Inauguration of Sri Sathya Sai Arts and Science College for Women, Ananthapur, July 22, 1968THIS is a day full of significance, not only for Ananthapur or this District or this State, but, for all other States also. On the occasion of the School Day of the High School for Girls in this town, as early as 1964, I had announced that what this town needed most was a College exclusively for Women. That sankalpa (resolve) has today realised itself. Very soon, this will become a fullfledged completely equipped educational institution, with a status peculiar to itself. The prompting behind this college is not the search for reputation, or the desire to propagate a cult, or the hope of monetary profit. I know that fame is a fickle figment, that reputation is something that rots, that profit is defiled when it is measured in terms of cash.I have allowed this college to rise, because it will instill in the minds of the students the ancient ideals of Sathya, Dharma, Shaanthi and Prema, ideals that are delineated in the Vedhas, described in Shaasthras, illustrated in the epics, practised by countless generations of the men and women of this land and confirmed as best suited for individual and social progress by its saints and sages, law-givers and leaders, for centuries.All are eager to learn the secret of peace.Every student born and bred in this land is the inheritor of this precious heritage and has a right to know it and benefit by it. Agriculture is for living; mind-culture is for life. Skills are for shaping material things so that they cater more for the comfort of man; studies are for shaping attitudes, feelings, desires, emotions and impulses of man, so that they may confer more peace, more joy, more fortitude on man.Prahlaadha told his father that "the father who leads the son to God is the only father who deserves the reverence due to that status." Fathers who lead their sons into the vortex of sense pleasure, the volcanoes of physical passion, the boggy marsh of pride and pomp---are unaware of their duties and responsibilities. So too, an educational system that keeps children away from God---the only refuge, the only kinsman, the only guide and guard---is really a system where the blind are engaged in blinding those who depend on them.India has forgotten its real source of strength; it is seeking strength in the debilitating hunt for cankerous comfort. This college will feed the roots of that genuine culture of Bhaarath, which alone can revitalise the people of India, and through them, of the whole world. My visit to East Africa has shown that people there are eager to know about the culture and philosophy of India so that they may learn the secret of peace and joy.Women, who were all these centuries, the bulwarks of Indian culture, the guardians of Indian spiritual wealth, are fast succumbing to the flimsy attractions of foppish culture, as is evident from the modes of living and the social behaviour of many educated women. This is the result of the artificial and empty system of education, as well as the subtle pulls of cheap literature and shoddy films. Women are the mothers of the coming generation; they are the teachers of that generation, during the first five years of life.The mother's responsibility is most crucialThe mother is the first of the five Maathas (Mothers), that the Indian child encounters: Dhehamaatha (the mother that gave birth to this body); Go-maatha (the cow that gives sustaining milk); Bhoo-maatha (the land that grows the crops which feed the body); Dhesa-maatha (the Native country that gives protection, care, love, rights and chances to serve and elevate oneself to one's full height), and Vedha-maatha (the heritage of spiritual treasure that reveals the aim and purpose of human life and takes one step by step, towards the Goal of Self-realisation). The Dhehamaatha must reveal to the child the glories of all the other four; so her responsibility is the greatest and most crucial. That is the reason why it has been resolved to start a women's college, in every State, in order to promote the Dharma, which I have come to establish. This is part of the general task. Every act of Mine, every word, will have only that goal in view.Aathma-vidhya (science of the Self) alone can fix the mind in Dharma. The students here will be given a glimpse of that Aathma- vidhya; they will develop a keen desire to know about it--- knowledge and desire that will stand them in good stead, when they encounter the problems of life. The war of Kurukshethra, for which the Mahaabhaaratha is the background and the stage, lasted for eighteen days; other wars have lasted longer, seven years' thirty years and even a hundred years! But, however long, they ended! They had a finish, some time!But the battle between Jeevi and Maayaa, the individual and the fascinating, deluding wiles of the really unreal Nature with its enticing multi-fariousness---this battle is continuous; the earliest man got entangled in it; the last man on earth will have to fight it. It can bring victory to the Jeevi (individual) only when, like Arjuna, he chooses the Lord as his charioteer and surrenders his judgement, his desires, to Him. Maayaa can be conquered only by allying yourselves with the Master of Maayaa, Maadhava. This is the lesson that Aathma vidhya teaches, this is the lesson that children in India have a right to imbibe; children from all over the world can benefit immensely from it.If your foot slips, you earn a fracture; if your tongue slips, you fracture some one's faith or joy. That fracture can never be set right; that wound will fester forever. Therefore, use the tongue with great care. 2001-08-31: Puttaparthi, Sai Kulwanth Hall (Onam )What happiness did the demon Somakasura attain by stealing the Vedas and hurling abuses at God? What was the fate of the ten-headed Ravana who abducted the consort of Rama? What did Duryodhana, who refused to give the Pandavas even as much land as would a needlepoint occupy, take with him at the end? What happened to the wicked Kamsa ultimately who indulged in the gruesome act of slaying infants? The same will be the fate of the wicked today. If not today, at least tomorrow, they are bound to meet their doom. Oh man! Do not entertain excessive desires. Better that you lead a life of moderation.

1973-05-23 : Bangalore, Brindavan (Summer Course )Man generally desires to get something and in fact gets something different. By his ambitions and in his imaginations, man builds up several ideas which are like the nests of various birds. These desires are not generally fulfilled in the manner in which he wants them to be fulfilled. Life is like a long garland. This garland has two ends, one the birth and the other the death. In between these two ends, the garland consists of many flowers. Your dreams, thoughts, ideas, sorrows, joys and pleasures are the various flowers that make up this garland. We have to consider and come to a conclusion whether we shall regard life itself as the garland or whether we shall regard the connections of our body with life as the garland. When we look at the two ends of this garland, it will be quite clear that these ends, the birth and the death, are relevant only to the body and not to the Jiva inside the body. In that context, whether it is pain or pleasure, sorrow or happiness, dream or imagination, all of them are concerned with the body and not with the Jiva. It is the body which is undergoing many changes and transformations. The Atma does not undergo any change but remains permanent, steady, pure, selfless and firm. Truly, our body goes through various stages like boyhood, youth, adolescence and old age.

1973-05-25 : Bangalore, Brindavan (Summer Course )Good or bad, happiness or sorrow, and such other things which appear to be different and the opposites of each other are in reality one and the same and are like two reflections of the same object. Our Vedantins have said that there is only one thing and that is Brahman and there is no second to that one Brahman. We may ask how we are experiencing diversity and missing the oneness in a situation where there is only one thing, namely Brahman. If I ask a question, “Who amongst you is Krishna?” someone will respond by saying, “I am Krishna”. If I ask a question, “Who amongst you is Rama?” someone else will respond by saying, “I am Rama”. In this conversation, you see that Krishna and Rama are names appropriate to different individuals with different forms but in the replies, all of them say “I”. This “I” is common to all of them. This “I” is everywhere. Therefore, if one is able to understand that “I” is everywhere, it is easy for him to grasp the real significance of the common element. This sacred sound “I” is appropriate only to the Atma. Since the same Atma is present in everyone, equal-mindedness is possible for everyone to acquire.

Those who perceive it are truly fortunate ones. In fact, it is not possible to comprehend divinity in its fullness. However, the man who realizes the same atmic principle in others as he experiences it in himself can understand divinity, irrespective of the fact whether he is a householder or a renunciant. In such a person, divinity is firmly established. He becomes divinity itself.

In what is deemed as love in the world-- whether it be maternal love, brotherly love, or friendship---there is an element of selfishness. Only God's love is totally free from the taint of selfishness. Divine love reaches out even to the remotest being. It brings together those who are separate. It raises man from animality to divinity. It transforms gradually all forms of worldly love to Divine love. To experience this Divine love, men must be prepared to give up selfishness and self-interest. They must develop purity and steadfastness. With firm faith in the Divine, they must foster the love of God regardless of all obstacles and ordeals.

In man, in his body, there is a limit for everything. Our blood pressure is said to be perfectly normal if it is 120/80. The temperature of the body is said to be normal if it is at 98.4If it goes from 98.4 to 99, that is the beginning of the disease. If our eyeballs see light beyond the limit then our retina gets burnt. For every part of our body, there has to be a limit. Man’s life itself is a limited company.If there are no boundaries and limits, then life goes on the wrong path.

Divine Discourse - 1973-05-24There are two things which are important for man’s life. One is confidence in one’s own self and the other is cleansing one’s own mind. Man cannot live by himself in isolation. The entire world depends upon the social structure and on the manner in which individuals are knit together into a society. It has been the good luck of our country to have had a society which is well knit on the basis of sacred principles. The quality of forbearance of our society is not to be seen elsewhere. It is blood that flows through the arteries of Indian youth. It is not water. You have to make a determined effort to revive our sacred culture and demonstrate to the rest of the world the vitality that is contained therein. The youth of India should be prepared to sacrifice even their lives for the sake of truth. This country has been such that it had always traversed along the path of truth, had lit the lamp of truth and shed the light of truth. Today, Indians have apparently been subdued by the situations that prevail in the country, by the times in which they are living and by the environment through which they are passing. They have forgotten the greatness of their own culture and are being ridiculed by others. The sacred tenets of our scriptures such as: respect your mother as God, respect your father as God, respect your teacher as God and respect your guest as God, no longer convey any meaningful messages to us in the social makeup of today.

Divine Discourse 1973-05-27Through service, we should be able to fulfill the purpose of our life. In this sacred country of ours, the idea of service has been handed over to us by the Rishis and the gurus. They had enjoined on us that we should fulfill our lives by service. In all the Gurukulas morals and ethics were taught. Teaching good things and preaching great ideals were their daily routine. Man was taught how to cherish sacred ideals and lead a good life. In the Gurukulas, morals and moral life were only taught, but in the Rishikulas, such ideals which promoted the prosperity of the world were put into practice and demonstrated. However, today neither such Gurukulas, nor such Rishikulas exist.

Divine Discourse 1996-07-30The true meaning of Guru is "one who dispels the darkness of ignorance". Another meaning of the word is "one who is beyond attributes and forms, namely, the Supreme Self (The Brahman)". When this Self is within you where is the need to search for someone to teach you? A teacher who teaches others has had a teacher himself. The one who has no Guru above him is the true guru.

Everyone sees physical Swami, but one should not see the physical form but seek inside. Outer vision is useless. Every moment one sees the physical world around but should look within. When one starts looking within then starts the journey inwards one’s true form. Hence one must not look outside but look within. The outside world harbours all useless things. There is the owner of a house. The owner throws away all the useless and waste baskets and other items outside. He throws all the valueless items outside but securely stores away the valuable items under lock and key in Godrej almirah. Servants see only the waste items thrown out but do not know about the valuables stored away inside. Therefore who is the one who seeks outside? Only the labours seek outside. The servants who work for the owner seek outside. The servant sees outside but it is only the owner who knows the items inside. The valuable items- the gold, diamonds, precious stones etc, inside the house is known to the residents of the house. Since everyone is looking at things present outside, everyone is a servant. What valuable things are present inside!!! The Tarakam, Sankhyam, Amanaskamu are like the most valuable diamonds. All these exist within one self but one is unaware of it. What is the reason? One has not become the owner yet. One can see these valuable things once he becomes the owner. God is the owner. When one belongs to God, the owner, one can understand all the valuable aspects. Therefore one must befriend the owner. How to befriend the ‘owner’? Vedantam gives good examples. Swami explains these aspects in a simple manner so that students too can understand it. The owner of the house is on the terrace. A visitor comes to see the owner. But there is a big Alsatian dog at the gate. That dog is likened to ‘Maya’. It will not allow the visitor to enter inside. What should the visitor do to enter the house? If one can overcome and control the ‘Maya’, the dog, then he can enter the house. Alternately, the visitor can call the owner, “Sir! Sir!”, then the owner who is on the terrace will come out and see. He would come down saying, “O! Hello! You have come!!” The dog would not say anything when the owner escorts the visitor inside along with him. The dog will remain silent when the visitor is in the company of the owner. But it will obstruct the path when the visitor tries to get in alone. The all pervading and eternal witness, God, is on a higher plane. He has appointed ‘Maya’ at the entrance. Control over this ‘Maya’ is ‘gnyaanamu’, wisdom. How to have control over ‘Maya’? Whose creation is ‘Maya’? It is the creation of the owner; it is the owner who has put the dog- ‘Maya’. The dog would give way inside when the visitor knows the master very well. The visitor must introduce himself saying that he and the owner are one and the same. This is stated as “Adwaitha darshanam Jnana”, the vision of non-dualism is true wisdom. Alternately, if the visitor calls out, “Rama, Krishna, Govinda”, the owner will come out to have a look. The owner then will come down and take the visitor along with him. Then the ‘Maya’ will not affect the visitor. Therefore in order to see the owner, God, one must follow either the path of Bhakthi, devotion or the path of Jnana, wisdom.

There were Bhishma, Dronacharya, Krupacharya –all were present but none replied. Krishna later said, “Bhishma, you are a wise person. Dronacharya you are a great teacher; you are not merely a teacher but a guru. You are an acharya. Who is an ‘acharya’? An acharya is the one who leads by example. You say you are an acharya but you too did not open your mouth!! Therefore, the evil effect of the sin committed by Duryodhana is not limited to him alone, but it will affect the elders of the Kuru lineage. Not speaking against the wrongs though fully aware is a sin too. You have been watching the evil doings with your eyes so you too have committed the sin.” He told Bhishma, “You are wise and knowledgeable but you never raised your voice so you too are a sinner.” The person who committed the sin, the person who witnessed it, the one who encourages it and the one who suffers it –all the four are sinners. Therefore the sin lies not only with the person committing it but also with the person who does not object it or correct it, the person who encourages it and the person who witnesses it. Bhishmacharya, Dronacharya and shukraacharya are all sinners. So what was their fate in the end? Bhishma had to lie and suffer on the bed of arrows for fifty six days till his death. He was a man of great wisdom, why did he face such an end? He suffered so because knowing the mistake he did not object or correct it. Dronacharya was a great teacher, acharya. What happened to him at the end? He was the one who taught the usage of arms and archery to Kauravas and Pandavas. When Yudhistra said loudly, “Ashwathama hathaha” and whispered the word “kunjara” Dronacharya, who was very attached to his son, gave up his weapons in the battlefield. The attachment is the primary reason. There are three types of attachments namely- attachment to wealth- dhaneshana, attachment to wife- daareshana, attachment to son –putreshana. These are the important mantras in Vedanta. Vedanta states that man commits many sins due these attachments. This is the main principle in Tarakam. Therefore God manifests to the one who, in all the five mantras that one chants and in all the five mudras, has one-pointed concentration. The divine principle of Brahman is present in everyone.

In fact, God Himself will become a puppet in your hand. You will not be in the hands of God, but God will be in your hands when you have love and faith. Jumsai said that, though each person looks different from the other, the same Atma is present in everyone. All are one, be alike to everyone. He said, all are children of God. But according to Me, all are not children of God but are God Himself.

We should see that we don't misuse the intellect. Mind may change. Mind is like a mad monkey. Body is like a water bubble. Don't follow the body, don't follow the mind. Follow the conscience. That is the nature of the intellect, follow it. When you follow the intellect, you are in the right path. The intellect stands as a witness for everything. When intellect is pure, unsullied and selfless, you don't need to fear anyone. Where do you find fear? Where there is a mistake, there is fear. When there is no mistake, you don't need to have fear.

Hence it is considered an auspicious day. Auspiciousness consists in diverting the mind towards God. This calls for getting rid of the inherited animal tendencies in man. You are only passing through the reaction of your actions. I have not given you any suffering." When Jesus blessed him so, the mind of Paul changed. Later he became a servant of God and he composed a text, and came to be known as "St. Paul". In this way, Jesus corrected wicked people, cruel people, bad people, and reformed them. It is only the body that is put to suffering. We have to worship Jesus keeping these ideals in mind, and not otherwise.

Divine Discourse Krishnashtami September 03, 1988The concept of Avatar implies faith in God and in the divinity inherent in man. Man does not merely mean the human form. Man is distinguished from other animals and creatures by his capacity to judge what is permanent and what is transient, and his ability to recognize the past, the present and the future. Man alone has the capacity to comprehend this threefold nature of time. Man can ruminate over the past and speculate about the future. He can experience the present. However, man should not worry about what is past. The present is the product of the past. What has happened is beyond recall. It is futile to worry about the future because it is uncertain. Concern yourself only with the present. By "present" we may be thinking only of this moment. But this is not the present as Divinity sees it. For the Divine, "present" is what is "omnipresent."

Divine Discourse September 03, 1988This physical body is a mere instrument. It is God's will which makes this move, which makes this enjoy, which makes this live and which makes this suffer. Man who does not recognise this basic truth thinks that he is close to God, he knows God and he is a great devotee of God - such are his great thoughts. Once upon a time, in order to test those people who thought that they were very great, Krishna enacted a small drama. He acted as if he is suffering from untold pain, unheard of and unbearable pain. He bandaged his head with a big towel if he was suffering from an unbearable headache. Knowing the future events, He enacted this play. Rukmini, Satyabhama, Jambavati and the other women who were there came to Krishna, they began questioning him in a number of ways. Swami, we have not seen you in such pain earlier, what is this pain, what is the remedy? He began saying that, 'Oh I cannot bear this pain at all, it is giving me a tremendous shock' and so on. They questioned Him, 'What is the remedy for this, Swami?' 'If the dust of a great devotees feet could be brought and applied on My head it would relive My pain'. Just at that time Narada entered in an appropriate way. Satyabhama, Rukmini, Jambavati approached Narada and prayed to him. 'Well, Narada please let us know how to cure this particular pain'. When Narada questioned Krishna He gave the same reply - 'The remedy is to apply the dust of the feet of a great devotee and put it on My head, I will get cured. Narada said, "Such a great devotee as Satyabhama is here, the dust of her feet can be offered to you easily isn't it Krishna?" he said. Satyabhama felt embarrassed. She was Krishna's wife. 'If the dust of wife's feet is put on the head of the husband, I would go to hell, I do not want to go to hell by giving the dust of my feet for Krishna'. Rukmini gave the came answer. Both of them asked Narada, 'Can there be a greater devotee than you, Narada? The dust of your feet could be offered to Krishna'. 'Mother, I will not be able to give the dust of my feet because I would go to hell and lose all the pleasures and privileges that I am having, like going to Kailash and Vaikunta. Is it that the dust of the feet of a devotee should be put on Krishna?! It is a great sin, sacrilege'. This is the type of understanding on the part of these devotees. Krishna then began shouting as if He is not able to bear the sharp pain of the headache. Narada asked Krishna, 'Swami let me know from where I can get the medicine?' Krishna said, 'Go to Gopikas get the dust of their feet, I will definitely be free from this headache'. He went to gokulam in a moment. When he was walking in the streets chanting and singing the name of God, Gopikas came running to him. They began showering questions on Narada, 'How is our Gopala? Are you coming from Mathura?' Narada told them, 'I have never seen Krishna suffering from such unbearable pain in my life. He is having a lot of pain and I have come here for taking some medicine. Gopikas asked Narada, 'Is there some medicine in our Gokulam?! We are prepared to do anything for the sake of Krishna'. Narada said he wants the dust of your feet. One gopika ran home and brought a bed-sheet and all of them danced on it, collected a lot of dust from their feet and packed it into a bundle and gave it to Narada. They prayed, 'Rush immediately, O Narada, and please see that our Krishna is free from the headache. Narada was shocked and surprised. These people are totally uneducated and they do not know anything, they are foolish ones. The Gopikas told Narada, 'We don't mind going to the worst hell if there is anything like that, if our Krishna can be okay we are all okay'. They only prayed, 'Our Krishna should be all right. We are not bothered about whichever place we go'. The moment that these gopikas offered the dust of their feet, Krishna became all right. By the time Narada offered the dust to Krishna, he was already happy and relieved of the headache. He was totally cheerful. Krishna said, 'The moment the gopikas gave the dust of their feet to you, I am relieved of My headache'. Sacrifice your selfishness. He declared that the Gopikas are true devotees and great devotees. He declared that those people cannot be called devotees at all who go on thinking what would happen to them by doing such and such a thing, who are immersed in their selfishness. I am residing in every living being. That dust is Mine, the foot is Mine and that head is Mine. Everything is Mine. My feet and head can go everywhere. Everything belongs to Me. Can anyone comprehend Me? I am residing in all the 84 lakh species - I am a part of them. I am the greatest thief among thieves. Can anyone comprehend Me. In your understanding he is a thief, in my understanding he is I. The avatar comes down in order to teach this unity of existence to all human beings.

Divine Discourse June 19, 1996Be it morning or evening I am your servant An incident described in the Bhagavatham, offers an important message. Kuchela a devotee of Krishna, went to see the latter. He did not want to go empty handed and being poor, all he could take was some puffed rice which he wrapped up in a shabby piece of cloth since that was all he could manage. Krishna happily accepted the gift, opened the package and began eating what was in it, even as Kuchela watched with great embarrassment. Thoughts raced through Kuchela mind. “I am poor and all could offer was something packed in a piece of old cloth. Even so, Krishna seems to be happy with the gift and is clearly relishing the puffed rice I brought. Krishna may be happy but I have committed a serious blunder bringing such a trivial offering to the Emperor of the Universe. Even as Kuchela was thinking in this manner Rukmini the consort of Krishna rushed towards Krishna and stopped Him eating. Kuchela thought that Rukmini did what she did because the puffed rice was an inappropriate offering to an exalted one like Krishna. But Krishna knew Rukmini better. To make Kuchela understand what Rukmini was doing, Krishna asked Rukmini why she was objecting to His eating puffed rice. Rukmini replied, “Krishna, you are the servant of Kuchela while I am your servant. I should therefore get my portion of what You are eating! Please therefore, give me what is left of what you are eating. God’s vision is infinitely vast, and His Design full of grandeur. Unable to understand Cosmic Infinity, humans are often quite casual while dealing with matters Divine. God is infinitely large-hearted. No one has such a large Heart, and indeed none can have it. Slowly, Kuchela was beginning to understand what was happening. When he returned home, Kuchela was stunned to see his humble house transformed into a great mansion, while his wife and children were dressed in gorgeous clothes and wearing expensive jewellery. Kuchela’s wife ran to her husband full of joy and, catching hold of his feet plied him with questions like, “O my dear husband! How merciful and bountiful God is! Tell me, what did Krishna and you speak about? What did He say to you? How kind and compassionate God is! Truly, He is incomparable!!” Kuchela said in reply, “As soon as I sent word to Krishna through His gatekeepers about my arrival, He personally came to receive me. Rushing towards me as soon as He saw me, He came near, stood for a moment, carefully looked me over from head to toe, and then folded me in a warm embrace as if I was a long-lost soul.” Kuchela continued: “Who can comprehend the Lord’s Infinite compassion?! I poor Kuchela offered only a handful of puffed rice and He has acknowledged that humble offering by showering us with abundant wealth! Is there anyone who can describe God’s Love? All I can say is that God is Love and Love is God, and both are indescribable! God being limitless, so is His Love. Humans, on the other hand, tend to shrink and contract whatever love they are capable of. God’s love is expansive while the love of humans tends to shrink on account of narrow-mindedness.”

Uddhava summoned the Gopikas and told them, “Come, listen to me, I shall teach you the path of Yoga.” The Gopikas were illiterate. Uddhava began to tell them, “You have not studied the Vedas, the Shastras, Puranas or the Upanishads (the sacred texts)! You are all ignorant. Therefore, I shall initiate you into Yoga and by its power you can experience the omnipresence of the Lord Krishna and get rid of your troubles and worries.” Then the Gopikas said, “Oh Uddhava! We have only one mind. We do not have another mind to devote to ‘Yogabhyasa’, the practice of yoga. And to acquire other yogic powers, we do not have the third mind. We do not have the fourth mind which would enable us to please our husbands, our mothers-in-law and other members of the family. If we had many minds, we would have given one to Yoga, another to family, and the like. But we have only one mind and that is completely given, completely surrendered to Krishna. So to learn your yoga we do not have a second mind. Kindly retrace your steps and go back!” The path of Gopikas, single-minded devotion, is verily the best path. We should be with one mind only. We should not have two, three minds. With one mind itself we keep getting into troubles and if we have many minds our troubles will also be manifold.

Divine Discourse Shiva Rathri March 08, 1997The bhajans this time were done in a ritualistic fashion. Greater attention was paid to raga, tala, laya and shruti (the melody, the beat, the rhythm and the tone). All these are vyavahaarika (conventional qualities). To elevate the bhajans to a spiritual level what are required are true feeling and ecstasy of devotion. The songs should flow nor from the lips but from the heart. When the songs come out of the heart they will be blissful for the ears.

Divine Discourse March 08, 1997The one with complete faith in the Lord will pray whole heartedly and the Lord will respond by granting the boons. Without faith how can one demand the Lord? God is not one’s servant! But if one has the true devotion then the Lord is verily the servant of His devotees!! So God is servant of all. A small example to illustrate this: Servant stands in waiting at the threshold of the Lord’s shrine; similarly the Lord too stands alert and in waiting, like a servant, for His devotees to hear their pleas and to grant their wishes!! God becomes a master if one is not devoted or if one does not foster any divine feelings. People here know the story of Hanuman. Hanuman is virtuous and strong. In the presence of Lord Rama Hanuman stood humbly and in front of Ravana he stood in all his valour. What is the reason? In front of an egoistic person the devotee stood like a warrior. And he stood humbly in presence of the Lord who is the embodiment of love. Hence life must be carried on based on the circumstances. Therefore God always submits Himself to His devotees. The Lord is extolled as ‘bhakta paradheenaya namaha!’ meaning that the Lord is always submissive to those who are devoted. God is always devoted to His devotees when one has pure and sacred devotion.

Divine Discourse June 23, 1996Cultures of previous births are, rather, difficult to unravel and reconcile, during one’s present life span. Even if one’s past lives are recapitulated with form and name, and narrated to a person, he refuses to believe it? Why? Because, you were in a different form and name then and you have forgotten about them in the present life. Even if both the name and form are made known to you, still believing the past is difficult to accept.

Divine Discourse June 23, 1996At one time, emperor Parikshit said to Suka about his impending death in seven days. He has to leave his body in seven days. It is a curse given by a saint. Why should he waste these seven days precious time? He wanted to sanctify his life by praying the divine. He summoned sage Vyasa and started listening to his discourses. Both Vyasa and Suka are powerful Brahmcharis. Yet they were describing the powerful devotion of Gopikas with authority. Parikshit got a doubt and asked Vyasa- “Swami! how come the Gopikas who had no knowledge or literacy or any spiritual coaching could get into the fold of the divine and win His blessings? Divine was pleased with their devotion and made them experience God. The saint replied, “Oh-mad cap, you are wrong if you think you can see God by reading the scriptures. No- No. The scriptures are meant only for reading and not to see God”.

Divine Discourse - November 21, 1987All the members of this organisation should become “thyagarajus”- men with spirit of sacrifice and “yogarajus”- men with control over their desires and not become “bhogarajus”- men immersed in worldly pleasures and luxuries. One must give up one’s selfishness, offer everything at the feet of the lord and enter the society with the will to serve the society and be happy at its prosperity. There is an important aspect that the members assembled here must take notice. One need not take up the service activities that are beyond one’s capacities but do the activity to one’s best potential. For serving, one has to have the body and the mind to do so. The sacred will to do the service and an able body with sound capacities to implement the will – these are the essential requirements to do service. Wealth, money etc are not the requirements to do seva. When one gives importance to wealth and money in such activities, it depletes one’s energy, one’s willingness to do the service and gives rise to discrepancies amongst the members.

Divine Discourse - July 09, 1998 GurupoornimaConcentrate on the love of God. Although one’s mother, father, and preceptor are to be adored as divine beings, they are not God. God should be worshipped as mother, father, preceptor, kinsman, and friend. Father, mother, and preceptor dwell in their respective abodes. But God dwells in your heart. Love the Lord who resides in your heart. All other objects of love are impermanent. What is the use of education if you have not learnt to worship God?

Mother gives you your body. Father provides the means of nourishment and growth of the body. Acharya gives you education and God gives you everything. Therefore, you should never forget these four and treasure them in your heart. Mother and father have their place in the heart of man. He should not forget them even if he is in great difficulty or upset over something. One who forgets his or her parents cannot be a human being. How can you exist without your parents? They are the seeds of your life; the very source of your life on earth. Therefore, parents should have prime importance in our life. Divine Discourse June 20, 1996Embodiment's of Love! The hall-mark of love is Thyaga (selfless sacrifice). Love seeks nothing from anyone. It bears no ill-will towards anyone. It is utterly selfless and pure. Failing to understand the true nature of love, man yearns for it in various ways. Love has to be cherished with feelings of selflessness and sacrifice. In what is deemed as love in the world-- whether it be maternal love, brotherly love, or friendship---there is an element of selfishness. Only God's love is totally free from the taint of selfishness. Divine love reaches out even to the remotest being. It brings together those who are separate. It raises man from animality to divinity. It transforms gradually all forms of worldly love to Divine love. To experience this Divine love, men must be prepared to give up selfishness and self-interest. They must develop purity and steadfastness. With firm faith in the Divine, they must foster the love of God regardless of all obstacles and ordeals.

Divine Discourse 19 July, 1996Devotion is the basis to attain knowledge of the Supreme Being. Devotion is the panacea to get rid of the disease of birth and death. Devotion leads to the knowledge of eternal truth and confers liberation, which is the ultimate goal of life.

Divine Discourse July 19, 1996Thyagaraja said, “O lord, how can I decide who you are?! How am I to know if you are Shiva or Madhava? ‘Ra’ is the primal letter in the eight lettered Madhava mantra ‘Om Namo Narayanaya’ ” Without the ‘ra’ syllable the mantra becomes ‘nayanaya’ which means ‘chopping’ and so the mantra loses its significance. Tyagaraja further says, “In the mantra ‘Om namah Shivaya’, ‘ma’ is the primal and life letter” And its absence makes the mantra ‘om nah shivaya’ which means inauspicious. “I pay my respects to the one who knows these details. How am I to know if you are Shiva or Madhava?” In Shiva mantra ‘ma’ is the life letter and in Madhava mantra ‘ra’ is the life letter. These two letters make the word ‘RAMA’ and so Thyagaraja says that he salutes the word Rama. So there is none in this world who does not chant the Lord’s name. One thinks of God in one form or the other.

Divine Discourse - June 21, 1996Once upon a time, Lord Krishna approached Surdas and said, “O Surdas, would you like to see me? I will give you sight.” Surdas said, “Swami, people have eyes, but are they able to see you? “Kannulundi gruddi ayi, Kalyana karamaina, Nee roopa darsimpa nerarairi” Though they have eye sight they are blind to look at the auspicious form of yours!! “Chevi undi chevatulayi, atimanoharamaina, Nee gaana maalakimpa nerarairi” Though they have ears they are deaf to the melodious music!! What is the use of the ears that are like big plates? Can they hear your divine flute? They have eyes like the cotton balls; are they able to see you? No!! I want eyes that can see you. I need the ears that can hear the divine music from your flute. I do not want the physical, bodily ears and eyes.” That is the real wisdom, ‘Gyanam’. That is true renunciation.

Divine Discourse July 09, 1998Shankaracharya had five disciples. One is very pure hearted. The others came there to learn Shastras and Upanishads and other knowledge. They were going through logic and grammar. One day Shankaracharya was teaching this logic. One student wanted to attend to the personal duties of the teacher. He would collect all the clothes of the guru and take it to the river when he would go to bathe. This disciple got completely involved in these duties in attending the personal needs of the guru. Thinking, chanting and and repeating the name of the Guru, he started washing the clothes and he finds that the water of the Ganges was rising. The water reached his neck when he noticed this. He was not fear stricken because he would drown, he thought he may not be able to survive. "By evening time it may not be possible for me to handover the clothes to my Guru" that was his main thought. " I should handover these clothes to the Guru. It doesn't matter even if I lose my life". He kept the bundle of clothes on his head and started chanting the name of his Guru. Wherever he kept his foot to step ahead, there arose a lotus flower from the stone. The student was named Padmapada. The guru summoned him and blessed him. "Service to Guru is greatest. You considered Guru as your God. God is not separate from your Guru. Guru is Brahma, Guru is Vishnu, Guru is Shiva. Do not get carried away by today's interpretation of Guru. God is only Guru. The creation, sustenance and annihilation are divine qualities. Consider God as your Guru. Don't take individuals as your Guru". Thus, he blessed Padmapada. The other four disciples used to make fun of Padmapada. At a moment of time he could chant all his lessons learnt. In fact, he was much better than all those who had studied everyday. Shankaracharya asked, "How are you chanting all these things?" He said Guru, "You are my everything, I surrender myself to you". Who is Shankara? The one without doubts (Shanka) is Shankara. Shankara has no doubts.

Divine Discourse September 07, 1998Many went to Ramakrishna and asked him. Vivekananda also was there. They asked him, 'Swami have you seen God?' Yes I have seen he replied. Where have you seen him? Just as you see me or I see You I saw God in the same way. Yes, I have seen God. Then why cant you show him to me? You too can see God. Why is it that I cannot see him? Oh mad cap, you see God but still you say that you haven't seen him. There cannot be greater fool than you. You see the world using the worldly vision. I see the world with a divine feeling. Feeling is very important. But one thing here. The man in the world cries for children, cry for wife, for money, for food, but we can't find anyone crying for God. When you cry for God, you can see him. If you cry for the world then how do you expect to see God? How is it possible? It is impossible. The thing which you pine for you will get that. Pine for God. That was the teaching of Ramakrishna to Vivekananda. Child, you are crying for so many things. You should shed tears for God and not for the worldly things. Cry for God and he is sure to manifest himself to you. Everything is within the mind not outside. So, when you want to see and experience God, dedicate yourself to God.

Divine Discourse April 13, 2002Embodiments of Love! Be it any place, any state, any country, any region, any gender, any person the human quality of the human being must be fostered. One must not waste one’s time by indulging in selfishness. God sent Narada in search of a true noble soul spending its time and life in a sacred way. Narada said, “Swami, whom should I select?” God said,” The one who repeats and chants Lord’s holy name whole-heartedly, that person is truly a human. The one with a pure heart is a ‘human being’ and from that pure heart the sacred name of the Lord must emanate. Such a man is true human. One can involve in the matters of the world, those are worldly tendencies. One should not prioritize them. They are temporary happiness. The one who does not chant the glory of the Lord on such sacred festivals is not a human. “ Narada pondered on this and said, “Swami! I repeat your name, “Govinda, Narayana” incessantly; in fact I do not see a time when I have stopped chanting your name! Is there a greater devotee than me?” There the ego started in Narada. To consider oneself as the only devotee is a sign of ego. God said, “There are lots of such devotees, son! Every home has one as does every inch of earth. That is not true devotion. True devotion should rise from the heart, spread all around and sanctify every deed performed. The food eaten reaches the stomach, gets digested there and the essence is supplied to all the parts. Similarly, the chanting of the holy name rising in the heart should reach the eyes, the ears, the tongue, the nose, the limbs, the feet—the divinity should manifest in all the body, then and only then can one say that one has chanted the Lord’s name. When the essence of digested food reaches the eyes, the eyes get the qualities of the food taken. That is to say when the chanting reaches the eyes, one’s sight becomes sacred. When it reaches the tongue, one utters only sacred words; when it reaches the ears, one hears only the sacred sounds. When it reaches the feet, one goes only to sacred places. When it reaches the hands, they indulge in sacred and fruitful deeds. He, whose body parts indulge in sacred activities prescribed for them, is a true human. So search for such a man.” Narada searched all around but he could not get rid of the ego in him. On the way back, while he was passing through a forest, he saw a tribal wood cutter sitting at a place, chanting the Lord’s name with closed eyes. Narada approached him and said, “Sir, who are you?” The tribal replied, “Swami, I am a hunter and am an ardent devotee of the Lord.” Narada was astonished hearing the tribal‘s words, “Are you an ardent devotee? If you are such an ardent devotee why do you have knife in your hands? You have kept it to kill somebody.” The tribal replied, “No. No swami, it’s not for that purpose. I intend to do four tasks with this knife.” Narada: “What are they?” The tribal: “First I want to kill Draupadi.” Narada: “Draupadi is great devotee. Draupadi contemplates on Krishna always. Lord himself came to her rescue. Why do you want to kill her?” The tribal: “She is, no doubt, a devotee, but at one time she called out to Krishna for help as he was eating his food and he left his food to go to her. He could not finish his meals because of her. Since she made the Lord forsake his food, I want kill her.” Narada proceeded further and saw Prahlada. Prahlada was chanting the name of the Lord, “Narayana!” The Tribal: “Son, no doubt you are chanting the name of the Lord. But what is the consequence of your action? By calling out the name of the Lord you are depriving Him of food and sleep. When your father was torturing you by trampling with elephants, you called out to Lord Narayana and the Lord allowed himself to be trampled by the elephants to save you. Is this the help that you rendered to Lord Narayana? So I will kill Prahlada.” Narada: “So who is the third person?” The tribal: “There is a person by name Narada, who has a stringed instrument in his hands and goes on calling out, “Narayana”. His devotion is not spiritual; it is mired in selfishness. So I want to kill him.” This made Narada scared. He thought, “This fall is all due to my ego.” The Tribal: “Then there is Meera. She always repeated the name “Giridhara nagara”. In spite of all that repeating she could not experience the bliss. When she called out “Giridhara” all the slaps rendered to her by her mother-in-law were found on the Lord’s cheeks and this amounted to hurting the Lord. Therefore I want kill her.” Narada reached Vaikuntha, the abode of Lord Narayana. Narada said, “Swami! I searched everywhere and investigated all. I found that people who repeated the Lord’s name were considered as wicked.” The lord said, “No, no Narada you are mistaken. One thinks that the Lord is subjected to suffering by repeating the Lord’s name out of one’s love for the Lord. You think that you are depriving the Lord of food and sleep. You think that God’s happiness is your happiness. Lord should be happy and blissful at all times and under all circumstances. He should not be put to any inconvenience either physically or mentally. You are a true devotee if you can give happiness to the Lord.” Then Narada realised, “Swami you gave me this task to kill my ego.” There are many such sacred stories in the history of Bharath which have spread the message in the whole world. One must not cause even an iota of inconvenience to the Lord though one may have great devotion. One will be hurt if the Lord is displeased with one. So one should think that Lord’s happiness is one’s happiness and vice versa. One should have the spirit of oneness in both. “I and God are one.” One should recognise and experience the harmony of the two. What is the path followed by the modern devotees? They merely follow their selfish devotion. They are obsessed with their self interest. But God is the embodiment of love and it is present in everybody and one should not obstruct the divine love. One must share the divine love and that is the will of God.

Divine Discourse November 21, 1987There are innumerable people, not only in Bharath but also elsewhere, whose lives are examples of transformation into virtuous persons by inculcating good thoughts. Long ago there lived a person in England who earned his livelihood by writing the addresses on envelops. His heart was filled with the continuous remembering of the Lord’s name. Every time he returned the envelope after filling the address he would say, “God bless you!’; and at other times he would say, “God is great!” or “Trust in God!” His life became miserable day by day. His life took good turn and improved overtime as he had always nurtured good thoughts. In due course he became the prime minister of Britain and he is James Mc Donald! There are many such people all around the world. But some do not have the good fortune of even believing in such happenings. Belief too is a kind of good fortune!! Only fortunate ones have faith in such good things. There are people who believe in history as it is written. In today’s world too, there are innumerable people whose lives endorse the fact that good thoughts are basis for noble life.

Divine Discourse November 19, 1999Sachi devi scolded her son Chaitanya. "You must marry, then I will be happy. If you do not marry according to the mother's wishes it is of no use". But Chaitanya said, "Mother, I do not want to marry, but I will do it to fulfill your wish. But you will not be happy. If I am not happy, how can you be happy". Then he married. He married Lakshmi. He went on his journey to Bangladesh and Lakshmi died fasting. Sachi devi felt very unhappy. "He did not want it but i got him married and ultimately we had to face this". So she felt very unhappy. Chaitanya came back from Bangladesh. "Amma, you should have listened to what I said". If we do something against our wishes, what is the use.

Divine Discourse June 20, 1996 - Chinna Katha (Short Story)The character of Dhruva in Maha Bhagavata is familiar to all of you. He is a five year old boy who does not have any worldly knowledge. By his mere strong faith instilled by his mother and strengthened by the Divine sage Narada he went to the forest and did serious penance for seeing God. We have to have faith in elders’ words. Dhruva’s faith in the divine sage Narada has resulted in his having the vision of God. But he is a child. When Lord Vishnu appeared before him and asked what does he want, he said” Oh Lord! You could know where I am and you came to this thick forest. Do you not know what I want? God is not unwise. He is the wisest of the wise. God said ‘I know where you are and what your wish is. But I have a definite method. The proper study of mankind is man. Thought, word and action should be in conformity. Only then I can fulfill your desire.’ You at your home said that you would pray and ask God to bless you so that you can sit in your father’s lap. Accordingly, you did penance. But you are not asking for what you thought first. I need to put you through the test to confirm what you are aspiring for. Dhruva said “Oh Lord! My original wish is like asking for a valueless glass piece. But the vision of yours is like a diamond. How fortunate I am to get a diamond while searching for a glass piece! So I do not want a glass piece”. God said “In your thought, word and deed, two are on the same line but you’re asking (word) is different. OK two in majority are same. So I give you the boon to go and rule the kingdom”. For everything God sees the unity in thought word and deed. Otherwise He does not like it. See! Even after doing such a rigorous penance and getting the vision of Lord Vishnu Dhruva could not obtain liberation. This is because of his word being different than thought and action. So, speech is to be used very carefully. Word is the son of mind. Mind tends to be with many impurities. Son may get the qualities of parent. Actually mind should have got the qualities of divine nature. Sometimes the child does not get the qualities of the parent. Prahlada is a great devotee. Father Hiranyakashapu is the evil one. Prahlada is devoted to Lord Narayana whereas Hiranyakashapu hates Narayana. Hiranyakashapu is the one who believes in external form and name whereas Prahlada is not the one who is misguided by the illusions of the external world. Forms and names exist. But we have to see beyond those. This body is mortal.

So, put efforts in chanting the name of the Lord. People may say that when you go to Sai Baba, there is nothing but bhajan. Realise that there is nothing greater than bhajan. What bliss is there in bhajans! What a demonstration of oneness it is when a myriad throats join in uttering the name of God! The vibrations emanating from them make the heart vibrant. If you sing alone in your shrine, the vibrations return to you as reaction. But in community singing, what you have is not a reaction but a wave of vibrations. They enter into the atmosphere and purify the polluted air. The atmosphere today is polluted by bad thoughts and feelings. When you sing the glory of God, the bad germs in the air are destroyed and the air gets purified by a treatment with anti-biotics as it were. Bhajans are Therefore, supremely valuable. It has been said that in the Kali Age them is no greater spiritual practice than chanting the name of the Lord. Let one remember the name of Rama at the time of passing, whether he is a millionaire or a pauper, whether he is a scholar or an illiterate. The word and the mind are futile in their attempts to understand the Divine. By singing together there is every possibility for one’s devotion to blossom and to reach out to everyone. Collective singing is the noblest of all. It was Guru nanak who started ‘bhajans’, the collective and community singing. Amongst all services, the service of community singing will forever find a place in the hearts of the listeners. Persons might not meet each other on a path, but in community singing, their speech, their hearts and their sound unify and merge in the singing. One thought, one vision and one action, we need to consider all the three as one. Then we would not fall into any danger. To teach such profound lesson, Shivaratri is observed. Shivaratri emphasises on Unity. This is the truth. Shivaratri symbolises such truth. “People may say a myriad thing, but what we see is only one”. On this night, there would be some moments. We go on doing bhajans. While doing that, one thought emerges. We would derive the bliss out of these bhajans. This bliss takes a shape. It adorns the form of non-dualism. This very non-dual form merges into the Atma. Why did they ask you to do Bhajans all night? Bhajans were done to stop the wavering mind and disturbed imaginations and to know the innate divine nature. Some sit in bhajans and discuss worldly matters. You should not get close to such people. Consider, for example, chorus singing like in group singing of bhajans. On such occasions, everyone must maintain sruthi or tonal purity. Even in a small group, if one singer goes off-key it would not be pleasing to the ear. Thus, discipline is required even in singing.Divine Discourses, 19 June 1996

Sugar is the root cause for Cancer - Satya Sai SpeaksTill date no doctor has been able to fathom the reason for the occurrence of cancer. One can know the cause upon pondering on it properly. Some might say that eating beetle leaves causes cancer; some say that smoking cigarettes and beedis causes cancer, yet others say that pollution causes cancer—all these contribute to cancer but are not the primary reason for causing cancer. When deeply enquired one finds that the real reason for occurrence of cancer is –sugar! Commercial sugar is made out of many chemicals. Powder of the bones is one of them. This content gets lodged in any part of the body causing a particular block. Blood has two types of cells namely the red blood cells and the white blood cells. Clogging of the white blood corpuscles at a particular point is the spot for cancer. This condition is called as “Lukoma”. This is the most important ingredient of cancer. In this lukoma the primary disadvantage of sugar, the chemical, adds up. Doctors today say that people who eat beetle leaves or those that smoke get cancer. But aren’t there many who do not do either but are still affected by cancer? The pollutants in air, water and in food only aid the cancer, but the primary cause for its occurrence is sugar. In olden days, the sugar was not decorated with such false make-ups. People used to use jaggery or powdered jaggery and were never affected by such diseases. But today everything is polluted and is artificial. Resorting to dubious ways to amass wealth and mint money, people are inviting such dangerous diseases. What for is the money when man himself is not there?
