THROWBACK: Black Friday Prisoner's Dilemma - How a clever idea screwed everyone and how it's changing + Thanksgiving food hot takes
This episode was originally published in 2021. As we spend Thanksgiving in Arizona, we hope you enjoy this blast from the past.
Contact: gametheorymedia1@gmail.com
If you've been grossed out by the fact that stores opened on Thanksgiving day for Black Friday discounts, you're not alone. But, what if I said it wasn't their fault? They kind of had to. But, the worst part, is that shoppers also kind of had to.
Black Friday is as American as Thanksgiving, but it's been starting earlier and earlier. It doesn't net the stores as much profit as you think and shoppers have to participate if they want the best deals. It's a vicious double prisoner's dilemma that must be stopped.
Thankfully, in recent years, the trend has been reversed.
In this episode, how Black Friday screws everyone, how it started, and how it's changing.

Fraudster III: How One Wine Genius Named Rudy Made Rich Wine Collectors His Patsies
In this episode, Fraudster Files is back for chapter III -- Rudy Kurniawan.
Sign up for the Game Theory Newsletter: https://www.aweber.com/users/landing_pages/import/edd1ed06-af90-4c3a-a41c-bd1096ce45cb
Rudy has a natural gift for taste. He put that gift to use in the most lucrative way possible -- he hoodwinked the world of elite wine collections. Rudy was born in the 1970s in Indonesia where his family has (allegedly) participated in one of the biggest bank heists in world history. (His great-uncle stole hundreds of millions in a fraudulent situation.)
Now, after serving his time for ripping off rich people, he has been deported to Indonesia, but his crime remains one of the most infamous and entertaining in recent memory.

Hunt a Deer to Together: The Stag Hunt Problem
In this episode, the boys review an element of Game Theory that seems to fly in the face of every basic tenant of self-interest.
The Stag Hunt, established by French Philosopher Jean-Jacque Rousseau in his work "Discourse on Inequality," creates a game wherein two hunters can either work together to secure a large shared bounty or work separately for a significantly smaller bounty.
This contradicts the Prisoner's Dilemma in which self-interest is always the rational move. In the Stag Hunt, collaboration is the way to go.

The players who were thought to have been involved were eventually banned for life with the legendary shoeless Joe Jackson perhaps falsely accused.

Las Vegas Raiders and Los Angeles Chargers agree to tie - why this would never work a real life NFL Prisoner's Dilemma
On January 9, 2022 the LV Raiders and LA Chargers will play a football game wherein a tie could be a win-win scenario for both teams. The Raiders and Chargers (if the Indianapolis Colts lose at 1 p.m. est) could both make the NFL playoffs with a tie in the final regular season game of 2021/22.
This NFL Prisoner's dilemma at once both completely different than the classic Game Theory concept and exactly the same as the original dilemma.
In this episode, Nick and Chris quickly examine what makes this different, what makes it the same, and what the teams should do.

The Empty Fort Strategy - the craziest military bluff ever
In medieval Chinese myth, a brilliant writer and strategizer documented the best strategies of the day in a book called the thirty-six stratagems. In the separation subsection, there's a bluff called the "Empty Fort Strategy."
This strategy is so crazy, that it just might work.
It enters into the realm of reverse and reverse-reverse psychology in the manner that a bluff in poker does.
In this episode, the guys talk about the Empty Fort Strategy, military bluffs, and general one-upmanship in competition

Cicada survival strategies and how they relate to the capitol riots and the malice at the palace
Ep 8
YouTube: https://bit.ly/3igjccJ
Cicadas are so unathletic and unimpressive that they need a weird adaptation to survive. That adaptation is power in numbers. When they emerge, there are far too many of them for predators to eat them all. Also, they aren't above ground for long enough for preditors to adapt and focus solely on them.
Humans do something similar in large groups or mobs. Think of the infamous Malice at the palace or the capitol riots. In those cases, there are going to be some people who participated just passively enough to get away with it because the authorities just can't possible get them all.
