On 21 August, 1969, an extremist Australian Christian, Dennis Michael Rohan, attempted to set fire to Masjidul Al-Aqsa Mosque – a significant moment in the history of this sacred mosque. The fire destroyed some of Jerusalem's most historic landmarks, including a 1,000-year-old pulpit. It’s believed Dennis Rohan’s actions had the blessing of the Israeli occupation forces. Some 51 years later, the Noble Sanctuary of Al-Aqsa remains under as great a threat as ever. The attempt to reopen the compound came upon an order from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, after it had been closed following a deadly shooting attack inside the compound that left two Israeli border policemen killed and three Palestinian assailants shot dead on Friday. On Sunday, VOC spoke to Palestinian archeologist Dr Abeer Ahmed Zayyad who lives close to Masjidul Aqsa. She visited SA in April this year. Dr Abeer holds a Masters Degree in Archaeology and has been involved in the preservation of Masjidul Aqsa and its surrounding areas. She has been deeply involved in exposing an Israeli narrative aimed at usurping the Noble Sanctuary for Zionist objectives.
