The Great Escape: The True Story of Three Alcatraz Inmates
Though the prison has been closed for decades, Alcatraz has earned its place in infamy. In its heyday, “The Rock” was considered impenetrable. At least thirty six prisoners attempted to escape the island – all were captured, shot, or swallowed by the sea. All of that changed one fateful day in June 1962, when a group of three men plunged into the San Francisco Bay in hopes of finding freedom. For years, their fates were unknown – most speculated that the prisoners had drowned in the tumultuous waters. But, 51 years after the fact, the discovery of a mysterious letter forced the FBI to re-evaluate their presumptions about the daring escape artists of Alcatraz.

The New Life Children's Refuge Case | Laura Silsby
The New Life Children's Refuge case was an incident of alleged kidnapping and the ensuing legal cases which occurred in the aftermath of the January 12th, 2010 Haiti earthquake. On January 29, 2010, a group of ten American Baptist missionaries from Idaho attempted to cross the Haiti-Dominican Republic border with 33 Haitian children. The group, known as the New Life Children's Refuge, did not have proper authorization for transporting the children and were arrested on kidnapping charges. The missionaries denied any wrongdoing and claimed that they were rescuing orphans and leading them to a Dominican hotel which was being transformed into an orphanage. Nine of the ten missionaries were later released but NLCR founder Laura Silsby remained incarcerated in Haiti. By the time she went to trial on May 13 the charges had been reduced to "arranging irregular travel" and the prosecution sought a 6-month prison term. On May 17, she was found guilty and sentenced to the time served in jail prior to the trial.

The Atlanta Lawyer Who Killed His Wife | Fred Tokars
Fred Tokars was, at best, an unlikely criminal. As a one-time prosecutor and defense attorney, Tokars had seen both sides of the process and what happens to those convicted of crimes. Yet Tokars was faced with exposure of exactly what he was (a felon with ongoing criminal enterprises) by a wife who knew a little too much. That drove Fred Tokars to order a hit on his wife.

A Century-Old Cold Case | The Hinterkaifeck Massacre
The Hinterkaifeck murders occurred on the evening of March 31, 1922, when six inhabitants of a small Bavarian farmstead, located approximately 70 kilometres (43 mi) north of Munich, Germany, were murdered by an unknown assailant. The six victims were Andreas Gruber (age 63) and Cäzilia Gruber (age 72), their widowed daughter Viktoria Gabriel (age 35), Viktoria's children, Cäzilia (age 7) and Josef (age 2), and the maid, Maria Baumgartner (age 44). They were all found struck dead. The perpetrator (or perpetrators) lived with the six corpses of their victims for three days. The murders are considered one of the most gruesome and puzzling unsolved crimes in German history.
Four of the dead bodies were stacked up in the barn, the victims having been lured into there one by one. Prior to the incident, the family and their previous maid reported hearing strange sounds coming from the attic, which led that maid to quit. The case remains unsolved to this day.

Carl Panzram: A Life of Killing, Raping, and Vengeance
Charles "Carl" Panzram (June 28, 1891 – September 5, 1930) was an American serial killer, spree killer, mass murderer, rapist, child molester, arsonist, robber, thief, and burglar. In prison confessions and in his autobiography, Panzram confessed to having committed twenty-one murders, only five of which could be corroborated; he is suspected of having killed more than a hundred men in the United States alone, and several more in Portuguese Angola. He also confessed to having committed more than a thousand acts of rape against males of all ages. After a lifetime of crime, during which he served many prison terms and escaped from them just as much, he was executed by hanging in 1930 for the murder of a prison employee at Leavenworth Federal Prison.

Ravensbrück was a German concentration camp exclusively for women from 1939 to 1945, located in northern Germany, about 56 miles north of Berlin at a site near the village of Ravensbrück (part of Fürstenberg/Havel). The camp memorial's estimated figure of 132,000 women who were in the camp during the war includes about 48,500 from Poland, 28,000 from the Soviet Union, almost 24,000 from Germany and Austria, nearly 8,000 from France, and thousands from other countries including a few from the United Kingdom and the United States. More than 20,000 of the total were Jewish, approximately 15%. 85% were from other races and cultures. More than 80% were political prisoners. Many prisoners were employed as slave labor by Siemens & Halske. From 1942 to 1945, the Nazis undertook medical experiments to test the effectiveness of sulfonamides.

The Butcher of Plainfield
It was strange for Bernice Worden to not be in her hardware store on a Saturday. And it was even stranger that she left without locking the door. Her son Frank, a deputy sheriff, stopped by the store around 5pm and searched for Bernice without any luck. Then he checked behind the counter and felt his stomach lurch. The cash register was open and there were dark pools of dried blood on the floor.
Frank was worried but not panicked. He was a career cop and, despite the personal nature of the crime, he immediately took on the perspective of an investigator. He checked the receipt pad next to the register and saw that the last sale was from that morning: a gallon of antifreeze sold to a Mr. Ed Gein, a Plainfield local. Frank knew the Gein family in passing.

The Valley of the Headless Man
There are few places in the world as wild or stunning or strange as the Nahanni Valley in Canada’s Northwest Territories. The valley cradles the Nahanni River, a fast-flowing ribbon of whitewater and sharp falls that cuts through the Mackenzie Mountains. The valley is massive and remote; the entire area is covered in jagged pines, cliffs, canyons, and towering rock formations that jut out from the water. There are no roads near Nahanni. The only way to reach the territory is by air, water, or an arduous hike. Once you’re in the valley, should you encounter trouble, help is very, very far away.
Despite the dangers of whitewater, wildlife, and soaring cliffs, the beauty of the Nahanni Valley continues to attract visitors while its natural resources, including reports of gold, have lured adventures to the sprawling frontier for hundreds of years. But the location has a chilling reputation that has led many would-be explorers to avoid the basin.
The Nahanni Valley is better known as the Valley of the Headless Men, or Deadmen Valley.
