June 5, 2022: The Disruptive Spirit

It's Pentecost Sunday. For the month of June we'll be looking at the holy disruption of a Holy Spirit. The Spirit comes as wind and violent storm in Acts 2, and we see a pattern of wind and storm all throughout the book of Acts. Perhaps we're guilty of putting the Spirit in a box, or believing the Spirit is only ever like a gentle breeze. God shows up like a disrupting wind in our culture, in our communities, and in our lives.

Advent, Week 1: Expectation - November 28, 2021

As we move into Advent, we want to recognize the season of transition we are in as a community.  We know that there are a variety of emotions and feelings, and we want to recognize those, but we also feel that moving forward through Advent can be a really hopeful and redemptive experience for us, especially this year. The word Advent means ‘arrival’ or ‘appearance’.  It’s a gentle season, a season of slowing down and paying attention.  A season of yearning.  We are longing and yearning for what is to come. The scripture reading is taken from Psalm 147: 1-5, 8-9.

How to Read The Bible Historically - June 13, 2021

Generally speaking, reading the Bible is a good idea. But almost as soon as we crack open its pages (or open an app!) we’re faced with very real questions about what we’re reading: Where did this come from? Who wrote this? What does it mean to say this book is ‘inspired’? Answering these and other important questions is the first step to learning how to read the Bible for all it’s worth. Breaking Bread

Breaking Bread 1 Corinthians 11:17-26 When Jesus gathered his closest followers together one last time before his death, he used the symbolism of breaking apart a loaf of bread to illustrate that his body would be broken for them. But it wasn’t supposed to become a religious exercise so much as an everyday way for us to remember Christ, and to remember him together. At a time when sharing a meal is discouraged, how else can we remember him together?

The Crisis of Disillusionment

The Daughters of Zelophehad

Series: Reading Between the Lines The Bible is filled with so many great stories, so why does one tend to get so much air play (think: David and Goliath) while another would make even the most faithful church attender check the pages of their Bible to make sure it was really there? Well, we’re going to flip the script this summer and give a few of these lesser-known stories some serious air play! Numbers 27:1-11

Know Thyself

Understanding how you’re ‘wired’ is a key component of living a healthy and balanced life. As informed as you may be about the physical, social, and financial spheres of life, you can still feel lost if you don’t know the person God has uniquely created you to be. Romans 12:2-8

Balancing the Books

Money is one of those things we rarely talk about and yet it plays such a significant role in our day-to-day lives. But maybe talking about it is what we need to avoid letting its role become either too significant or not significant enough. 2 Corinthians 8:1-12

Friends are Friends Forever

This week, we will look at friendships and the power they hold in our spiritual lives. As Thomas Merton writes: "We are members one of another and everything that is given to one member is given for the whole body." We will study this principle in the story of a paralyzed man whose friends' faith led Jesus to heal him. Mark 2:1-12

Let’s Get Physical

It’s easy to think about our spiritual life as being completely separate from our physical life, but that’s just not the case. To live by faith is to live faithfully in these bodies we’ve been given, with their beauty and their flaws, with their strength and their weakness. “Therefore honour God with your body.” Acts 27:1-2a, 13-20, 27-29, 33-44

Living for Others

Brandon SpeakingIn an airline emergency, we’re told that we need to secure our own oxygen mask before helping those around us. That’s not a bad way to approach life as a whole, unless by taking care of ourselves we forget about our fellow ‘passengers’ altogether. What can we do to avoid slipping into self-serving patterns? There’s no way around it: sometimes life is just plain difficult. And yet even so, the Bible presents us with images of those who are in the depths of despair rising up and soaring victoriously. Are we somehow excluded from this kind of blessing, or can that be our story, too?  Isaiah 40:1-2, 27-31

As For Me and My House

Some of Joshua’s most well-known words often serve as both a declaration of faith and a piece of kitschy home decor at the same time. But the context in which they were first uttered was as real as it gets, and if we let them, these words will continue to present us with a choice and a challenge for ourselves and the people we love. Do Not Be Anxious About Anything

As important as Paul’s advice about avoiding worry is for the well-being of our souls, it can be difficult to actually live it out when life overwhelms us. But as long as we keep God involved in our circumstances, the peace we long for won’t be far away. Philippians 4:4-8
