Why Compression gear should be in your running wardrobe
Welcome to this week’s edition of Run Talk SA, I’m David Katz, Mr Active. I can’t believe that it’s already just over a week since the 90th edition of the Comrades Marathon. This week we’re just over a week away from Comrades Marathon, the 2015 edition, of course it is an Up run. We talked about this last week with Brad, I did attempt the Comrades up run two years ago. Wasn’t in great form on race day and made it 71km feeling horrible for the last 20km. Great experience, unfortunately didn’t finish. I will be back, but someone who will be back this year and someone I’ve done a lot of running with since I re-immigrated to Jo’burg, moved away when I was about 3 years old, came back here in 2006. I’ve done a lot of running since 2006 with just a couple of men, one of them, Matthew van Wyngaardt, wasn’t running very far at that stage but he’s about to attempt his fifth Comrades in a row.

How to run a sub 3 hour marathon with Arnold Geerdts
What does it take to run a marathon in under 3 hours? For many of us just finishing a marathon is an incredible achievement, running a sub 3 hour marathon is a super human achievement.
South African TV and sporting personality Arnold Geerdts has run 63 sub 3 hour marathons. That is not a typo. Sixty three sub three hour marathons, stretching over 4 decades.
Less than 40 people have run sub 3 hour marathons in 5 decades and Arnie is on a mission to become the first South African to achieve that incredible feat. That means running a marathon in under 3 hours in the 1970’s, 1980’s, 1990’s, 2000’s and 2010’s.
He came perilously close to doing it at the Boston Marathon this year as well as the Cape Town Marathon. He is however training for another onslaught early in 2015. Read more

Alleged Comrades Marathon Cheat Does It Again in 2014
In a previous episode of Run Talk SA we chatted about some very irregular Comrades Marathon splits that pointed to, in our opinion, a back of the pack Comrades Marathon cheat. There have been numerous incidents of cheating at the Comrades Marathon over the years from doping to a set of twins running half the race each and bagging a Comrades Marathon gold medal. It seems that back of the pack cheating is becoming more and more prevalent at the Comrades Marathon. We are not saying every one of them cheated, but in 2013 there were just over 30 runners that missed one or more of the timing mats along the route. In 2014 more than 90 did.Six weeks after the 2014 Comrades Marathon it has come to our attention that runner that we first spoke about, race number 25058, Kitty Chutergon is once again involved in some very irregular goings on.Will the real Kitty Chutergon please stand upBelow are a few photographs that were taken by Action Photo on Comrades Marathon race day this year. As you can see even though the numbers are the same, it is definitely not the same runner running in number 25058. READ MORE Read more

2014 Comrades Marathon Postmortem with Race Director Rowyn James
It’s been a couple of days since the 2014 Comrades Marathon and now that the proverbial dust has settled. If you ran on Sunday your legs are probably more painful today than they were yesterday. It was a pretty disappointing weekend for me. I came down with a sore throat on Saturday and then woke up on Sunday morning as sick as a dog. As difficult a decision as it was to make, I decided that I would not run feeling like that. It was just too dangerous. I run to stay healthy, not to run the Comrades Marathon. If I had run on Sunday it would have been to the detriment of my health. It was just too risky. The race will be there next year, I need to make sure I am too.I thought it would be appropriate to catch up with Comrades Marathon race director Rowyn James on this week on Run Talk SA to chat about the 89th running of this iconic race.
