Ep. 15: Transform Your Health in 18 Days (or Less)

Dr. Guthrie often asks, do you want your intensive care now or later? This is because so many people have serious chronic diseases that often put them in intensive care – diseases like heart disease and diabetes. But the evidence continues to mount that these diseases are amenable to lifestyle treatment. We can work intensely at these changes now, or we can take the intensive medical care later. Which would you choose? In the book Eat Plants Feel Whole, Dr. Guthrie presents an 18-day intensive plan to transform your health and here we dive into some of the details of the plan and why it is so effective. Ep. 14: Supplements Are Pills, Too!

Supplements are popular and there’s one for nearly everything. But are they good for you? Are they safe? Dr. Guthrie often reminds his patients that supplements are pills, too, which means they've been taken out of their natural state and put in a pill form. Most of what we need is present in plants, and most whole plant-based foods have nutrients. But are there some nutrients we might be low in? There are some medications that deplete nutrients in our body and then we may need supplements. Aging can also deplete our nutrient levels. We take a look at these and other nutrients and how to ensure healthy levels of them. And does everyone need to take B-12, no matter what they eat? Listen to find out. Ep. 13: Emotional Eating

Are your emotions eating you? Or are you eating your emotions? When you get stressed or worried do you reach for a candy bar or for a bag of potato chips? But often the first bite is the best bite and each bite after is not as good as the first. We look at the brain science behind dopamine, oxytocin, and addiction. And the relation of healthy social connections to healthy eating. Find the Reading Group Guide mentioned in today’s show and other bonuses at EatPlantsFeelWhole.com.

Ep. 12: Exercise - Don't Sweat It

We know we should exercise but we may not know the best way to approach it. How do you take your fitness level into account? When you over-exercise and run out of oxygen, this actually decreases the endorphins you produce. Instead of enjoying the exercise, you want to avoid it. How do you avoid that? Through intermittent exercise. The goal is finding your range for burning more fat while avoiding lactic acid buildup. Intermittent training works for people of all fitness levels and even those with diseases like congestive heart failure. In fact, it is better for people managing or even reversing chronic diseases. This is different from HIIT. With IT (intermittent training) you sweat less, which is why we say “don’t sweat IT.” Find the bonus mentioned in today’s show atEatPlantsFeelWhole.com

Ep. 10: When You Eat Is as Important as What You Eat

Have you found that counting calories didn’t help you lose weight? Why is that? Not all calories are the same. Fat calories are managed differently from carbohydrate calories. And the body prefers to use carbohydrate calories differently from fat calories. We look at the science behind fat and how it is treated in the body. Plus, calories eaten in the morning versus calories eaten at night. Have you heard of intermittent fasting? How does that affect the body? Ep. 9: Fats: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Are fats confusing? Fats are stored energy, which means they are highly concentrated calories. Fats are dealt with in our bodies differently than carbohydrates and protein. We talk about the different kinds of fats, their role in our body, and where cholesterol comes into the equation. And what about those plants with oil in them, like avocados, nuts, olives, and coconut? The very best way to get healthy important fats is through whole food plants. Ep. 8: Good Carbs? Bad Carbs?

Carbs improve the serotonin in our brain, they make us happy, and they also make us want to eat more carbs. Some carbs are simple sugars and other carbs are complex sugars. They are important for energy and our bodies’ preferred energy source. Simple carbs enter the body too fast which raises the blood sugars too fast and increases inflammation. They can also lead to weight gain. Good carbs enter the body slowly. It isn’t the carbohydrate that is bad, but when they are separated out from the plant, they enter the body so much quicker. Good carbs are those that are still within the plant. We need those carbs. Whole plants have good carbs. Find the shopping list mentioned in today’s show and other bonuses at EatPlantsFeelWhole.com.

Ep. 7: Are You Getting Enough Protein?

Where do you get your protein if you eat only plants? Protein is one of the four main food parts – “pro” meaning “for” and “tein” meaning “life.” The chains of protein create structures throughout the body. Our body and our muscles need protein. Protein, in turn, is made up of amino acids, the building blocks of protein. Four of these are essential. How much protein do you need when eating whole-food plant-based foods? And which foods have protein? (You may be surprised.) Can you get too much protein? What is all the controversy and confusion around protein? We talk about how when you “eat the plants,” you will get protein. Find the bonus recipes mentioned in today’s show and other bonuses at EatPlantsFeelWhole.com.

Ep. 1: Healing the "Big 4

Is there a link between Diabetes, Heart Disease, Hypertension, and Obesity – the Big 4? They come with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high blood sugars. We might think they are inherited, but lifestyle has just as much influence, if not more. The ability to manage these diseases is mostly in the realm of the individual’s choices. You CAN change your decisions and change your life. Which is more filling? Apples or apple juice? An ear of corn or corn oil? Processed foods have more calories because the food is more concentrated. Fill up your stomach with whole foods, which have less caloric density. The best time to make changes to your diet is now. When you make the changes, you gain the benefit. Eat more plants! Move toward eating more unrefined – that is, whole – plants. Find out more at EatPlantsFeelWhole.com
