“I Thought I Was Going To Self-combust On The Dance Floor!”

Menopause Whist Black Season 5 Episode 10!  The Finale! Our guest this week is Dr Zandile Ndlovu @zandi__ndvolu. Zimbabwean, Dr Zandile Ndlovu is the daughter of political activists who fled Rhodesia in the sixties. Zandie worked in D&I within the financial sector before bringing her considerable expertise and passion for equity and equality to her current role as Head of Consulting of an award-winning HR advisory firm.  She was recently awarded her doctorate (WOOP!) which explores the phenomenon of ‘inclusion’ in order to create organisational cultural shifts. Zandi thought she had dodged a peri-menopause bullet for a few years until she found herself developing obvious symptoms - especially the dreaded hot flushes. But it was at a party where a friend mentioned how she was managing her own menopause that Zandi started to take steps towards her own care.  ‘Zandi’  offers some insight into her menopause experience touching on the following topics: The validation in seeing herself reflected back on TV Reconciling childlessness and perimenopause Speaking up and the power of sisterhood Private vs NHS menopause care Her unexpected love of running. …and so much more. Zandi celebrates herself in such a beautifully joyful way. We hope that you’ll be encouraged to tangibly big yourself up regularly too! This episode is available to watch on YouTube and listen on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon or wherever you get your aural candy. If Zandi’s story or any of the previous episodes resonate with you, don’t forget to share with others who may benefit!  You can also leave a comment or positive review on your chosen platform as this goes a long way to getting us to the people who need these words.  We’ll be back with Season SIX after a well deserved break. Keep talking, lovelies. “I’m a Neuro-Divergent Peacock!”

Adah (pronounced Ah-Dah) Parris has many titles including Life and Creative coach, Speaker and Artist. So many things to tell you about our lovely conversation! Nigerian/Guyanese Adah who is based in Southeast London says that she has ‘found herself’ during menopause. A late ADHD and Autism diagnosis helped the final puzzle pieces fall into place.  Adah shares her struggles coping with fibroids in her teen years, an endometriosis diagnosis in her twenties and how, together with her mother’s help and the incredible medical team at Guys and St Thomas’s hospital (S/o to the 'G’s' at the McNair centre), she learned to make health and lifestyle choices that worked best for her after her hysterectomy. Adah has some great tips around self-intimacy, awareness, and advocacy that I’m sure you’ll find helpful.  Tune in for this chat and out why Adah’s friends were convinced she’d fronted a national campaign for a well know brand of glasses a few years ago! This episode is now available to watch on YouTube and listen on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon or wherever you get your listening pleasure. “There’s no soldiering on in my vocabulary!”

Happy New Year! It’s 2024 and our FIFTIETH guest *runs around screaming excitedly* is the delightful Vanessa Afful of Made By Pure Hands Aromatherapy @mbpharomatherapy Vanessa Afful has had many former lives but found her calling as an aromatherapist and massage therapist after developing eczema in her twenties. A lack of natural skincare available to suit her specific needs led to her starting her own business Made By Pure Hands Aromatherapy. Vanessas Ghanaian mother was, unusually, open around her own menopause, entering this stage of her life surgically after her hysterectomy at 40 years old, when Vanessa was in her first year of secondary school. Vanessa speaks frankly about why her boundaries around self-care is important to her, shares great advice including a detailed sleep hygiene routine and urges fellow Black women to learn to put ourselves first in the queue before offering our care to others.  Heads up - We had a few gremlin issues so although our audio chat is as clear as usual, some of the video on YouTube is a tad sticky. This in no way takes away from Vanessas message or story. We move! This episode is now available to watch on YouTube and listen on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon or wherever you get your listening pleasure. Dancing kept me sane. I dance like a hippie whenever I can!

This week my guest is Pauline Blackwood founder of @Pendulummassage. Pauline Blackwood was raised in Islington, London and is now based in the Southeast of the capital. Formerly a textiles and food technology teacher for seventeen years, Pauline’s deteriorating physical health stopped her from being able to leave her home for work. Doctors discovered fibroids in her twenties which led to years of treatment including, homeopathy and two myomectomies before finally having a hysterectomy that left her bewildered at the lack of hospital post-op care. Pauline has a lifelong love of movement and combines this creativity with her massage practise which she turned to after leaving her career behind.  Pauline delivers her inspiring story with an endearing humour. Listen in for some eye-opening tips on how to recover well from a hysterectomy and how to advocate for yourself.  Please note: These episodes are conversations between humans discussing their own menopause experiences.
