EP 46: Dealing with Crap Magnets

Every day in corporate America companies deal with “crap magnets”. What is a crap magnet? Someone who’s first to gossip, holds grudges, and has a lot to say about what’s wrong in an organization without any real solutions. Almost every work environment has them. If left unchecked, they could start to suck others into their downward spiral of negativity. Sound familiar? Could you be a crap magnet? How do you deal with crap magnets? In addition to behaviors mentioned above, crap magnets often vent their frustrations at inappropriate times. If you to held a meeting to talk about negativity in the workplace, they would wait until the meeting is over to voice their frustrations. And they most complain to peers. Crap magnets rarely voice dissent to supervisors.Leaders, don’t let this behavior take hold. If you’re infested with crap magnets, try this three-step process:1 – Call them out.Crap magnets prefer to operate from the sidelines. Bringing their behavior to everyone’s attention can be uncomfortable. Which leads to #22 – Ask them to vent their frustrations in a safe environment.Crap magnets feel there is a reward for complaining outside of a meeting because they believe they can get others on their side without having to actually fix the problem. You don’t want to fight a crap magnet, you just want to get to the bottom of their attitude. Sometimes crap magnets are a symptom of a bigger workplace issue.3 – Encourage your team not to enable crap magnets. The key to high performing workplaces starts with communication, trust, and emotional intelligence. Open the lines of communication to find out exactly why someone feels so sour about their work situation. Open communication builds an environment of trust. Show your team that you trust them enough to not indulge “crap magnet” behavior.Want to work help companies deal with crap magnets? 360 Solutions has the leadership development tools and training you need to start, build, and run your own leadership development company. EP 43: Controlling vs. Empowering Leaders

Is it better to control or empower? Sometimes successful business leaders let their leading roles get the best of them…and not in a good way. There are two common leadership styles: controlling and empowering. Controllers impose external controls on their followers to keep them in line. This negatively affects employees and work they produce. Controlling leaders fear something being done wrong. What’s missing is trust. A strong level of trust with your team will help you communicate more effectively. A trusted team is an empowered team.Empowering leaders understand the capabilities of their team. They delegate tasks based on what they think each person can handle. They allow their team to grow and do more than they may have thought possible. They check to see if they need any help. They don’t do the project for them. Remember the old adage: “Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” Constant communication and feedback are critical. One recent study wanted to see how kids dealt with boundaries. One school had recess on a playground with no fence. Another school had recess on a playground with a fence. In both scenarios, teachers stayed inside to let the kids make up their own minds about what to do. On the playground without a fence, the kids stayed closer together. Even though they had no boundaries, they were afraid to explore the unknown. The students with a fence ventured out and explored every inch within the fence. If you give employees boundaries, they’ll take more risks while staying inside the boundaries. Those who aren’t given clearly defined boundaries tend to play it safe since. They don’t understand their limits. They’re not sure how they’ll be graded.Empowered employees perform better because they understand what they’re doing, why they’re doing it, and the strategy and goals they’re trying to achieve. The best way to lead is to empower, trust, and give employees the autonomy to do the work inside set boundaries. Clarify the mission and values of your organization, get all members on the same page, and your business will thrive. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

EP 30: Trust in the Workplace

Parents teach their children (or at least should) to be kind to others, to be trustworthy, and to work hard. The lessons we learn as children are the keys to creating trust in the workplace. In this podcast, we talk with 360 Solution Strategic Partner Jay Mathis talks about trust in the workplace. Jay has been a partner since 2008. He’s also a pastor at Grace Church in Waco, Texas. Jay works with large and small companies, city governments, and non-profits.Jay talks about ways to create a win-win atmosphere in the workplace, including:Listening emphaticallyFinding out what’s important to others – ask them. We’re terrible at listening as a culture.Avoid absolute statements like always and never.Look for similarities and areas of commonality.Listening emphatically means being actively engaged with whomever is speaking. This is a sign of respect as well as just simple manners. People like good manners, it helps to build trust.Asking others about themselves is a staple to trust building. How can anyone fully trust someone that doesn’t care about anyone but themselves? The better you know your coworkers, the more productive you will be in group meetings and projects.A huge mistake that people make in the workplace is using absolutes like always and never. It is so common in today’s culture to exaggerate and using absolutes has become too common. It can lead to major miscommunication which will kill your trustworthiness. If you want people to trust you, you’ve got to become their friend. That starts with relating with them on a personal level.Building trust in the workplace is vital to success and happiness. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

EP 13: 7 components of an organization with Chip Wilson

Today we’re talking with Co-Host Chip Wilson about the seven components of an organization. Chip has spoken around the globe for the past 20 years about developing leaders and transforming organizations. We’re putting some of these talks up as podcasts in a segment we’re calling “Chip Clips”.Chip talks about the Transformation Model in this talk, so here’s a little more information for context:The Transformation Model is the framework we use to help leaders understand their organizations and also guide a successful redesign. The model reduces the complexity of an organization to eight key variables that must be understood and aligned for a business to be successful. Alignment implies a holistic or systems point of view that finds the best “fit” between all organizational elements. Paying attention to and understanding these variables will result in major improvements in customer service, quality, efficiency, cycle time, profitability and satisfaction of employees.
