Have you ever entertained the idea of working with a family member in your child care business but are uncertain how it would work out? Join us today for episode 70 of the Child Care Genius podcast! We've got a dynamic duo on the show—Andrea Wortman and Kate Fifield. They are a mother-daughter team but they make sure to keep their relationship strictly professional at work. These two powerhouses run an incredible child care program in Oregon which is quite unique since it is not a traditional brick-and-mortar child care center. Their program is called Club K which offers exceptional hands-on learning experiences through their various activity zones.  Andrea, the seasoned pro, started off as an educator and ventured into the child care business with a modest plan that exploded into a massive 10,000 square foot center, thanks to her sister's help. Kate, who practically grew up in the child care business, initially had no intention of joining it professionally. With a degree in accounting and project management, she carved her own path until circumstances led her right back to the family business. Their shift from traditional centers to relying solely on public school spaces is a tale of adaptation and innovation, peppered with unique challenges of its own. Listen in as Andrea and Kate discuss the challenges of working as a mother-daughter team, handling conflicts, and balancing personal and professional dynamics. Kate also talks about why she chooses to call her mom by her first name in the workplace. Their business goals for the future are as diverse as their backgrounds, yet they're so aligned in building a better, more efficient child care model. In their child care program, their mission is to make sure the kids are safe, they are learning and having fun. Andrea and Kate were also gracious enough to share the nuggets they gained from our full-day site visit at their programs. Hearing them talk about their takeaways and the impact our visit had on their business was incredibly heartening. E47 - Empowering Child Care Owners: Techniques for Managing Staff Problem Behavior with Prerna Richards

Welcome to part two of our conversation with Prerna Richards, founder of “Together We Grow.” In this episode, Prerna discusses techniques for child care owners to deal with staff problem behaviors. Prerna emphasizes the importance of recognizing and addressing the emotional needs of staff members and the impact it can have on a child care business. She points out teachers also require validation, understanding, and appreciation. “When staff feel seen, heard, understood, motivated, valued, appreciated, they're more likely to commit emotionally, physically mentally to your program.” Listen in as Prerna introduces the concept of applying “love languages” in the workplace and suggests that owners should identify the love languages of their staff to make them feel valued and motivated. By understanding each staff member's love language, owners can personalize their recognition and appreciation efforts.  The second strategy is to engage in connecting rounds in the morning, where owners and directors make a point to connect with each staff member individually. This interaction can be tailored to the staff member's love language, such as offering words of affirmation, spending quality time, or providing acts of service. Another strategy Prerna encourages is to create a supportive environment by implementing a group chat or support system for the team. This fosters a sense of belonging and encourages professional growth through mentoring. Tune in as Prerna highlights the importance of providing feedback and addressing unacceptable behavior promptly. Silence and lack of accountability can perpetuate problem behaviors and negatively impact the entire team. Prerna also emphasizes the significance of supporting staff members' self-care and well-being. Recognizing that stress is real in the early childhood field, owners should provide resources and support systems to help teachers take care of themselves, as this ultimately contributes to better care for the children. Overall, Prerna's insights provide practical techniques for child care owners to address staff problem behaviors and create a positive work environment that promotes motivation, connection, and personal growth.  We are happy to have Prerna as an adjunct Professor at Child Care Genius, where she can impart her valuable expertise in a field she is very passionate about.   To Contact Prerna Richards: www.togetherwegrow.online   Mentioned in this episode: ALEAF Insurance (Official Child Care Genius Podcast Sponsor), Specializing in child care insurance) Contact Blake Sanders for more information: (972) 866-4065, blake@aleafinsurance.com  https://www.aleafinsurance.com/child-care If you need help in your child care business, consider joining our coaching programs at Child Care Genius University. E45 - Building Wealth Beyond Child Care: Exploring Real Estate Investments with Brian and Carol Duprey

Do you have a retirement plan?  Have you considered investing in real estate? In episode 45 of the Child Care Genius podcast, Brian and Carol delve into the topic of real estate as an investment strategy for child care buildings and other properties. They highlight the importance of planning for retirement and generating income for the long run. Initially skeptical about taking on debt, Brian shares how Carol's insistence led them to purchase several of the daycare centers they were leasing. The couple's real estate venture extended beyond child care facilities into investment properties, particularly multifamily units. They emphasize that real estate has proven to be a more lucrative investment compared to traditional options like the stock market.  Listen in as Brian and Carol offer valuable tips for real estate investing, starting with the importance of establishing liability protections through separate LLCs for each property, safeguarding assets and limiting potential losses. They advise investors to consider a property's potential for increasing rent or reducing expenses to maximize profitability. Brian emphasizes “when you're going to look at a property, you wanna look at what a property can be, not what it is.”  Also building a strong relationship with a supportive banker who understands their business and offers competitive rates is crucial for obtaining financing. Brian and Carol stress the significance of patience in real estate investing, cautioning against rushing into deals impulsively. They encourage seeking guidance from a coach or mentor with experience in the field to make informed decisions. Additionally, they suggest exploring the option of getting licensed as a real estate agent, which can save on commissions and provide tax advantages, an idea worth discussing with a CPA. Brian and Carol would love to share their real estate knowledge with those that attend the Child Care Genius Leverage Conference in Jamaica Sept 18th-22nd, 2023. Their Child Care Genius University Coaching Program also covers these strategies, offering support and evaluation of deals for their clients. E34 - Practical Legal Strategies for Protecting Your Child Care Business with Rob and Krystle Steinhoff

Welcome back to part two of our riveting conversation with attorneys and owners of Thrive Early Learning in Georgia, Rob and Krystle Steinhoff. In this episode, they dive deeper into their areas of legal expertise and provide valuable insights for child care business owners. Krystle's primary focus when practicing law was on general business transactions, document production, contracts, and trademark law. As she explains, "a trademark is a way to protect your intellectual property." This is important for child care owners who want to safeguard their logo and business name. Krystle advises doing a thorough search to ensure that your business name is not already taken. "If you don't trademark your business logo or name, there's a chance someone could swoop in, take it and run with it”, she cautions. Rob, on the other hand, is an expert in commercial real estate law. He stresses the importance of separating personal interests from business interests. "At a minimum, you need to set up a Corporation or Limited Liability Company (LLC)," he recommends. This can easily be done online. Rob also suggests setting up a separate bank account for your business to keep your finances organized. To protect your business, it's crucial to have insurance in place. Rob emphasizes the importance of "doing your due diligence as a business owner to understand the insurance side of it." He advises having a good relationship with an insurance agent who understands the child care business. (Our sponsor, Aleaf Insurance is a great resource for this.) As your business grows, things can change, and it's important to update your policies accordingly. Listen in as Krystle and Rob provide practical advice on strategies to collect payments owed by clients and alternative means to resolve issues before they escalate to litigation. E32 - Planning for the Future: Protecting Your Childcare Business and Family with Estate Planning with Christine and Wade McNally

This is Part Two of our podcast with child care owners Christine and Wade McNally. Join us today as we delve into a crucial but often avoided topic for childcare owners: estate planning. We understand that talking about end-of-life plans can be uncomfortable and overwhelming, but it is a necessary step in protecting your loved ones and your business legacy. In this episode, Wade McNally will lend his legal expertise as we discuss the challenges that come with estate planning and offer practical tips on how to get started. We'll cover topics such as creating a will, establishing a trust, and the nuances between the two.  If you have a will or trust in place, when was the last time it was updated?  Wade reminds us how imperative it is to make estate planning a priority.  Wade refers to estate planning as "life planning."  Wade emphasizes, "as a business owner, you felt like you had a path, right? You felt like you know the direction you want your life to go in. Well that's the same with a will or a trust.  Having estate planning in place, you're creating that path. You're putting your wishes down."  We will also touch on the unique considerations that childcare owners must make; such as ensuring the continuity of care for the children in their programs, providing for their employees, and the importance of successor planning. Wade urges child care owners to reach out to a local attorney that specializes in estate planning to help guide them through the process, rather than a DIY method. Don't let fear or uncertainty hold you back from securing your future and that of your loved ones. Tune in to our podcast and start your journey towards peace of mind and financial security through effective estate planning.   To contact Wade & Christine McNally: Christine@childcaregenius.com Mentioned in this episode: ALEAF Insurance (Official Child Care Genius Podcast Sponsor), Specializing in child care insurance) Contact Blake Sanders for more information: (972) 866-4065, blake@aleafinsurance.com  https://www.aleafinsurance.com/child-care If you need help in your child care business, consider joining our coaching programs at Child Care Genius University. E31 -Streamline Your Child Care Business with SOPs: Stop Reinventing the Wheel! with Christine and Wade McNally

Today on the podcast we are sitting down with one of our favorite child care couples, Christine and Wade McNally.  This is Part One of a two part conversation with this dynamic duo.  We were able to spend some quality time getting to know Christine and Wade during a past workation.  During the podcast Christine and Wade both share their perspectives on the value and benefits of a Child Care Genius workation.  Christine was a home provider when we first started coaching her. Through coaching we helped her realize her dream of owning her first center. We've continued to coach them through their expansion endeavors.  Christine didn't set out to be a young child care entrepreneur but rather circumstances made it a necessity for her family.  Listen in to hear how her maternal instincts played a huge role in their child care business journey.  Their story is the definition of "turning a negative into a positive." Christine was able to run a successful in-home child care program while Wade completed Law school.  Wade and Christine share their unique story of running a center in another state. The commute alone showed us how dedicated they are to their child care business.  As they add another location to their roster, Christine says at times she " feels like a parent torn between two children."  Christine learned early on in their expansion process, "you have to be really flexible, because timelines aren't going to happen the way you want them..."  As a couple they believe implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) is a key component to running a successful business. Christine stresses, "it's important to have systems in place ahead of time, that you can replicate and do. Because you can't expand if you don't have a system you can replicate." Wade reiterates, "for efficiency, I don't want to be recreating the wheel every time you open a new center. We already have processes that work. We have systems that work."  Tune in to discover the coaching techniques that enabled Wade and Christine to effectively manage their responsibilities and collaborate seamlessly while balancing multiple centers and working as a couple.  We have an announcement today!  Our faculty will be enriched by the addition of Christine McNally. Christine is excited to join the Child Care Genius University faculty as we launch our new BOOST LEVEL, geared towards In-home Child Care Providers.  Christine is looking forward to being able to assist In-home Child Care providers as they work on their business goals and dreams through the Child Care Genius University.   Mentioned in this episode: ALEAF Insurance (Official Child Care Genius Podcast Sponsor), Specializing in child care insurance) Contact Blake Sanders for more information: (972) 866-4065, blake@aleafinsurance.com  https://www.aleafinsurance.com/child-care If you need help in your child care business, consider joining our coaching programs at Child Care Genius University. E24 - Learning from the Mistakes of Others to Excel in Your CC Business with Jennifer & Noah Smith

Today we are having a candid conversation with an amazing couple, Jennifer and Noah Smith from Pennsylvania. Jennifer and Noah are students in our Child Care Genius University coaching program. They are fairly new child care center owners and have also recently expanded. Jennifer works full-time in their child care business and her husband, Noah, works full-time in healthcare, but he also assists with the financial side of things for their child care business. Most importantly they both have the same commitment to growing their business and making it the best it can be.  Jennifer used her past experiences in the child care field as she took the leap of faith to open her own center. Jennifer said she had the clear perspective of "this is what I want different for myself and my employees because I knew what wasn't going well and what I wanted to change." Jennifer and Noah recently expanded to a second center. They share the trials and tribulations of the purchasing process. We were there to coach them along the way and assure them a better deal was out there. As a neutral third party, a coach can help guide you through tough decisions that affect your business. Had they jumped into the first deal there could have been financial repercussions. In hindsight, they can see why things played out the way they did. Tune in to hear how the new deal worked out in their favor.    More about Jennifer & Noah Smith: Jen Smith has 12 years of experience in daycare management, and Noah has been an entrepreneur since 2013. They purchased their first center in the middle of COVID for a great price! The business had a 34-year history in the community that they built upon. They established a culture of caring and learning and fell in love with the process of growing and building a childcare company! They just purchased their second center, and can’t wait to start the process again! E22 - The Power of Working with Your Spouse as a Business Partner with Michael and Mandi Braswell

Today we are welcoming Michael and Mandi Braswell, owners of Country Kids Academy in San Antonio, TX, to our podcast. They share with us their unique story of how they started in the child care industry, the struggles they faced and overcame, and the power they found working together as business partners in their child care business. Michael and Mandi are students in our Child Care Genius University coaching program and they reveal the reasons why they felt compelled to join and some of the best parts of being in the program. Michael said one of the main reasons he was open to coaching is that he doesn’t ever want to “get stagnant and not grow. Inspiration comes from the group, and there is value in having an outside perspective.” Listen now to hear more. One of the struggles this couple faced is how to divide the responsibilities of the business, and then stay in their own lanes. Michael and Mandi discuss how they worked through this issue and how they resolved it.   There is power in working together as a couple - you are there to hold each other up (especially on the bad days). But there are also obstacles to overcome in figuring out your lanes and solutions to problems that you might not agree on. There is so much more to this story. E20 - The Power of Franchising Your Child Care Business with Dana Oliver

Have you ever had a babysitter cancel at the last minute on date night? What's a parent to do if they have a hair appointment or an impromptu business meeting they have to get to but don't have child care lined up? Our next guest, Dana Oliver, pondered some of these very questions and had an epiphany. Dana is the president and CEO of Adventure Kids Playcare. Adventure Kids Playcare is a drop in child care franchise that is in high demand right now. It's currently expanding into new markets across the country.  The Adventure Kids Playcare hourly drop in child care franchise specializes in catering to the flexible work schedules of parents. Dana believes that providing much needed flexible child care is a great business model. Dana shares a pivotal moment that led her on the path to create her business. After talking with other parents about common child care dilemmas. "What do you do when you want to workout? What do you do when you want to go out on a date night? And I got the same answers. Well, get a babysitter. If they cancel, you stay home. Bottom line."  Dana knew that there had to be a different way of doing child care that could accommodate parents. After doing a lot of research Dana developed Adventure Kids Playcare. It allows parents the flexibility that they need and provides kids a place they want to go. Adventure Kids Playcare offers a wide variety of child friendly activities to keep kids engaged. Tune in to hear Dana describe the fun offerings at her centers. After having great success at her first location, Dana knew she was on to something and eagerly started looking for a second location within a few months. Shortly after that Dana was approached by someone who had heard about her business and asked if she would be interested in franchising. Dana's answer was "sure of course!". Flash forward, Adventure Kids Playcare has 18 locations and is still growing. Listen in to hear how Dana has effectively led her team. Dana enjoys working with her franchisees. "It's a built-in peer group and they're all vested in your success." Dana elaborates on how franchisees can reach out to each other to be each other's sounding board and bounce ideas off one another. "Having that network built in is such a benefit." Each market is different, but we can see how effective this drop in child care business model can be in big markets where there is a high demand for flexible child care. E19 - End of the Year Tax Strategies for Your Child Care Business with Darren Hall

What better way to wrap up 2022 than to discuss end-of-the-year tax strategies with our own resident tax expert and CPA? We’ve been working with Darren Hall for 25 years and we are bringing our secret weapon directly to you on this podcast episode. Darren shares several end-of-the-year tax strategies to help you avoid common mistakes, keep better records, and reduce your taxes. We know that properly filing taxes is crucial for child care businesses. It can become more complex as your business grows. Learning about financial terms and taxes can seem complicated but you’ll get it over time.  That’s why we have Darren on our team.  He’s always willing to answer any questions we may have. If you don’t know what you’re doing financially it’s easy to be taken advantage of. Darren affirms it is paramount to understand some financial terms when you are a business owner. Darren understands that “everybody out there running a business is good at what they do but they're not necessarily good at accounting.” “If you are not engaged in all kinds of really high-level stuff then you don’t need that CPA that deals with high-level stuff”.  Darren elaborates “you need one that’s going to stop and take the time with you and discuss things with you…” When it comes to finding ways to reduce your taxes, Darren doesn’t want you to miss claiming the Employee Retention Credit that many are still eligible for if their business was affected during the pandemic. This could result in tremendous savings for your business. Darren discusses the criteria to qualify for this special credit. (Check out this episode to see if you qualify.) Darren also points out that one common mistake that business owners make when filing their taxes is missing deductions.  He highlights a few deductions that are often overlooked. Mileage for a personal vehicle, business meals, business trips, and special credits. Darren even touched on the topic of the tax law called the Augusta Rule. Check out the podcast as Darren delves deeper into each category.  We learn something new each time we talk with Darren.   If you need help in your child care business, consider joining our coaching programs at Child Care Genius University. E18 - Improving Culture and Compliance in Your Child Care Business with Ronnae Williams

Do visits from your state licensing consultant stress you out?  Is the workplace culture in your child care business not what you’d hoped it would be? Our next guest may help ease your mind on these topics. Ronnae Williams is a former licensing inspector in the state of Georgia.  She has worked for KinderCare, Kids R Kids, and is now an adjunct professor with the Child Care Genius University. Today we're going to be discussing improving your workplace culture and how to be better prepared for licensing visits. Ronnae discusses how workplace culture can impact compliance. "When you're in a space where the culture is honesty, integrity, wellness, compliance then that's the tune that everyone's marching to." As a child care owner, you can feel empowered knowing you can adjust the workplace culture in your child care business. Ronnae shares some strategies owners can use to set the culture. What kind of workplace culture do you want to create? Define it. Write it down & hang it up where others can see the direction you’re going.  Then implement it with your team. Ronnae points out that communication with your staff is key to creating a positive workplace culture. Having guidelines and setting expectations can help your team be successful.  It's important to point out the positive things that team members are doing and not just criticize.  As we like to say, catch your team members doing things right.  Ronnae expresses the importance of "knowing your team as people and not just your workers.  Meet them where they are as people and that helps with building the culture."  Ronnae started a child care consulting company called Culturally Yours Consulting and Training.  She can assist child care businesses in obtaining a license. Ronnae also offers state approved training for Georgia and Florida. If you have any state compliance issues you'd like to discuss, Ronnae has a wealth of knowledge to share.  Ronnae is excited to be a part of our Child Care Genius University. E16 - Creating a Teacher Orientation and Mentorship Program for your Child Care Business Owners with Elissa Woodle

Looking for ways to create a bond with your new staff members while implementing your business values? Making them feel a part of something and instilling the sense of a team or child care family? Elissa Woodle, the owner of two large schools in SC, did just that. In today's episode, Elissa shares her tips for creating an amazing teacher orientation and effective mentorship program. Elissa has run small centers and big centers. But she prefers running a big center because there are more resources to pull from. Elissa describes how they implemented the teacher orientation to acclimate incoming child care staff members. The orientation helps walk them through how the child care center operates each day. The teachers "become accustomed to our growth, our values, our goals, and our high expectations."  At Elissa's schools, once teachers have completed orientation, they migrate to a mentorship program. A senior mentor gives new staff "someone to bond with, somebody to grow a relationship with, and they have somebody to go to when they have struggles or they have wins." Elissa believes there are many tangible psychological benefits to having a mentor program."When it comes to the confidence of these staff members they will go way beyond the call of duty and their job description, just because they have the confidence to be able to accomplish all tasks before them." A proper staff orientation and mentorship program can help your child care business maintain dedicated staff members and prevent frequent turnover. As a coach, Elissa would love to help others successfully reach their child care business goals.  If you need help in your child care business, consider joining our coaching programs at Child Care Genius University. E15 - The Power of One-On-One Coaching for Child Care Business Owners with Lisa Giancarli

Have you ever thought about working with a child care coach but weren't sure if your business could afford it? Our guest Lisa Giancarli spotlights this topic and how invaluable a coach can be to facilitating a successful child care business.  Lisa shares her unique backstory that led her into the child care field and the challenges she faced while learning the ins and outs of the child care business that she and her husband stumbled into.  Searching for answers to successfully run her business led Lisa to join a coaching program. Lisa expressed that to work with a coach "feels like you go into a partnership...with someone that has had success." "They're helping you identify your problems, helping you take action and see the results."  Lisa shared the positive impact coaching had on her as she navigated leading her child care team. Coaching helped her take an honest look at herself and helped keep her accountable.  Child care owners are often trying to balance many spinning plates at the same time. It's easy to lose sight of different dynamics. Coaching can help owners look at "everything". "What's going right?" and "what's going wrong?" are equally important.  Lisa believes in “working on your business not in your business”. It can be a difficult transition from a director to an owner. "A good coach does help you take a step back and look at the school as a whole." What is the power of one-on-one coaching? Coaches get to know you and your business more intimately. The time spent with a coach is quality time; where specific areas of concern can be addressed.   Lisa estimates that one-on-one coaching is the "best money I've spent in my business life.” "It's a personal journey, not just for your business. Coaching can change your mindset."  Coaching is an investment in your child care business. Lisa affirms, "it's an investment. Not only an investment in your business, it's an investment in you." As a Child Care Genius University professor, Lisa can't wait to help other child care owners experience greater success with their businesses.  More About Lisa Giancarli:   https://childcaregenius.com/lisa-giancarli/   To contact Lisa Giancarli: lisa@childcaregenius.com   Mentioned in this episode: ALEAF Insurance (Official Child Care Genius Podcast Sponsor), Specializing in child care insurance) Contact Blake Sanders for more information: (972) 866-4065, blake@aleafinsurance.com  https://www.aleafinsurance.com/child-care Learn more about our coaching programs in Child Care Genius University: https://childcaregenius.com/university Advanced Child Care Business Strategies: Secrets to Profitability, Expansion, and Wealth Creation Get it on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3Tm5ML3 Get it for Free (USA addresses only) https://childcaregenius.com/accbs-autographed-copy-free-optin/ Connect with us:  Child Care Genius Website Submit a Podcast Question Here Like us on Facebook Join our Owners Only Private Mastermind Group on Facebook    Join our Child Care Mindset Facebook Group Follow Us on Instagram Connect with us on LinkedIn Subscribe to our YouTube Channel Buy our Books Check out our Free Resources

E14 - Leadership & Mindset Secrets for Child Care Business Owners with Joy Maxwell

This episode offers a lively discussion on the impact of leadership and mindset on your child care business with Joy Maxwell, one of our certified child care business coaches (a.k.a. “professors”) at Child Care Genius University.  Joy fell in love with child care when she was just 14 years old through a school work-study program. After she finished college she taught in the school system for several years, but missed the younger ages. She said, “Child care has always been my first love.” She currently owns 2 locations in Pennsylvania and one location in Florida. Joy says, “I believe that leadership will make or break your business. People don’t leave companies, they leave bad leaders.” If your team doesn’t feel like you care about them, or if they feel like they cannot trust you as a leader, it can be detrimental to the success of your business. Don’t assume when you hire a director that they know how to lead a team. It takes an investment of time and training to develop into a strong, positive leader (as opposed to a boss) While being a boss technically puts you in the position of leadership, Joy shares several characteristics that differ between bosses and true leaders. Listen now to learn how to make your team feel supported, nurtured, and valued. Joy says that when you can set the right tone in your business, the whole team will be more productive, positive, and impactful. Joy emphasized that a positive mindset is important in leadership. She remembered Henry Ford’s famous quote, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can't – you're right.” Following up with, “Whatever your belief system is, your behaviors will follow,” pointing out how your mindset can trick you. “You have to know, trust, and believe that things will work out, that you can pivot at any point, that you can make changes, and that you can be successful.” Joy loves to help child care owners. Her favorite part is checking back in with people and knowing that she made a difference and inspired change. She likes to take coaching beyond knowledge, encouragement, and inspiration to the point of implementation. “Knowing what you need to do without knowing how to do it, without a success map, without implementation, all of that only leads to frustration.” If you need help in your child care business, consider joining our coaching programs at Child Care Genius University. E13 - Protecting Your Child Care Business from Hidden Liabilities with Blake Sanders

Is your child care business at risk due to inadequate insurance coverage? Child care businesses carry with them unique situations and require specific policies in order to be fully protected.  If you should ever have a claim, it can quickly snowball into millions of dollars. Do you have the funds in the bank to cover such a catastrophe, or would you have to shut down your school in the wake of such a lawsuit?  Most hometown insurance agents are not equipped with the knowledge and expertise required to completely safeguard your child care business from liabilities, yet most ECE businesses rely on these generic providers for coverage. Blake Sanders of Aleaf Insurance specializes in child care and joins us on the podcast today to point out several often overlooked areas that are often missed in child care business insurance policies. Don’t leave your child care business vulnerable because you don’t have the proper insurance coverage.Tune in now. Blake shares recommendations for the minimum amounts of coverage needed for your buildings, furnishings, business income, outdoor property, workers' compensation, student accidents, and more.  He also shares some important information about flood policies - did you know this IS NOT included in most insurance policies and you may not be covered?  There are also specific considerations you need to look at when it comes to injury to a child, abuse & molestation coverage, auto liability (even if you don’t offer transportation), and ELPI (Employment Practices Liability Insurance. Blake says, “This is truly the most overlooked and underused policy that is out there for child care, and the average claim is around $400K.”   “There are very few agents out there in the nation who truly specialize in child care. I can almost count them, from an agency standpoint, on one hand. Most out there do a little bit of everything, but not all child care, and that’s what we are. We understand the risks, the liabilities, what the child care owners out there are really up against every day. So that’s one thing to think about when you are looking for an agent. Make sure that they know your business, that it’s what they specialize in.” More About Blake Sanders:  Blake Sanders is a native Texan and has been in the insurance industry for over a decade, specializing in child care businesses. He graduated from Southwest Texas State University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Management. His wife of 18 years, Marcie, is no stranger to the child care world as she worked in the industry for almost 10 years. Together they have two teenage children, Kyler and Kason, both involved with sports. When Blake is not working with child care centers and early childhood education centers, he loves to spend time in the outdoors with his family and two dogs Bailey and Chloe. He enjoys hunting, fishing, slow smoked Texas BBQ and making sure his clients are properly insured! E12 - Building Meaningful Connections to Calm Behavior Issues in the Classroom with Prerna Richards

Prerna Richards, an early childhood education veteran of 37 years,  joins us on the podcast today to continue our discussion on supporting teachers who may be struggling with behavior issues in the classroom.  Prerna knows that this is one of the leading causes of burnout, but feels that our teachers might not have the tools they need to help children communicate their needs.  When you listen to today’s episode, you’ll learn: The six reasons causing most behavior issues and strategies you can use for each of them What it means to become a “breathing program” How to reconnect children’s brains for listening and learning when it seems like they have checked out and are on a different planet At least six game-changing phrases that can turn almost any situation around The 3 E’s you can do every day to manage and reduce stress And more When it comes to calming behavior issues, it starts with the adults. If teachers cant regulate their own emotions, how can they teach the children these skills?  Prerna wants to give teachers the skills and strategies they need to to help children regulate themselves.  Teachers are in this profession because they care and want to make a difference. She says, “It’s a calling - it’s a privilege to make the world a better place for children.”   Prerena observes that if the adult is not centered and balanced and calm,  they tend to go into the reacting space instead of the responding space. She reveals a simple 4 step plan adults can follow the next time they feel triggered that will help both the teacher and child work through the behavior.  Prerna points out that behavior is a form of communication. Start looking for what the child is trying to communicate. Knowing that attention-seeking behavior is a relationship-seeking need is a game changer.  When children are acting out, doing attention-seeking behavior, they are trying to connect with you somehow. And we have to connect with them when they are calm, not just when they are not acting up.  The more you correct, the less you connect. Children will not listen to you if you are not connecting with them.  Listen now, and share this episode with your teachers and caregivers to hear this inspiring conversation aimed at better equipping your team to positively lead children through their behavior challenges.   Tune in to hear the answer to this week’s listener question:  Dear Brian & Carol: I have a policy not to expel children with biting issues, but I’ve recently lost two families because of my policy and my staff is frustrated. How do I keep parents and staff happy when there’s a difficult child in the classroom? Jennifer, NY   Tune in to hear guest expert, Prerna Richards, share several pointers on helping guide children out of biting behaviors. She says, “It just takes a little bit of work to rewire children’s brains,” Tune in now   More About Prerna Richards:  Prerna Richards is a Keynote, international, national speaker, behavior coach and NAEYC consultant. Ed., creator of Yogarate and the Behavior Mastery System.  Ron is an author and motivational speaker on a mission to empower and re-energize teachers and child care staff when it comes to behavior management. Working with children displaying difficult behaviors is one of the leading contributors to staff turnover and burnout. Many owners are looking for solutions and tools to equip their teams to successfully navigate these challenges in the classroom. Ron Shuali is here today with several solutions and free tools to empower your teams. Tune in to hear Ron walk us through his simple five-part system that can turn around any iffy behavior situation in a jiffy. When you listen, you’ll learn the details of the Pattern Interrupt, the Preframe, the Powerlook, the Unique Positive Reinforcer, and Fast Forward Testing.  It’s not as complicated as it might sound.  These techniques focus on adding fun and silliness into the structure of your day.  This is important because you process thoughts and emotions so much differently when you are in a heightened state of joy and happiness.  Many of Ron’s techniques actually help children to reprogram their own behavior patterns, because they begin choosing more desirable behaviors on their own. As a benefit to our listeners, Ron is offering his video series that you can use to train your teachers for free. Just scroll down for the link. You can also find several free videos and trainings on his YouTube channel. Ron is available to speak or train at your school.   Tune in to hear the answer to this week’s listener question:  Dear Brian & Carol: I have several children with behavioral issues and I am frustrated with the teachers constantly bringing the children in my office when they cannot handle them. Summer has over 18 years in the industry and is the creator of the Conscious Classroom Certification Model. Summer knows specifically what it takes to lead a mission-driven team and create a culture where schools and families feel like they belong.
