About
The aim of this weekly podcast is to make economics easy, uncomplicated and accessible. With the world at a political, technological and financial tipping point, economics has never been so important to all of us and yet, it’s made inaccessible and complicated by so many. I’ve always thought what is complicated is rarely important and what is important is rarely complicated. That will be our motto. Every week we are going to tease out some big economic or political issue facing us, not just here in Ireland but in Europe and further afield. Globalisation has brought us all together. We all face similar challenges whether you live in Dublin, London, Minnesota or Milan. If you would like to support the show, please consider becoming a patron at www.patreon.com/DavidMcWilliams

BiBi Netanyahu - The Most Important Politician in America

How is the Israeli tail is wagging the American dog? America's election is exactly one year from now and Joe Biden is in bed with Netanyahu, but his own party, the Democratic Party is deeply divided by his embrace of Israel. He has given Netanyahu his blessing, but he can't influence the outcome in Gaza. This emasculation, combined with the end of the 0% interest rate days where previous "stars" are falling to earth - WeWork goes bankrupt, NFTs blinds people and SBF gets convicted - and we have a perfect storm, economically and geo-politically, raging. All this before we talk about Donald Trump. 176 - Britain's coming Winter of Discontent

"A spectre is haunting Britain—the spectre of stagflation". It's not always the podcast paraphrases Karl Marx, but when it comes to ideology, there are few better examples of "the one size fits all" trap as Marxism or Brexit. Now the consequences of Brexit and the end of the pandemic are pushing the UK, one of the most inherently inflationary economy in the West, towards stagflation where growth slows at the same time as prices rise. In the week where the Brexit jihadis of the Tory Party gather, we have a gander across the water. Lots in here economics, politics, culture, nostalgia and the economics of panic! 152 - The NYtimes is wrong - Ireland is not a tax haven

Last week the New York Times took a swipe at Ireland by calling it a tax haven - which it most definitely is not. Using taxes is central to any nation's economic policy. A tax haven is understood to be a place where a company puts a brass plate up, has few if any employees and proceeds to wash money through this shell company. That is not what is happening in Ireland. We explore the transformation of the Irish society and the Irish economy, against the background of a small country fighting the limitation of size by embracing globalization and importing much needed capital over a thirty year period. 150 - Rich Man/Poor Man with Stephanie Kelton & Marla Dukharan

Up here, in what used to be called the "1st World", the pandemic has focused economists' minds on what can be done to change our thinking after Covid has passed. M.M.T. sets out new economic opportunities  available, for example, to the the US. But not all countries have the luxury of this approach built up over decades of wealth and stability. Countries in what is now termed the "Global South" do not have these possibilities. Yet they are the ones that need a break most. 146 - The Great Caste War

Elections all over the world are now power struggles between "castes", not so much classes, ideologies or even economics. We look at economic history as being one on going struggle between three castes, the priests, the warriors and the merchants. Each traditional caste has evolved from their historical origins, but they are essentially unchanged in the modern. Today's politics is still dominated by this fascinating three-way struggle, economics is also determined by the winners of this battle. From the Pharaoh, to the Red Branch Knights, the disappearance of Prussia, right up to Brexit and the next Irish election we trace this illuminating way at looking political, power and position. It explains why the relatively rich have swung to the Left, while the relatively poor have swung to the Right in the biggest political re-configuration of our age. 132 - Pulling up the drawbridge

The biggest barrier to progress is the contented class, driven by their C.A.V.E philosophy: Citizens Against Virtually Everything, they want things to slow down now that they have risen up. they object to almost everything, gumming up the planning process, driving up house costs and house prices. These Cavemen, consumed by the anti-social behavior of serial objecting, are lifting the ladder behind them it in an attempt to further their economic status at the expense of the next generation. We contrast this static, dysfunction with the thrusting dynamic of the tech sector which is creating the future in front of our eyes. 129 - No one is safe until everyone is safe

Yesterday was the worst day to day for new cases of COVID 19 globally since the pandemic started. WE may feel safer, but the world is a dangerous as ever. To combat it, and any future variants, we must respond as a united planet: the reality is we can only open if rich countries pay for the vaccines of poor countries. In 1918 after WW1 we had the League of Nations, in 1948, after WW2 the UN, World Bank, Marshall Plan and the WHO. Maybe this crisis will provide the catalyst for a global response, because vaccine nationalism isn't the answer. Planetary response to a planetary pandemic. Money is not the problem, vision is. 127 - By 2030 there will be more female millionaires in the world than men. Change is coming.

One of the most significant changes influencing our world is the feminization of the economy. It's been a long time coming, and the fruits of many battles- contraception, free and inclusive education, divorce, abortion. Finally, in the West, woman are catching up with men, in income and wealth. This trend will profoundly affect the society and the economy. Candice Bushnell, writer of Sex in the City, remarked that, "Women with money is a notion that our society is uncomfortable with". Well we'd better get used to it. All European countries have seen increases in far-right parties in the last decade. This political affiliation will not just disappear as most people hope it will. This week we look the far-right straight in the eyes and try to understand the underlying sentiments & motives behind the political affiliation. History has shown us the risk of letting it run free. Withe the help of Kevin Cunningham we don't just look at economics and social issue, but personality types & deep human characteristics, inherited from our hundreds of thousands of years as hunter gatherers which unwittingly dictate how we see the world. Also, on the week Stripe - run by two software engineers - invest big time in Ireland, we look at why countries that favour innovators over rent-seekers, grow faster. Engineers who innovate make things, create wealth, whereas prestigious occupations like bankers, lawyers, management consultants and stock-brokers just shuffle other people's money around. Ireland, like many economies is hostage to the rentiers, companies that sidle up to governments to get a licence to provide some product or service that the government used to provide. This is a licence to print money, because the rentier company has a monopoly to hoover up rent rather than make anything. They dominate the property market, utilities and have led to the infantilization of the public sector. At every stage prices rises because these are the opposite of competitive companies. Show me the money

Optics and execution are two profoundly different things. All over the world politicians talk and entrepreneurs walk. Small businesses have been promised help by people who have never taken a risk in their lives, who don't understand the game because they’ve never had skin in the game. The result is a mess, good firms will shut, their loans bought by vulture funds and the process of the financialization of our economy, governed by spreadsheet spivs will take one further big step forward. We care about this. As Brexit moves towards the endgame and the UK government’s new policy appears to centre on inflicting as much economic damage as possible on Ireland to change the “backstop”, we explore why the Brexiteers are so ignorant about Ireland, how come Ireland is now considerably richer than the UK, more globalized and more resilient. In short, when so-called “Global Britain” exports 1.5 times more to “little” Ireland than it does to China, you know the Brexiteers are living in an economic la la land! Why it’s time to move Dublin Port

Dublin Port is 600 acres of prime residential land, beside the sea, close to all transport links and it should be developed in a new city on the water. The rest of the world is moving their ports, even Cork is, yet in Dublin, the legacy of a time when ports had to be at the mouths of rivers because rivers were a country’s key transport links, dominates our urban thinking. It is time to move the port, reimagine the city, reconsider the gateway to the capital and reorientate our city to face the sea, Dublin’s best natural resource, rather than turning our backs to it.
