[Q&A] Can I Put In-House Work in My Portfolio?
This episode's question came in via email.
Nico works as a designer for a company right now, and he wants to start freelancing on the side and build a business.
He said, “I was thinking of creating a portfolio, including the projects I've completed in my current company, but in a fictitious way (use different names, organizations, etc.) Also, state that this is a fictional project but that the process and outputs are the same. Do you think this will work to close deals?
If you were a company that would be reviewing my portfolio, would you think that I'm experienced or just someone trying to fool you?”
Note: we are not attorneys, and we will not even touch the question of if it’s something legal or not. We are not providing legal advice in any way. This type of advice should be provided by a certified professional, and we are not.

[Q&A] Am I Wrong to Turn Down This Client?
Today's question comes from Emma Noel, a member of our Facebook Mastermind Group.
She says, "How do I politely turn down a client? I had a Zoom meeting with a potential client, and we left off with me saying I'd sent her a proposal. But since then, I've decided I don't want to work with her anymore. Apparently, she and her husband run two businesses. The client says she knows how to do everything but doesn't have the time, which is why they're hiring me. It sounds like there'll be a pain to work with. And I'd rather not deal with the hassle. So how do I politely say I'm not interested?

[Q&A] How to Invoice for Extra Work
Today's question comes from our free Facebook Mastermind Group.
Laura MCFalls says, "I ended up doing more work than was included in a proposal I sent to a client and forgot to send an updated estimate as promised. So now I'm wondering, do I send an invoice for the entire amount and hope that they're not upset? Or what should I do? For what it's worth, the client was fully aware of how much extra work there was and they were asking for the extra work. And when they went over the original scope, they were aware of it. So nothing was a surprise."

[Q&A] Am I Offering Too Many Services?
In today's SHORT, Brittany says, "I'm a freelance designer and a marketer located in New York. My question is, how do you keep clients engaged once they've signed on? I have a few clients that have signed up for monthly marketing support, etc, but the problem is, I can't get anything out of them. I need content and updates. I've tried emails, I've tried setting up monthly check in meetings, but nothing seems to really work. And because of this, I feel I'm failing them. They're paying their bills. But at the end of the day, I don't feel good about it, because my results aren't what they could be. I would love any advice."
We've chatted about this in a full length episode previously, but it's been a while. We've probably learned something since then. So, we'll do our best to answer Brittany's question.

[Q&A] Will ChatGPT Kill Freelancing?
Today's question comes from Laura Bean. Laura submitted a question at freelance to founder.com/ask. And I love this question because it's been on my mind lately. Clay and I talked before we hit record about this AI and artificial intelligence and how it impacts our freelancer jobs.
She said, "The recent launch of chat GPT and other AI advances have led me to question how I future-proof my business." So just for context, she's a copywriter. And I think I think writers are mainly concerned right now, but I digress. She says, "How do I future-proof my business in a world where I am in a profession that AI could completely take over? I don't think it's there yet. But it means significant changes to my industry. I'm sure I'm not the only copywriter with concerns. However, despite concerns, I also want to learn how to embrace this technology. Have you any thoughts about how you future proof of service-based business potentially competing with AI, or how we as copywriters integrate AI into our services?"

You're listening to our brand-new Freelance to Founder SHORTS, 5-10 minute episodes answering one (or two) questions from listeners like you.
To submit your question, visit FreelanceToFounder.com/ASK, and we'll feature you on an upcoming episode.

Today's question comes from Dan Gilbert.
How can I take that jump from zero employees to one employee?
He said, "the last five years, I've made the same amount of revenue per year, and I've decided I want to change that. Between production work, selling, marketing, and accounting. I have a lot going on, but I don't make enough to hire someone yet." And so then he asks the question, "How can I take the jump from zero employees to one? Should I hire contractors instead? So I can focus more on selling and less on doing production work?
We'll have some awesome things to share with Dan here!

Today's question comes from Travis Hostetter. He says, "I'm only a month into freelancing. I've just made $95 with another $500 on the way. The flexibility I have with my time is amazing. But losing a strong W-2 income has been hard. I'm in a position financially where I can be patient, but there are also operating opportunities to earn significant income as an employee. What are some of the biggest pros or positives of being a 1099 freelancer. How can being a 1099 outweigh the W-2 when the taxes are so high?"
He's basically struggling to decide if really this freelancing thing is worth it when there's so many higher-paying opportunities out there.

Today's SHORT was a surprise. I usually read these to Clay beforehand, but I totally blindsided him with this one. It came from our Mastermind Group. It's free Facebook group, with 12,000 of us in there. It's a blast, and we learn a ton from each other. This person submitted their question anonymously, so that's exciting. They said, "have you guys tried coming back as a different brand?".

Today's question comes from Prithvi in the Millo Mastermind Group.
It's just a free Facebook group of 11,000 freelancers hanging out, asking questions, learning from one another. It's a lot of fun.
Prithvi's question is, "How do I explain to my client that it's going to take time to increase the number of website visitors and he isn't going to get 100 website visitors overnight?"
So it's obvious that Prithvi does maybe some SEO work, some online traffic, or online marketing. I think the real question is like, "how do I manage expectations? I have a client who wants results like yesterday, but I know that real valuable results are going to take some time."

To submit your question, visit FreelanceToFounder.com/ASK and we'll feature you on an upcoming episode.
Today's question comes from Annie Milner, who was on the show previously. It was great to hear back from her again.
She says, "I have a question. I haven't raised my rates in two to three years, partly due to COVID. I currently charge $75 per hour.
Do you think that's it's too drastic to raise to $85 per hour? Important to note that I quote on a per project basis, so it's unlikely most clients will even notice.
I'm about to write a new contract with a retainer client, though, who actually nudged me about raising my rates. So really, the question is, you know, can I raise my rates? Should I raise my rates?"

[Q&A] Should I Give Up Files for Free?
You're listening to our brand-new Freelance to Founder SHORTS, 5-10 minute episodes answering one (or two) questions from listeners like you.
To submit your question, visit FreelanceToFounder.com/ASK and we'll feature you on an upcoming episode.
Today's question comes from our Free Mastermind Group on Facebook.
Kevin asks this question, "Two years ago, I did a rebrand for an old work colleague and his company. It went down well and was well received. Yesterday, their Marketing Manager got in touch saying that they've been making a few tweaks to some of their documents internally and wanted to update the brand guidelines document reflecting this.
They were asking if I was able to share the packaged design files with them?
Now I know the owner but part of me goes 'hang on, I don't want to share the InDesign Brand Guidelines file with them as that's losing potential work for me, or maybe if they have someone else doing brand work then they just want my file'?
Where do people stand on this? Or am I overthinking it? I don't want to fall out with my old colleague but at the same time feel a bit weird about giving them the deck to do what they want with it for free?"

In today's short, I want to answer one of the most common questions we get in our Facebook group.
Multiple times a week, we have freelancers ask about pricing.
What should I charge for a specific service?
How much should I charge to send files?
Am I charging too little? Or too much?
So, in response, I’d like to share a few of my thoughts on what your freelance pricing says about you.

Should Managers Code?—Introducing 'Compiler', an original podcast from Red Hat
To listen to more episodes or subscribe to Compiler, click here.
Technology can be bold. But it can also be complicated. Compiler breaks down the big questions about tech and the tech industry in this new original podcast.
On today's bonus episode, I share with you a brand new podcast called 'Compiler', an original podcast from Red Hat.
Becoming a manager can be a triumphant milestone of working life. It’s often a recognition of leadership and, in the tech industry, technical skill. Many argue those skills necessarily become casualties to the management track. But it’s hard to let go of your creative side to make room for managing others. Can they do both? Should managers code? It’s an old question that never seems to receive a clear answer.
From the Red Hat offices to the moons of Jupiter, Compiler explores why it’s such a complex issue. We spoke with Red Hatters who are vocal about what role, if any, managers have in the code base—and why they fight to keep their hands on keys for as long as they can.

I Caught Covid-19 and Lost Half My Business. But Then....
Imagine catching the coronavirus and losing half of your clients in less than 48 hours. That's what happened to today's guest, Jim Huffman. Jim runs GrowthHit, a conversion-focused agency serving tech companies and startups.
When Covid-19 hit the U.S. in March of this year, Jim got an email from one of his clients asking to put their work “on hold”—which was all fine and well until another client cut them off….and another… and another.
The pandemic had led to Jim’s company losing almost half a million dollars in potential client sales for the year. To top it all off, Jim caught the coronavirus while traveling for work.
Not long after, Jim recovered from the illness and his business rebounded from the loss. And in this episode, we peel back exactly how Jim recovered and pull out lessons you can apply to your business as we all cope with Covid together.

Cold Pitching vs. Content Marketing
On today’s call, we chat with Mihai Zamfir who has done some incredible work in building a presentation design company.
Mihai gets a fair amount of new clients using sites like Upwork and other freelance marketplaces, but he’s ready to start finding better clients in more intentional ways. All of this leads us to an answer-rich coaching session all about short-term vs. long-term sales strategies.
Cold-pitching vs. Content marketing.
On the one hand, cold-pitching is hard and has notoriously bad conversion rates. On the other hand, content marketing is very time and labor intensive.
So what’s the right path for you? We’ll help you answer that question and many more in today’s episode.
