Unpacking Meat Alternatives: Are They Healthier Than Their Animal-based Counterparts?

Meat alternatives have witnessed a remarkable transformation in recent years. From meatless chicken fillets to vegan duck, new products are frequently appearing on supermarket shelves. A study by the Vegan Society in 2021 found that one in five people reported to have reduced the amount of meat they were eating… but are these meat substitutes healthier than actual meat? Perhaps public concerns about ultra-processed foods and the cost-of-living crisis are driving people away from meat alternatives? In today’s episode, let’s find out! For this debate, I’m delighted to be joined by two award-winning nutrition professionals – Louise Durrant who is Quorn Foods’ Nutrition Communications Manager and industry nutritionist Claire Baseley. Louise Durrant is a Registered Dietitian and Nutrition Communications Manager at Quorn Foods. She holds both a BSc in Nutrition & Dietetics and a PhD in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Surrey. Louise was a recipient of the Nutrition Society’s Rising Star Award in 2021 and is currently also Co-Director of the European Nutrition Leadership Platform (ENLP) Essentials Programme. At Quorn Foods, Louise is responsible for the planning and implementation of the Quorn Nutrition communications with relevant healthcare, research and nutrition professionals, including the dissemination of new research. Louise also leads on partnerships with health-related organisations and workforce nutrition education, and she supports the wider business in nutrition-related communications. Claire Baseley is a Registered Nutritionist and freelance consultant to the food industry and one-to-one clients. Winner of the FDF Nutritionist of the Year award, Claire is an expert in creating corporate nutrition strategy for commercial businesses from start-ups to multinationals, with strong influencing skills that evoke meaningful change, putting public health front and centre. With over 20 years of experience, Claire has worked in regulatory, food manufacturing, food service and retail environments including the Food Standards Agency, Heinz, Finnebrogue and Bidfood. She now works with freelance clients including Ella’s Kitchen, Selfridges, and Pip and Nut as well as individuals. Burns care: What value does a dietitian bring?

In today’s interview episode, Corrine chats to Registered Dietitian Tig Bridge all about a really interesting area of dietetics, burns care. Tig's extensive experience including working with burns survivors in the NHS and at The Katie Piper Foundation rehabilitation service, coupled with her roles lecturing on this subject, make her a perfect guest to explore the role that dietitians play in this area. Tig is a busy mum of 2 children and one springer spaniel (Welly). She is also an experienced clinical dietitian, having worked in the NHS since 2011 and in the field of Burns and complex wounds since 2013. Currently, she is seconded to a strategic role, as an Essential Nutrition Matron, at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and juggles mum-life alongside her part-time NHS role. In addition to her NHS work, Tig has lectured at a number of British Universities, consults for The Katie Piper Foundation Rehabilitation service and written for publication in Complete Nutrition. Tig has contributed to national and international burn guideline development and often links with American and European dietetic burn colleagues to enhance collaborative learning. Big Dietetic Debate: Should Bariatric Surgery Abroad be Allowed?

In this episode, we are delighted to be joined by Consultant Bariatric Surgeon and Sunday Times best-selling author, Dr Andrew Jenkinson. Dr Jenkinson works in the NHS at University College London Hospital as well as privately. Big Dietetic Debate: Free School Meals - where are we now and what more still needs to be done?

In today’s debate episode we’ll be discussing free school meals: where are we now and what more still needs to be done. As we’ve started the new school year, it’s one that sees all primary children in London receiving free school meals for a year in response to the cost-of-living crisis. In this episode, we talk to Isabel Rice, a registered dietitian and London food poverty campaigner coordinator at Sustain, and Dayna Brackley, a senior food policy consultant working on child health and nutrition at Bremner & co to discuss the role that school meals play in improving the health and quality of life of our future generation. We look at what’s currently being done to ensure that children get the energy and nutrition they need for their school day, and we also discuss how the cost-of-living crisis in the UK has affected the quality of school foods and whether free school meals are fully compliant with the school food standards. Dayna is a Senior Food Policy Consultant at Bremner & Co, a small organisation working on child health and nutrition. Big Dietetic Debate – Should we be concerned about ultra-processed foods?

In today’s debate episode, we’ll be discussing ultra-processed foods. Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are a hot topic of conversation at the moment, not only in the nutrition world but also in the media – Everything from their definition to whether we should be cutting them out seems to be up for debate. So, following the publication of the British Nutrition Foundation’s position statement and SACN’s position statement on processed foods and health, we’re taking some time to dig into this topic with two experts - the BNF’s Nutrition Communications Manger Bridget Benelam and Registered Dietitian Dr Duane Mellor. Dr Duane Mellor is a double award-winning registered dietitian and science communicator. They are the Aston Medical School lead for Nutrition and Evidence-Based Medicine. Having a background in clinical dietetics supporting people living with diabetes they moved into medical education when joining Aston University as well as being the Associate Dean for Public Engagement in the College of Health and Life Sciences. In this role they works to support high quality science and health communication alongside the wider engagement of communities in designing and developing healthcare programmes. Duane has a keen interest in helping the people understand the science behind health related claims, so they can make more informed decisions about their own wellbeing. They are experienced in discussing a wide range of health topics across a range of media, from print through to television and radio. Bridget Benelam BSc MSc, Nutrition Communications Manager. After a BSc in Biochemistry (University of Manchester), Bridget studied for an MSc in Human Nutrition (King’s College London). In today's episode, Corrine is delighted to be chatting to Ellie Bain, senior nutritionist at Gousto, about being a registered dietitian in the food industry. Ellie is a registered dietitian working as Senior Nutritionist at Gousto. After studying nutrition and dietetics at King's College London, she always had the intention of working in the food industry, rather than take the clinical route. She is a foodie who loves to cook and is passionate about making it easier for everyone to eat a healthier diet. Ellie started her career at Gousto as an intern, working in the recipe development team, she then became a recipe developer, focusing on healthier recipes and ranges and suggesting tips to make everything a bit healthier too (like reducing salt and adding veg). Now, as health and nutrition has become even more of a focus for Gousto she is full time nutritionist covering everything from nutritional analysis, health claims, PR and comms, reformulation, recipe guidelines and longer term health strategy. Providing culturally appropriate dietetic advice in South Asian communities With Fareeha Jay, RD

This episode coincides with South Asian Heritage Month which runs from 18th July to 17th August every year in the UK and is an opportunity to celebrate, commemorate and educate about South Asian Culture and history. Our guest today is Fareeha Jay RD. Fareeha Jay is an anthropologist turned Dietitian based in Plymouth. She has been working as a Diabetes Specialist in the NHS for the last 6 years. Delivering educational sessions to people newly diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. Fareeha has a specialist interest in South Asian diets and provides specialist advice to South Asians across the globe. She is extremely passionate about providing the best available nutrition advice to the people with South Asian background which is what led her to develop the South Asian Eatwell Guide. It is now widely being used in many NHS trusts and various charity organisations. She has expertise in healthy eating and sustainable diets for ethnic minority groups. She is also a dietitian with a high social media profile and uses evidence-based nutrition to support communication messages to the public, again focusing on ethnic minority groups, regularly featuring in print, broadcast, and social media. Fareeha Jay has a social media following from over 99 countries across the globe. She has built up a following of more than 700,000 on social media platforms. She has the experience of conducting talks and workshops to schools, and community groups organisations like with Diabetes UK and Alzheimer’s research. Some of her recent work entailed talks on sustainable eating, planetary diet, immune optimisation, and healthy eating on a budget. Big Dietetic Debate with The Food Foundation: Do you have to be wealthy to eat well?

In today’s debate episode we’ll be discussing the question, do you have to be wealthy to eat well? In the midst of the cost of living crisis we’re keen to find out more about the current state of the UK and consider the impact of rising bills and food costs on food insecurity. We’ll also touch on how we as dietitians and nutrition professionals, can help promote a healthier, more sustainable diet, that doesn’t break the bank. At the end of June, the Broken Plate Report was published which considers, amongst other things, the affordability of a healthy diet. The figures show that the most deprived fifth of the UK would need to spend a startling 50% of their disposable income on food to have a healthy diet as per the government recommendations. To discuss today’s debate question, I’m delighted to welcome two experts in the area. The author of the Broken Plate report and Policy Research Manager at The Food Foundation, Shona Goudie is here alongside the Food Foundation’s Senior Business and Investor Engagement Manager, Rebecca Tobi. Rebecca joined the Food Foundation in January 2020, leading on the Peas Please initiative which has obtained pledgers from over 100 organisations and businesses in the UK to sell and serve more vegetables. These days she manages our business and investor engagement team, with oversight of our work engaging food businesses, investors and policy-makers with the need to transition the UK towards a more sustainable and healthy food system. Rebecca is a Registered Nutritionist (RNutr, Public Health) with a background in science communication, joining the Food Foundation from the Nutrition Society. Prior to moving into public health nutrition and obtaining a MSc in Nutrition for Global Health at the London School of Hygiene and Medicine, Rebecca worked in business engagement within the marketing and tech sectors. Shona joined the Food Foundation in 2019 and has worked on a range of projects at the Food Foundation including working on policy and evidence for our high profile children’s food campaigns, and consulting on the Government-commissioned National Food Strategy, She currently leads on our dietary inequalities work and food insecurity monitoring. Shona is a Registered Associate Nutritionist with a background in biomedical science and clinical nutrition. What are the misconceptions about pre-conception and fertility nutrition? With Ro Huntriss, RD

Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) in dietetics and the role of the BDA

For today’s interview episode, Corrine is joined by the British Dietetic Association (BDA) CEO Liz Stockley and co-chair of the BDA’s equality, diversity & inclusion committee Susan Price. In today’s episode, we’ll be discussing the vital topic of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) in dietetics and considering the role and work of the BDA in addressing all forms of inequality in the profession. After 19 years working in senior leadership roles in New Zealand, Liz Stockley returned to the UK, joining the BDA As CEO mid-2022. The BDA has a growing membership, currently over 10,500 strong and as well as being the professional body for dietitians is also a trade union. Prior to this appointment Liz was CEO of General Practice New Zealand and was on the board of a number of high-profile organisations. She has an MBA from Massey University and received her Chartership from the Institute of Directors in New Zealand in 2021. Liz is passionate about equality and about developing future leaders. Susan Price was born and brought up in North Wales and it was while at school and doing her GCSEs that she knew that she wanted to be a Dietitian. After graduating from Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen in 1995, Susan got her first graduate post in a NHS acute hospital trust. She has worked in a range of adult acute and community posts, as a sports Dietitian and as a research Dietitian. Susan was the Head of Nutrition and Dietetics at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust for over 10 years where she also undertook her clinical caseload in the areas of ICU and gastroenterology. In 2020 Susan was appointed to the role of Deputy Director for Health well-being and Inclusion and continues to practise within ICU as a Dietitian. As we know, the management of coeliac disease requires a strict GF diet, but with the cheapest loaf of GF bread being over 7x more expensive than the least expensive non-gluten loaf and the current cost of living crisis, the question of whether GF foods should be accessible on prescription is an important one. To discuss this topic, we're delighted to welcome the brilliant coeliac dietitian, Cristian Costas Batlle. Cristian is a gastroenterology dietitian specialising in coeliac disease and works at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He currently runs the dietitian-led coeliac service in his hospital with the support of the gastroenterologists and he built this service in 2019. In 2020 he was awarded with the national GUTS UK and Dr. Falk dietitian recognition award for improving patient care in gastroenterology through the dietitian-led coeliac service he has constructed in Bradford. In 2021 he was also a Complete Nutrition double award winner as Clinical Nutrition Professional of the Year and Social Media Personality of the Year for his work in the field of coeliac disease. His particular areas of interest are coeliac disease, gluten-related disorders, irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease. Spotlight on inflammatory bowel disease & importance of early diagnosis with Crohn’s & Colitis UK

In today’s interview episode, we’re talking all things inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including discussions around the importance of an early diagnosis, how the multidisciplinary team works together in this area and the common misconceptions our guests hear about IBD. This episode will also explore the work and research of Crohn’s and Colitis UK – a UK-based charity that aims to bring awareness, support, and advice to those affected by these conditions. To discuss this topic, I am delighted to be joined by two brilliant HCPs in the world of IBD – Rachel Ainley and Isobel Mason. Rachel is the Head of Research and Evidence at Crohn’s & Colitis UK, the UK’s leading charity for Crohn’s and Colitis. She leads their work across evidence and insight, research and quality improvement. Before joining Crohn’s & Colitis UK she spent three years working for the British Embassy in Beijing where she was responsible for collaboration between the UK and China on health, drawing on her background as a GP. Isobel Mason works as a Nurse Consultant in Gastroenterology, at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust leading liver and digestive health nursing services. The department is one of the busiest advanced and specialist nursing services in the Trust and involves 36 nurse specialists and practitioners working as part of the multidisciplinary team in all areas of gastroenterology, nutrition, hepatology and endoscopy nursing. Isobel leads the service, supporting and developing nurses and making strategic decisions about improving and advancing nursing practice. Her clinical role previously included busy inflammatory bowel disease nursing service which is now run day-to-day by three other nurse specialists. Isobel also runs clinics for patients with dyspepsia, coeliac disease, iron deficiency anaemia and a family history of colorectal cancer. She also works alongside other nurse consultants within the Trust developing frameworks and educational events for those in advanced and specialist roles. Isobel was chair of the RCN Crohn’s and Colitis special interest group until January 2009 and in this role represented the RCN in the development of the original Quality Care Standards for IBD care and published the first national audit of IBD nursing activity. She was chair of the RCN Gastrointestinal Nursing Forum from May 2011 until May 2019 and her work with the Forum resulted in the RCN Award of Merit in 2018. In 2016, she started a secondment with Crohns & Colitis UK, to lead and shape their IBD nursing strategy. Launched with an impactful campaign ‘More nurses – Better care’ Isobel’s role involves national campaigning, supporting nurses currently in post across the UK, developing career frameworks and case load modelling in advanced and specialist practice and patient co-production. The aim is that all those living with IBD have access to a suitably qualified nurse specialist. The Big Dietetic Debate: How do we communicate the science of probiotics to consumers?

For today’s big dietetic debate, we're delighted to be joined by registered nutritionist and regulatory affairs consultant Sue Oldreive. Having been a consultant in this area for 11 years and worked with people such as the probiotic company Symprove, Sue is the perfect guest for this episode as we explore why it’s so challenging to communicate the science of probiotics to consumers. We’ll dig into why the word probiotic is considered a health claim and the impact that this has on companies marketing products, on consumers seeking out these products and on healthcare professionals advising patients. Sue became a consultant in Nutrition and Regulatory affairs 11 years ago – after working for a Global direct sales company, UK retailer and for the UK Government as a Nutritionist and Food Scientist. Her work has been hugely varied from sampling grass in Yorkshire through to briefing Ministers, being the company spokesperson on nutrition and promoting nutrition and product training with many companies. Nowadays, Sue uses her knowledge to help clients find their balance with marketing messages, as well as creating and managing evidence bases for compliance. For today’s big dietetic debate episode, we are thrilled to be joined by two expert guests as we ask, is there a role for ketogenic diets in a clinical setting? Our guests both work within the field of ketogenic diets; one as a Senior Research Fellow and Specialist Paediatric Dietitian at UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, and the other as an advanced clinical practitioner, leading the Ketogenic Diet service at Royal Manchester Childrens Hospital. It's our pleasure to welcome to the Dietitian Café, Dr Natasha Schoeler and Victoria Whiteley. Natasha is a Senior Research Fellow and Specialist Paediatric Dietitian at Great Ormond Street. She specialises in the area of ketogenic diet therapies for neurological conditions and has worked on genetic laboratory and bioinformatics work, clinical trials, meta-analysis and qualitative research. She completed her PhD on genetic predictors of response to ketogenic diets in 2014 and I’m the Founder and Chair of the Ketogenic Dietitians Research Network. Victoria is a Dietitian working in an advanced clinical practitioner role, leading the Ketogenic Diet service at Royal Manchester Childrens Hospital. She has 19 years of experience within the NHS, specialising in Ketogenic diet therapy for the last 11 years since she set up the service at the Children's hospital. The service is one of the biggest in the UK supporting children and young people with drug-resistant epilepsy and those with underlying neurometabolic conditions. In addition to her clinical role, she is also heavily involved in research, and is co-Chair of the ketogenic dietitian's research network with Natasha. In this episode, we shine a light on the dietetic speciality of inherited metabolic disorders. We sit down to explore the range of patients and conditions that dietitians manage in this speciality including phenylketonuria (PKU) and galactosaemia. We unpack the importance of diet in inherited metabolic disorders and discuss the advancements in management over recent years. Joining me today to delve into this topic are specialist inherited metabolic disorders dietitians Louise Robertson and Sarah Howe. In 2015 Sarah and Louise set up a dietetic blog called ‘Dietitian’s Life’ and have been working together ever since. The blog covers a mixture of general nutrition and PKU and has led to some amazing opportunities; in fact, they now have a regular column in the NHD magazine! Sarah has been working in Inherited Metabolic Disorders since 2010 and has never looked back. She qualified as a Dietitian in 2008, after completing a Biology Degree at York University, followed by a Post Graduate Diploma in Dietetics at Leeds Met University. Prior to this current role she worked in gastroenterology, oncology and haematology. Sarah has an interest in Glycogen Storage Disorders, Tyrosinaemia and Alstrom Syndrome and looks after these cohorts of patients in her role. In her spare time, she is a busy Mum of 3 children, loves to exercise, run, journal and is learning to play the piano. Louise is a specialist dietitian in Inherited Metabolic Disorders in Birmingham where she helped set up the service in 2008. She qualified as a dietitian in 2002 from the University of Surrey. Louise is also the dietitian for the Galactosaemia Support Group in the UK and she is on the committee for the dietitians group of the British Intertied Metabolic Diseases Group (BIMDG). The Big Dietetic Debate: Calories on Menus – Is it helpful or a hinderance?

In today’s episode we’re discussing the somewhat controversial legislation around calorie labelling on menus; unpacking the origin of this law and the evidence behind it. We’ll also explore the law’s impacts on public health and the food industry, as well as the consequences for those living with an eating disorder. To discuss this topic, I’m delighted to be joined by specialist dietitian and clinical advisor at the UK’s eating disorders charity BEAT, Sarah Fuller, and advanced specialist dietitian in obesity and bariatric surgery, Deepti Loomba. Sarah is a specialist eating disorders dietitian who has worked with children and young people with eating disorders for over 15 years. Sarah is a clinical advisor to BEAT the national eating disorders charity. Sarah has two research interests and has published papers in both areas, veganism in eating disorders and feeding under restraint in inpatient settings. Sarah is received funding from NHS England for her research and is currently working at Imperial College London for this. Sarah was also placed on the British Dietetic Association’s Roll of Honour in 2020 for her research into feeding under restraint. Sarah has a number of teaching positions at the Royal College of Paediatrics education regarding eating disorders, at Health Education England’s national eating disorders teaching programme and an honorary contract at the University of Northampton for their Child and Adolescent Mental Health master’s programme. Deepti is a specialist in weight management, hormone-driven conditions and Bariatric Surgery. She has worked as a Senior Dietitian and Weight Management Specialist Dietitian in a complex weight loss program where she supports other clinicians in ensuring that we continue as a team to provide optimal delivery of dietetic care to individuals. She has helped many individuals to better manage their type 2 diabetes, cholesterol levels, blood pressure and supports others in preventing and better managing their chronic conditions. She has achieved exceptional results as she believes it is not a one method that fits all as weight loss stems further than just to simply ‘eat less and move more’. She provides personalised care and shapes others knowledge to improve various markers of health. Deepti’s passion is to empower individuals to gain knowledge and confidence to manage their health conditions and to sustain habits for life long. She finds it incredibly rewarding to improve an individual quality of life and to help others reach their desirable goals. As a result of her progressive career in the NHS, digital healthcare and private sector, she has extensive knowledge in dietary counselling and supporting various conditions. She frequently supports those in achieving sustainable weight loss in the following areas: emotional eating, type 2 diabetes (inc. remission), polycystic ovarian syndrome, plant – based diet, metabolic diseases and can adapt to a cultural diet. She also maintains an active lifestyle and completed an additional qualification to become a personal trainer. To discuss this topic, We're delighted to be joined by a Registered Nutritionist and Health Improvement Lead at The Fire Fighters Charity, Dr Greg Lessons. Greg’s unique academic and professional background prepared him perfectly for this role, as his MSc and PhD research resulted in the first UK fire station-based nutrition interventions, the first dietary assessment tool validated for UK firefighters and the first firefighter body composition reference charts. Greg is a Registered Nutritionist and currently has a full-time professional role with The Fire Fighters Charity as Health Improvement Lead. He was awarded his PhD in April 2021 and prior to this, spent three years as the first full-time nutritionist in the UK fire service (London Fire Brigade). Before this, Greg served London as a full-time firefighter for 17 years. He was awarded the student prize for ‘best original communication’ at the Nutrition Society Winter Conference in 2017, where he presented his first abstract. In 2019, Greg was named ‘Nutritionist of the year’ by the Caroline Walker Trust, following which he won the Public Sector Catering ‘Health and Nutrition Award’ for his work in the delivery of a clear health and nutrition strategy in the London Fire Brigade. After many of our dietitian listeners will have recently renewed for another few years with the HCPC, continued professional development (CPD) may well be at the forefront of your mind. In today’s episode, we sit down with two people - Donna Fielder & Jen Fielder who are actively working to make CPD a hassle-free task for allied health professionals. We’ll dive into the world of CPD, discussing if there are gold standard methods for recording, the main barriers to undertaking CPD and hearing our guests’ top tips for building a CPD portfolio to be proud of. Donna is a content producer for Julia Can Help, a platform designed to help allied health professionals (AHPs) record, reflect and report on their CPD. As part of this role, she's interviewed a wide range of AHP’s about their CPD experiences, and how this has supported their career progression. Jen graduated as a dietitian from the University of Surrey in 2002, before working for Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust at Addenbrookes Hospital. She moved to the south coast in 2003 to take up a position in the newly created Community Nutrition Support Dietetic Team. Over the years, she has progressed to become the Team Lead for the Community Nutrition Support Dietetic Team and the team has now expanded to provide community nutrition support services across East Sussex by a team of Dietitians and Dietetic Assistants. More recently, Jen has been successful in securing a secondment as Interim Professional Lead for the Nutrition and Dietetic Department at East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust. In today’s episode, we're joined by a dietitian whose career journey breaks the norm for dietitians - Lucy Jones. Lucy is Vice President Clinical at Oviva, a company transforming the way people access care through their technology. By background, she is an experienced dietitian, having worked in numerous London hospitals and specialises in managing obesity and metabolic syndrome. She's also had many television presenting roles including Channel 4’s The Food Hospital, ITV’s The Alan Titchmarsh Show, BBC1’s Eat Well for Less and Channel 4’s Sugar Rush with Jamie Oliver. In her position as a media spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association, she regularly appears on television, radio and in the written press including on Sky News, the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. In 2013, she was named the BDA’s media spokesperson of the Year and Nutrition and Health’s Nutrition writer and Broadcaster of the year. After graduating with 1st class honours in Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Lucy went on to complete a Masters in Clinical Research with the University of Manchester. She has also undertaken significant postgraduate training in behaviour change in order to support patients with effective lifestyle changes. In today’s episode Harriet is joined by Jennifer Low and Priya Tew. We explore the diet trends taking off this summer, their origins and whether there is any truth behind them. We’ll discuss with our guests why they think summer diet trends have become so popular, the influence of social media and whether they think certain demographics of people are more prone to following these diets. We will also touch upon the impact of COVID-19 on people’s susceptibility to summer diet trends this year. Jen has been a registered dietitian for over 15 years. She specialises in eating disorders and disordered eating, as well as bariatric surgery, weight management (and intuitive eating) and irritable bowel syndrome. She works solely in private practice now and within that capacity, she also consults for an NHS eating disorder service. Jen's background is a degree in Psychology, MSc in Nutrition and PgDip in Dietetics, so has naturally gravitated towards the mental health aspect of dietetic therapy. Priya is a registered dietitian with wide-ranging experience both within the NHS and as a freelance dietitian. She is probably best known from the BBC’s Eat Well for Less and has also had a number of other TV appearances including for Channel 4’s Inside the Superbrands and Embarrassing Bodies. Priya is the author of two books, ‘The Dash Diet and ‘The Complete Low FODMAP Diet Plan’, which she wrote during lockdown, and in 2020 she gave the annual Elsie Widdowson Lecture. Priya likes to offer an inventive and fresh approach to nutrition. We’ll talk to Jen and Priya about the challenges their patients are faced with when trying to follow a more balanced diet and discuss why temporary diet fixes have become popular. In today’s big dietetic debate, we’re looking at Natasha’s Law and considering how we protect the public from food allergens. We're delighted to the joined an expert in children’s cow’s milk allergy, dietitian Lydia Collins-Hussey and the founder of Tiny Tots Nutrition, Paula Hallam. Lydia graduated from the University of Plymouth with BSc (Hons) Dietetics in 2013 and started her dietetic career at Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and moved quickly into a paediatrics ward, where her passion for food allergy started. She worked for four years at Oviva UK Ltd in the CMPA programme where she went onto win the Barry Kay Award in Allied Health at the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology 2019 for her work in NHS Grampian. She later joined AllergyUK in May 2021 as a Dietetic Advisor and more recently moved into a research allergy role at the University of Glasgow. Outside of work, she is the secretary for the BDA Food Allergy Specialist Group. Paula is a Specialist Paediatric Dietitian and founder of Tiny Tots Nutrition. She is passionate about helping families of children with food allergies to navigate the journey of managing their food allergies safely and providing optimal nutrition for growth and development. She has been a paediatric dietitian for over 20 years, gaining a wide range of experience working in many different settings such as charities, private practice, hospitals including Great Ormond Street Hospital and Evelina Children’s Hospital. Personalised nutrition is a controversial topic, but experts argue that the science is there! To coincide with DNA Day on 26th April, in today’s episode we’re talking to personalised nutrition expert Rachel Clarkson. Rachel is a Specialist Dietitian in the science of Nutrigenomics, best known as The DNA Dietitian. With COVID travel restrictions lifting, dietitians may be thinking about their options of working in a different country. For today’s episode, we’ve brought together two leading UK trained dietitians to explain their journey of emigrating and working as dietitians in Australia. I’m delighted to be joined today by Adele Hug and Peter Collins to discuss the transition of UK to Oz. Adele is a UK trained Specialist Oncology Dietitian with a varied career across the NHS, charity, private and community settings. She is a committee member for the UK for the Oncology Group of EFAD (European Federation of Associations of Dietitians). After having returned home to Perth, Western Australia in 2021, she is currently working freelance in digital health for Onkohealth and with World Cancer Research Fund UK within their survivorship service whilst studying to join Dietitians Australia's Accredited Practicing Dietitian Programme. Peter is a UK trained dietitian and completed his PhD in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton. For the last 10 years, he has been living and working in Brisbane, Australia and has worked as a Senior Lecturer in Dietetics. Currently, he works as a Senior Clinical Dietitian, and is acting Team Leader at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane. He is passionate about clinical dietetics, from education and training the next generations of dietitians through to impactful research shaping dietetic practice. Peter founded the Dietitian Network, an online community that brings together dietitians from around the world, as he was was aware of the power of networking and the impact dietitians can have when they share their expertise with colleagues. In this episode, we’ll talk to Peter and Adele about their experiences packing up their life and moving across the world. We’ll discuss the things dietitians need to consider regarding registration and how different dietetics is across the pond. The Big Dietetic Debate: IDDSI – What’s working & what more needs to be done? With Niamh Condon

The International Dysphagia Diet Standard Initiative (IDDSI) supply a framework that provides a common terminology to describe food textures and drink thicknesses for people with dysphagia. The IDDSI framework has been in place for three years and has helped dysphagia management considerably, but it has also brought several important questions to the surface. Niamh is a Dysphagia chef and set up Dining with Dignity in 2019 to provide catering and consultancy training in the healthcare sector. She has over 20 years of experience in the catering industry and has developed recipes and methods to suit dysphagia diets. She has also contributed to newspaper articles, webinars, the development of cookbooks for Cancer Research and more recently was asked by the UNESCO Patron for Child & Family Research Centre to submit a chapter in their book ‘Empathy for Ireland’. In this episode, we’ll invite Niamh to share her experience of working as a dysphagia chef and discuss the pros and cons of IDDSI. Today, we're delighted to be joined by Sue Brierley-Hobson and Rachel Gibson to explore becoming a dietitian in later life. Sue is the Head of Dietetics in the Central area of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) in North Wales, and the Professional Lead for Nutrition & Dietetics across North Wales. Rachel is a UK Registered Dietitian. She graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Nutrition and Dietetics from King’s College London in 2013 and completed her PhD in Nutritional Epidemiology at Imperial College London in 2017. In this episode we will be discussing the reasons why both Sue and Rachel switched from their previous careers to dietetics and how they found this change. Weight stigma is becoming an increasing issue in society, and HCPs should not feel judged on their ability to do their job is based on their appearance. We have brought together a leading researcher on weight stigma amongst HCPs and a dietitian with lived experience of weight stigma amongst fellow dietitians to discuss the important topic of whether there’s a place for overweight dietitians in dietetics. We're delighted to be joined Anne Wright and Stuart Flint on today’s episode. Anne Wright is a Registered Dietitian with over 27 years of international experience. She has worked in a variety of clinical roles and in academia, as a lecturer in Nutrition and Dietetics. Anne now works as a freelance dietitian/nutritionist in a range of areas including patient services, online programs, health writing and specialist projects. Dr Stuart W. Flint is Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Leeds, President of Scaled Insights and Director of Obesity UK. Stuart is also an Honorary Academic for the Office of Health Improvement and Disparities. He is Chair of the Obesity Policy Engagement Network (UK), and a contributing member to the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Obesity and APPG on a Fit and Healthy Childhood. Stuart contributes evidence to several other APPGs on health and inequalities experiences by marginalised groups and leads work nationally and internationally to highlight the pervasiveness and impact of weight stigma and discrimination. Stuart has developed interventions to reduce these stigmatising attitudes, working with governments, health systems, education, media, charities, and the general population. Stuart is also widely published in high impact journals and is regularly interviewed by media outlets. The Big Dietetic Debate: Is there a place for disability in dietetics?

Harriet is joined by Bianca Tharme-Loose and Nicky Clark on today’s episode to discuss whether there’s a place for disability in dietetics. This coincides with International Day of Disabled Persons (3rd December) and it’s also a topic which Harriet is passionate about, as she lives with several disabilities including Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome, scoliosis and hearing loss. Bianca is a specialist gastroenterology dietitian and is currently the irritable bowel syndrome lead at the trust she works at. Bianca has been employed by the NHS for nearly five years and since receiving the shielding letter she has been working solely in outpatients. Nicky Clark has worked for the NHS for over 12 years, since completing her postgraduate diploma in dietetics at Leeds. Nicky currently works as an advanced dietitian for a mental health trust in the Northeast of England and has done since the service was developed eight years ago. Nicky is involved in continual service development within her dietetic team and clinically works in a tertiary specialised neuro-rehabilitation hospital. In this episode we’ll be discussing the impact that our guest’s disabilities have had on their student training and current dietetic roles, and how disability is perceived in the workplace. The Dietitian Cafe: Unpacking The Diabetes Remission Paper

Following the recent publication of a landmark review paper exploring the dietary strategies for the remission of type 2 diabetes, we thought it would be great to get some of the researchers themselves together in the Dietitian Café to unpack the research. Harriet is joined by three of the authors of this paper, GP Dr David Unwin and Registered Dietitians Dr Duane Mellor and Dr Adrian Brown. Dr David Unwin is a fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners. He works at Norwood NHS Surgery in Southport where he has cared for the same population since 1986. To date, 105/206 of his patients with type 2 diabetes who chose a low carb approach have achieved drug-free remission. He’s published research into improving blood pressure, lipid profiles and liver function by reducing dietary carbohydrates, especially sugar. Dr Adrian Brown is a Research Fellow and Lecturer at University College London and a Senior Specialist Weight Management Dietitian with over 15 years of experience. His research centres around obesity, type 2 diabetes, bariatric surgery, weight stigma and use of low energy diets. He is an Honorary Academic at Public Health England and Vice-Chair of the Specialist Obesity Group for the BDA. Dr Duane Mellor is the Aston Medical School lead for Nutrition and Evidence-Based Medicine, and the Associate Dean for Education in the College of Health and Life Sciences. He has a background in clinical dietetics supporting people living with diabetes and moved into medical education when joining Aston University. Duane has maintained his research and practice interest in diabetes care working as a committee member of the BDA’s Diabetes Specialist Group and supporting the development of nutritional management guidelines. The Big Dietetic Debate: Do we need dietitians on the frontline?

To celebrate Allied Health Professionals Day, in this big dietetic debate, we’ll be discussing the role of dietitians in primary care. Harriet is joined by two registered dietitians Rebecca Gasche and Lisa Ledger. Rebecca has been working as an NHS dietitian for 8 years, with her specialist area being gastroenterology. More recently, she has started to incorporate her skills in Primary Care and is working towards becoming a first contact practitioner. Her role is currently split between leading on the gastroenterology/surgical services at the Countess of Chester Hospital and working in Chester South Primary Care Network, seeing patients in GP practices and developing projects to improve patient care within the primary care network. Lisa is currently a professional lead dietitian in Cornwall and works for a primary care network as a Strategic Manager. She’s been a practicing dietitian for 16 years and has been leading a community team for some time. Lisa has worked with Plymouth University and the British Dietetic Association (BDA) to investigate how Dietitians could work within primary care. She completed a study on frailty and malnutrition in primary care and following this, NHS improvement funded more work in the area. In this episode, we’ll explore the role of dietitians in primary care, discuss the need for these roles and will cover the background which led to the creation of these new roles. The Big Dietetic Debate: Diversifying Dietetics (Part 1) with Anjanee Kohli & Jasmine Carbon

Anjanee Kohli currently works for the NHS in a community paediatric setting, seeing children for various clinical needs including enteral feed management, autism, faltering growth, allergies and developmental delays. The location where she works is very culturally diverse, so she is also working on an Ethnic Diet tutorial for both staff and students which teaches about the influence of culture and religion on diets and why this is important to know when working with patients. She is passionate about disseminating nutritional information to diverse populations who it may not otherwise reach. This includes volunteering in settings such as temples, using conversational Punjabi to relay this information, writing for different publications or via her social media. She is also passionate about cooking, which includes traditional Punjabi dishes she has learnt (and is sometimes still learning) from her Mum who grew up in Punjab. She relays how to adapt traditional punjabi or Indian dishes, and not neglecting these in the pursuit of health. Jasmine Carbon is the senior specialist community lead dietitian at Guy's & St Thomas' Trust. Having worked within the NHS for over 5 years, she has amassed a wide range of experience including renal, neuro-medicine and oncology. Outside of her NHS role she is an active BDA member as the Vice Chair for BDA London Branch. Jasmine's commitment to health outside of the NHS has lead to her founding Carbon Nutrition & Dietetics. Originally Carbon Nutrition was a way to share diet advice to family and friends, but it quickly developed into a consultancy service supporting and educating individuals, schools, corporate and community groups. Louise's earlier career was spent in clinical and public health nutrition. Since completing her Masters in 2010 she has worked for charities such as The National Trust and Sustain, guiding and developing sustainable food policies and initiatives. Louise has been a guest lecturer at London Metropolitan University and was on the advisory panel for DEFRA’s Green Food Project. Louise now works freelance providing nutritional advice to individuals and food companies. At the moment she is leading the food sustainability module for Culinary Medicine UK.
