The story revolves around a staff member we will call “John”, who had a parole officer and was revealed to be a sex offender, leading to his dismissal.
The incident took us by surprise as we had no knowledge of John's criminal background during his two months of employment. The situation was further complicated by miscommunication, as the manager initially stated that the parole officer wanted John to quit without disclosing the actual reason.
From this experience, we learned three valuable lessons: the world can be unpredictable, appearances can be deceptive, and thorough background checks are crucial, especially when hiring individuals who may interact with vulnerable groups.

Today we get to answer Jennifer’s question, who owns a coffee shop opening in the next few weeks. She's asking about managing employee smoke breaks in the restaurant.
Research shows that breaks can improve employee productivity hence allowing regular breaks is a common practice that many owners apply when managing a restaurant.
But how about smoke breaks? How can a restaurant owner manage employee smoke breaks? Setting a policy or guidelines that are clear and concise is the best way to handle this. For example, the guidelines may include that after every smoke break, an employee should wash their hands within the next 20 seconds otherwise they will be reprimanded. Also, let your employee understand the rationale behind every policy or guideline. Food safety and hygiene are of utmost importance, especially for restaurant businesses. As restaurant owners, it is our job to ensure we are managing smoke breaks for a safe workplace.

In very few cases, we discern and decide to fire a client. But the question is, when and how to do it? How to fire a customer elegantly? Is there even a way to fire a client nicely?
In the restaurant industry, we are dealing with people. People are delicate. We need to handle things accordingly to make sure we maintain our company character and culture. We are courteous, friendly and we are firm!

Who doesn't love their cell phone? Everybody uses cell phones everywhere. But this becomes an issue when employees use cell phones even at work unnecessarily. For restaurants, this problem requires special attention.
Generally, companies will limit using cell phones at work for two main reasons: for safety and interference with business.
