Marching Is Not Enough!!
Flame is back and takes the mic without missing a beat! Fired-up and ready to go, the show starts with Flame recognizing President Joe Biden’s first speech to a joint session of Congress. Mr. Biden focused on the economy and made the argument that a robust spending and jobs plan is crucial to the U.S. economy competing globally. Senator Tim Scott, 55, gave the rebuttal. He is the first African American U.S. senator from South Carolina and was the first Black person elected to the Senate from a Southern state since Reconstruction. Sen. Scott’s remarks have been widely ridiculed and the subject of memes that have gone viral; the Flamettes have a lot to say about his speech too. New Voting Rights Bills being pushed by legislators are controversial to many. A number of voting rights groups say the restrictions passed by Georgia, and being weighed in Texas and Arizona among other states, target Black people and other racial minorities. The Republican-backed Georgia law strengthened identification requirements for absentee ballots, shortened early voting periods for runoffs and made it a misdemeanor for members of the public to offer food and water to voters waiting in line. The push for policing reform leads to a policy change in New Jersey - could it be a model for the rest of the country? In closing, Flame & Lauren give a shout out to @allysonlewislakeland and asks listeners to check out their page and give their positions a listen; Nick reminds everyone to give Mother’s a call and/or hug for their special day this Sunday! NOT HIM OR HER WILL GET MY VOTE, AND THEY’RE THE SAME PERSON
Flame joins the conversation while on the road - and not a beat was missed, Lauren took the helm! This week, the effort to remove California Gov. Newsom collects enough signatures to force recall vote - Flame says her decision is made - no vote is necessary! President Biden will address a joint session of Congress for the first time, turning the corner on his 100th day in office. He is expected to highlight a number of his progressive achievements which include high marks for his handling of the outbreak and transitioning into the next phase of his administration’s infrastructure plans. Police Violence: A North Carolina sheriff says he wants body camera footage of Andrew Brown Jr.'s fatal shooting to be made public and will file a motion for it as early as today. Brown, a 42-year-old Black man, was shot and killed Wednesday by sheriff's deputies as they tried to serve him with an arrest warrant. This, along with last week’s police shooting of 16-year-old Ma'Khia Bryant in Columbus, Ohio, are casting even more scrutiny on police practices at a time when calls for police reform are ringing through the country. Capitol lawmakers are expressing optimism that bipartisan cooperation on a police reform bill may lead to real results. Jones v. Mississippi. The Supreme Court declined to impose new restrictions on the ability of states to sentence juveniles to life without parole, rejecting a challenge from a Mississippi man, Brett Jones, who was convicted of the 2004 stabbing death of his grandfather, a crime committed when Jones was 15. Justice Brett Kavanaugh penned the decision for his conservative colleagues. Earlier this week, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced a Justice Department investigation into the practices of the Louisville Police Department. This comes a little over a year after officers with the department shot and killed Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old aspiring nurse, in her own home during a botched raid. Flamettes sound off and the conversation is as raw, unscripted and authentic as always! A Coward Can Pull the Trigger. A Coward Can Shoot A Gun. But It Takes Courage to Spare A Life.
Production Note: This week’s episode was recored before Derek Michael Chauvin, a former police officer for the Minneapolis Police Department was convicted of the murder of George Floyd. The trial has been one of the most closely watched cases in recent memory, setting off a national reckoning on police violence and systemic racism even before the trial commenced. “The People V. The Klan” On March 20, 1981, Michael Donald left his sister's home in Mobile, Alabama, to pick up a pack of cigarettes from a nearby service station. It would be the last time Donald's family saw him alive. The next morning, the 19-year-old's body was found viciously beaten, hanging from a tree on a residential street in Mobile.Beulah Mae Donald, Michael’s mother, waged a lengthy legal fight to take the entire United Klans of America to court to hold them accountable for the death of her son. CBS News’ 60 Minutes highlighted The Oath Keepers, The far-right paramilitary group is home to active-duty law-enforcement officers who are training up other members to prepare for civil war. Cariole Horne wins a long-fought battle for justice! A New York State Supreme Court ruling reinstated the pension of the former Buffalo police officer who was fired after intervening when she says an officer put a man in a chokehold in 2006. Ms. Horne will receive a full pension, and backpay and benefits. The home of the ex-police officer who killed Daunte Wright is now protected by concrete barriers and a large fence - at the tax payer’s expense. Flame, Lauren, Nick and the Flamettes discuss. Y’all Keep Giving These Cowards Badges and Guns!
Policing tactics are criticized after a pair of officer-involved incidents dominate the news cycle. Caron Nazario, an Army second lieutenant pulled over because his newly purchased SUV lacked a permanent license plate, was held at gunpoint, pepper-sprayed, struck and handcuffed. Daunte Wright, a Minnesota man, was stopped for expired plates. Minutes later, he was shot and killed by a veteran officer who officials say, mistook her firearm for her taser. On April 6, a Navy medic opened fire at a Frederick business park, critically injuring two men before fleeing to a nearby military base where authorities shot him dead. The following Thursday, NFL Pro Phillip Adams kills five people and then himself. On the same day in Bryan, Texas, a workplace shooting leaves one person dead and five others injured. California lawmakers lay out details of an effort to return Bruce’s Beach land to an African American family as a form of reparations. What are “ideal” reparations? Nick says “education” should be part of the equation. Lauren says, “land” is what has long-term benefits. Flame says, “not everyone wants to go to college.” What say you? Excuse me, Who Is On Trial; Derek Chauvin or George Floyd?
CUJO in the White House? Major Biden, the Biden family rescue dog, has a second biting incident. Prayers Up for DMX, the rapper has been hospitalized, and according to news reports is, "in a vegetative state.” Florida Congressman, Matt Gaetz, who may have crossed moral and legal lines, is now the subject of a federal sex-trafficking investigation. The trial of Derek Chauvin enters week two and some are wondering if the Prosecution is making an effective presentation. A Virginia man, described as “mentally distressed,” rammed his car into two Capitol Police Officers - fatally injuring one before being shot and killed in the disastrous aftermath. A 6-year-old boy, accused of vandalism and destruction of property, is arrested; too much? Two teen girls are accused of assaulting and killing a senior citizen in a botched car-jacking.
