A Conversation About Racism in Canada With People That Have Dealt With Racism.

I apologize.I’m sorryThese are the words that have been in our language the last week. After Time Magazine revealed that Justin Trudeau wore blackface not once, not twice, but three times. It caused a reverb across the nation. For a while. This week, new things came up. Trump’s possible, or pending impeachment, Greta Thunberg. Scheer the insurance salesman. So, for some, this is on the back burner. Our guests today are not the experts the news will think of asking when things like this happen. They are people that we walk pass every day. They live here. They work here. They study here. And I think I would like to hear their perspective. One is a student in my Radio, Arts and Entertainment class. Her name is Ana Santos. She's 21, a singer and grew up here in Canada. She will talk about being the only black student in her school. The other is Arafat Abdi. He's a bartender at Boston Pizza. He is also a soccer coach. He's from Yemen. He will talk about some of the experiences he has had. The use of the "N" word around him. The assumptions of the things he does or does not do. As well as what he sees involving other cultures. Then, we get into the actual issue of Blackface and their perspective.WARNING: There is strong language used in this. Arafat is not on social media. But Ana is on Instagram. @anasantoss_. She has some music to check out.Follow me:@kevole @AorDThePodcast.Facebook: Kevin Olenick, Agree or Disagree:The Podcastkevinolenick.comSubscribe on ITunes or wherever you get your podcasts.

Agree or Disagree: The Podcast-Mock Draft Edition

It’s the night dreams of made of.This weekend, the next step in many kids and families dreams take the next step as they will be drafted in the NHL. I say the next step, because obviously not every one makes it. A first round, or even a first pick in the first round doesn’t guarantee superstardom. Look at the Edmonton Oilers. Yes, they drafted Connor McDavid. But they also drafted Nail Yakupov who signed today in Russia. According to liveabout. com TSN looked at draft picks from 2000 to 2009. Based on that analysis, TSN concluded that 80 percent of first-round picks become at least low-level NHL players, while 44 percent of those players selected in the second round make the NHL a career. Just 30 percent of third-round picks become NHL players, and the percentages continue to drop in the later roundsThere is no exact science, but clearly homework is needed. Seen, Tyler and I got through our mock draft process and pic the 1st Round for all 31 teams. There are no predictions of trades. We also talk about Alex Edler signing with the Canucks and Jesse Puljujärvi asking for a trade from the Edmonton OilersFollow Tyler: @tnobleFollow Sean @beardycanuck03Follow me: @kevole

Agree or Disagree:The Podcast-A Tribute to Owen Hart.

Friday Night’s in Calgary. Many would head to the Pavilion in Downtown Calgary. They would head to watch wrestling. Some f the greatest heals, before by the way, they were called heals, like Bad News Allen, Archie “The Stomper” Goldie, dynamite Kid, The Great Gama, and Makhan Singh would do battle against faces like Jim Neidhart, Davey Boy Smith, Brian Pillman, and the Harts. Keith, Bruce, Bret and a young man named Owen. The play by play voice was the late great Ed Whelan. He would grace our TV’s every Sat with terms like “Ring a ding dong dandy” and In the mean time and in between timeTheir talents would eventually lead them to what was then known as WWF. They would then grace our Saturday’s afternoon and then eventually our Monday nights. There was a sense of pride watching these stars that came from Calgary. A smile. That smile left on May 23, 1999.That was when Owen Hart, playing the role of The Blue Blazer in parody to his WCW rival, Sting. His harness disconnected and he fell to his death. It’s been 20 years since that day. Today we look back on the life of Owen Hart, the tragedy, and in a sense, where we are now. Agree or Disagree:The Podcast-The UCP's Campus Free Speech on Campus Policy

Free Speech. Some love it. They feels it has given them the said freedom to speak their mind. Because of where they live, in this case, Canada, there should be no limits.Others are very concerned. They feel that this idea opens up the opportunity for harm, irresponsibility and danger for many. Specifically, the LGBT community.Last week, new Alberta Premier Jason Kenney wants to follow his counter part in Ontario Doug Ford.Alberta universities and colleges to conform to free-speech guidelines. Some may like it, but others wonder if this is as advantage or optics towards right wing thinking groups. The post-secondary education section of the United Conservative Party platform says the government will require the province’s universities and colleges to “develop, post and comply with free speech policies that conform to the University of Chicago Statement on Principles of Free Expression.”Often called the “Chicago principles,” the statement is the result of a university committee assembled in 2014 to state the school’s commitment to freedom of expression. The short report says, “It is not the proper role of the university to attempt to shield individuals from ideas and opinions they find unwelcome, disagreeable, or even deeply offensive.”Is this a good thing? Is this a bad thing? Can this hurt or harm? Our guests today will help us unpack that.Labour lawyer Dwayne Chomyn, University Professor Jay Gamble, and Kristin Raworth, advocate for Sexual Violence survivors join me in discussing this new policy.Topics we cover include;-The pro's and con's of this.-Free Speech-Counter Protest's and the Heckler's Veto.-The power of intelligent discussion-Debating on Twitter-Do we actually need this policy?Follow Dwayne:@Citizen004Follow Jay: @DrJayDrNoFollow Kristin: @KristinRaworthFollow me: @kevoleFacebook: Kevin OlenickSubscribe: Agree or Disagree:The PodcastWebsite:kevinolenick.com

The Heartbreak of Valentine's Day.

It’s Valentine’s Day. A day where we celebrate, love and romance. Remember when you were a kid, and there was the time when you gave and got cards? Some of us may not have got that many cards, anyway that’s a different show. But there was some excitement in the air.Just like perhaps, when you met that “love”. It was exciting, the only thing that mattered. The air and life just seemed so much better. Bur, something happened. Maybe you noticed or maybe you didn’t, but slowly and surely, the romance died. Either you both decided to end it, or you just lived in a sense of complacency, that you ended it without ending it. Or, you still love each other and wonder where that spark is? Or, you lost someone due to sickness or worth. What happens when the romance of Valentine’s Day breaks your heart? Our guests today will navigate us through that. What is the status of the Conservative Movement in Canada?

Unpopular opinion (according to the people commenting on one of my earlier tweets): you can be an ally to LGBTQ2+ people, a supporter of truth & reconciliation, want to protect our environment, believe in science, want to protect human rights AND be a conservative. This Tweet caused an interesting conversation of the Christmas Holiday Break. It included these two.So you’re not a #CON? BS, that’s literally everything they’ve demonstrably stood against. CONs have demonized anyone standing up for LGBTQ, First Nations, environment, scientists or anyone pursuing higher ed, & those escaping the horrors brought to them by western nations. agree with that only depending on if the particular conservative party is doing those things that you value. What's more important - that a party have the title conservative in it or live out your conservativ values. Sometimes those things clash. As we head into 2019, we are going to see an interesting conversation on where the conservative movement is. With the Federal and an Alberta Election coming up this year. The questions on the motivations of Doug Ford, Jason Kenney, and Andrew Scheer will continue to be challenged. So where is the conservative movement heading into 2019? Where is the line between misconceptions and accurate perception?Joining us today to unpack that is Natasha Kornak.Natasha is working to redefine our current state of political discourse from one that is rooted in groupthink, identity politics, and personal attacks to one that is thoughtful, respectful, and honest. It’s her goal to enlighten young people about the importance of being engaged in political decisions and to think for themselves. She also seek to empower other women by working against sexual and gender-based violence in addition to encouraging more women to run for public office. What is a conservative? Why are you a conservative? The UCP and LGBTQ.-Pride Parade-John CarpayClimate Change, Environment, and Carbon TaxesThe Indigenous Community. The Trump Effect. The Challenges of this elections going for ward. Can you have fun with your finances?

Some may not think it, but finances can be fun.It can be stressful for everyone.I want to do travel too, but I can’t afford it.I want too buy that, but I can’t afford it.It is something you heard as a kid from your parents. He is also known for terrorizing the mutual fund industry with his annual “Lump of Coal Awards,” bestowed on entities in the mutual fund world for action, conduct, performance or attitude that is “bumbling, offensive, disingenuous, reprehensible or just plain stupid.”Determined to be more than just another insurance salesman, Tammy founded The Financial Guides. She set about working with clients in a totally different fashion.  Feeling that everyone needs a sound financial education she created her first class“Financial Journeys”. The goal was to provide the accurate, unbiased, basic information in simple English that we all require, but can’t easily find. Knowing that the best way to learn is by having fun and being comfortable, Tammy takes good care of her guests with excellent food and lots of laughter. Further expanding her educational and value added offerings Tammy created “Sandwich Safaris”, “Business Builder Nights”, and “Small Business Class”.Topics we cover;Personal Journey’s.What was your mindset around money as a kid? The Christian Church, #MeToo and #ChurchToo

This is the 4th episode we have talked aboutMeTooYou may have noticed that I start any MeToo with Alexis story. The reason is this and many other stories. There has been another movement that has come up. It’s called church too.According to many users, the origin of #ChurchToo was traced to two women.Writer Hannah Paasch and spoken word poet. The date was around the end of November. It has been in response to the issue inside the church. That for some, there has been a shroud of secrecy, silence, and abuse of biblical power on this. For others, many leaders like Franklin Graham, Denny Burk , and even newer voice Allie Beth Stuckey has said.It has opened the door to some questions and anger. But it has also led to a shrug for many. Why? Because they have expected this. They don’t expect anything different. But, you know what there are leaders trying to navigate through this. Three of them our guests today.Rev. Kayko Driedger Hesslein, PhD.is a pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada with a Jewish American husband. Men and Mental Health with Brian Pincott.

My dad came from a generation where no one talked about mental illness or suicide. Men in particular showed no vulnerability or signs of struggle, psychological or physical. To show any emotion was to appear weak, and real men were not weak.I never saw my father cry. I don't remember any physical signs of love from him, like hugs and kisses.Reverend Robert Cooke lost his 75-year-old father to suicide last yea"I have suffered from depression since I was 16 or 17. I have never talked about it. The State of Public Schools and Sex Ed in Canada.

Yesterday was Back to School. Although technically niot, it is The end of Summer and considered the start of Fall. New year. New ideas. And Back to school.Looking back on the summer, there were many controversies. Including one in Ontario. Where the new Ontario Government announced they would take the sex curriculum back to…..A search engine named Google was founded.Bill Clinton denies he had "sexual relations" with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Crimp hairs and Jelly Shoes were the fashion. The 4 biggest movies were Armaggedon, Saving Private Ryan, Godzilla, and There’s Something About Mary.Yes the Canadian Hit One Week from the Barenaked Ladies came out.Now just like none of these are relevant, many are concerned about taking a sex curriculum back to 1998 seems short sighted. Including some current kids now. Here are some kids the Globe and Mail talked too.(CUE)Of course, Ontario Teachers have also expressed their concern. The Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario is taking the Ford Government to court saying it is infringing on the rights of teachers and students.ETFO President Sam Hammond. “Yes it seems homophobic in a way, yes it’s trying to eliminate key aspects of the society we live in: gender identities, trans gender individuals, same sex marriage. But what about the state of sex ed. Agree or Disagree:The podcast-Reflections of Humboldt

Welcome to a special Agree or Disagree:Facebook Live Event as we reflect on the outpouring of emotion Hockey. It’s a part of the identity of Canada. We all dream of playing. We all watch. Some of the best Canadian memories and moments are on the ice.Rain, snow, or shine, families would wake up at 5:00 AM to take their kid or kids to the rink. They will stay up late. There are many of nights that there would be games on the street or on ice and we would just…play. Then some would be good enough to advance to another level. And that dream of one day playing in the NHL would continue. For players. For broadcasters. For coaches. They would travel on busses down the highways and roads of this country. Pursuing the passion that they loved. It brought smiles to faces, bonds of friendship, and lessons learned. And now, that just seems…different. This weekend was a weekend of sorrow, sadness and grief. The Humboldt Broncos were on their way to a playoff game against the Nipawin Hawks. A crash killed 15 and injured 14 others.,It’s hard to say. It was hard to write. The outpouring of grief was felt across Canada and the world. You heard just a piece of that from Connor McDavid, Glen Gulutzan, Mike Babcock and Sheldon Kennedy. There was more. Much more.Where we go from here? How do we support the victims, some obvious, others connected in many different ways. Joining me is Adele Desjardins-Lepine. BIOAdele Desjardins is strongly connected to her roots. She is a proud coal miners daughter raised by her dad at 10 months of age with the support of her aunts, uncles, grandparents and her community. She has faced many adversities in her life. Agree or Disagree: The Podcast-Thoughts and Prayers with Brad Jersak.

Thoughts and Prayers. It is a term we have heard countless times. You may have heard as you are sharing some deep struggles. You have heard them as you reach for the stars or your goals. You have heard them when another shooting, like the one last week, happens in the States.“Thoughts and Prayers”.It has also led to many responses like this.“Thoughts and Prayers”.These conversations are the same conversations we have had over and over again. Not only the conversation about guns. But the conversation around prayer.Since the shooting in Parkland, Florida happened a little over a week ago,I’ve felt compelled to dig a little deeper. Not that the conversation is bad, it’s important. But there are things I feel we can go deeper into.I think there is a difficult minefield to go over. There are some questions that have to be asked. Maybe we like the answer. Maybe we don’t. So I’m starting a series of deeper conversations on the themes and outcomes of these discussions. And one of them is prayer. What is itWhat it’s not?Does it work? And when we say work, what do we mean? Our guest today is Brad Jersak. Our guest today is Brad Jersak.Brad Jersak is an author and teacher based in Abbotsford, BC, where he serves as ordained reader and monastery preacher at All Saints of North America Monastery. He also occasionally teaches at Fresh Wind Christian Fellowship. Through his books and seminars, Brad shares the good news that God is Love, perfectly revealed in Jesus Christ. He teaches others how to encounter God through the practice of ”listening prayer,” through which God’s love heals wounded hearts and empowers us to heal this broken world.Brad Jersak’s foundational book, Can You Hear Me? Tuning in to the God who speaks trains readers in the ways of “Listening Prayer.” This book provides biblical teaching and 33 practical exercises for discerning God’s voice. He has a new Book A more Christlike God.Now, before we go on here. I want to make something clear. I understand that many of you are not comfortable with the idea of prayer. I respect that. I thank you for that. Agree or Disagree: The Podcast-#MeToo- Part 2.5-Online Dating.

Online Dating.Have you tried it? Perhaps you are one of many who have met your significant other online. Whether t’s EHarmony, Match, or another one.Or, you have had some negative experiences. Especially if you are women..Blogger Jon Millward created 10 fake OKCupid profiles with similar sounding usernames, with the same written profile, personal stats, level of education, etc. The only difference? Each account had a different photo of a man or woman of varying attractiveness.• The women as a group received over 20 times more messages than the men.• The two most attractive women received 83% of all messages.• The two most attractive women probably would have received several thousand more if their inboxes hadn’t have reached maximum capacity.• It took 2 months, 13 days for the most popular woman’s inbox to fill up. At the current rate it would take the most popular man 2.3 years to fill up his.But it’s not just the messages. It’s the content in these messages. Not just the words. It’s the pictures. We are currently going through a series on the #MeToo conversation. And if we are doing this topic justice, which is the intent, we need to talk about this. The online harassment of women. To help us discuss this we have Casey Logan. From her Twitter; Dating Columnist for the Calgary Sun, printed nationally on occasion. Perpetual optimist, perpetually single. Sarcasm really needs a font. Opinions are mine.Topics we cover include;-Reactions to MeToo.-Can Online Dating dating sites put a stop to these messages?-No means No.-Pick Up Culture.- Dating Profiles.-Casual encounters and safety.-How we as a public approach online sexual harassment.-The difference between quality dating columns and clickbait.Follow CaseyFacebook: Kevin OlenickTwitter:@kevoleSoundcloud: @kevoleSpreaker:@kevoleYou Tube:Kevin Olenick

Agree or Disagree: The Podcast: Are You Listening? Film.

Suicide. Mental Health. It’s not a comfortable topic. It’s not an easy topic. So if you hit stop, I respect that. But’s it’s something we do need to talk about. We are talking about it more.Programs like Bell Let’s Talk and series like 13 Reasons Why and other social media campaigns have made it a more open topic. But there is more we can do.According to an article posted to the Centre for Suicide Prevention, the numbers in Alberta specifically, and although down, are above the the national average. And with current economic factors not in Alberta, but many places around Canada, this is obviously a major concern. My guest today is Wanda Reinholdt. She is the writer and the director of a short film called Are You Listening?.Inspired by the Smiles Thru Lindsey Foundation & The Empathy Program, community leaders and young people create conversation, listen and look for solutions to mental illness in youth.Topics cover include; The premise. How did you as a cast and crew deal with this topic? The positive’s and the negative’s of Social Media.Societal’s view on mental health and addiction. The stigma of sllence and the jokes around the topic.Parents and kids conversation. The presumption that the strong can’t be “weak”.Bullying. Are you a human? I want to interview you.

You are a very interesting person. And you have a story. We spend a lot of time arguing, debating and let's be honest, belittling others on Social Media. But what if it was a little different? What if we took the time to learn about each other in meaningful way?I want to know that story. So, I want to interview you.I want to interview "normal people". Not just the celebrity, the real, everyday person. The person that has triumphed over trial, overcome obstacles, and has inspired. If you know someone, let me know their story. Agree or Disagree: The Podcast- A Backpack Full of Cash

One of the hot topics in my former home province of Alberta s the topic around taxpayer money and school choice. There has been a suggestion that it’s time to bring together the Catholic and Public School into one. And that it’s time to remove the religion aspect out of this. However, some appreciate the choice and the options available for their kids.Enter the movie Backpack Full of Cash. And from the website Narrated by Matt Damon, this feature-length documentary explores the growing privatization of public schools and the resulting impact on America’s most vulnerable children. Filmed in Philadelphia, New Orleans, Nashville and other cities, it takes viewers through the tumultuous 2013-14 school year, exposing the world of education “reform” where public education – starved of resources- hangs in the balance. Our guest today is from supportourstudents.ca She is a Public Ed Advocate. Barb Silva. The next event is Thursday June 1 in Red Deer at the Welikoklad Centre Screening Room. For more information, go to https://www.supportourstudents.ca/home/Follow on Support our Students@SOSAlbertaFollow Barb@thatSilvaLiningFollow me@kevole@AorDThePodcastThank you for listening
