125. Karin Hurt: From leaving golden handcuffs at Verizon to writing a blog that became a Leadership Training company with clients like Adobe, Microsoft, Nestle!

We’ve had lots of guests on the show who quit their job, were called to a higher purpose, set their eyes on entrepreneurship and never looked back. One thing we don’t often see is the mess that goes on behind the scenes. Karin Hurt’s story is one that deserves to be told, because Karin is no ordinary former 9 to 5’er who started her own training firm. Karin left a very well-paying job at Verizon after 20 years, and left a tonne of money on the table, so much so everyone around her told her she was crazy. Karin then started a training firm called ‘Let’s Grow Leaders’ with her husband David, and have together helped 10,000 leaders in 14 countries with their human centric approach to increase innovation and productivity without burning out. Karin shares the trajectory of her career in great detail — from her unique academic journey to her unexpected leap into corporate roles, and finally her decision to pursue her own venture. Karin also sheds light on the concept of human-centered leadership, her encounters with workplace conflict, and her commitment to a communicative approach in dealing with these conflicts. The episode tells a story of how an individual's passion for their work can lead to extraordinary success and the transformation of one's career path. It emphasizes the pivotal role that mentors play in recognizing this passion and the essential need for confidence and humility in leadership. We end with Karin giving advice on how to deal with organizational conflict, using her research as a reference. This is a must listen episode!Pre-order Karin's book here.Follow Karin on LinkedInLearn more about her company about Let's Grow Leaders -------------------------------------------------------Liked this episode? 120: Shweta Aggarwal: How a Computer Science Engineer moved from India to Japan & UK & became an Anti-Colourism activist

To introduce my guest, I’m going to steal some rather uncomfortable, inconvenient facts from her new book. For hundreds of years, Asians, especially Indians, have believed that if you are fair, light skinned, it means that you are superior. That’s right – white supremacy doesn’t just exist among white people. Sadly, this is still the case even in modern, ‘liberated’ India. Global sales of skin lightening products are expected to cross $8.9 billion by 2024, according to the World Economic Forum. Ever since the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020 following the brutal murder of George Floyd, my guest found herself sharing innumerable stories with her husband and kids about her painful past. Ever wondered what persistent bullying will do to a 6 year old in the long term? Ask a 45 year old. Ask Shweta Aggarwal. Shweta is an anti-colourism activist with a colourful life. A computer science engineer by trade, her passion is dance and writing. Shweta grew up in India and Japan, and has lived in the UK for almost 25 years. We have a lot to unpack with Shweta, and talk about things like how skin-tone bias affects racial equality at work and also, all things career pivots. Learn more about Shweta Aggarwal: https://shwetaaggarwal.com/Follow her on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theblackroseway/https://www.instagram.com/theblackroseway/Get The Black Rose and Shweta's other books:https://shwetaaggarwal.com/product/the-black-rose/The semi-final at Britain’s Got Talent 2010:https://youtu.be/5CnWXjr68p4?si=dlSl1w-0rpR3A29J------ Liked this episode? We have a lot to learn from Niraj’s journey .In this episode, Niraj shares how his family emigrated from India in the early 1950's to London and eventually reached Northern Ireland. We also talk about Niraj's stellar 25 year career in Sales, which started after his original plan to be a rock star didn't exactly pan out. This is a deeply intimate conversation, and I'm grateful to Niraj for sharing so openly with us. 114. Jason Feifer: Learn how to Build for Tomorrow, with Editor-in-Chief at Entrepreneur Magazine

My guest today is Jason Feifer. Jason is the opposite of a one trick pony. He’s a multi-hyphenate: Editor-in-Chief of Entrepreneur magazine, podcast host, book author, keynote speaker, startup advisor, and my personal favourite: non-stop optimism machine. In this episode, we are going to learn about Jason’s journey to, I know this is going to sound cliché and click-bait-y… embracing change. Because as much as we all know it’s important to understand and accept change, not a lot of us like it, let alone thrive in change. Fret not, Jason is here to show us how. We cover a LOT during this conversation, such as:- Jason's career pre-Entrepreneur Media. In fact, we talk about his study choices during college and whether it was obvious to him from an early age that he was meant to be a journalist.  - How Jason pitched dozens of magazines and how one landed at Washington Post- Jason's time at small and large media houses: Men’s Health, Fast Company, Maxim Magazine etc. and whether there's one position that massively influenced how he shows up in the world today - Of course, we talk about about Entrepreneur magazine. What was the company like back in 2015? How did Jason get hired there and what helped him get from Executive Editor to Editor in Chief in a very short time (one year)?- I geek out with Jason on a couple of chapters of his book to simplify the takeaways for you, whether you want to grow your career or company, or both. - Jason has met with and interviewed so many famous people Jason: Ryan Reynolds, Gary Vaynerchuk, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jimmy Fallon, etc. Which interview went surprisingly different from what he expected and what did he learn from the experience? - Jason's advice for someone who's in a career transition and how to best make the most of the situation, while being practical and aware of the day to day needs.Subscribe to Jason's newsletter: http://onethingbetter.email/Get Jason's book: https://www.jasonfeifer.com/book/ Follow Jason on Social Media:Jason on LinkedInJason on Instagram----------------------------------------------Liked this episode? 109. Deepa Purushothaman: From Politics to Partner at Deloitte to Author & Entrepreneur

My guest today is Deepa Purushothaman who worked at Deloitte for over 20 years and was the first Indian American woman and one of the youngest to make partner. While that is impressive in and of itself, that is not the only reason Deepa is on the show. Deepa wrote this on LinkedIn a couple of years ago: I left my 22 year old job and felt like I was jumping off the cliff of uncertainty during COVID, to write and launch a business. It felt scary, uncertain, and even a little frivolous at the time. Less than a year later, Deepa released her best-selling book ‘The First, The Few, The Only, How Women of Color Can Redefine Power in Corporate America’, and this is a conversation that we can ALL weigh in on, not just women or a certain race, we have a lot to learn from Deepa’s experience and work. We cover a lot in this conversation:-Deepa's journey to making partner, -How there are so many Indian origin CEO's in the US but not near as many Indian women-What 'work on your executive presence' meant as feedback for her... and much more.Learn about Deepa and her work here:https://www.linkedin.com/in/deepapuru/https://www.n2formation.com/https://www.deepapuru.com/The TED talk---------------------Liked this episode? 108. Dr Pal: How a Heart Attack changed his Life and Career

My guest today is a Dr Pal, one of California’s leading experts in the fields of gastroenterology and hepatology. There are 3 reasons I wanted to bring the good doctor on the show. Number one is it’s pretty cool to have a doctor on the show, second, are some startling facts: 13% of the world is obese, 39% of the world’s adults are overweight, 1 in 5 children are overweight, and we need to learn more about this, and Dr Pal has his own personal journey. Thirdly, Dr Pal, (full name Dr Palaniappan Manickam) is a content creator, with 800k followers across Youtube and Instagram! (I counted 600k during the time of recording and it just keeps growing!). Dr Pal makes useful videos using his charateristic humour and the theme is always ‘making yourself a priority’ so that you don’t need to hire doctors like him,  ever. We talk about the following:- How the Indian steretype of having a doctor or engineer in the family was very much alive in his family and community growing up- The journey to study medicine in India and then eventually in the US, with all of the pitfalls in between- The obesity epidemic, the causes and some timeless pieces of advice for maintaining good health, coming from the doctor's own experience-  The accidental start of Dr Pal's content creation journey: how it started and how it's goingFollow Dr Pal across social media:Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@DrPalInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/dr.pal.manickam/----Liked this episode? 102: Nicholas Jemetta: Career advice from The Fancy Dress Dad

Pitching yourself for a new job is never easy. Pitching yourself when you live with anxiety, is harder. What's even harder? Pitching yourself to the BBC when you have a stutter. Or doing multiple professional speaking gigs, with that stutter. The most courageous of all? Dressing up in a fancy dress costume (think skeleton onesie!) and showing up to a work meeting on Zoom. And then again as Darth Vader. Then again as Minnie Mouse. Why on earth would anyone do that?? Listen to the episode to find out.For my next guest, I want you to google the term ‘fancy dress dad’. Do it! Nicholas Jemetta is a Product Coach and Mental Health speaker and has worked at some of the top retailers in the UK, British Telecom, Ricoh, Reed and others. In June 2021, Nick decided  to go out and start his own consultancy. Nick lives and thrives with anxiety and says it is his superpower and believes firmly that our mental health doesn’t define us.Learn more about Nick's services here:https://linktr.ee/nicholasjemettaFollow Nick on LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicholasjemetta/----------------------------------------------------Liked this episode? 101. Lisa Bowman: Fighting Back Harrassment

Today’s conversation will be with a very very courageous woman: Lisa Bowman. Lisa has held Executive level marketing roles at UPS and was most recently the global CMO for The United Way, the international network of over 1,800 local nonprofit fundraising affiliates. Why do I call Lisa brave? Lisa experienced harassment at her job, spoke up, made some people uncomfortable, and was eventually flat out fired as retaliation for speaking up.  Listen to this excerpt:“I am a big believer that experiences mean nothing if you don’t learn from them. When this experience chose me, it offered me the opportunity to learn and educate others on the hard reality: if you don’t speak up for yourself, sadly, nobody will do it for you. With the continuing increase in stories of workplace harassment, along with the by now predictable failures of so many organizations to respond appropriately, it’s understandable that employees end up feeling helpless and more likely to give up rather than stand up and fight, believing that self-preservation and silence in an effort to protect their careers are the smartest courses of action.”One of the reasons for having Lisa on the show is that she’s going through her journey, as we speak. This isn’t a ‘now that all the bad stuff is behind you, let’s talk’ type of interview. And we live in this twisted world where the person who does the wrong thing, walks away completely unscathed, and the one who is violated, is punished. This is a conversation that is very much needed.Follow Lisa on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lisabowmanprofile/Lisa's book: https://www.amazon.com/Harasshole-Cautionary-Americas-Favorite-Charity/dp/1957084030------------------------------------------Liked this episode? 100. Nimrat Kaur: From Homeland to Hollywood

It's episode 100 of How I Got Hired! And I can't think of a better way to mark the occasion than share this conversation with you.My guest today is a very talented actor who has starred in hugely successful productions like the Homeland series, as well Hindi movies like The Lunchbox (screened at the Cannes Film festival), Airlift and more recently, Dasvi. We are going to chat with Nimrat Kaur and trace her career of nearly two decades. In this revealing chat, Nimrat talks about:- How Nimrat got accepted into a prestigious college and decided to leave it behind to pursue a career in acting, and how her family responded- How Nimrat started her career in print and TV ads, working in theater, and how she got her first big break, after many years of ups and downs, that changed her career trajectory.- Taking a different path from what is typically seen in Indian commercial cinema, which tends to be heavily stereotyped by performers’ dancing and lip syncing, predictable scripts and women being in supporting roles. We also talk about how this decision to carve her own path played out pragmatically especially in the early days (bills to pay while still being authentic to who you are.)- How an actor like her defines success- Some cool and exciting projects she is currently working on (I can't wait for 2023 and watch Nimrat in Happy Teacher's Day!)Hope you enjoyed this conversation as much as I did!Follow Nimrat on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/nimratofficial/----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Liked this episode? 99. Angus Grady: Unlock your Best Life

My guest today is The LinkedIn Unlocker Angus Grady. But wait, there's much more to Angus than LinkedIn, so much more.I met Angus on Clubhouse around 18 months ago and my jaw drops every single time I hear Angus speak. The words flow out like honey, but wait, that’s not the only reason I have invited Angus on the show. Angus and I are going to be talking about some darker facets of life, like alcohol addiction, and the fact that Angus has been sober since 2004. In fact, during a recent chat, Angus wrote to me:Sobriety is, like wearing several pairs of glasses at once, everything is clear, bright and so colourful. 97. Ben Lampkin: How he Rocket Fueled his Career

My guest today is Ben Lampkin. Who’s Ben Lampkin, I hear you ask. Well, you may not have heard of Ben, but I can guarantee you’ve definitely heard of his boss, Sir Elton John! Ben is Managing Director of Rocket Sports, a sports marketing business specialising in talent management, brand partnerships, etc, co-founded by Elton John. While that’s a pretty cool thing in and of itself, it’s not the only reason I’ve invited Ben to the show. Ben has had a non-traditional career path, and stopped studies after high school. I’m grateful to podcasting as a medium, because with this conversation, I want to showcase that there are multiple ways to be successful. In this warm and forthcoming exchange, Ben shares with us:- his unconventional career journey, - how he got hired by Rocket Sports, - how he and his team make a decision to sign on new talent,... and so much more.Follow Ben on LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-lampkin-3aba9724/Book by Ben's cousin Dougin Lampkin: https://www.amazon.com/Trials-Error-Dougie-Lampkin-author/dp/1471170616/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8---------------------------Liked this episode? 96. Enrique Camacho: Army Colonel to Uber Driver to Founder!

My guest today is a US Army Colonel turned Uber driver. True Story! I’m going to take an excerpt from a LinkedIn post of his that blew up in May 2022 and got 60,000 likes and thousands of comments and shares:“I was kind of a big deal, at least I thought. I worked for some of the most recognized names in defense, served at a few national agencies. Then I started Model Citizen Coffee Company and realized - I need more money! So, between writing business plans and developing product lines, I drove an Uber and managed a 4.9999999 star rating - thank you Mr. 3 Star, blew-up my 5-star rating.  Here's what I learned in the experience. Nobody cared that I was "Kind of a Big Deal”. I asked my Uber riders lots of questions, and empathized with: Funny thing is, only 3 out of 453 passengers I delivered ever asked about my story. Perhaps the 450 thought Enrique Camacho, was a middle aged immigrant supporting his family the best way he could, with a limited skill set and future.  Truth bomb hit me. We're only as good as our last race. People don't really care what we've done. They're interested in what we can do for them today and tomorrow. It's not a bad thing, it's a realization that we must continuously learn and grow, so we don't stagnate. This conversation is a brilliant lesson in checking ego, taking baby steps, facing the fear and doing it anyway.Hope you enjoy it as much as we did!Follow Enrique and Model Citizen Coffee on Social Media:https://www.linkedin.com/in/enrique-n-camacho/https://www.instagram.com/modelcitizencoffee/https://www.facebook.com/ModelCitizenCoffeehttps://modelcitizencoffee.com/ -------------------------------------------------Liked this episode? 94. Chris Anderson: An Unedited Career

My guest today has worked with CNN, Huff Post, Business Insider, HSBC, LinkedIn, and even at a top gaming company in Hong Kong. Chris Anderson recently moved back to his native California after some very adventurous years in South East Asia. There are 3 reasons I wanted to bring Chris on the show:a)     Chris not only talks about career pivots, one of my favourite topics, but has also lived itb)     The one theme in most of Chris’ career is related to content: managing it, mastering it, learning what works and what doesn’tc)      Chris spearheaded the ‘Top Startups’ while at LinkedIn News and I want to talk about start ups: the good, the bad and the ugly. In this episode,  Chris and I cover a lot of topics, including:- How he got hired at LinkedIn and how life changed within a couple of months when Covid hit SE Asia.- Applying to listed jobs vs the hidden job market- How everyone is a content creator to some degree, and how we can up our game We really enjoyed this conversation, I hope you do too!Follow Chris on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chris77/-------------------------Liked this episode? 92. Priya Ramesh: 'Master' your Leadership

If you want to be a fantastic leader, today’s conversation is perfect for you. My guest is Priya Ramesh. Priya is a Master Certified Coach and that in itself, I think is a pretty big deal, there are only 70 MCC’s in India and  only 1,327 wordwide.  Priya was my Mentor Coach during my Coaching Certification Program and I have learnt so much from her. Today, the tables have turned, I’m the one asking the questions, and I know this will be such a valuable conversation In this episode, Priya and I talk about:- What Priya's original plans were upon graduating from university, and what actually ended up happening in reality- What has been the most transformative position Priya has held in your career, and how she got there- They say a shoemaker’s children usually go barefoot. Being a coach and helping and guiding so many thousands of people, doesn’t always translate to helping yourself objectively. How can someone listening today, who is heavily in that service mindset, put on their own oxygen mask first?- What it's really like being a Leadership Coach and what are some of the traits of a top coach- Priya's own coaching model the beautifully encapsulates the coach/client relationship. My South Asian listeners will particularly enjoy this one, and the rest will learn two new Sanskrit wordsLearn more about Priya by visiting her LinkedIn profile and website:https://www.linkedin.com/in/priya-ramesh-mcc-leadership-coach-b015119/https://orenda.net.in/ -----------------------------------------------------------------Liked this episode? 91. Andy Griffiths: Writing your Own Story

My guest today is Andy Griffiths. If you haven’t heard of Andy, and if you have kids/nephews/nieces, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of the Treehouse Books: the 13 Storey Treehouse, 26 Storey Treehouse and so many more. These books are created by New York Times bestselling team Andy Griffiths who is the writer and Terry Denton, the illustrator.  Andy Griffiths is one of Australia’s most popular children’s authors. He and Terry have collaborated on more than 33 bestselling books since 1997. In Australia, Andy and Terry’s books have sold over 10 million copies, won innumerable awards including Book of the Year. Their Treehouse Series in particular have been embraced by children around the world and now published in more than 35 countries. Five of the books in the series have been adapted for the stage and have all had sell-out seasons at the Sydney Opera house, as well as highly successful seasons in the Netherlands, New Zealand and the US.  I’ve brought Andy to the podcast for so many reasons: to learn about Andy’s career, because it is a prime example of squiggly career path vs a career ladder that we’ve all believed to be true for so long, and this is such a valuable episode.  In this episode, Andy takes us behind the scenes and shares what real life was like, before being 'discovered' by Macmillan Publishers. Andy shares his stories of courage, heartbreak, rejection and how that journey brought him closer to his current success. We also talk about how he and Terry achieved global success in their fifties and sixties, and what that means in the world today that is quite obsessed with youth. We also talk about 'cotton wool' childhoods and why Andy is so vocal about it on social media.Whether or not you have children, nephews or nieces, I know this will prove to be a valuable listen. Learn more about Andy and his books here: http://www.andygriffiths.com.au/-------------------------Liked this episode? Today’s episode is part of my series ‘Where are they now’ to check up on how some of my past guests are getting on and how sometimes the best laid plans can go differently. And today I am speaking with Jay Beech. Jay was a guest on the show back in June 2021 on episode 38 titled ‘From Redundancy to 8 job offers in 2 weeks’’ and we had chatted a month or so after his #HireJayBeech campaign which went viral on TikTok and LinkedIn. Then, in Oct 2021, just 5 months later, he was unfortunately laid off again. His #HireJayBeech sequel was born and Jay started his new gig pretty quickly. In this episode, Jay shares with us how he navigated: -another layoff so quickly after the last one,-an ADHD diagnosis while dealing with the above-how he selected his current employer and how the process was different from last time-how he handles trolls-and how leaning in to being himself has attracted unprecedented opportunities and changed his career and life.Follow Jay on social media: Tik tok: @jayybeechInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/jayybeech/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/Jaybeechmedia----------------------------------------------------------Liked this episode? 85. Joel Lalgee: Hiring Those who Hire YOU

My guest today is in Wisconsin, USA and his name is Joel Lalgee. Joel is a recruiter who hires recruiters, and in this episode we are going to talk about it all, Joel’s career and the state of the recruitment industry, and how that impacts job seekers and others in transition. If you don’t follow Joel on LinkedIn, I highly recommend you start, because his is probably one of the funniest accounts, and his memes are epic, and you know what they say about humour: it’s exaggerated truth. In this episode, Joel and I chat about: - What his original plans were when Joel was younger and how those plans got derailed - Which position has been THE career defining role for Joel and how he got hired there - How Joel got hired in his current position (hint there was no resume involved!)- How Joel has transitioned from a small business owner to an employee - Joel’s opinion on what’s HOT in recruitment. We talk about how the demand for recruiters is sky high these days, that there are more demand than software engineers. What are these recruiters being hired for, is it all mostly for recruiting tech roles? And is it all a bubble?  - What according to Joel, is are some of the biggest mistakes he sees job seekers make these days And so much more!Follow Joel on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joel-lalgee-73a56621/-----------------------------------------------------------------------Liked this episode? 84: Mita Mallick: Thriving at J&J, Pfizer, Unilever and Beyond

My guest today is LinkedIn Top Voice Mita Mallick. Mita has headed consumer brands at places like Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer and Unilever. The following excerpt from her linkedin bio brings us to what Mita is doing today:“As a kid, I loved watching commercials instead of actual tv shows (still do!) and going to the store with my mom, studying all the new packaging and products on shelf, testing and trying new things. But as a kid, I didn’t see many stories being told that included people who looked like me. I was the funny looking dark skinned girl, with a long funny looking braid, whose parents spoke funny English. Until it wasn't funny anymore. I was bullied by my peers for years. And I just desperately wanted to fit in. I wanted to belong.   I have spent over 15 years as a storyteller. Leading iconic brands like AVEENO, AVON Color Cosmetics, Chapstick, Vaseline, Suave and Dove. Throughout my career, I have fought hard to ensure people like me are included. Ensuring Black and Brown people were represented in campaigns. Ensuring products we created were for all skin tones. Ensuring we were not reinforcing stereotypes.  I believe diversity of thought doesn’t happen without diversity of representation. When you have all those points of views, life experiences, and cultural backgrounds coming together around a table. Colliding, clashing, and collaborating- that’s when magic happens. That’s when we come up with that one break through innovative idea, campaign, innovation- to authentically and purposefully serve customers and communities.”In this conversation, Mita and I chat about how she got hired at her dream companies Johnson & Johnson and Unilever and how she transitioned to the DEIB space. We also talk about what it means on a day to day basis work in this space, and how we can all become allies. If you enjoy honesty and clarity on a difficult subject, you will LOVE this conversation!Follow Mita on LinkedIn here.Listen to her podcast Brown Table Talk with Dee Cee Marshall here.------------------------------------------------------------Liked this episode? 83: Jon Hyman: Lawyer up!

Today I’m fortunate to have Jon Hyman on the show. Jon is an Employment Lawyer and in essence, the voice on the other end of a phone when a business needs advice on firing an employee, a policy or agreement drafted, guidance on a leave of absence, disability accommodation, or internal complaint or investigation, or any others issue that plague human resources professionals and businesses daily. And when the need arises, Jon works in litigation and has likely seen all sorts of appalling behaviour by both employers and employees, both of which shall not be named!Jon is one of my favourite people to follow on LinkedIn, for multiple reasons:His posts often have tongue in cheek humour about the most grueling workplace issuesand no matter what, Jon is always honestIt’s rare to see lawyers speak up so candidly on social media. Jon wears multiple hats, and among other things, he is now a podcaster! So, get ready to ‘witness’ a conversation where we ‘raise the bar’!In this fun conversation, Jon and I cover:- how legal dramas on TV compare to working in a law firm in real life- what were some of Jon's career defining roles and how he got hired there- how a random call Jon accidentally answered changed the trajectory of his career- Why Jon decided to work on the employer side, and not on the employee: Jon shares his decision making process, which I think can help you if you are at a similar crossroad- The most facepalm moment (there have been many!) Jon has witnessed in his legal career. If you're looking for a fun, thought provoking conversation and learn life lessons directly from an employment lawyer, this is an episode you cannot miss!Follow Jon:On LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathanhyman/Jon's blog: https://www.ohioemployerlawblog.com/The blog article we talked about during the showJon's podcast with his daughter Norah: https://norahanddadshow.buzzsprout.com/-----------------------------------------Liked this episode? 70. Claude Silver: A Heart-to-Heart with the Chief Heart Officer

My guest today is like no other. Claude Silver heads the People function at Vayner Media, and there are two things that make her very different.Firstly, Claude is not a career HR person, no! 64. Ruchira Chaudhary: Learn the Secrets to Uncommon Leadership

“It was 2013 and I was exiting a large and well-known organization and just the previous year, I'd graduated with a mid-career MBA from Chicago Booth School of Business. Armed with new found knowledge and skills, I felt I could change the world or at least, the corporate world. So I made some good moves, including taking up high profile corporate roles that had their rewards. 63. Sonalogues: How I moved from India to South America to Europe (and everything in between!)

How did I get hired for a plum consulting role in Chile and all the HR roles here in Europe? In this podcast episode, I reveal it all. I don't know anyone who isn't insecure and suffering from low self-confidence at one point or another.  I've had more than my share. I talk a lot about how COMPETENCE builds CONFIDENCE. Put the reps in, repeat. It will get better. And it does. What does that mean??Here's my own story, where I have shared my rocky journey on building confidence and self-belief with my fab friend Jules White from back in July 2021:𝐌𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠:⬆Knowing that HR as a function was right for me, at 18 years of age.⬆ Living on the other side of the world at 26 years old, in Uruguay and Chile⬆ Learning Spanish to open up new conversations and opportunities⬆ Teaching English to the local professionals𝐍𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠:⬇ Living in Europe with a new born baby to start the MBA at 29⬇ Constant comparison with others, "I'm not -- enough"⬇ Being laid off multiple times⬇ Leaving a job with nothing to go to at 39⬇ Starting my own business at 40⬇ My YouTube journey in 2018Fast forward to 2021. Confidence is my Superpower!Remember this: Confidence is learnt AND IS A JOURNEY.Most people only share the ⬆ moments and you think they were born confident and have never suffered from self-doubt.As the quote goes:'𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 "𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐦𝐞". 61: Pragya Mishra: Fashion Design in Delhi to SAAS Marketing in Denmark!

“It was May 2019. I made the biggest decision of my life. I left my super comfortable job at Reebok, packed my life in 4 suitcases and moved across the globe to study more. But NOTHING went as planned. Little did I know that I'll be graduating in the middle of a pandemic. Little did I know that it would be the worst moment to be out in the job market again. And little did I know that I won't be seeing my family for over 2 years. The world has changed completely since then.  But sometimes, when nothing goes per plan, we're pushed to find solutions outside our comfort zone. And more often than not, they are way better than our original plan.”In this week’s podcast episode of How I Got Hired, I speak with Pragya Mishra on how she landed the plum role of Head of Marketing at Shield, the LinkedIn Analytics platform, without any real experience in SAAS Marketing or even Tech for that matter. In this juicy episode we talk about:- What made Pragya make big, bold, uncertain moves when life was downright comfortable in every single way- How she moved to Denmark with a job offer that (at first) didn’t offer any salary!- How she got hired by Shield, the world’s leading app for LinkedIn analyticsAnd so much more!I love Pragya’s career story, I hope you enjoying listening to the entire conversation! To learn more about Pragya Mishra, follow her on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mishrapragya/-------------- Liked this episode? 60: Busting the most common resume myths, once and for all!

One set of professionals who are bashed up regularly on LinkedIn are career coaches, for giving bad advice to job seekers.I'll be the first to say, what's good or bad lies in the eyes of the beholder, right?Having said that, I don't want to pass judgment because I'm acutely aware that like a few other coaches, I help job seekers around the world, and what's one coach's opinion in Minneapolis may be quite different to another in Milan and another in Mumbai. Advice that is directive and absolute like 'You should' and 'This is wrong' comes from a very narrow way of thinking.I will be exploring 8 myths out there on resume writing, and share my take on them, based on my own experience of going through over 250,000 resumes during my career, hiring across 3 continents. Make sure you sign up to the FREE LIVE masterclass, because we will be sharing best practices on how to write that winning resume that get you calls for interviews. 58. Richard Robinson: From 94 rejections to dream job

Imagine joining a company and within days, you are flung into an unexpected crisis situation.  Our guest Richard Robinson definitely knows a thing or two about this. As a new employee at McDonalds he was part of a team that faced down one of the largest reputation crises that business had ever faced.  With over 28 years of Sales and Marketing Experience in companies like Coca-Cola, McDonalds,  and Publicis Worldwide and working on international campaigns like Olympic Games Pledge in 2012, there is so much to learn from Richard’s career. In this enlightening and frankly very entertaining conversation, Richard shares how: - An awkward rejection at an interview with a top employer turned into the best career advice that helped him to eventually get hired at his first job, after 94 rejections - What helped him to stand out and get hired at senior international marketing roles with Coca-Cola and McDonalds - How as a new employee at McDonalds, Richard dealt with the crisis following the release of documentary ‘Supersize Me’ In 2006 and the most compelling lessons from the experience - How he selects the best individuals for the most visible and high stakes campaigns and how his most effective hiring criteria are inspired from plumbling (yes, plumbing – radiators, pipes, drains!)  - His favourite career advice and the question that he asks himself at the end of every year, which just happens to be perfect timing – as we see off 2021 shortly! This is an unmissable conversation, whether you want to learn about the fast-paced environment of consumer businesses or just learn from someone who had navigated the peaks and valleys in a  remarkable career. Follow Richard on social media:https://www.linkedin.com/in/rprobinson/https://twitter.com/londonrobinson-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Liked this episode? 51. David Fano: Build Different

“Being an artist is not a real job. You’ve got to make a living and put food on the table. Pursuing your passion is a nice to have, but not many get to do that.” I’m sure you heard something similar from your own parents, while growing up.This is what David was told by his immigrant father when he expressed his love for drawing as a career option. There were several unforgettable moments in my conversation with David Fano, formerly Chief Product and Growth Officer at WeWork and now Founder of Teal HQ, a startup made to help job seekers. “I loved building, but didn’t necessarily love buildings.” - After he completed his Architecture studies and began working. “I’m a better starter than finisher.”- When we talked about his deeper decision to leave WeWork. What I love is that David is following his north star, which tells him you NEED to be happy at work, no matter what anyone tells you. His mission is now helping job seekers and professionals with tools and frameworks to do just that. We also talked about David’s best tips for:- someone who has an idea for a company and wants to start taking it seriously.- a job seeker to stay on their game when things are not going their way-how to know it’s time to quit a jobAnd much, much more!Follow David Fano on Social Media:https://twitter.com/davidfanohttps://www.linkedin.com/in/davidfano/Teal's website:https://www.tealhq.com/--------------------------------------------Liked this episode? 50. Sana Khurshid: Turning Adversity into Advocacy

This 50th episode of How I Got Hired is a very special one.  Have you ever felt that you have faced too much adversity? Here’s a story that will open your mind.  On March 25th 2002, Sana Khurshid was travelling with her sister on a highway in Islamabad, when they suddenly met with a deadly road accident. Her sister died on the spot while Sana's body was 95% paralysed. In the hospital, Sana was unable to talk or move any of her body parts. Her only way of communication was blinking her eyes. To get the attention of sleeping nurses, she would often bite on her ventilator tube to stop the oxygen supply and set off the alarm. After years of medical treatment, she was able to talk but physically became wheelchair-bound for the rest of her life. The iron-girl however, didn't lose heart. Sana went on to complete her studies in London, and successfully completed her LLB and then LLM. She is now a practicing lawyer in Lahore and actively works for the differently abled and is committed to make public places accessible for them everywhere. Talk about turning adversity into advocacy. Literally.I am in awe of Sana and what she has achieved. She has many words of wisdom for you, so please join us in this inspirational conversation:Sana shares the raw, unfiltered emotions of going through a trauma and what kept her pushing through, day after day.We also talk about the law, and what made her pursue it, and how she managed tasks like homework, being paralysed from the chest down. We also talk about Inclusion and what it means to be an advocate for the differently abled in Pakistan, both the daily struggles and wins. If you think you can’t do something because you face too many obstacles, this episode will make you think again. Follow Sana Khurshid on social media:https://www.instagram.com/sanakhurshid.official/https://www.facebook.com/sanakhurshid.officialLiked this episode? 49. Radhika Gupta: Unbreakable

When I watched ‘The Girl with the Broken Neck’ talk on Youtube, I knew I had to have the Speaker on this podcast. Was it because of the fact that she was born a little different from everyone else and has seen success beyond most people’s imaginations, in spite of, or rather, because of how unique she is? Or was it that she got accepted into Wharton and graduated with the highest honours?Or that she went through 7 heartbreaking rejections from the top consulting firms and considered jumping off a building, but didn’t? Or was it that she left a cushy job on Wall Street to come back to India to start a financial services business, during a recession, in spite of everyone advising her that it was a terrible idea? Or was it that under her leadership as MD and CEO, Edelweiss Asset Management has grown to $9 billion in managed assets? There’s so much to learn from Radhika Gupta and in this conversation, she shares with us the following: -Her experience growing up as the daughter of an Indian diplomat and living in India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Italy and the US and her top advice for someone who’s never lived or worked outside their city or country-Going through rejection after rejection after college, and finally getting an offer from McKinsey in Boston, where she met the senior partner who had a reputation of being a tough cookie. Radhika shares her  mindset on how to prepare for something when one has been through recent adversity and even suicidal thoughts.-As a shy person not fond of public speaking, what it is that made her agree to do the famous talk ‘The Girl with the Broken Neck?- Upon returning to India, Radhika thought “clients would bend over backwards to give me their money. I was wrong. The reality of running a business with no revenue, taking home no salary led to lots of self-doubt.” Radhika shares the juicy story of how she got hired by her very first paying client.-Her formula of hiring ‘misfits’ and why it worksRadhika's content discussed during the conversation:The Girl with the Broken Neck: https://youtu.be/GVZScZFGHVAThe article from August 2021 on Overcoming Barriers and Hiring Misfits: https://morningstar.in/posts/64636/raFollow Radhika on LinkedIn and Twitter:https://www.linkedin.com/in/radhikagupta2/https://twitter.com/iRadhikaGupta-------------------------------------------------------------Liked this episode? 46. Dan Reed: Networking Secrets from The Career Dad

How did someone who studied Shakespeare Romance and Tragedy get hired at Barclays Bank and Adobe?!  In 2021, Barclays was rated by a Linkedin Study as the #1 best employer in the UK and Adobe has consistently figured in the Fortune magazine list of best workplaces. My guest today, Dan Reed, has worked in both these sought-after companies. So I know advice will be useful to many of you.  Yet what drew me to a conversation with Dan was something else.  He is part of a growing tribe of Dads who talk about being a Dad, who want a rewarding and successful career, but not at the expense of family. And second, Dan recently started at Adobe in Digital Strategy, after 7 years at Barclays bank, and there’s an insightful story on how he got hired at Adobe, which holds lessons for many jobseekers today.  In this episode we talk about: - The exact steps Dan took to secure a job and grow at Barclays, coming from a non-traditional background- Wearing full arm tattoos at the workplace, and how and why he got inked as a teenager, considering his fear of needles!- The very personal reason Dan started his blog and podcast “The Career Dad”, how it’s resonated with men around the world and how it’s promoting gender equality- The ‘networking’ strategy Dan used to get noticed and hired at Adobe. 45. How to Deal with Bias in Recruitment | Sonalogues

My very first guest on this podcast shared how he changed his name (as an experiment) in order to get better responses to his CV. Sounds extreme, but bias is something many jobseekers say they are concerned about, whether it is ageism, sexism, classism or racism.  So how do you deal with biases and discrimination in the recruitment process? I had a conversation on exactly this topic with Virginia Franco, a leading resume writer based in North Carolina, which is being replayed in this Sonologue. I also believe there are two types of people, when it comes to careers: Complainers and ObtainersComplainers blame their problems on everyone or everything else, yet take no action to fix their situation. Obtainers accept their challenges, embrace them, act on them and overcome them. This holds also for how you deal with Bias. You can complain about it, or you can act to minimize it by focusing on what is in your span of control. I read this quote in December 2019, and I think about it nearly every single day:The best years of your life are the ones in which you decide your problems are your OWN. You do not blame them on your mother, the economy or the president. You realise that you control your OWN destiny. ~Albert EllisSo do give a listen to this short snippet and I hope it’s useful in tuning up your own approach. If interested in the full conversation, click here.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Liked this episode? 44. David Lancefield: Fastrack your Career

My guest today David Lancefield and I met during a storytelling mastermind, and I was fascinated by his backstory of how he made partner at Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) when he was just 32 years old. That’s a really young age to make it to this level in the consulting industry and I wanted to dig deeper to get insights for all of you on what are the factors that lie behind such a “Fast Track Career”. Whether you are interested in a career in the consulting industry or not, this conversation will prove very useful for you. We go through David’s 24 year fast track career at PwC and also what made him leave it all behind, and start his own venture in the midst and peak of the biggest pandemic ever.  In this episode, David shares the following: - Best interview advice he ever received, which happened to be from his mother - What helped him to become a partner at 32, and here he breaks down his process and shares his favorite tips to help others to move up the corporate ladder  - What he did to select influential mentors, and the role they played to help him get noticed by the right people for the right opportunities - How to make sure your consulting clients love you - Those infamous case interviews! Yes, we talked about what David looks for in a potential consultant, including what NOT to do, which is some of the most useful advice I’ve ever heard - What made David start a new venture, in the midst of the biggest pandemic ever. What it really is like when you are self-employed, and how he got his first paying client Whatever your profession, some of the tips from this conversation can definitely apply to you and just may help you to fast track your own career! This in the LinkedIn post by David I referred to during the episodeWhile there, follow him on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/davidclancefield/Follow David Lancefield on Twitter: https://twitter.com/DlancefieldDavid’s website: https://davidlancefield.com/ Sign up to David’s newsletter: https://davidlancefield.com/newsletter/-----------------------Liked this episode? 24. Dirk De Muynck: From Saving Reputations to Saving Lives

This is probably one of the most unique career stories you would have ever heard.  Dirk De Muynck had it all: a cushy executive job at a large Swedish automotive giant, a comfortable life and wide acclaim as a manager of reputation. Till one day in 2014 when it was all taken away from him and Dirk had to re-invent himself.  One day, in the midst of a traffic jam, Dirk had an epiphany that not only changed his life, but the lives of hundreds of people in Belgium. He moved from being a savior of reputations, to a savior of lives. Dirk runs CoolXpress, a medical transport company, that uses motorcycles to  transport medical tissue, liquids and pharma products to hospitals. He and his team often race against time on Belgium’s hyper-congested highways to get donor body organs to operating rooms across the country.   In this special episode, Dirk talks about: - How a hand-written letter he sent started his career at Volvo in the 1990's  - A bizarre interview with his future boss which didn't exactly go as he expected - How he handled the painful separation from Volvo after nearly two decades there - How he returned to an old, forgotten hobby that drove him, literally, towards his eureka moment - How he pitched his business idea dozens of times facing rejection after rejection, until he saw success with one of the world’s largest humanitarian organizations – the Red Cross This is a very special episode which teaches us that we can reinvent ourselves at any time in our life.
