Also, is calling someone a bigot a “slur?” Is the free speech paradox a real problem? Norm and I went head to head. Join me tonight to weigh in.

Episode 69 - Twitter Bans For Deadnaming Trans Folks?
Today’s episode was tough and we have a lot to discuss. Is it transphobic to want to keep twitter’s powers to ban narrow? Is the trans community too vulnerable to prioritize speech issues? We’re we wrong to defend the Nazis right to March in Skokie? Should we care about whether our advocacy is alienating? If your alienated, is it evidence that you were never a real ally? Or is the truth somewhere in between?

North Carolina Senate candidate Matthew Hoh is enduring an all out attack from the Democratic Party to get him off the ballot. Why? Because he's running as a Green Party candidate. He got more than enough signatures, but the state wont certify them. And Hillary Clinton's lawyer is involved in a cold-calling campaign in which agents representing themselves as Green Party members are trying to get people to remove their names from the ballot petition. It's a mess, but Hoh-- a former Marine with big-time anti-interventionist credentials, isn't given up. On today’s Bad Faith, he was joined by 2016 Green Party candidate Dr. Jill Stein to discuss the barriers Greens face, and why they should have the full support of the left.

Episode 53 - Replacement Theory: A White Cultural Problem?
This week on Bad Faith podcast, I was joined by host of The Funky Academic, Irami Osei-Frimpong, to do a deep dive into Great Replacement Theory and the manifesto written by the Buffalo shooter. We acknowledged that on some level Tucker Carlson was right: Democrats have long been vocal about their hope that "the browning of America" will inure to their electoral benefit. But where is the line between observing geographic trends as disadvantageous, and seeing immigration as a form of genocide? Who is responsible for the liberal discourse getting so nonsensical that it is easily co-opted and flipped by conservatives? What are the parallels between America's preemptive military "invasions" and the mass murders conducted by those who see themselves as soldiers in a race war? And is Irami right that there is a serious "white culture" problem afoot?

Episode 43 - Electoralism, Shall We Give it a Chance?
This week, Briahna spoke to two progressive congressional candidates hoping to make a difference in Northern Virginia & Washington DC -- Ally Dalsimer & Rev. Wendy Hamilton respectively. Hamilton, formerly Andrew Yang's Director of Spiritual Outreach, is hoping to unseat Eleanor Holmes Norton, who has been DC's House Delegate since 1991. Ally Dalsimer, an environmental activist, is hoping to unseat Gerald Connolly, who has been occuping his seat in the 11th district since 2009. Briahna asked the candidates not only what it will take to win, but whether they've considered how to overcome disaffection for electoralism on the left, and why anyone should commit their hard earned dollars to a congressional campaign when so may elected progressives have been disappointing as of late. Also, Briahna asked how can the left hold their candidates accountable -- using as an example the tension between Jamaal Bowman and the DSA. On this week’s Bad Faith I spoke with Joe Cirincione, distinguished fellow at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft in Washington, D.C & former president of The Ploughshares Fund, a public grant-making foundation focused on nuclear nonproliferation and conflict resolution, about the cold hard facts of hot nuclear war. How is the security of "mutually assured destruction" being undermined by the manufacture of "mini" nukes? How does one morally justify the United States sending weapons to Ukraine? What is the litmus test for US intervention, and how is the ongoing brinkmanship between nuclear powers not a version of the classic Star Trek episode A Taste of Armageddon, in which citizens are killed via cold calculations in order to justify political concessions? How many deaths have to occur before inevitable concessions are made?

Epiosde 32 - The First Crypto War?
This week, I spoke to Tribune staff writer and author Grace Blakeley about the role cryptocurrencies are playing in the the Ukraine/Russia conflict. On one hand, it's being used to raise money for Ukrainians, and to provide liquidity for blameless Russian citizens who are being impacted sanctions. But it also provides an opportunity for the Russia to transact around sanctions and potentially receive support from allies, like China. I asked Grace what crypto is and how it works, before digging into bigger picture questions: Is it really possible that this conflict could mark the end of the dollar as a reserve currency? Does the rising influence of China create an incentive for the US to not come down so hard on crypto markets, given that it might want to take advantage of crypto backchannels once China is the global hegemon? Also, what is a reserve currency, why does it matter, and if finance is just which craft, why is it never used to solve any problems for the poor and working classes? Let’s debrief tonight.

Last night, I participated in a panel which interviewed several progressive candidates running for House seats across the country, including Daniel Lee from California. Episode 25: Are Jews White? Does it Matter?
This week on Bad Faith podcast, Briahna spoke to Thomas Chatterton Williams & Batya Ungar-Sargon in one of the few substantive conversations on the internet about why Whoopi's claim that Jews are white, and the Holocaust wasn't about race. What work is the word "race" doing here? Is it possible to recognize the particularized nature of anti-Semitism and the fact that Nazi's saw Jews as raced while also acknowledging that Jews are "raced" differently in a contemporary American context? Last time he was on Bad Faith, Thomas & Brie discussed whether "raced" groups like Black Americans should stop identifying as Black and stop subscribing to the "one drop rule" which was conceived as a way to keep Black people enslaved. Are contemporary Jewish interlocutors who argue that Jews aren't white doubling down on a Nazi classification system and doing "race craft" in a way that's comparable to Black Americans subscribing to the slave owners idea that a drop of Black blood makes you Black? Should we all stop? Or does erasing race create certain risks for historically racialized groups?
Let’s discuss.

Morgan Harper is hoping to add to the ranks of the small number of progressives in congress. If she doesn’t beat establishment Democrat Tim Ryan in the primary, she fears he’ll loose to Josh Mandel — a self-styled Trump Republican. Harper recently debated Mandel, revealing exactly how dangerous he is (he doesn’t believe there should be any separation between church and state), and also how good Harper is at focusing on the issues that matter to Ohioans. But progressives have been burned before by seemingly progressive congress members who don’t fight for us when the chips are down. Is it worth it to support Morgan’s run? Let’s discuss.

Episode 22: Cancel Rogan? Fire Whoopi? What’s Next?
On this week’s Bad Faith, I spoke to Taylor Lorenz, technology reporter for the New York Times, heterodox writer Freddie DeBoer, & Evan Greer, activist and musician with an album titled “Spotify is Surveillance,” about the liberal push to jettison Joe Rogan from Spotify. What are Rogan’s obligations here? How much should we expect hosts to be able to fact check guests in the moment? Is Rogan’s “misinformation” spreading any worse than what you get from the main stream media? Is fact checking always going to be an issue with independent media? Also, Whoopi Goldberg is in the hot seat after arguing that Nazi persecution of Jews wasn’t “about race.” She is facing a two week suspension from the View. EPISODE 20: COVID DATING: Do Men Even CARE About Politics?
This week, I followed up with the all female dating panel and spoke to a group of lefty men about how they approach romance in the time of Covid. Would you date someone supports (or doesn’t support) mask mandates? Would you be more likely to date a Kamala supporter or a Trump supporter? Where do you fall on the West Elm Caleb story? Is Ghosting unethical or humane? Let’s discuss it all.

Episode 19-Incumbents Beware
This week, I spoke to two people who have taken on some of the country’s worst Democrats: Paula Jean Swearengin ran against Joe Manchin in 2018, and Gregg Marcel Dixon is currently challenging Jim Clyburn. Why is it that so many of the worst politicians hail from some of the most underserved communities? And do their challengers ever stand a chance?

Episode 18 - SUPPRESSED?: Independent Media Throttled & Flint Abandoned by Dems
On this week’s Bad Faith, I spoke to Jordan Chariton about how the YouTube algorithm favors corporate news and throttles investigative reporting, breaking news out of Flint MI where Democratic prosecutor have dropped fraud charges against the elected officials and banks that precipitated the crisis, and what happened to TYT. Let’s continue the conversation and also get into Biden’s Wednesday speech, sex shaming the green M&M, and whatever else is on your mind.

Episode 16 - A 3rd Party Challenge to Biden 2024?
On the latest Bad Faith podcast (which you can catch free in its entirety on Bad Faith YouTube), I spoke to the legendary journalist Chris Hedges & socialist Seattle City Council members Kshama Sawant about how the left should plan for the anticipated primary of Biden in 2024. Should a progressive run within the Democratic Party? Or should they run on a 3rd party ballot? If so, which one? The Forward Party? MPP? Green? Should we welcome a slate of left candidates? Would that generate more appeal for third party debates and increase the media’s appetite to cover Biden’s challengers? Or should the left get behind someone fast? Let’s talk about this and the back and forth between Chris, Kshama and myself about what exactly the left should do at the ballot box. This should be a good one.

Episode 15 - Three Cheers for Class Traitors?
On this week’s Bad Faith Podcast, I spoke with University of California Irvine Professor Catherine Liu about whether the professional managerial class — eg the “PMC” or professional bourgeoisie are more trouble than they’re worth. Should the left try to recruit class traitors? Must we figure out how to communicate with them if only bc they dominate the media sphere (myself included)? Also, the left knows what it DOESNT want in terms of an immigration strategy, but what does it affirmatively want? It says it’s against “open borders”, but also insists that America not ignore its role in creating immigration crises through its imperialist projects and climate change. What does that look like when we decide who to keep our and who to let in? Catherine and I dipped our toes into very cancelable waters. What do you think?

On this week’s premium episode of Bad Faith, I spoke to Stephen Semler about all the Build Back Better BS that happened over the holidays. It was cathartic, but what’s next? Also, we can discuss the Kamala/Charlamage interview and anything else that’s gone down since I last recorded. See you soon!

Episode 10 - “How Right the Left Was”
This week’s premium episode of Bad Faith Podcast w/ Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žizek touched all the topics: Chomsky’s take on Biden, which I first asked him about a year ago today in the middle of the Force The Vote controversy, third party voting, vaccine mandates, student loan debt, and of course, Star Trek. As always, I’m here to take your questions about that episode or whatever else is on your mind. After all, it’s been a wild few days.
I’m home for the holidays and without my soundboard, but we’ll try to have fun anyway. See you soon.

Episode 9 - State of The Union: Manchin Kills BBB.
Manchin has deaded BBB as every progressive outside the institutional left media bubble predicted. Now what? How are you holding up? What’s the plan to resist student debt payments? How can we make ourselves heard in midterms? Can we still “push” the party left or is it time for a new one? Also, how about that Kamala/ Charlagne video?
Let’s discuss.

Episode 8 - Succession And The City
We went IN on the new Sex and The City show, And Just Like That, as well as the season finale of Succession on yesterday’s Bad Faith. The woke cringe on AJLT was worth a full hour, and that was before the #metoo allegations against Mr. Big dropped. Tonight we’ll get into it all, and take questions/thoughts about the Succession finale.
With friend of the pod Olayemi Olurin— aka the funniest woman alive. (Also, we did some student debt discourse).
I’m gonna be joined by fan favorite Olayemi Olurin and there might be an appearance by my SWOTI cohost and best friend Joe. I’m really looking forward to this one!

Episode 7 - Solving the “Whiteness” Problem
In what some are calling the most important conversation of the year, Professor Ian Haney Lopez breaks down where liberals go wrong on messaging. It’s not white supremacy we’re fighting against, he says. It’s “racism as a class weapon that is succeeding in driving racial conflict even among people who would absolutely and genuinely repudiate the idea that they are white supremacists.”

Episode 6 - Has Dr. Oz Hacked COVID Politics?
On Thursday’s free episode of Bad Faith, I spoke to Dr. Abdul El Sayed, former Michigan gubernatorial candidate & Bernie surrogate, & Dave Weigel, Washington Post reporter cover the left, about Dr. Oz’s run for Senate in Pennsylvania. Dr Oz isn’t anti vaccine, but he’s poised to exploit legitimate concerns about growing authoritarianism to boost his political ambitions. Has he figured out how to thread a needle that could lead conservatives to victory in midterms? How should the left respond now that “believe science” feels like an empty liberal slogan? Let’s listen to clips and discuss!

Episode 5 - Debunking That One College Debt Tweet
As always, we’ll take questions about the latest Bad Faith episode on the Mississippi abortion case before the Supreme Court. But also, I’ll be joined by student debt aficionado and debt lawyer Sparky Abraham— a Bad Faith and Current Affairs Alum. He’ll be breaking down his viral Twitter thread about why student debt cancellation is good— not an “elite” bail out as it was described by recent Bad Faith guest Batya Ungar-Sargon. This should be fun.

Episode 4 - Are The Beatles “Overrated”?
This week’s Bad Faith was supposed to be light hearted, but it ended up being one of the most controversial episodes yet. Leslie Lee III of Struggle Session podcast & Trevor Beaulieu of Champagne Sharks joined me to discuss the recent Beatles documentary, Get Back, and the visceral reaction to Leslie’s somewhat anodyne observation that “white people love the Beatles.” Trevor returns to discuss the backlash tonight, and the critics view with be represented by the one and only Freddie deBoer. This should be a good one!
If you haven’t seen or heard the episode, you can watch on YouTube or listen wherever you get your podcasts for free.
Also, I have a new soundboard which should make things fun 😁😁😁

Episode 2 - Is The Left Unwilling to Defend Themselves in Debate?
I’ve noticed a troubling phenomenon when booking guests: often, the more left party to a disagreement is unwilling to debate their ideas with the more Conservative party. The more Conservative party is usually willing to hash it out. As evidenced by my recent conversation with Andrew Sullivan, I think there’s lots to be gained by taking debates off line and engaging in good faith. Why don’t more folks agree? Today, I’m talking with Nathan J. Robinson, founder of Current Affairs magazine, about whether this is in fact a trend on the left, and why he’s always been so willing to take on anyone. Also, taking questions about the latest ep of Bad Faith on Kyle Rittenhouse.

Episode 1 - Should We Move Past Race?
Welcome to the first episode of The DeBRIEf! Lots of you had lots to say about last week’s Bad Faith episode with Thomas Chatterton Williams. If you haven’t yet, check out a free clip at Bad Faith YouTube or subscribe at patreon.com/badfaithpodcast to watch or listen to the full 90 min conversation and come back and let’s chat on Friday about all those thoughts! Some questions to get us started: Does individualism require race blindness or does race blindness preclude equality? Should we examine our racial dating preferences? Is it a problem if they perpetuate racial hierarchies of value or is love just love? Bertrand Cooper, Pascal Robert, and some other friends of Bad Faith will be joining in. I can’t wait.
