For some of us, having faith in God comes more naturally. For others, it isn’t that simple. In this message from August of 2018, Pastor Erwin McManus walks us through his journey of finding faith. He explains that to him, the journey to Jesus was just that: a journey! Growing up he experienced a wide array of religions and was exposed to many world views. He did not imagine being a pastor when he grew up. As we navigate our way through life, we are informed about different religions and ways to God. But how do we know which path really is the way? Pastor Erwin references John 14:6 when Jesus says “No one comes to the Father except through me.” He explains that Jesus came to us and did not force us to believe. Rather, our own souls call us to believe in something more, and that Jesus is the only God that is searching for us, rather than us searching for God. When we have only a mathematical view of the world, we simply become a part of the falling domino effect. Our lives are a passive happening that we do not have freedom of choice inside of. But we know there must be more intention and meaning to our lives than this. We know deep down there is purpose and that our choices make a powerful impact on the future. Jesus’ life is the perfect example of a God who meets us right where we are and opens us up to the wonder of life all around us. “Jesus came to show us what God would do to get to us.” -Erwin McManus

He was gracious and kind and warm and deeply human. He was also the funniest person I have ever encountered in my life. He was funnier in a spontaneous 10 minutes on the way to the men's room than most are on stage delivering their best material. What struck me most was how generous he was with his time and how he genuinely enjoyed bringing people happiness. If you can love a person you don't know I have always loved Robin Williams. He made my life better. He made me better. His roles inspired me and elevated me. How tragic that a person would chose to end a life that the all of us treasured as a gift. Robin, if you could have only known how you made us feel... How you made us better. How your laughter healed us. You are a great loss to us. Everyone should know they matter more than they know. Everyone should know that life is worth the struggle. Everyone should have someone to remind them how much we need them here with us. Too many beautiful people have come to tragic endings. May every space where humans dwell be drenched in hope and love. Captain, My Captain."

Joshua‬ ‭3‬:‭1-17‬ "Early in the morning Joshua and all the Israelites set out from Shittim and went to the Jordan, where they camped before crossing over. After three days the officers went throughout the camp, giving orders to the people: “When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the Levitical priests carrying it, you are to move out from your positions and follow it. Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before. But keep a distance of about two thousand cubits between you and the ark; do not go near it.” Joshua told the people, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you.” Joshua said to the priests, “Take up the ark of the covenant and pass on ahead of the people.” So they took it up and went ahead of them. And the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to exalt you in the eyes of all Israel, so they may know that I am with you as I was with Moses. Tell the priests who carry the ark of the covenant: ‘When you reach the edge of the Jordan’s waters, go and stand in the river.’ ” Joshua said to the Israelites, “Come here and listen to the words of the Lord your God. This is how you will know that the living God is among you and that he will certainly drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites and Jebusites. See, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth will go into the Jordan ahead of you. Now then, choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe. And as soon as the priests who carry the ark of the Lord —the Lord of all the earth—set foot in the Jordan, its waters flowing downstream will be cut off and stand up in a heap.” So when the people broke camp to cross the Jordan, the priests carrying the ark of the covenant went ahead of them. Now the Jordan is at flood stage all during harvest. Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water’s edge, the water from upstream stopped flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance away, at a town called Adam in the vicinity of Zarethan, while the water flowing down to the Sea of the Arabah (that is, the Dead Sea) was completely cut off. So the people crossed over opposite Jericho. The priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord stopped in the middle of the Jordan and stood on dry ground, while all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground."

What are we so afraid of? In this reflective conversation, Mosaic Lead Pastor Erwin McManus helps us unpack how fear impacts our lives and can paralyze us from stepping into the future we long for.  He encourages us to look at fear differently. What if our fear is not situational but simply a reality we have allowed to rule us from the inside-out? What if the things we are most afraid of are simply the objects we project our innermost fears onto? What if living courageously was a choice? In Joshua chapter 1, God commanded Joshua and his people to be strong and courageous. This means choosing courage is not simply a suggestion God gives us, but a command. And though many of us have created lives that are tailor-made around our fears, Pastor Erwin proposes that the life God has for us will force us to walk into the center of our fears. When Jesus died on the cross, he declared to humanity that even death was not something to be feared. When we are aware of how deeply loved we are by God, we experience a boldness that sends us into our deepest fears with a heart full of courage. As we look to the example of Jesus, we are compelled to choose a life filled to the brim with courage and strength.

We underestimate the importance of influence when we choose to prioritize gaining success, financial gain, or command. The power of our influence cannot hindered by a lack of resources or authority. Authority shapes what a person does, but not their character; authority does not equal influence and it does not have the same result. The more energy and time you put into developing your character, the more you build into your influence. Inhale the good and wisdom that God has for you and exhale His hope and joy into others. When you keep to yourself what He’s doing in your life, you don’t get more air to breathe, you begin to suffocate. Everything He gives us is meant to be shared and experienced by the people in your world. Your life will be measured by your influence on others!

We aren’t called to reach the ‘top’ of success like we see modeled in another person’s life. Instead, we are called to journey to the edge - where our faith steps out into the unknown. In week four of the Mind Shift series, Pastor Erwin McManus reveals that what we find in the world around us is a direct reflection of who we are.   Pastor Erwin uses the story of Cain from Genesis as an example of this principle.  After Cain kills his brother out of jealousy, he lives in constant fear of being killed himself. Because he had been willing to commit murder, he saw murder in the heart of everyone around him.   Not only do you see in others what you hide in yourself, you attract from the world what you put into it.   If you want to surround yourself with people who are not bitter, you must first choose forgiveness. If you want to find trustworthy friends, you must become trustworthy. If you want to live in a better world, you must choose to become a better person.   Change your outer world by transforming your inner world.   It all starts with this mind shift!

In week three of the Mind Shift series, Pastor Erwin McManus unpacked the importance of breaking through the internal ceilings that hold us back. In the book of Matthew, Jesus said, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” However, we often believe we are walking in faith when we act passively, waiting for God to move on our behalf. Jesus then turned to his disciples and asked if they wanted to leave him too.  Jesus personally understood the reality of shifting relational dynamics when stepping into his intention.  Pastor Erwin emphasized that if people walked away from Jesus when he was walking in his purpose, why do we think we won’t lose people along the way. And though we will lose people, we were reminded that we become a magnet for everyone that’s supposed to find us when we step into our intention. This week in the 33 AD series, Lead Pastor Erwin McManus walks us through a powerful passage in the Gospel of John about a man named Lazarus.    Lazarus was a dear friend of Jesus and fell very ill. Jesus received the news of his sickness but stayed in another town for two  days before he went to see Lazarus. In that short time, Lazarus died. When Jesus reached Lazarus’ home town, Lazarus’ sister Mary greeted him with reproach. She told him, "If you had been here, my brother would not have died."    She knew he had the power to heal Lazarus, but believed he delayed his arrival on purpose and it cost her brother his life. She had faith in the power of Jesus, but not his character.    When Jesus found out that Lazarus had died, the Scriptures say that ‘He wept.’  In this moment, we see the heart of Jesus on display as he took the time to embrace the painful loss of someone he loved deeply.    Then the story takes a miraculous turn as Jesus goes to Judea and heals Lazarus, raising him from the dead.    Pastor Erwin shares that we are either running from pain or running to life.    When we run away from our pain, we can miss the life that Jesus wants to bring through our pain.    Tune into this powerful message and be reminded that life is calling you, even in your darkest moments.

Many of us grew up in environments where we were encouraged to lay our ambitions aside in the name of following Jesus. We were told that it was vain to pursue success in many arenas. At times, it can feel as though we are too broken for God to do anything great in our lives. The incredible news is that there is nothing God can't use in our lives to make us better. God takes our damage and uses it to make us who we were actually created to be. No matter what we're going through or what we have experienced, God has an incredible way of pulling us together because with God nothing is wasted. Moses' life was so unexpected on many levels. His story is a true reminder that how we start doesn't have to be how we finish. Sometimes we make decisions and let them cripple us and steal from our future. In Acts 7:30-32 Moses met God and God directed him toward his future. It says “An angel appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush in the desert near Mount Sinai. When he saw this, he was amazed at the sight. As he went over to get a closer look, he heard the Lord say: ‘I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Moses trembled with fear and did not dare to look." The only way to leave our past in the past is to let God create a new future. There are things we will do that we must own. There will always be people who want to define us by the worst moments in life. Even when Moses was running God, was preparing him. When we think we are wasting time, God uses time as fertilizer. For some of us, having faith in God comes more naturally. For others, it isn’t that simple. In this week’s message, Pastor Erwin McManus walks us through his journey of finding faith. He explains that to him, the journey to Jesus was just that-a journey! Growing up he experienced a wide array of religions and was exposed to many world views. Pastor Erwin McManus inspires us with this great message from April 22, 2018 as part of our "Best Of" Series. — Many of us long to step into the life Jesus imagined for us. But how do we really do it? First, we must realize that faith is not a moment or merely a one-time decision. Inviting God into our lives is just the starting point. There's much necessary work needed to move into a spiritual depth. Sometimes we misunderstand what it looks like to step into faith with God but the struggle of faith is not a new struggle! Asaph shares his struggles in Psalms 73:1-2 “God is truly good to Israel, to those who have pure hearts but I had almost stopped believing this truth. I had almost lost my faith because I was jealous of proud people. I saw wicked people doing well." We lose our clarity when we focus on what others are doing. As long as we're looking at others’ journeys and comparing, we're walking blind. There will be moments in life that just don't make sense. Because of this, our faith must be connected to who God is instead of understanding all that God does. There may be days we question if it's worth it. This future that’s becoming a reality belongs to those who are bold enough to create it. Right now, someone is creating a future for us to live in. The future is not created passively. The words from Solomon in the book of Ecclesiastes help us build the kind of future we long for. Solomon teaches us that we must have a generous spirit to create the greatest impact. We must ask ourselves: are we committed to doing the most good we can? Solomon says in Ecclesiastes chapter 11, "Invest in seven ventures, yes, in eight; you do not know what disaster may come upon the land. If clouds are full of water, they pour rain on the earth. Whether a tree falls to the south or to the north, in the place where it falls, there it will lie." Our human portfolio must be diversified because we never know what disaster might come. We must not hesitate to take all of the ground we can. Those who create the future understand what we consume is what will come out of our lives. There is no doubt that this year has been devastating for so many of us. Job loss has been unprecedented and a sense of lost hope is tangible. We've faced so much this year. It’s been a year with challenges that have at times felt endless. In moments like these, we must remember to look back and single out moments that we can express gratitude for. When we look back at 2020, we don't only want to remember the struggles. We must remember the moments that have been gifts to us. The story of Jesus may be familiar but we can choose to lean in with wonder as if we've never heard it before. In Luke 2:11 it reads, "Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” One birth changed human history. 2,000 years ago Jesus didn't wait for the perfect time. The perfect time is sometimes in the middle of what looks like a disaster. Love sees a disaster and brings the healing. God will push through all things to create a scenario where he could get to us. 2020 was disastrous but we must not miss the miraculous. God always has a plan for redemption. After Mary was told by an Angel that she would carry a baby boy, the son of God, she was shocked and overjoyed responding “I'm your servant, may your will be fulfilled." God can take the humble and raise them up. When we want God to see us we must choose humility, honor and courage as Mary did. When we’re full of ourselves or unkind, we move out of God sight. God’s mercy extends to those who fear him and scatters those who are arrogant. Mary’s song is a declaration that God is doing something to be remembered forever in human history, through those who humble themselves. We must remember the more we are full of ourselves the more invisible we become to God. Kindness and compassion is what God sees. While we’re home we can choose to make this the best Christmas ever. We can’t let this season pass by uncelebrated! In the first chapter of Luke, the author documents Jesus’ extraordinary life in real time. Luke knew the that the things Jesus was doing were so incredible and it would be hard for people to believe. Because of this, he wanted to make sure to make a historical record of what he saw. Luke took on the role as an eyewitness and servant. To be a servant of the world, we must do our part in the history we’re living through. We may find ourselves wondering if God knows what to do in this moment. He does! This is the moment where we need to be sharing how God has been good to us. We need to make sure we’re telling the orderly account of what God is doing in our lives. Even if the middle has been rough, it’s how the story ends that matters. We need to be eyewitness of Gods activity and servants of that reality. We’re all supposed to be like Luke, writing the orderly account of God’s work. God is grounded in this moment and He is here with us. How do we navigate this moment in history through rumors, chaos, and uncertainty? Pastor Erwin McManus invites us to look back as we look forward. Acts chapter 4 lays the foundation of the Church. They had little history with Jesus, and therefore they had to trust. This is a beautiful parallel to life right now. 2020 has been a year of instability-and this reality is new to us. Nevertheless, we are deciding to trust God and each other. This moment of crisis has compelled our community at Mosaic to be creative and to ask, ‘How do we thrive and make an impact during this time?’ In 2020 we’ve had 4,439 people trust Jesus with their lives. This year our community has decentralized through new technology we’ve had 444,580 people attend Mosaic virtually. We’ve had 278 people became reoccurring givers; 887 different people have chosen to give to Mosaic. We must step into this moment without fear as they did in Acts. In Luke 4:33 we learn that their giving was motivated by wanting the message of Jesus to be taken to the world. When Jesus is the core of the Church, it is unstoppable. We must remember the Church is here to bring hope to every single person. We must continue to serve and invest. Life is a series of choices. So many moments in our lives are reflected by our reactions. The choices we’re aware of are our conscious choices. When we quickly react-that’s a response to an unconscious choice. When we make an unconscious choice, we’re not taking in all of the information. An unconscious choice is a direct reflection of our internal world. It’s a result of information that comes from our character. The only way to change how we react is by changing the material of our inner world. In Mathew chapter 8:21 when Jesus invites a disciple to follow Him, the response He gets is, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” How many times have we been frustrated with God because he didn’t pick us? Often times we think that God hasn’t chosen us, but in reality God has chosen us first but our response to Him starts with “but first…." Whenever God is not first on our list he is not on our list. If we want our life to have an alignment with God, we must align our hearts first. Jesus isn’t saying we can’t have our own passions and desires. There’s a divide between being a visual learner and an auditable learner. To truly follow Jesus, we need to be good both. The Bible is not trying to heighten our visual reading skills-it’s trying to heighten our auditory skills. We must learn to hear God's voice clearly so we can identify it. Throughout the Scriptures, there’s an overwhelming theme of the power of God’s voice. We simply cannot navigate the life that God has called us to unless we learn to listen to it well. When God speaks He creates, and when He creates He brings life. If we want to experience the life that God has for us, we must hear God’s voice. In Hebrews 12:25 it says, “See to it that you do not refuse Him who speaks.” Scripture gives us a compass to know what things God would and would not speak. But when we only trust our compass rather than God's compass, we hit the same obstacles repeatedly. God is trying to shake us free from things that are holding us down. But the things that God has given us will be unshakable. If we want God’s voice to shape our lives, we need to realize God is always speaking and His voice creates life. We as humans don't have a perception of time, we have a perception of change. If change is not a given, we often feel as though we’ve wasted our time. Jeremiah chapter 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Pastor Erwin McManus reminds us that there is a difference between stepping into tomorrow and stepping into our future. God reminds us that with His love we not only receive hope but also a future. The future is where hope exists and everything in our present is committed to our future. There are two different experiences within humanity: those who are ‘highborn’ and those who are ‘service class.’ One is born into privilege and one is not. The Scripture makes it clear that all of us have an inheritance that has been passed onto us. But most of us aren’t living as if we have received this legacy. This legacy invites everyone into promises that may only seem accessible to the ‘highborn.’ In Galatians 4:1-5 Paul address the reality that we can be the recipients of all the generosity God has given us. He tells us we’re all heirs. And as we mature we begin to step into our inheritance. We’re not all highborn, but when we enter a relationship with Jesus we’ve been invited into a full inheritance. We must move toward maturity so we can handle the full inheritance God promises us. A relationship with God will transform us and that is an undeniable promise. But, we must step into this relationship ourselves. In any season of life, it is easy to get lost in what we do not have. More than ever, we get to take hold of what God has given us for the sake of those around us. God is always at work and beauty surrounds us. Do we see it? As a tribe, we believe that we are never limited in our ability to bring hope, love, and faith. Instead of becoming paralyzed by what we have lost, we are choosing to be mobilized by what we've gained.  To create momentum as a community, we can use the vehicle of joy. I any situation, there is beauty and wonder to behold. People need to experience the presence of Jesus in us and we can express it through the joy we have in any circumstance. We need to walk so profoundly in the presence of God that wherever we are Jesus is present and undeniable. Pastor Erwin hosted a powerful conversation on how we can be a part of the solution to racial inequality with Chris Simmons and Gerald Davis. Chris and Gerald are pastors at Cornerstone Baptist Church, the Church Pastor Erwin founded previous to Mosaic. Chris Simmons started the conversation by emphasizing the importance of building strong foundations as a Church. When foundations are built well, the building goes up easily. They discussed the practical ways Cornerstone Baptist Church has met the needs of their community over the years. Pastor Erwin shared that he saw how systemic racism caused those who needed the most help to have to work the hardest and pay the most for high-quality food, education, and housing. Pastor Erwin explained that he would pray that God would give him the ability to speak at the Cornerstone Church and give high-quality teaching. He felt this was his role in contributing quality to an environment that was at times given the lowest quality of many things. How do we sustain hope when everything seems uncertain? Gratitude. Why aren’t we cashing in on this attribute when gratitude is what frees our hearts. Peace comes as a ruler. Peace will rule our lives once we allow it to. Paul consistently reminds us how important it is to thank God in all we do. To be connected to God in a powerful way requires thanksgiving. In Colossians 3:15-17 Paul breaks it down for new believers, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” It’s important to remember that saying thank you sets our minds on a different ‘us.’ The Scriptures are there to tell us what we need to know, and more importantly: how we should live. More than ever, we need wisdom to navigate this moment in history. As we look around at the landscape, we realize there is an urgent need for us to create a new world around us. It is time to be a part of building a world that is founded on wisdom. Based on Chapter 1 in the book of James, Pastor David Arcos unwraps how God views wisdom and how it relates to us. Wisdom is a gift God wants to give us freely. But, when we ask God for wisdom, we are able to receive it only when we truly desire it at any cost. It’s easy to look at God and wonder if he’s holding out on us. With so much going on we can feel overlooked. It’s important to remember that the power of faithfulness is in the day-to-day moments. The story of David is a great reminder, that we are all chosen by God, maybe just not right now in the way we want. You have been chosen by God to do a powerful thing, but you must be faithful with what you’ve been given now so that you can be trusted later. Out of 1 Samuel 17:17-19 Pastor Joe Smith tells us about the story of David. David was teaching us how faithfulness is an important aspect of who we become.  He reminds us it’s not who you are when you get what you want, it’s who you are when you could be doing other things but you choose to do the hard things. God wants to teach us to serve but our heart posture must be right. We can elevate our roles by taking responsibility, not so we can think more highly of ourselves, but so we can serve others. Pastor Erwin asked Kelly about her journey with her career and family, and how race and faith have impacted her story. Our dreams are meant to bring us enjoyment, even when the journey seems difficult along the way. She told a story of a time when she felt stuck. Her best friend encouraged her to give and be generous, and to see how God would provide. Kelly made bold decisions after that conversation and decided to be more and more generous. She saw how God showed up for her again and again when she surrendered through generosity. Kelly then shared a moment of feeling fear when she found out she was going to be having a son. But, she was reminded that God would give her what she needed to raise a black man in today’s society.
