FEVER DREAMS: A Journey to Oregon, DC, and Beyond

Welcome back to Deep in Japan! I apologize for the brief hiatus. I was OOO on quite the adventure. Over the last two weeks, your fearful host was jet-setting across the globe, taking 5 flights, zooming through 4 bullet train rides, and hopping into countless Ubers. Along the way, I enjoyed having fascinating conversations with hundreds of people from all walks of life, mostly about AI and the end of humanity. No, just kidding. About AI and the transformation of our business landscapeーa topic that fascinates me, to say the least. Sadly, within 24 hours of having returned, I picked up a bug that would launch me into another journeyーan inward journey through the cosmos of my mind, which as you can tell by listening to this episode is a rather odd mind. Now that the fever has broken and I am once again comfortably back home in the Land of the Rising Bidet Hose (ah, my blessed Toto, how I have missed you), I'm ready to dive back into it. So stay tuned for more exciting episodes to come! The Deep in Japan Podcast is completely independent and crowd-funded, so if you like what you hear, please consider supporting the show. THE JAPAN LIGHTS with Iain Maloney

In this episode, we once again sit down with Iain Maloney, author of the critically acclaimed memoir, The Only Gaijin in the Village, to talk about his new book, The Japan Lights. In 2017, holed up in a hotel room, feverish, despondent, and aimless, Iain Maloney chances upon an article about Richard Henry Brunton, a Victorian civil engineer unknown in his Scottish homeland but considered ‘The Father of Japanese Lighthouses’ in Japan. With more than twenty of his lighthouses still in use today, Maloney sets out with a newfound purpose to visit them all.Part travel memoir, part history, The Japan Lights visits isolated regions of rural Japan, discovering compelling stories from its past. Maloney witnesses the lingering trauma of the 2011 earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster, and comes to a new understanding of the precariousness of life on a planet that is 71 percent water. Along the way, he explores the paradox of Brunton, a flawed human being whose work saved hundreds of thousands of lives and made the seas around Japan safer for all.LINKS! The Japan Lightshe Only Gaijin in the VillageIn Search of Piper Alpha  Red Flag Waltz (Iain's band)No Sympthy (outro) 喜びも悲しみも幾歳月 若山彰さん (outro)But We're Speaking Japanese (YouTubes clip) Do you speak English? A THOUSAND GRACES with Karen Hill Anton

In this episode, we welcome Karen Hill Anton back to discuss her wonderful new novel, A Thousand Graces. As you might recall, Karen was a guest on the podcast in June of 2021 to discuss her critically-acclaimed memoir, The View From Breast Pocket Mountain. And now, with this new publication, Karen has broken into the world of literature, with a lovely tale about a young, Japanese female student who doesn’t quite fit into the mold of her surroundings. It’s a thoroughly engrossing, exquisitely crafted tale, that also serves as a window into the stodgy, patriarchal countryside mindset of Japan in the 60s and 70s. A must-read for anyone interested in contemporary Japanese fiction. The Deep in Japan Podcast is completely independent and crowd-funded, so if you like what you hear, please consider supporting the show.Got something to say? Steve McCarty: How to Be a Professional Foreigner in Japan

In this episode, we welcome back Professor Steve McCarty to reflect on his forty-plus years of teaching and living in Japan. Over the course of the interview, McCarty shows his personality, values, and his personal philosophy on life. He describes encounters with Edwin O. Reischauer, Alan Watts, Ram Dass, Allen Ginsberg, and Donald Keene. Discussing his career as a professor, he advises navigating between assimilation and going native, consulting and negotiating to gain leeway, and remaining a professional foreigner. He applies the intercultural communication concept of public self and private self to reconcile cultural differences in an international family. He presents anecdotes at the local level of living in Japan such as community organizations and playing on baseball teams. He discusses Buddhism and avoiding inner conflict, balancing spontaneity with ethics so as not to harm others. Finally, he illustrates what makes real haiku possible in any language. If you would like to learn more about McCarty and his work, you can access his highly cited publications on e-learning, bilingualism, language teaching, Japan, Asia, and academic life at Japanned. Study Session 1: Kanzen Master N2 Reading

In this episode, the first of our Study Session series, Trevor and I take p.10 of the famed SHINKANZEN MASUTA DOKKAI NIHONGO NOURYOKU SHIKEN N2 (新完全マスター読解能力試験N2), a JLPT reader available at https://amzn.to/3pgN2zv And here is the reading from p 10: 練習1:問いに対する答えとして、最もよいものを一つ選びなさい。 The Deep in Japan Podcast is completely independent and crowd-funded. Alcoholism in Japan: An Interview with Taka from AA

In this episode, we've done something different. Recently, Taka celebrated his first AA “birthday” and is a now year sober. Well done, Taka!If you would like to skip over the English intro and get straight to the interview with Taka, you can skip ahead to the 19 minute mark. I wasn't that far under the mark. In 2016, when this was recorded, 37,461 people were killed in 34,436 motor vehicle crashes, an average of 102 per day, or 12.4 per 100,000 people per year. Japan, on the other hand, only had 4.1 traffic fatalities per 100,000 persons per year, meaning that America has more than triple the fatalities Japan does on average. In 2018, the number of traffic deaths in the US reached an estimated 40,000. Be safe on the highways out there, people! And gripes might be an understatement! Warning: If you are not interested in hearing criticism of Japan, this is not for you. We recorded this on the debut of "Premium Friday," a government campaign which urges people to leave work at 3:00 PM on last Friday of every month (neither of us did), in an effort to boost consumer spending amid Japan’s persistent deflation. According to the Japan Times, the first Premium Friday fell flat on its face, with only 3.7 percent of Tokyo area employees leaving work early, according to a survey. And outside of Tokyo, I'm guessing it's even worse. For the love of all that's *not* karoushi, let's hope it catches on!.
