About
Welcome to The Cherry Picker: the horror movie podcast where we like to kill people... but not really. Hosted by Zack Cherry and Eddie. Each week we discuss a new horror film / franchise / or topic, and finish the episode off with The Cherry Picker, an interactive poll where we choose two characters from the preceding content who we believe were/are the most deserving of their horror movie deaths (whether they received one or not). You will then have the opportunity to vote.

Episode 96 | Session 9 (2001)

Episode 93 | The Faculty (1998)

🦐 Celebrating its 25th anniversary this week, The Faculty was another 90s teen horror flick in the same vein as Scream. This time with Kevin Williamson infusing his meta voice and high school archetypes into the alien sub genre. The film was directed by Robert Rodriguez and has developed a massive cult following over the years, borrowing a lot of tropes from other science fiction films. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of studio love for this movie, as it seems to have been forgotten and ignored by the people who made it. There's still no proper Blu-ray release with any sort of commentaries or production features. Luckily though, we're going to discuss it thoroughly in this episode, and there's a lot to say about it, both good and bad. We'll also nominate which characters we think were most deserving of death for The Cherry Picker, so make sure to stick around til the end of the episode.● ● ●▶️ Watch the Video Podcast☑️ Vote in the Cherry Picker● ● ●📷 Follow The Cherry Picker on Instagram🎶 Follow The Cherry Picker on TikTok🐦 Follow The Cherry Picker on Twitter● ● ●▶️ Check out Zack's Main YouTube Channel📷 Follow Zack on Instagram🐦 Follow Zack on Twitter● ● ●▶️ Check Out Eddie's Main YouTube Channel📷 Follow Eddie on Instagram● ● ●💲 Support on PatreonSupport the show

Episode 91 | Deep Red (1975)

🎹 Kicking off December with a Christmas movie... well sort of. There's a Christmas tree! That counts, right? Anyway, you can always find a good excuse to talk about Dario Argento, and this is the perfect opportunity to discuss one of his finest works, Deep Red (aka Profondo Rosso). This was not only the movie that made him an Italian household name, but it also transformed the Giallo subgenre, and went on to become a major influence for North American horror. James Wan being a great example. There is plenty to talk about here, from the rich cinematography, to the violent death scenes, and the delightfully captivating performance by Daria Nicolodi as Gianna Brezzi. As always, we'll also nominate which characters we think were most deserving of death for The Cherry Picker, so make sure to stick around til the end of the episode.● ● ●▶️ Watch the Video Podcast☑️ Vote in the Cherry Picker● ● ●📷 Follow The Cherry Picker on Instagram🎶 Follow The Cherry Picker on TikTok🐦 Follow The Cherry Picker on Twitter● ● ●▶️ Check out Zack's Main YouTube Channel📷 Follow Zack on Instagram🐦 Follow Zack on Twitter● ● ●▶️ Check Out Eddie's Main YouTube Channel📷 Follow Eddie on Instagram● ● ●💲 Support on PatreonSupport the show

Episode 90 | They Live (1988)

🕶 John Carpenter's They Live opened in theatres 35 years ago, and became a No. 1 hit at the box office after the director had a string of commercial failures throughout the 80s. Despite this, the movie fell off of the box office in the week following its release, and to this day does not really get much fan fare aside from people recognizing it for the iconic faces of it's clandestine, villainous aliens... and of course the five minute fight sequence between Roddy Piper and Keith David. In any event, we are excited to be revisiting it this week, so come on in and join us for another lively conversation, where we'll also nominate which characters we think were most deserving of death for The Cherry Picker. Episode 89 | House of Wax (2005)

🕯 Prey. Slay. Display. Dark Castle made a millennialized remake to House of Wax back in the 2000s, which was already a remake of Mystery at the Wax Museum (1933). Remake is a bit of a loose term here, however, as the movie is much more in the style of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise. That's not necessarily a bad thing though, and in this episode we are going to run through all the fun and entertaining ways that House of Wax both supersedes (and fails), while also comparing it to the other remakes of the time. We'll also nominate which characters we think were most deserving of death for The Cherry Picker. Episode 77 | Halloween H2O (1998)

⛸ "This summer, terror won't be taking a vacation" or so they say with Halloween H2O, which was oddly released at the beginning of August 1998, which marks this week as the film's 25th anniversary. Of course, we at The Cherry Picker like to celebrate Halloween 365 days of the year, so now is just as good a time as ever to revisit this nostalgic little darling. In this episode, we really deconstruct every aspect of Jamie Lee Curtis's initial triumphant return as Laurie Strode, where we talk about everything from the film's extremely flawed production, the 90s Scream influence, and why this is the arguably the best version of Laurie Strode. 🖕 Now that Halloween is out of the way, we need a new franchise to glom onto for the time being, and with a brand new Evil Dead movie scheduled for 2023, we are counting down the months until its release by revisiting all of the previous entries, this time chatting all about Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn... quite possibly the funniest horror movie ever made. Stick around as we talk about our first time ever seeing this, our admiration for Bruce Campbell and the Raimis, why we both feel this is a huge improvement over the original, and of course, we'll also choose which character we think was most deserving to die.● ● ●▶️ Watch the Video Podcast☑️ Vote in the Cherry Picker● ● ●📷 Follow The Cherry Picker on Instagram🐦 Follow The Cherry Picker on Twitter● ● ●▶️ Check out Zack's Main YouTube Channel📷 Follow Zack on Instagram🐦 Follow Zack on Twitter● ● ●▶️ Check Out Eddie's Main YouTube Channel📷 Follow Eddie on Instagram● ● ●💲 Support on PatreonSupport the show

Episode 43 | Child's Play (1988)

🧑🏻‍🦰 With Chucky now being extremely popular once again (thanks in no small part to creator Don Mancini), what better time than now to transport back to the humble beginnings of one of our favorite horror franchises. In this week's episode, we will discuss everything in the OG Child's Play movie, from the (in our opinions) Oscar worthy performances of Brad Dourif and Chris Sarandon, to the brilliant and groundbreaking animatronics by Kevin Yagher that made a horror icon who he is today. We'll also chat about Andy (Alex Vincent) as a final boy, and our own memories of the toys that we obsessed about back in the day. Episode 42 | House on Haunted Hill (1999)

⚰️ Revisiting the Dark Castle remakes of the late 90s / early 2000s, this week we are talking all about their first outing with the modern day update of William Castle's House on Haunted Hill, originally from 1959. In this episode... well, we basically just have a bitter feud over whether this movie is nostalgic fun or pure trash. We'll touch upon the movie's little details, from its inspired Art Deco style, to its gothic sounding pipe-organ score, as well as discuss the remake trend that this movie doesn't really get credit for kickstarting. Episode 41 | Hollow Man (2000)

🧬 While the Universal Classic Monsters are experiencing a renaissance of sorts lately, with Blumhouse's The Invisible Man in 2020, and a Wolfman re-imagining in the works, we thought we would rewind back 20 years to explore the previous reincarnation of the H.G. Wells story, with the sexually charged, big-budgeted blockbuster Hollow Man. So in this episode, we will take a deep dive into the Academy Award nominated (for it's CGI effects), yet critically panned popcorn flick, to reevaluate the public opinion to see if we can't find something to love about this hot mess of a movie, and as always, choose which character we think was most deserving to die. Episode 40 | Scream 4 (2011)

🚪 After an 11 year hiatus, and a seemingly sound conclusion to the original Scream trilogy, Scream 4 (or SCRE4M) quietly sauntered into theatres with little to no marketing. As a result, it received a remarkably underwhelming box office intake which seemed to pump the brakes on any onward momentum for immediate future sequels. No matter how you feel about Scream 4 though, it can be argued that even this franchise's low points, which are few and far between, are way above the cut of any of the other heavy hitting horror franchise (mostly due to Wes Craven's talents as a filmmaker). So in this episode, we dive into the fourquel to discuss what we liked, what we didn't like, what could have been done differently to make this a more successful movie, what makes this one stand out from the rest, and as always, we'll be choosing which character we think was most deserving to die.▶️ Watch the Video Podcast☑️ Vote in the Cherry Picker● ● ●📷 Follow The Cherry Picker on Instagram🐦 Follow The Cherry Picker on Twitter● ● ●▶️ Check out Zack's Main YouTube Channel📷 Follow Zack on Instagram🐦 Follow Zack on Twitter● ● ●▶️ Check Out Eddie's Main YouTube Channel📷 Follow Eddie on Instagram● ● ●💲 Support on PatreonSupport the show

Episode 37 | Candyman (1992)

🐝 Celebrating its 30th anniversary this week, we are very excited to finally talk about the original Candyman. In this episode, we will discuss the idea of urban legend folklore, and what drew the character of Helen Lyle to seek out the legend of Candyman. We'll also discuss our many interpretations of the story, and why Candyman is anything but another senseless slasher villain. We'll also touch upon Clive Barker's source material novella, The Forbidden, and briefly discuss the franchise in terms of the sequels, including last year's reboot. And as always, we'll be choosing which character we think was most deserving to die. Episode 35 | Halloween Kills (2021)

🚒 Continuing our three month coverage of the Blumhouse Halloween trilogy from director David Gordon Green, this episode will be dedicated to the extremely polarizing middle chapter, Halloween Kills. To change up the pace a little bit, we will be organizing this episode into two parts. Since we don't want to come off as being completely negative, the first half of the podcast will be highlighting all of the pros we have for the movie, which includes the set design, the Haddonfield world building, and the KILLS! The second half will deal with all of cons, including the story, the dialogue, and the questionable direction. As always though, we'll still be choosing which character we think was most deserving to die. This being a murder mystery slasher that is not as widely known to North American audiences, we will spend the first part of this episode discussing the plot from a non-spoiler perspective, including director Dario Argento's trademark style, the film's LGBTQ appeal, and how the meta nature of the story essentially makes this the Italian version of Scream, but with a very modern 80s vibe. If you've already seen the movie, we will delve into spoiler talk at 45 minutes, where we will discuss the diversity and inventiveness of the kills, how we perceive the "fill in the blanks" narrative and characterization, and as always, we'll choose which character we think was most deserving to die.▶️ Watch the Video Podcast☑️ Vote in the Cherry Picker📷 Follow The Cherry Picker on Instagram📷 Follow Zack on Instagram📷 Follow Eddie on Instagram▶️ Check out Zack's Main YouTube Channel▶️ Check Out Eddie's Main YouTube Channel🐦 Follow Zack on Twitter💲 Support on PatreonSupport the show

Episode 30 | Scream 3 (2000)

🎬 It's time for another Scream podcast, this time the infamously campy third instalment. In this episode we will discuss why Scream 3 deserves a lot more recognition than it receives, but also why it is still deeply flawed, and all of the changes that could have been done to make it better. This includes everything from the unremarkable opening scene featuring Cotton Weary, to the wasted potential of Sidney's deteriorating mental health from being isolated for so long. Mostly, we just have a really fun time revisiting the story and all of the characters, which felt like we could have gone on for another two hours. We will also talk about who almost got cast in the lead role, and how that would have dramatically changed the movie. We also question why this story seems to get remade over and over again with every generation, and mull over ideas for a sequel that would actually bring back the original actors (had Hedy lived to torment Alison for years to come), and of course, we'll also choose which character we think was most deserving to die.▶️ Watch the Video Podcast☑️ Vote in the Cherry Picker📷 Follow The Cherry Picker on Instagram📷 Follow Zack on Instagram📷 Follow Eddie on Instagram▶️ Check out Zack's Main YouTube Channel▶️ Check Out Eddie's Main YouTube Channel🐦 Follow Zack on Twitter💲 Support on PatreonSupport the show
