Pray that the Holy Spirit – which Jesus promises – will transform your worries into peace.5 | Transforming Your Worries• Pray like Jesus: Here’s my desire, but I also acknowledge, God, that You know best.It is part of God’s goodness and appointment that He allows the world to be susceptible to our prayers. Palm Sunday – Love Beyond Borders

Following Jesus is to allow him to make your heart much, much bigger.Palm Sunday: Love Beyond BordersSpeaker: Paul KissDate: April 5, 2020”Following Jesus is to allow him to make your heart much, much bigger.” Text: John 12:12-91 | ”Us and them” runs deeper than we think Text: John 11:45-572 | Jesus and Jerusalem: God’s Portrait of Power Text: John 12:12-19”No longer is the question the legitimation of rule, but the character of God’s rule as the gentle lamb on the throne, deconstructing human domination and oppression. We learn that human oppression is unnecessary and abhorrent to God. We are ushered into the drone room and find that the king took our coat at the door.’” – Alan Storkey, Jesus and Politics. 3 | Jesus removes our nationalism Text: John 12:20-264 | Jesus shows us God’s heart for everyone Text: John 12:27-335 | Jesus: What do you do with him? Text: John 12:34-50Reject him and maintain your current way of living?ORFollow him and embrace his new way of loving? WARMING UP1. What is it about political leaders that we love to discuss them and their ability to lead?2. When you think of political leaders, who is one person whom you admire & why?DISCUSSING AND LEARNING3. Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem, riding on a donkey, was to make a statement. What statement was he making? Read Zechariah 9:9-10 to learn more. Actually read from 9:1-10 to get an even more complete understanding.4. In John’s account of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, Jesus is challenging the nationalistic tendencies of the people. Jump over to Luke 4:14-28, especially versos 21-30. How is Jesus challenging their nationalism in this passage? What is he trying to communicate to them in both these incidents?5. Read John 12:31-33. In these verses, who is judgement for? (He says it plainly). What is Jesus’ plan for the rest of humanity, including but also beyond Israel?MAKING IT REAL6. Jesus was challenging the “us and them” tendencies of the people in Jerusalem at that time. He has been doing that to people ever since. What “us and them” tendencies is he revealing that are still in your own life? How will you respond to his desire to free you from excluding people from coming to God?7. During this time of heightened nationalistic protection, because of the pandemic, based on the example of Jesus, how would he instruct us to behave as his followers? Who should we try to help? Who should we not help?8. What benefits will result when we learn to decrease and/or eliminate our “us and them” thinking and living? 1. The next time you watch the news and listen to a political leader, consider how Jesus would instruct them, based on what we’ve learned from him in John 11-122. Make a list of those whom you still consider “other.” (It could be anyone). Ask God to help you embrace them with his love instead. Then do something tangible to that end.The post Palm Sunday – Love Beyond Borders appeared first on New Life Church. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

What might be some benefits of reciting Creeds like the Apostle’s? Drawbacks?Discussing and Learning:3. Read Acts 10:36; Romans 10:9; 2Corinthians 4:5. These contain one of the earliest Creeds of the Church. What is the Creed, or statement? What are the implications of citing this Creed even for us today?.4. In Matthew 22:34-40, Jesus cites from Deuteronomy 6:5. “God is Lord.” How does this add to your understanding from the previous question regarding the creed that states “Jesus is Lord?” Read Deut. 6:4-9 and discuss how these verses might apply to the Matthew 22 passage.5. Read Mark 12:33. Loving God, in this verse, is said to be more important than what? What would be some modern day equivalents of this verse?Making it Real:6. How do you respond to what is happening?2. Changing one’s framework is difficult, especially for groups. Why do you think that is?Discussing and Learning:3. Read Acts 10:9-16. How did God use Peter’s vision to help him reframe his thinking about who could be included in the Church? (vs. 15 – unclean was about more than just animals).4. How did Peter show that he was reframing his worldview and following God’s lead? (vs. 17-29; especially verse 28). What would be a modern equivalent to the monumental shift Peter embraced by entering the home of a non-Jewish person?5. Read Acts 11:1-3. How does the existing Church initially handle Peter’s decision to go to Cornelius’ home? What happens by 11:15-18? What lessons are there in this for us today?Making it Real:6. How willing are you to get uncomfortable in order to receive many others into our family and see them mature into fully devoted Jesus followers? Where do you draw the line? Why?8. Paul suggested 5 things you can do to help yourself and New Life reframe our framework so that we might reach many new people with the love of Jesus. The Power of Community

In a world where people feel increasingly lonely, how can we help those who are wrestling with feeling lonely have the opportunity to feel included? Join us as we conclude our “Lonely?” series. Listen as Paul Kiss unpacks 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 as we explore community and belonging. We have the amazing privilege of showing the world how to combat loneliness – through living as the body of Christ.Lonely: The Power of CommunitySpeaker: PaulKissDate: February 23, 2020We have the amazing privilege of showing the world how to combat loneliness – through living as the body of Christ. Text: 1 Corinthians 12:12-27; Ephesians 4:14-16; Philippians 2:3-4, 12-131 ¦ Community. Text: 1 Corinthians 12:12-13● Understanding ourselves: Start with community instead of the individual, vs. 12.2 ¦ Diversity. Text: 1 Corinthians 12:14-21● Understanding ourselves: Start with community instead of the individual, vs. 12.● Community defines the individual.● Our diversity only makes sense within the context of community, vs. 20.3 ¦ Unity. Text: 1 Corinthians 12:22-27● When healthy perspective is in place, (community – diversity – unity), then each person/member of the body will be cared for.● When a person feels cared for, and that they can also care for others, they will feel like they belong.“We encounter Jesus best through community. Pay attention to Jesus, the head of his body, the Church. If you do, then you cannot ignore the body, the congregation. We have the amazing privilege of showing the world how to combat loneliness – through living as the body of Christ. Understanding the importance of the body to which we belong is to see the value of community as the basis for our daily rhythms of life.” Warming Up:1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using “body” imagery to describe the church? What are some other helpful metaphors to use in describing the Church?2. A body without a head is a gruesome thing. How does the church become gruesome when it lives separated from its head – Christ?Discussing and Learning:3. Read 1 Corinthians 12:12-21 together. Paul puts the emphasis on the body first, before the individual parts. What are the implications of this emphasis, as it relates to how individualism affects the Church? (How does individualism harm the body)?4. How does the Apostle Paul suggest replying to someone who doesn’t feel like they belong to the body, (12:14-17)? As it relates to loneliness, how might this metaphor be helpful?5. Context is key. Chapters 9-11 instruct the Church to seek the benefits of others so that everyone feels like they belong to the community. How does that change the way you read chapter 12?6. Chapter 13 shows how love must be the foundation of everything we do. In a world where people feel increasingly lonely, how can living out the reality of Paul’s invitation in chapter 12, be an attractive thing to offer many people?Making it Real:7. (Individually) – 1 Corinthians 12:27 states that we are each part of the body of Christ. In light of all that this passage teaches, how well are you doing at living in such a way that the body of Christ, to which you belong, is of major importance in your life? After pondering this, share with the group as you are comfortable to do so?8. What needs to change in your life so that the body, and Christ the head, has primary importance? How could this help combat loneliness for everyone?9. This teaching places high value on community and belonging. What can we do to ensure that those who wrestle with feeling lonely have the opportunity to feel included? (Remember that we each need to be part of a mutually giving and receiving relationship to not feel lonely).1. Watch the following TED talk by Johann Hari. Consider how a healthy Christian community could fulfill everything that Hari is suggesting in his talk: [watch here]2. If you’re lonely or not, consider how placing a high commitment on being part of the Church can help both you and others. How could this also offer our world a model for experiencing a fulfilled life? The post The Power of Community appeared first on New Life Church. Hosted on Acast. For

Picture your life. Who has made an impact by being “for” you? Who have you influenced by being “for” them? Join us for a special family day weekend message as guest, Charlie Mashinter, continues our “Lonely?” series. Listen as we look at Romans 8:31-39 and explore the question: What does this look like for followers of Christ to be “for” one another and how can we live it out?ForSpeaker: Charlie MashinterDate: February 16, 2020Let’s play “for” or “against” Text: John 8:1-11 – A woman caught in adultery Text: Romans 8:31-391. Who can be against us? (vs 31)2. Who will bring a charge against us spiritually? (vs. 33)3. Who will condemn us spiritually? (vs. 34)4. Who will separate us from the love of Christ? (vs. 35)“the air of surprised relief pervades …. we look around to see who has condemned us and discover that they’ve all gone. The many things that threaten to separate you from the powerful love which reaches out through the cross and resurrection, are all beaten foes.”—NT. Wright• The truth we live in (we struggle to believe it is so)• The message we present (we know it has not always been)• The approach we utilize (how we live and share the message)» “for” our friends /”for” our family / “for” the lonely and left out» “for” Collingwood“Seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” Jeremiah 29:7 2 Questions…1. Do you believe God is “for you”?2. Who are you for?I’m running as fast as I can…31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:31-39 1. As you look back over your life who is one person who you felt was “for” you? How did you know that? What did they do? What effect did it have on you?2. Read John 8:1-11. Put yourself in the story. What do you observe? How does it make you feel?3. Read Romans 8:31. Why is it hard to believe God is “for” us? Why do you think the church has done such a poor job of presenting this truth?4. What might a group of Christians who are “for” people actually look like? Describe what might be happening and what things the group would not want to have as part of this way of living.5. How can you be “for” your friends? How can you as a church be “for” Collingwood? How might this help with the problem of loneliness? The post For appeared first on New Life Church. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

After considering what happens in chapter 18, why do you think Elijah ran away from Jezebel? (Ch. 18 = victory over on Mt Carmel).4. Elijah isolated himself in the wilderness, 19:3-4. The “solitary broom tree” is even a symbol of his isolation. How was isolating himself feeding into his feelings of loneliness, vs. 10 & 14.5. Read 1 Kings 17:1-7. Elijah is alone here as well but he wasn’t isolating himself. What is the difference between this passage and the one in 19:1-9?6. What is the difference between solitude and isolation?
