How to Follow Your Calling with Lisa Bevere
Welcome back to our Smart Girl Summer Series, which features real conversations with real friends and colleagues about the behind-the-scenes of our careers and lives. You definitely don’t want to miss today’s chat with my friend, Lisa Bevere. I’ve had so many valuable conversations with Lisa in my life, and I’m so glad to share one with you! This conversation is encouraging and affirming. I personally love Lisa’s perspective on giving up the fight for a seat at the table, and instead, focusing on doing what God has asked us to do. Oh, friends… I agree with her wholeheartedly about this! Lisa Bevere is a wife to John, mom to four men, godmother, internationally known speaker, and New York Times best-selling author. She has spent nearly three decades empowering women of all ages to find their identity and purpose. Listen in to learn more about: How Lisa never dreamed she would be doing the work she is doing now The importance of making exchanges in the lies we believe and how comparison can make us misunderstand God’s love for us These 3 truths: Smart girls know what to hold on to and what to let go of. Smart girls know who to give weight to in their life. Smart girls don't allow random strangers to assign value to you… and so much more! Favorite quotes: ~There’s certain things that when God drops into our hearts we need to actually guard them. There’s people that you should share them with and people you should not share them with . ~We have to think about social media as people being guests in your realm . They do not have the right to hijack it or take you emotionally hostage. ~If we have a revelation that God loves me uniquely then there is no place for comparison. Because comparison says,” I want to be like them or I want to have what they have or want to do what they do” but if I understand that God loves me uniquely then I am going to take the time to find out what God has entrusted me with. ~You have to be faithful in the season. The right thing in the wrong season becomes the wrong thing. ~When you are first starting a journey the things that you see on the road are different from an aerial view. ~Smart girls make sacred spaces in their lives. ~When we sense the Holy Spirit speaking to us , we have to add weight to it by adding action. Make Overthinking Your Superpower with Jon Acuff
There’s an old bumper sticker quote that goes, “Don’t believe everything you think.” But we’ve all done it. It starts as a tiny idea or worry that we push to the back burner. Then slowly over time, it grows and grows until we eventually act on it or let it dictate our decisions. Changing our mindset is a choice, but it’s easy to forget that we are in the driver’s seat when it comes to our thoughts. That’s why I asked my good friend Jon Acuff to join me on the show today. Jon is whip-smart, funny and a New York Times bestselling author, but more than that, he’s on a mission to help others flip the script on overthinking and turn it into a superpower. Throughout our conversation, he shares what he’s learned throughout his research on overthinking and talks about the tools we need to master our thoughts. I loved this conversation, and I just know you’ll love his unique blend of humor, honesty and hope. Stick around to the end to hear all about: 1. What Dolly Parton has in common with telegrams and bald eagles 2. The four simple words you can use to make any goal easier 3. How words can easily control of our thoughts, feelings and emotions 4. The most surprising discovery Jon learned from his research for his new book Soundtracks Favorite quotes: I think everyone tends to undervalue the things they're good at and overvalue the things other people are good at.2. At some point, everybody has to live out the thing they are good at and enjoy being good at that.3. The soundtracks we listen to have a lot more power than we think. They’re playing constantly and what if we can do something about that? What if we can choose the soundtrack we listen to? 4. Repeating things that are positive about yourself puts them at the top of your playlist. So when you’re in a situation where something happens, it’s like your brain grabs the most recent song. In this episode I answer this question: 1. How do you decide when to invest in your business? (52:28) Links to great things we discussed: 1. Jon Acuff Website 2. Parenting From a Place of Peace with Crystal Paine
We’re shifting gears this week and talking about parenting! I don’t usually cover parenting here on the show, so I invited my good friend Crystal Paine to join me. Now, you may know her as the Money Saving Mom, but her message goes beyond good deals at the grocery store. And I’m so glad she’s with us today to talk about what it’s like to be vulnerable, especially when it comes to parenting our children. We dive into love-centered parenting, mom guilt, and what happens when we let our kids make mistakes. She also talks about her latest book and the hard-won lessons she’s taken away from shifting from results-based parenting to a love-centered model of raising her kids. You’re going to want to stay until the end of this episode, friends! Tune in to hear: Crystal’s journey with one of her children, who was experiencing depression and suicidal thoughts How our mental, physical and spiritual health affect our parenting styles and choices Practical tips for productive communication with your kids and how to ask for (and accept!) their feedback Favorite quotes: 1. When we cram truth in and we continue to call out the lie and replace it with truth, it rewires our brain. Like scripture talks about renewing our mind, it's that rewiring of the way that we've always thought that allows us to renew instead of walking in lies and letting those lies be what we lead with. It allows us to have freedom and to walk in truth, and then to live out of that truth.2. Are the words that you are saying to yourself, about yourself and letting just kind of swirl around in your brain, are those words that you would say to other people? 3. Our kids are paying attention to that life we're living before them. And that’s probably going to be the most powerful sermon we are ever going to preach to them. 4. Ultimately, I want to be able to send my kids out as adults, not dependent children. And so if I'm going to do that, I have to let go and not just create all these rules in order to protect them from never getting hurt, never having to make choices and never making mistakes. 5. How we interact with our kids affects how they view God. In this episode I answer this business question: Would you rather have in your team a nice fool or a reliable jerk? (40:01) Great things we discussed: 1. Crystal Paine: The Money Saving Mom & On Instagram @TheMoneySavingMom2. Love-Centered Parenting 3. Graves Into Gardens 4. Off The Clock5. Chrystal Hurst on the power of prayer
Intentionality. Wisdom. Strength. These are the words that come to mind when I think about Chrystal Evans Hurst! She is joining us on the podcast today and pouring out so much wisdom- you don't want to miss it! We cover so many important topics like finding mentors and friends that call us to the next level, what she's learning during COVID-19, and how to actually develop a powerful prayer life. Chrystal also shares her powerful testimony of being a pastor's daughter, who became a single mom at 19. There are so many powerful moments here! We also chat about: How stuffing her emotions impacted her in the long run Why most people don't pray and how to overcome Her experience with homeschooling before we all started it (she's a seasoned pro!) Favorite quotes: 1. I think we should stand up and say, “Listen, I need to learn something. Who can teach me?” and those who can teach sometimes need to stand up and say, “Hey I’ve got something to share, who wants to learn?” 2. I think that life becomes so much more well-lived when we take a risk and love people and we're authentic and transparent and make it a safe place for them to do the same. 3. I believe that when you recognize the power that you have not only as a spiritual being, not only as a woman, but as a believer, where you now have a true divine connection to God through the power of the Holy Spirit- that he's informing your spiritual being, and informing you intuition. It just takes this knowledge to a whole other level. 4. I'm reminded of this power we have of being connected: we may not always know what, we may not always know when, and we may not always know exactly what the thing is- but that God is always speaking. 5. Once we take the expectation off of prayer. Once we make room for it. Once we decide to release and surrender to God instead of trying to do everything ourselves, then we can free ourselves up to pray in a non-prescribed way, but in the way that works for us so that we're doing it as often as we can to leave room for God to talk to us. In this episode, I answer a business question- I am multi-passionate in my pursuits. Can I launch my brand and focus on multiple things at work once? (49:29) Great things we discussed: 1. Chrystal Hurst 2. The 28 Day Prayer Journal 3. The Blessing 4. This Is Us 5. Battlefield Of The Mind 6. Aqua Notes 7. Inception 8. Rattle 9. Standing Strong Hope you loved this episode! Tsh Oxenreider on traveling the world with her family, entrepreneurship, and the messy middle
I’m with my globe-trotting friend Tsh Oxenreider today talking about what it was like to take her young family on a trip around the world for a year, imposter syndrome, and stories of women who make the world go round. In this episode we discuss: What it’s really like for a couple to take three kids around the world for a year. What do internet entrepreneurs really think about the question, “Do people still need to go to college?” The importance of telling women’s stories while we are in the “messy middle” of going for their dreams. How new women entrepreneurs get caught up in comparison and the importance of seeing how other women really "do it all". Listen now: Click here to listen in iTunes. Click here to listen on Soundcloud. Click here to listen on Google Play. Click here to listen on Stitcher. Favorite quotes- After starting our trip around the world, my husband and I asked ourselves "What are we doing traveling around the world for a year with small kids and nothing but backpacks?" People like hearing that there are regular women entrepreneurs in the messy middle of work. On my podcast, Women's Work, I hear from women who fear the Imposter Syndrome of " On no, everyone's going to find out I have no idea what I'm doing." Starting out as a woman entrepreneur, we relate to people who say, "I'm still not sure it's going to work." When I've interviewed women entrepreneurs they would say, "I started out not really knowing what I was doing, but I did it anyway and learned as I went." Bonus: After the interview join me as I answer your questions about life, faith, and business. In this episode, I answer these questions- What is your parenting advice when it comes to disciplining your kids? (37:44) Is God really listening when I talk to him? (40:52) I recently heard an entrepreneur say that to be successful the business always has to come first. And that I can’t really have a life or friends outside of it. Is that really what running your own businesses is like? Nicki Koziarz on overcoming comparison, finding your calling, and saying yes to new adventures
Today I'm with my favorite Bible-teaching-farmer friend Nicki Koziarz talking about how to overcome comparison, and what happens to a family that decides (all of a sudden) to buy a fixer-upper farm. In this episode we discuss: Nicki and her family's unexpected move to their “Fixer Upper Farm” How to recognize and overcome the comparison battle How to overcome the feeling that we aren’t measuring up Favorite quotes- I think we are foolish to allow our souls to believe that comparison doesn’t try to compromise things inside us because it’s been happening since the beginning of time. Comparison is a battle to see who's truth we're ultimately going to align our lives with, ours or God's. We have to trust God so much that if He doesn't give it to us, we don't want it. I think that when we are asking that quiet question ‘why her?’ I think that in order for us to really walk through it and if we are not going to let comparison compromise us, we are going to have to go back to truth! Bonus: After the interview join me as I answer your questions about life, faith, and business. In this episode, I answer these questions- Are you a saver or a spender, and if you have any advice on how you learned to save? (27:00) Are ghosts real? There is no need to apologize for how you are actually wired. You've got to say yes to how you have been wired. To the talents and the abilities you have been given. I want to be a catalyst for other people’s success. What would you like to be said about what you have achieved with your one precious life? Bonus: After the interview join me as I answer your questions about life, faith, and business. In this episode, I answer these questions- I am unhappy because I box myself in life. I don’t try new things because I am afraid if I start something I will fail and look foolish. Can’t go on living this way. Can you help? (41:30) What daily devotional do you use?
