The tragic murder of PnB Rock forces us to once again have to examine what's going on with, what seems to be, increased violence and attacks on hip hop artist. You probably also know about the struggles you they had with finding their sound, with Shawna trying to rap "woke" lyrics over trap beats. That led to our conversation about the marriage between the content of raps and the beats they're laid over. Is it that certain lyrics that are deemed to be "negative" actually sound better over certain beats? Is it possible to be "conscious" and still be appealing when rapping over trap beats? If you have listened to our podcast in the past, you know that subjectivity is a common theme. Some people--*cough* Milan *cough*--seem to struggle with what is a fact versus opinion when it comes to music. When it comes to hip hop debates, separating what we like from what is objectively bad can sometimes be challenging. In this episode, we make subjectivity the main focus to solve this disagreement once and for all. At least that was the hope. Recorded weeks ago, just as it was announced that Breonna Taylor’s killers would not be charged with murder, we explore what expectations we [should] have from artists. We also discuss the concept of being seen without being a distraction, the need for balance between acknowledgement of current trends and maintaining joy, and  how this twilight zone that is 2020 has influenced how we’re experiencing the world. We went longer between recording than we usually do, so a lot had transpired between episodes. Because of that, it took us way too long to determine what we would even talk about, but we were already saying a lot, so we just hit record and went from there. During our review of Royce's "The Allegory," Milan claimed that Royce shouldn't have experimented with producing the whole album himself and just stuck to his "normal" format. The mainstream and underground scenes have changed quite a bit lately. Or have they? In this episode, we discuss whether or not the mainstream has officially squeezed out underground artists, or if they can still thrive in their lane? As usual, there is a difference in opinion. Yes, we know it's been out for a minute now. But if you follow the podcast, you know we still had to do the review and post it because, between the three of us, feelings about Jay-Z span everywhere from almost no respect (Milan), to appreciation (Dev), to one of the greatest of all time (Landon). This was definitely a different Jay we got on this album, so we had to discuss. We also had our friend and special guest, Mike Waller, join us for this one, so it was a fun one to record. On this episode, we have two guests: longtime friend to the podcast David Johnson and first time guest,  Dev's MC, Lars Phontaine. Lars actually brought this topic to us and wanted to discuss, so here it is! And you know Dave has to join anytime we talk battle raps. Basically, we discuss whether or not the skill of MCing is dimished due to the battle rap scene. In typical hip hop debate fashion, we end up talking about other stuff, but that's the main focus. People love to use longevity as one of the main reasons for claiming somebody is one of the greatest rappers all time. It's also used to justify not putting younger artists in the conversation. But  in this episode, we question whether or not longevity is often overrated. Not that it shouldn't be factored in at all, but do we overstate how important it is when so many artists' legacy are really based on their first 2-3 albums? So, our review of Kendrick's album went from a review to trying to figure out where he ranks all time. In Part 2, we not only discuss where he stands, but how we should be ranking the greats in general. Here's our initial review of Kendrick's latest work. This got us talking so much, we had to break it up into two parts. As hip hop get pushed further into the mainsteam (if that's even possible) through shows like "Empire" and plays like "Hamilton," we discuss whether or not these things help or harm hip hop overall. No, we have not gone completely crazy. We're not arguing that this new form of hip hop is genius or that it is even great. However, it is important for us critics to take a step back and make sure that we are not turning into the same generation that thought hip hop was the worst thing to happen to Black and Brown people since the Klan. So, we discuss all the reasons this is not the same, but also the few things (however small they might be) that this new generation of "rappers" is actually offering. In the great words of Ice Cube, it's time to "check yo self" and make verify if your critiques of these new artists is just that or if you've become the old person that's simply out of touch. Michel'le's "Surviving Compton" was just recently released, Nate Parker was caught in a media whirlwind as "Birth of a Nation" was being released, and Trump continues to ramble on about "locker room talk." What do all of these things have in common, the abuse and assault on women. We discuss how all of them interact and the role hip hop plays in this abuse. We also discuss how, even in the midst of it being about women, their voices typically go unheard. For all we talk about rappers stepping up and doing their part to address all of the issues of our community, we obviously had to discuss the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile. We were all a little heavy recording this, but it was good to be able to process and talk through these emotions, what role we feel we can play to help make a change, and the role we expect hip hop to play. Given what interpret as an entire diss track full of subliminals, we discuss exactly what the state of diss records currently are. As promised, we dedicated more time to the allegations brought against Afrika Bambaataa and examine it from several different perspectives, specifically as it pertains to hip-hop and how we tend to view view our heroes as the flawed individuals they are. We're back! Dev is officially married and getting settled in and now we're back to recording! In an age where mixtapes are released at record rates, we debate how much influence a mixtape determines an artist's place in history. Why are mixtapes not viewed with the same level of respect as albums (or are they)? Should they be? Are their different types of mixtapes (album quality vs. promotional)? As mentioned on the Facebook page, we haven't been able to record a tribute to Phife since Dev was busy preparing to get married. Congrats again to our co-host and officially newest member to the family! In celebration of his wedding, here is the episode we recorded a while back (as you'll be able to tell based upon what we reference) where we discuss marriage's place in hip-hop and how it is typically viewed amongst people in hip-hop culture. Phife verses open and close the show instead of our typical intro beat to pay homage to one of hip-hop's greatest heroes. Kendrick Lamar's Grammy performance last week was memorable to say the very least. So, we obviously had to talk about it. We talk about our reaction to the performance, respond to those that say Kendrick Lamar is "safe" in the eyes of white America (even after that performance), the reaction of the white people in the audience, and much more.
