcast. These lads are not only intelligent, entertaining, and hard working - with a chart-topping podcast, sell-out shows, and best-selling books to their name - they’re also very sharp businessmen. Spotify has been paying close attention to their ever-growing popularity and, just a couple of weeks ago, the tech giant came knocking and made the lads an offer they couldn’t refuse to make their podcast a Spotify exclusive. In our chat, they tell me all about that deal, but we also chat about loads of other stuff, like Irish men’s Tinder disasters, Tony Holohan’s wagging finger, and people getting offended at everything on social media. And in this week’s brand new and exclusive comedy sketch, it’s time to pay a visit to the men’s shed - a little hut in the back of George hooks garden where a few of the lads who’ve fallen out of favour with what they would call the ‘woke brigade’, hang out and shoot the breeze. And this week, they have a special caller/visitor… As ever I’d love to hear from you – mariorosenstock@gmail.com – or on Twitter and Facebook. Enjoy the episode, I certainly did! Talking Balls with Ken Doherty
This man is a master storyteller. Years of hanging out with the likes of Jimmy White, Alex Higgins, Ronnie O’Sullivan, and so many other ‘Gods of Snooker’ has given Ken a treasure trove of brilliant stories, jokes and great gossip. We have the pleasure of hearing:· The one about skipping a snooker championship opening to hang out with Jimmy White and The Rolling Stones in Asia (and getting fined for it)· The one about meeting the Man Utd team in their dressing room and being blanked by everyone except for a certain elusive Frenchman· The one about the biggest gaff he ever made in the commentary box The list goes on and on. Is David Quinn Right about the Left?
You may not always agree with David Quinn’s opinions, but they are always incredibly well thought-out and articulated, and held with deep conviction. You might also argue that voices like his are needed now more than ever as the world currently leans liberally, and contradictory opinions are always valuable no matter what the prevailing mood.If you are not familiar with David I think you will find this interview fascinating; if you are familiar with him, I think you might hear a side to David that perhaps you’re not familiar with. We talk about the right/left divide, divisions within both the right and left, Covid lockdowns, and cancelation culture – but we also chat about his love of Micky Flanagan, his desire to be Albert Einstein for a day, and how he feels about being on the receiving end of so much vitriol on social media, so often. What do Pippa O’Connor, Mary Lou McDonald, Maura Higgins, Roz Purcell, and Daithi O’Se have in common? PJ Gallagher on DIY, Pain, and Nightmare Corporate Standup Gigs
Bastard files, Bush Hammers, Hardies – these are just some of the tools that PJ Gallagher has never heard of. And as the presenter of RTE’s The Big DIY Challenge, this is more than a little ironic. But it’s not about the tools for PJ, it’s about the people. He loves chatting to people, and as it happens, PJ is one of the people I have always loved chatting to. Hilarious, unpredictable, painfully honest, there’s so much to this man. PJ and I talk about his love/hate relationship with stand-up comedy, being crap at school and sport before finally finding the thing he was good at and that made him feel alive, racing (and falling off) motorbikes, and lots more. Exclusive comedy: This week all the talk was about the revelation that Eoghan Harris, one of Ireland’s best known journalists, was behind a very active and very controversial fake twitter account. Eoghan has been getting a lot of voicemails since this story broke, somebody hack into those voicemails, and sent the recordings to The Mario Rosenstock Podcast. It’s Eamon Dunphy, Baby!
I am, and always have been, a great admirer of Eamon Dunphy. Never afraid to hold a firm, controversial position, but never afraid to change that opinion either. And often the second position is the polar opposite of the first one! In a world where people appear afraid to be seen to change their minds about things, this makes a refreshing change and is part of why Dunphy is so popularWe cover a lot of ground in this chat and, as you’d expect, Eamon has got some strong opinions about hot topics like football (the super league), media, fame, and politics. But we also see the other side of Eamon – his love of family and close friends, his excitement about his first post-Covid ‘date night’ with Jane, and how he reflects on some of the more controversial things he has said and done over the years. I enjoyed every minute of this conversation. Exclusive comedy: It’s Punchestown Racing week, and we cross live to the ‘Easing of Covid Restrictions’ Handicap Hurdle. Who’ll get over the line is anyone’s guess! Hope you enjoy the show,Mario Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Meet the Man behind the Memes @BigDirtyFry
It’s both fascinating and encouraging to see how talented people can shoot to fame almost overnight these days. I first met Michael Fry a couple of years ago as he was starting to make a name for himself, posting funny parodies and songs on his growing social media channels, under the handle @BigDirtyFry. Michael was working hard and his unique style of comedy was slowly gaining traction. And then, suddenly, the rocket took off. Over the last year our phones have been constantly alight with funny videos, badly needed to lift the mood. Many of those videos have been Michael’s. His social following exploded, his sketches started getting millions of hits, and his fanbase now includes comedy legends like Dawn French and Dara O’Briain. In this episode of The Mario Rosenstock Podcast, Michael Fry plays us some of his favourite and most iconic comedy sketches and characters, and talks about the inspiration behind them. He also talks about how to stay on the positive side of social media, and has advise for other aspiring internet comedians. Exclusive Comedy: It’s all about the Super league this week, and my podcast community colleagues each have their own unique take on the story. So click play to hear Blindboy, Nicola Tallant, and Eamon Dunphy talking about the latest development that a “super league” of podcasters are forming a cartel including The 2 Johnnies and Tommy and Hector. Comedy sketch reprise: "I've got the drugs"
The government has been through some high and lows recently: lows when yet more vaccine roll-out problems showed up, highs when the call about a huge, unexpected batch of vaccines for Ireland came through. Wouldn’t you just love to have been in the room when that call came in? Well, our microphones were… Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The Return of George Hook
It has been a while since George Hook and I last passed each other in the corridors of Marconi House. His departure as drivetime host at Newstalk Radio was a well-publicised and controversial one, and one that we discuss at length in this great conversation, as it brings up a lot of bigger, very current issues. However we talk about so much more, such as his marriage to ‘the lovely Ingrid’ which has never been happier, why he believes history will not be kind to Nphet, modern rubgy punditry, and how he would like to be remembered. This is a compelling and entertaining chat packed full of opinions and good humour, I think you’ll really like it. COMEDY: this was also the week of highs and lows for the government: lows when yet more vaccine roll-out problems showed up, highs when the call about a huge, unexpected batch of vaccines for Ireland came through. Wouldn’t you just love to have been in the room when that call came in? Well, our microphones were…Enjoy!Mario Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

A history of the world in (around) 3 minutes
I’ve been doing sketches almost every day for the last 22 years, and I’ve noticed something very interesting: history repeats itself over and over again. Usually in a a bad way. So, why can’t we humans ever learn from our mistakes? If you can spare a couple of minutes, click play and I’ll boil it all down for you in one quick sketch. Hosted on Acast. No Limbs, No Limits, and NO HOLDS BARRED
My guests on this episode do NOT hold back, and rightly so. Let’s face it, there’s a lot to get off our chests these days and what better way to help the nation vent than to get Joanne Riordan, podcaster and star of No Limbs No Limits, and broadcaster Suzanne Kane around a virtual table to sound off about some of the things we’re all talking about these days – like the Dail circus, movie awards on zoom, iPhone Memory videos from a time we could eat, drink and be merry, Claire Byrne Live’s crazy reconstructions, and so, so much more.Ive also got a whole new type of sketch for you, perhaps very different to what you’re used to. I had a lot of fun making it and I hope you have fun listening to it. After you’ve listened to the panel, feel free to get in touch with an email, tweet, facebook, message, even a voicenote would be brilliant! Conor Moore makes quite an Impression
On this episode we have 47 guests for you. Tiger Woods, Ian Poulter, Tommy Tiernan, Ger Loughnan, Conor McGregor, Michael D Higgins, and Miriam O’Callaghan to name just a few. Now isn’t that great value for 46 minutes of your time. Conor Moore really is one to watch. From doing impressions of Eamon Dunphy in school, to breaking America with his top-class impressions of the superstars of golf, this Mullingar-man’s story is a great one. I had a ball chatting to him, hearing him do his thing, discussing how we both approach the same voices in totally different ways, finding out how he learns a new character, and loads more. Also on this episode of The Mario Rosenstock Podcast, you get a brand spanking new comedy sketch that you won’t hear anywhere else. Ronan O’Gara answers my call
Midway through my interview with ROG there was a pitch invasion. But he also shared some touching stories about how he cried watching Rachel Blackmore’s post-win Cheltenham interview; his deep, unwavering love of Cork; and, most importantly, how he well I’m aging. Meet Ian Dempsey: My Work Wife of 22 years
Ian Dempsey has never been brave enough to get a massage – and for a very good reason. But more about that later. It didn’t take us long to decide who should be the very first guest on The Mario Rosenstock Podcast. Having shared a radio studio with this man for over 20 years, who better than Ian to send me off into this brave new world of podcasting, knapsack on my back, excitement and trepidation in my heart. You might have heard interviews with Ireland’s most-loved breakfast show presenter before, but you haven’t heard one quite like this. Ian reveals things about himself that even I didn’t know – like why he would never, ever get a massage; his desire to be able to drop an F-Bomb on the radio, his memories of the infamous Fr Joseph Marmion, and the real reason for his obsession with David Bowie. He even blew me away with his impressions of Paschal Donohoe, Joan Burton, Matt Cooper and many more! I’ll also be trying out some new comedy skeches in this podcast series – today, we cross live to Cheltenham for the ‘Fake Moral Outrage in Horseracing Hurdle’. I hope you enjoy episode one of this new venture – ‘hit me up on my socials’ and let me know what you think!Cheers!Mario Twitter: @GiftGrubMarioFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/mariorosenstockofficial/Insta: Working on it!!!Produced by: Patrick Haughey, AudioBrand.
