In keeping with the series we just finished, six episodes on the threat of the Chinese Communist party, we are bringing you some bonus episodes, focusing on parts of the China story that we may have only covered tangentially or what to spend more time on. First up, an episode on the quiet killer that has taken the lives of thousands of Americans per year for the last several years: fentanyl. Since 2014, we’ve seen continuous, disturbing growth in the number of deaths due to overdose from synthetic opioids, most of them fentanyl. For this bonus episode, we’re pulling in a conversation from the Daily Signal Podcast which originally aired in January of this year, between our reporter Samantha Aescheris and Derek Maltz, a veteran of the Drug Enforcement Administration and expert on fentanyl. ---The Daily Signal Podcast: https://www.dailysignal.com/podcasts/More China Research from the Heritage Foundation: www.heritage.org/chinaWinning the New Cold War: A Plan for Countering China: https://www.heritage.org/asia/report/winning-the-new-cold-war-plan-countering-chinaThe Kevin Roberts Show: https://www.heritage.org/the-kevin-roberts-show Hosted on Acast. The Chinese Spy Balloon Visits Heritage | Heritage Explains: China | Episode 2

Obviously, the Cold War in which we find ourselves with China is a global event. But it already has a strong impact on our lives right here in the United States. These effects are visible in a lot of ways, which we're going to talk about here today. Some will surprise you, but some will feel familiar, like one from late January of this year. Many of our listeners will recall the large balloon that was spotted over the Midwest, and was tracked by the government as it crossed over the United States. Federal officials shot the balloon down when it passed over the Atlantic Ocean on February 4. We now know that this was a Chinese spy balloon carrying sophisticated surveillance equipment, and was actually capable of maneuvering itself. For example, it flew in figure eight patterns over numerous US Military sites. On this episode of Heritage Explains, we re-enact this event at Heritage and dig into the other ways that China is involving itself within United States borders. We discuss these issues with China expert Michael Pillsbury. ---More China Research from the Heritage Foundation: www.heritage.org/chinaMichael Pillsbury's Book: The 100-Year MarathonWinning the New Cold War: A Plan for Countering China: https://www.heritage.org/asia/report/winning-the-new-cold-war-plan-countering-chinaThe Kevin Roberts Show: https://www.heritage.org/the-kevin-roberts-show Hosted on Acast. The Coffeemaker Problem | Heritage Explains: China | Episode 1

Today, we are very excited to bring Heritage Explains to a new serialized format. That means that instead of one-off episodes, we are bringing you short series of shows, focused on explaining a particular topic. Why? Because we at Heritage know that we are at a crucial time in our nation's history. There are a few key issues that we must get right. And this topic, the one we're doing right now, as we speak, is one of them: The Threat of the Chinese Communist Party. China is the biggest security threat facing American and the world right now. But sometimes, it can be hard to believe that. For instance, if China is such a big enemy, why can't I find a coffeemaker that's made in the US? Heritage President Dr. Kevin Roberts and Director of Asian Studies Center Jeff Smith help explain. ---More China Research from the Heritage Foundation: www.heritage.org/chinaWinning the New Cold War: A Plan for Countering China: https://www.heritage.org/asia/report/winning-the-new-cold-war-plan-countering-chinaThe Kevin Roberts Show: https://www.heritage.org/the-kevin-roberts-show Hosted on Acast. Will the Supreme Court Hold Big Tech Accountable?

Remember when social media sites helped legitimized the now-discredited Steele Dossier, labeled the Hunter Biden laptop story as fake, and completely removed a sitting President of the United States from their platforms? These (and many others) are the reasons for the growing distrust for Big Tech. But recently, the US Supreme Court announced they will hear a case that will potentially provide valuable guidance as to the scope and application of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996. This is the federal statute that allows immunity to social media companies for what other people post on their platforms and also the power to remove content at their discretion. On this episode, we talk about the case as a way to hold big tech accountable, the potential outcomes, and get valuable insight as to where the justices might land in their decision. Show Notes: Big Tech’s Big Moment Finally Arrives at Supreme Court Hosted on Acast. The left continues to push the narrative that so-called "gender-affirming care" for kids (puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones) is necessary to prevent youth suicide. But in reality, the data tell a totally different story, and parents are often kept in the dark. On this episode, we talk with Jay Greene about his new report that shows "gender-affirming care" is not only dangerous for kids, but also why parents (not government) must be empowered to make decisions for their kids. Show NotesPuberty Blockers, Cross-Sex Hormones, and Youth Suicide - https://www.heritage.org/gender/report/puberty-blockers-cross-sex-hormones-and-youth-suicideDoes “Gender-Affirming Care” For Trans Kids Actually Prevent Suicide? Why the U.S. Should Recognize Somaliland (Feat. His Excellency Muse Bihi Abdi)

Have you heard of Somaliland? It has been de facto independent for 30 years, and they have taken great strides to pursue democracy, free speech, and free market ideas. Because of this, the U.S. should recognize Somaliland as an independent country. In practice, the territory is not now, nor is likely to be, a part of Somalia. Acknowledging that reality would allow Washington to create more effective policy in an important and contested region. In addition, a strong relationship with an independent Somaliland could potentially benefit the US, as we try to hedge against Chinese influence in the region. On this episode, Heritage Foundation expert, Josh Meservey, joins us to explain. It was recently released that the Biden administration essentially begged China to try and sway Putin to not invade Ukraine. Big Defeats Against The Left's Effort to Damage Election Security

Lori Lightfoot says "Bye Bye" to the Chicago Bears?

When the news broke that the owners of the Chicago Bears football team purchased a massive piece of property in a suburb 30 miles outside of Downtown Chicago, the narrative quickly developed that The Bears could be leaving their historic stadium for the suburbs.  Many news outlets say it’s because the owners see more opportunity to make profit, they'll have an easier time with things like sports betting, generational change in ownership, or maybe it’s just time.  But we wonder if there are other factors at work here.  In this episode, our friend Stephen Moore joins us for a fun discussion on the other factors that could be lending to the Bears organization considering leaving their historic home in Downtown Chicago, and the policy consequences that come with it.Show Notes:Heritage Foundation WorkMeet Kim Foxx, the Rogue Prosecutor Whose Policies are Wreaking Havoc in ChicagoHeritage Foundation’s effort to push back on the massive reconciliation bill currently being pushed by The Left on Capitol Hill Steve Moore on the damage leftist policies have caused in ChicagoIllinois Policy Institute Work:Will the Chicago Bears Stay In the CityEnrollment in Chicago Public School Has Declined by Nearly 25,000Illinois Rising Property Taxes and Pension Debt Hosted on Acast. The Biden administration's historic crisis at the southern border has reached a fever pitch in Del Rio, TX. The most frustrating part is that it was entirely avoidable. On this episode, we talk about how Del Rio is just a snapshot of what's happen at the southern border, and what is likely to happen if this path continues. September 11, 2001 - It's been 20 Years

It's been 20 years since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. It's hard to describe in a short blurb what that day has meant for Americans, and all that has changed because of it. So this week, we wanted to take a special look at and acknowledge the calamity, chaos, and confusion, but also look at the tremendous heroism of first responders, men and woman in uniform, and the incredible charity displayed by everyday Americans. We also talk with Steve Bucci. He was the military assistant to Sec. Donald Rumsfeld on September 11, and recounts being in the Pentagon when the plane hit including the great story of Sec. Rumsfeld pulling wounded people out of the Pentagon. He saw (first hand) the best of Americans in the face of such incredibly dark circumstances. Given the incredibly challenging circumstances we are currently facing in Afghanistan, Bucci also calls on policymakers to be bold in addressing the threats we face today. Hosted on Acast. Welfare Reform - Where We're Going (Part 3)

Michelle and I have been looking back on the great success of the bi partisan welfare reform act of 1996. In Part 1, Robert Rector told us that in order to serve the 1 in 7 American children who were dependent on government aid, we needed to do two things: first: require work in exchange for welfare, and second: strengthen families. In part 2, we heard that as a result of achieving these, welfare caseloads (which had not dropped significantly in 50 years) promptly fell by 60%, the child poverty rate suddenly dropped by a third (after being static for a quarter century), and the poverty rate for single-parent families has dropped by two-thirds since reform. But the Biden Administration and liberals in Congress are trying to upend these incredible successes, by giving welfare to people under the name of "tax credits", and requiring virtually nothing to get it. On this episode, Former Senator Rick Santorum joins us to talk about his role in passing welfare reform in 1996, and what we must do to pushback against The Left's attempt to rob people of the dignity of work. Welfare Reform - How We Got Here (Part 1)

It's been 25 years since President Clinton signed into law sweeping welfare reform. But while this massive bi-partisan victory did a lot to strengthen families and sanction the dignity of work from the highest levels of government, a victory 25 years ago doesn't not necessarily mean victory for the next 25 years. Today, President Biden and liberals in Congress are now looking to completely end these successful reforms, and replace them with policies that have been proven not to work. On this episode, we look at the lead up to welfare reform, the politics, the posturing, and of course the success. In addition, we look at the current situation here in DC and why it's crucial to pushback against the left's attempts to upend welfare reform.Show Notes:Reversing Welfare Reform and Returning to “Welfare As We Knew It”Bait and Switch: Biden Child-Allowance “Tax Relief” Overturns Welfare ReformCongress Should Reject Efforts to Restore “Welfare as We Knew It” by Expanding Child CreditsThe Biden Child Allowance: Examining the Impact of Welfare on Work Hosted on Acast. What do you know about inflation? Milton Friedman famously said: " Inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon, in the sense that it is and can be produced only by a more rapid increase in the quantity of money than in output." Woke Corporate Capitalism

In 2015 Ross Douthat coined the term "woke capitalism" when writing a piece for the New York Times. He defined it as how companies signal their support for progressive causes in order to maintain their influence in society. He really tapped into something. Since then, this mindset has only grown, as the largest corporations are now weighing in of almost every major (and not-so-major) public policy issue. The problem: they increasingly land on the "leftist" side of the issue. So what is the impact? Is this a coordinated effort? What is the antidote to this "corporate wokeness" infiltrating our largest American companies? On this episode, Andy Olivastro joins us to weigh in with a unique perspective. They are then replaced by rogues who usurp the constitutional role of the legislative branch by refusing to prosecute entire categories of crime.
