Always Read The Fine Print! feat. Dusty Kessler | MORNING ROAST | EP 115
We sat down with director, videographer, & photographer, Dusty Kessler to dive into the subject of contracts and NDA’s. Recently, Dusty has discovered some interesting sections in some of his recent paper work that would give up full rights to the images or video that he captures with some of his clients - leaving him without ownership of his work entirely. This can be super problematic and in this episode, we discuss the importance of awareness and how you can protect yourself in the future!

How Dave Malave went from being an intern to working for Beyonce | EP.87
YES! It's finally here. Dave is a key player behind the scenes with the BWNC movement. Dave's story is insane and truly is a testament to the power behind BWNC. Almost two years ago, I put out a request to have someone help me out as an intern with the BWNC Podcast. Dave applied amongst many but really really stuck out to me for many reasons. As we became friends over the phone building the BWNC brand, I came across an opportunity to hire an assistant to help me while I was working with Beyonce preparing for Coachella. I offered it to Dave and the rest is history. Tune in to hear Dave's story coming up and how he became the perfect candidate for the job as my assistant and how that grew to him becoming my second shooter on the Beyonce and Jay-Z world tour, OTR2. CREATE FOR YOURSELF | Morning Roast | EP. 76
In this week’s Morning Roast episode we dive into a topic raised in our private community by one of our BWNC members. The post said –“for any of you who feel like creating just to create won't help you succeed...just remember you NEVER know who will see your work once you share it, so just share it!” We thought this was so important. As a creator, you should always create for yourself FIRST and never hold yourself back because you’re not being paid, or for fear of lack of views or likes. You literally NEVER know who might see your work and it could open doors you never thought possible. The thing you create today for fun could be the thing that lands you the big gig tomorrow! So just create and always SHARE for the world to see.

How Shannon Griffin found success as a music video/documentary editor | EP. 44
Shannon is one of my lil sister in the industry! Shannon recently just took the lead editor position on my latest documentary I co-directed with Andrew Sandler (who you've heard here on the podcast before). She is a monster! Her editing skills are thru the roof, her ability to tell stories are dialed in... Shannon has the sauce and in this episode, she shares A LOT of it, with you. In this we talk about her run of internships that eventually lead to her career, her POV of being a woman working in the industry, and much much more.

How Thutmose music got over 25 MILLION+ plays in just a year and a half | EP. 42
Today, our special guest is rapper, singer, songwriter THUTMOSE. Thut has been having a hot streak for the past year and a half with his music after releasing a few songs online including a Kendrick Lamar Humble remix which went very viral on Facebook. Thut’s story is super insane. He moved to Brooklyn from Nigeria after experiencing the Lagos Armory Explosion - an accidental detonation of military high explosives at a storage facility killing over 1,000 people and causing chaos in the city. With safety being a main concern, his family moved to America, landing in Brooklyn where they became harassed by SWAT and immigration. Fast forward to now, he has released records with millions of plays, opened for Billy Ellish on her US tour, and is about to support make in toyo upcoming America/European tour. This story is incredible and holds a lot of value for creators of all kinds. I encourage you to write down THREE takeaways as you listen to this episode. Feel free to share them with me in the comments when you finish.

HOW ARIN RAY WENT FROM X-FACTOR, TO BEING HOMELESS, TO WORKING WITH A-LIST ARTISTS! | EP. 40
Today, our special guest is R&B Singer / songwriter / producer aka pretty much an all around artist, Arin Ray. Arin is a bubbling artist right now and I'm hyped that we were able to get him to hop on the show. Arin has had an interesting career which started at an early age. He was a contestant on the TV show X Factor, mentored by Brittany Spears. He was on that show for two seasons and after getting nixed early, so he moved to Los Angeles to chase his passions for music. As he grew in his craft, he also grew his network. This guy went from being homeless in LA on food stamps to writing songs for some of the biggest artist in the world such as Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj, Usher, Meek Mill, Usher, Jason Deurello, and the list goes on. More so now, he is focused on his solo artistry. He just released his debut album Platinum Fire and is halfway through his first headlining tour across the US. This is a very fire interview with lots of fuckin tips for creators of all kinds. Mad inspirational.

Why Jonny Boucher created suicide prevention non profit Hope For A Day. Empowered by music! | Ep 25
Today, for episode 25, we have a very humbled guest - the founder of Hope For The Day & Sip of Hope… Jonny Boucher. Hope for the Day is a non profit organization that achieves proactive suicide prevention through outreach and mental health education. Hope for the Day has been up and running for several years, affecting lives all over the world and it all starts with a conversation. I dive in deep with Jonnny to discuss why he started this non profit, how they are able to be successful by taking a non traditional approach at the way they run and operate Hope for the Day such as being the only non profit to give speeches at Warped Tour, I believe he said this will be their 5th year in a row on Warped Tour… and so much more.
Jonny is even about to launch Sip of Hope with his friends Dark Matter Coffee, which is a coffee shop located in Chicago and 100% of the proceeds support proactive suicide prevention and mental health education. Very fucking cool. As a person who has been directly affected by suicide, I support Jonny’s mission and am happy people like him exist. If you want to get involved in any way or need someone to talk to - search Hope for the Day and talk to Jonny and his team. They are doing some amazing shit.

Josh Olufemii Interview - Filmmaking, creating a successful youtube channel, tutorial king! | EP 23
Today we have my good friend and popular youtuber/creator, Josh Enobakhare aka Olufemii Tutorials on the podcast. Josh has a popular go to youtube channel that specializes in creating content for those who are interested in video production. Which makes a lot of sense because he literally quit being a full-time teacher in-order to pursue youtube full time. Teaching is in his blood and I fuck with that.
Josh’s channel has over 138K+ subscribers which he rightfully deserves as he puts in SO MUCH work when creating his videos. His website LuxuryLeaks.com has grown into a one stop shop for tools such as sound packs, light leaks, project files to download and learn from… Josh has it all. And I have to add that the sound pack is sick, he teamed up with an engineer and custom made 100 sounds that you can use in your videos for like $60. I use it in a lot of the videos I make - I promise it won't disappoint and this is also a way that Josh is able to sustain an income while he creates. If you are a fan of Josh and want to learn about how he got to where he is today, this podcast episode is for you. If you are a fan of video production, this podcast episode is for you, if you are a fan of quitting your job to pursue something new… Then keep listening homie.

Running a successful merch printing company with Andrew Doyle | Ep 18
Today’s episode is sick as fuck for me to share as this guest is one of my long long time friends, Andrew Doyle. Andrew and I grew up in together in Iowa and have both ended up out in Los Angeles with some success. Doyle co-owns a very successful printing company called Over Cast Printing based out of Long Beach. They print gear for companies and Artist like Playboy, Levi’s, Frank Ocean, Shawn White’s Air and Style festival, Kings Road Merchandise, YouTube Red, lot stock and barrel, Manchester Orchestra, Andrew McMahon... fucking everybody…. they print tour supply for bands world wide, shipping all through Japan, SE Asia, Australia, Europe, Canada and more. Doyle is no stranger to the arts either, he is currently in a band called Foreign Pain and has been in bands since early high school, he’s toured non stop all over the country and set a bar for our music scene early on in our lives. He ran a large music venue, he then ran a night club which almost cost him his life (stay tuned to hear that insane story). He became a successful booking agent, and even created a non profit toy drive that helps provide amazing Christmas’s to less fortunate families around southern california…. This dude has done it all.
Doyle is one of the most caring individuals that I know… He works his fucking ass off every day and said yes to every opportunity that has come his way. He’s seen rock bottom and has worked his way out time and time again… Like literally when he became co-owner of his printing shop… they literally had their entire office robbed and everything stolen…. You NEED to hear that story and stay tuned in because there are a fuck ton of valuable lessons in this episode for every bwnc member. Thank you doyle for doing this one for us!

The Perspective Collective interview - Illustrator, Podcaster, Accountability Coach, and more! | EP 15
Today we have an insane hand lettering, illustrator, graphic designer on the show. His name is Scotty Russel but on the internet, he goes by the name, Perspective Collective. Scotty has a fast-growing Instagram account where he is vomiting insanely creative post after post which has gathered him an army of almost 40,000 followers. His work has been featured all over the internet, he’s been flown all over the country to speak about his art, and his collabs are insane. For instance, he just did a coffee mug collab with a company where they sold 200 mugs in less than 30 minutes - then turned around and sold 400 mugs of a different rare design in under 20 minutes. They even had one mug that was printed wrong go up for auction to raise money for an animal shelter and it sold for fucking $900……. Dude is lit.
Scotty and I both met several years back when I was making music. He owned a clothing brand and we would collaborate on many projects and shows. His work is incredible but most of all, he is hungry to teach and give back. He has his Perspective Collective Podcast where he gives inspiration and talks with a ton of creatives, he shares very detailed blogs and behind the scenes on his creative process. He is a dude you should definitely get to know and I’m stoked to share his story with you today.

How Markus Frieske became the Head of Social Influence at EA Games | EP 14
On today’s episode I sit down with one of my longest friends and top dogs at the company EA Games aka Electronic Arts aka EA Sports, It’s in the game. Markus is the Head of Influence for EA and is overseeing projects for almost every single EA game that they have. Markus is also a youtuber, who has been killing the game and testing new types of ways to create for youtube. Now to take this back, Markus and I met while both working at a car wash back in Cedar Falls, Iowa when I was in High School. He was the first person who actually sparked my hip hop career with my group Skoold and is one of those dudes who has given me years and years of mentorship which I am forever thankful for. Fast Forward to now, Markus actually introduced me to EA Games and allowed me to Direct my first true large budget branded video for Madden with Lil Dicky, Rob Gronkowski, Antonio Brown, and Von Miller. We’ve worked on several projects since then and are finding new ways to create and push the bar.
In this podcast, we bounce all over the place to find out how Markus got this amazing position at EA. He shares some of the times he has hit rock bottom as a creator but was determined to find a way out. He started at a bottom level position at EA and managed to build great relationships, put in thousands of hours every year, and literally created his own position overseeing dozens of employees. Now, Markus works to share his knowledge in the gaming industry through his Podcast, “The Creator’s Toolkit”. He has an army on YouTube known as The Dots which follow his EmmDotFrisk channel that he created. Just from dedicating a few hours a week to the channel, he has gained over 11,000 subscribers in less than a year and over 1.6 million views on all of his videos. Make sure to stay tuned today if you’re looking some life lessons through markus’s story. I highly recommend not shutting this podcast the fuck off.

How Matt Genius went from intern the TDE Merch store manager & Kendrick Lamar pop up stores | EP 13
On today's episode we sit down with my dawg and TDE’s very own behind the scenes legend, Matt Genius. Matt runs the entire merch operation at Top Dawg Entertainment which if you are not familiar houses some of today’s hop artists such as Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, SZA, etc. etc. Matt has been working with them for years, perfecting the online shopping experience for fans, marketing options, and even tours with the artist. He just completed his largest job yet which was putting together a pop-up shop for Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN tour in the united states. They did pop up shops all over the country before a shit ton of shows and allowed fans to purchase rare merch. It was a huge success.
Matt is also a very talented artist, going under the name Matt Genius and just now began calling himself RIP MATT GENIUS which he explains the name in this episode. Matt and I met on the ScHoolboy Q Blank Face Tour and I was even on his podcast “Genius Frequencies” about a year ago if you want to check that out. Plan to hear some great stories like the time he toured with Kendrick and Kanye, and how every day he would leave his 9 to 5 to drive over an hour each way to the TDE house to intern. Matt is incredibly inspiring and very wise when it comes to music and marketing, you can plan to gain some good insight in this episode!

How Travis Lloyd was raised in foster care and now public speaks professionally to make a difference in the system! | EP 11
On today's episode, I am happy to bring my homie Travis Lloyd on to share his story. Travis is a mental health professional, public speaker, foster care expert, hip-hop artist, Author, and mentor. Travis grew up in and out of foster care, group homes, and was even institutionalized at one point. Growing up in and out of the system, he was often told that he would be dead or in jail before he was 18 and able to graduate High School. He had very little support to push and drive him to succeed in life, but - creatively, Travis created his own lane of success. Not only did Travis graduate high school, but he went on to graduate college with a bachelor in science.
Through a series of events, Travis has made it his personal goal to empower young people, the adults in their lives, and the professionals who work with them to reach their full potential. He now travels all over the world speaking and even sharing his poetry and raps that he wrote as a coping mechanism when he was going through the struggle. There is a lot to learn here in this conversation, Travis and I go back several years and before I moved to LA, I would fly all over the country with him to shoot and create content at these events. I’m proud of this dude and believe he has A LOT to offer. I hope you enjoy our conversation.

How Anthony Tripoli QUIT his lead photography job with Zappos and began working with rapper Oliver Francis | EP 10
On today’s episode, I sat down with an old friend of mine, Anthony Tripoli also known as Artripoli on Instagram. Tony, is known for his photography on many levels. He was a popular punk and hardcore photographer early on when living in Columbia, Missouri, he then took a chance and moved to Las Vegas where he became lead editorial photographer for Zappos, which is one of the largest online retail shops. Like they’re huge. They were bought Amazon for 1.2 billion dollars or some shit. That’s a big deal. After working and perfecting his craft there, he decided to walk away and move back to Columbia, MO where he began focusing on video and linked with rapper/singer/songwriter, Oliver Francis.
Tony and Oliver came over to my house before their LA show and both hopped on the BWNC podcast. If you don’t know who Oliver Francis is, listen to last weeks episode to hear bout his explosive career on youtube that now has every label knocking at his door. How Andrew Sandler got his documentary on NETFLIX and has had over 1 BILLION views on all his videos | EP 08
Today I have a very important guest on the show, Andrew Sandler. Andrew is one of the main reasons I have any success in Los Angeles and has been a dude I've literally been with day in and day out since I moved to LA, putting me on since I got here. Andrew is the director of our Chris Brown documentary that has played in theaters all over the world and is now playing on Netflix. He directed our Mary J. Blige documentary which debuted on VH1 nationwide. He has directed, produced, and edited a shit ton of music videos and commercials (over a billion views) for brands and artists like Chris Brown, G-Eazy, Ariana Grande, Mac Miller, Nicki Minaj, Kehlani, Jordan Sparks, 2 Chains, Usher, Rick Ross, Meek Mill, Lil Romeo, EA Sports, Audi, Ferragamo, Tiffany & Co, Amazon, and many more.
Andrew gave me my chance to co-edit the Chris Brown documentary about a week after I had moved to LA, which excelled my career and started a very unique partnership between the two of us. In this Podcast, Andrew talks about growing up as a childhood actor and his early interest in film, how he started his own production company in college, and how networking landed him his first big producing gig for Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj. All of this and more on the Black With No Cream Podcast.

How rapper Cal Scruby went from living on a farm to making songs with Chris Brown | EP 07
My seventh guest on the Black With No Cream Podcast is Cal Scruby which is actually really tight for me as he is my first musical guest. Cal is a rapper/songwriter originally from Columbus, Ohio and is now living in Los Angeles, California. His story is sick. He has had millions and millions of plays on all of his songs and videos including his biggest record to date, titled Ain’t Shit Change featuring Chris Brown (which I actually edited the music video and shot the drone footage swag). But nothing has come easy for Cal and he’s still working day and night to achieve his goals. In this interview, we talk about how Cal grew up on a farm listening to rap, how in college he decided to give up being an Engineering major to focusing on music, how he was able to get the state of Ohio to fuck with him on a big level, and he even shares a story about one of the lowest points in his life when he had considered giving up on rap, but by chance was given the golden ticket which took him from rapping for fun in Ohio to landing in a studio session in LA with Chris Brown and Drake like wtf? Life can change in the blink of the eye and Cal is a clear example of that. I’m proud of Cal. We both moved to LA around the same time which is when we became friends and have been grinding since. I'm excited for you to hear all of this and more, on the BWNC podcast today.

How JR Strickland went from sleeping in his car to winning TWO MTV VMA's | EP 06
My sixth guest on the Black With No Cream Podcast is JR Strickland! JR is one of the most talented VFX/Editor/Director's I know. His credits range from Nicki Minaj, Big Sean, Logic, Chris Brown, Trey Songz, Spotify, and many more. When I had just moved to Los Angeles, JR was one of my first friends and we worked closely on several major projects together, so I am excited to finally share his story! We talk about how JR was using Premiere when he was SIX years old (shout out to his pops), how he was rejected in college of an opportunity to create a short film and spend a semester in LA which forced him to be self-taught while in Chicago. He then moved to LA to work with some of the biggest names in the music business and started his own VFX company. This story is super incredible.
