It’s time to get back inside the MusicalTalk Time Machine to look at the music compiled by Thomas D’urfey in his seminal collection of 17th and 18th Century songs.  Thos looks at the connections between D’urfey, John Gay, The Beggar’s Opera, and a well-known nursery rhyme. There’s also a chance to hear a further chat with the multitalented academic and performer, David William Hughes, who talks about another of his one man musicals - this time named after D’Urfey’s famous book, Wit and Mirth. 

This week, Thos chats to David William Hughes, academic and performer of historic music, as they discuss his one man musical, Elizabethan, featuring Tudor and Jacobean songs and how music underwent a seismic development soon, ushering a musical world we still have today.  They then look forward to next week’s episode which leaps forward about a hundred years to look at the comic songs of the later Stuart monarchs and helped give rise to the Beggar’s Opera, one of the foundations of modern musical theatre.

This week, Thos looks at one of the most significant changes to fringe festivals in 2021 – the advent of the virtual productions!  Whilst they’ve been around for ages, it’s only since the pandemic that they really taken off. And with more virtual musicals on offer than live musical productions at this summer’s EdFringe, we take a look at two different shows you could have seen this year, and the variation in their approaches to putting on a show.

It’s the very welcome return of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe – and this year it was somehow both a lot smaller and a lot bigger – with a mixture of physical and virtual shows, giving it more of a global reach than ever.  As always, MusicalTalk will be talking about the pick of the crop of musicals from this year’s event but to get the ball rolling, and to mark the return of the world’s largest arts festival, Thos and Colm sit down to talk, not about any particular shows, but about the feeling, atmosphere and intoxication of the EdFringe as a thing in itself.  It’s time to put out the bunting…

We start the new year with another look at 42nd Street, one of the evergreen stories of musicals – with a peek at the original 1932 novel by Bradford Ropes, an in-depth look at the recent London production with Colm and a discussion on the unusual tensions in the show itself which points it in two directions at one: a literal two way street!

Colm and Thos discuss Drive By Shooting (A Street Art Opera), a brand spanking new ten minute opera that unexpectedly uses the model of the three hundred year old intermezzo they discussed last week, and then keeping it in the eighteenth century, Josh chats with Thos about a recent adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion that uses a modern model of performance but with a score from the late 1700s.

MusicalTalk pays tribute to Hollywood legend, the late Marni Nixon, with another chance to hear the second part of her in-depth 2010 interview which marked her eightieth birthday and explored some of the many things that had made her career so impressive, including more on her enigmatic career as the dubbing queen par excellence. 

With the sad news of the recent passing of “The Ghostess with the Mostess”, Hollywood legend, Marni Nixon, Thos recalls her unusual and perhaps unexpected fame and her incredibly broad career – not just as “dubber to the stars”, but a star in her own right!  There’s another chance to hear the first part of her in-depth 2010 interview, and – for contrast – to enjoy some songs from Wags! The Musical, about to go on a UK tour. 

Thos looks at the newest genre of musical theatre, the verbatim musical, made famous by the Royal National Theatre’s much lauded production of London Road, and asks if it subverts Sondheim’s axiom about content dictating form.  Also included is a conversation with the people behind Untold Wars: A New Verbatim Musical which uses the format in a different but equally powerful way.   If Grease is the word, then verbatim musicals are the word-for-word!
