  Episode 24 Thomas Meixner The Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Arizona had a very problematic student. After Dr. Thomas Meixner gave Murad Dervish a failing midterm grade, Murad began displaying increasingly violent behaviors. But while Dr. Meixner and several of his faculty appealed to the University administration and UA police force several times, little was done to deter Murad’s violent outbursts. And though the university expelled Murad, the act would only serve to further enrage him, and Dr. Meixner became the target. Episode 22  The Ecole Polytechnique Massacre Quebec experienced intensive social upheaval over the course of the 20th century, affecting everything from university structures to social commentary. In 1989, Quebec women were gaining more and more footholds in previously male dominated careers. And while the Ecole Polytechnique was at the forefront of female academic empowerment, one disgruntled young man was on a mission to eradicate feminism. In the span of twenty minutes, the enraged killer murdered ten women and injured several others for the crime of trying to graduate with degrees in engineering. Episode 19 Lauren McCluskey University of Utah track and field star Lauren McCluskey had everything going for her. Until she met Melvin Shawn Rowland at a club, and started dating him. Melvin told Lauren he was just 28, and a college student like her. But he was really 37, had a child – and had done ten years in prison for a sex crime. When Lauren broke up with Melvin, she started receiving bizarre and then concerning texts, and then the sextortion started. Lauren went to the campus police for help repeatedly, but her cries for help went unheard. On October 22nd, as she was on the phone with her parents, Melvin grabbed Lauren outside her dorm and shot her 7 times. The school had ignored all the warning signs – and Lauren McCluskey paid the ultimate price. Episode 18 Cheri Jo Bates In 1966, Riverside City College student Cheri Jo Bates was viciously stabbed 42 times and nearly decapitated in an alley after leaving the school library. Police discovered that her car had been deliberately disabled, and concluded that her attacker had deliberately sabotaged it in order to get to her. The case was thoroughly investigated, but had started to cool when an anonymous confession letter arrived – claiming responsibility for the murder in great detail. Additional letters added to the mystery. And then, another killer dominated the headlines in California – a killer who also sent anonymous letters that bore marked similarities to the confession letter. Episode 16 Colleen Ritzer In 2013, a shocking crime rocked the town of Danvers, Massachusetts.Colleen Ritzer, a beloved math teacher at Danvers High School was found savaged, raped and buried under leaves off the cross country path behind the school. Police followed the clues and quickly apprehended her killer–a 14 year old student. Philip Chism had no record, no behavioral problems, and no known motive to kill his algebra teacher–but he followed Colleen into a women’s bathroom and cut her throat.The crime was planned, premeditated, and pure evil. And Philip wasn’tdone–he would attack someone again before he was locked away.

Episode 15 Dana Bailey In 1987, Penn State senior Dana Bailey was the victim of a man police believe was stalking her. He watched her from an adjacent building, and one night he scaled rooftops and climbed into her apartment and murdered her. Dana was found posed in a sexually suggestive manner, and police believe her killer did this so he could enjoy his handiwork. Anonymous letters and calls from tipsters kept investigators busy, but police never had any good suspects in this case – every lead went cold. Dana Bailey’s case took a twist when the DA assigned to her case, Ray Gricar, went missing in 2005. He has never been found – and Dana’s case remains unsolved. Episode 14 Suzanne 'Suzy' Lyall The 1998 disappearance of Suzanne Lyall, who was known to many as Suzy, is one of the better-known missing persons cases. Suzy was a studious and industrious student at SUNY-Albany who was abducted after taking a bus back to campus from work on the night of March 2nd. No evidence of Suzy was ever found again – except for the strange appearance of her work ID in a parking lot, and someone using her ATM card to withdraw $20. Suzy’s boyfriend was a prime suspect in her disappearance – but many have their doubts about his involvement. Episode 13 Lola Martinez In 2008, 22 year-old Liette Nicole Martinez who went by Lola, a graphic design student at New Mexico State University, was studying at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne Indiana as part of an exchange program. In April of that year, Lola was found dead in a bloody crime scene in campus housing in Fort Wayne. Lola had been brutally stabbed to death and her killer also threw boiling water on her. The shocking discovery was made by one of Lola's roommates. Police soon learned that Tina Morris, the mother of another roommate of Lola's was missing and so was Lola's car. Tina Morris had been staying in the residence for the previous 2 weeks. Police wondered if Tina Morris too was in danger, or had she fled after murdering Lola. When they finally caught up with Tina, police learned the shocking truth. There was reason to believe that he had been abducted by a team of people in Santa Ana. Inquiries led to the name of a young college student who told investigators he had raped her – but they could not connect the rape to the murder. Introducing Cold The Search For Sheree Sheree Warren left her job in Salt Lake City on a mild October evening in 1985. Episode 11 Christine Rothschild In May 1968, the murder of University of Wisconsin – Madison first year student Christine Rothschild shocked the campus of 33,000 students. Studious and quiet Christine was unhappy at UW, and hoped to transfer – but two days before she was due to leave, she was murdered in a brutal and sadistic case of overkill. Her brazen killer waylaid her in broad daylight, and arranged her in a gruesome tableau that resulted in him being termed a psychopath. Christine’s case is unsolved – but we will discuss the prime suspect in the case, a man who reportedly was stalking the young student, and whose erratic and disturbing behavior was ignored by the university. Rebecca Love, a graduate student, was murdered in her dorm room at the college in 2007. Libby Squire, an undergraduate, was abducted while walking alone on the streets of Hull in 2019. The cases are very different, with Rebecca’s killer being a love interest, and Libby’s killer being a stranger. But both women were alone and vulnerable when they were attacked and killed right in the middle of a bustling university town – reminders that students need to heed the warning signs and look out for one another while they are far from home. Episode 8 John Edward Roach In 1958, a brutal murder took place on the campus of Delaware College (which is now called the University of Delaware). But this was not a furtive slaying in a dorm room, or a student love triangle gone wrong. This murder took place in the middle of the day, in the middle of a public school building, in the middle of a brawl. Student John Edward Roach was stabbed in the throat in a room full of brawling young men – yet no one saw his murderer strike. His last whispered words were heard by many – but his murderer went free. Roach’s unsolved homicide has left the Delaware institution with a legacy of ghost stories and tales of hauntings that continue to this day. This is the story of John Edward Roach. Episode 6 Half and Susanne Zantop In January 2001, the double murder of a couple, beloved professors at Dartmouth College, shocked everyone in the small college town of Hanover, New Hampshire. Half Zantop and his wife Susanne were found brutally stabbed to death in their own home. Police initially assumed the killer was a disgruntled student, a secret lover, a jealous colleague…and turned the Dartmouth community upside down trying to root out the killer. But evidence at the scene pointed in a different direction entirely. And led to a pair of killers who were never on police radar, and who no one expected would be capable of such a brutal crime. Episode 5 Jane Britton In January 1969, a brutal murder of a graduate student shocked Harvard University. Jane Britton was found raped and beaten to death in her apartment. The investigation rocked Harvard’s esteemed faculty when several anthropology professors came under investigation for the murder, who were under scrutiny because a red powder sprinkled at the murder scene paralleled an ancient burial rite. There were also whispers that Jane was involved in an affair with a professor, and her boyfriend, also a student, was interrogated several times. Episode 4 Pam Milam In this episode we discuss a truly devastating campus murder – the 1972 abduction, rape and slaying of college student Pam Milam. Pam was enjoying sorority rush week at Indiana State University in Terre Haute. She attended some evening events with her friends, and left a party before midnight to go move her car closer to the dormitory suite. She never returned. The next day her father located her distinct vehicle parked in a different spot, and in the trunk was Pam, bound and strangled. Authorities looked at numerous suspects, including a fellow student who abducted and raped at least 2 women, but the case went cold. Forensic Genealogy conducted decades later pointed to a suspect no one had ever considered – multiple offender Jeffrey Lynn Hand. Episode 3 Robert Bechtel In 1955, there was a shocking murder at Swarthmore College, in the rolling hills of Pennsylvania. A student, Francis Holmes Strozier, was shot in the head and killed as he slept in his dorm bed. The killer, 22 year old student Robert Bechtel, was the one who alerted others to his crime. But, Bechtel claimed that he was driven to kill others after being the victim of bullying, and at trial, used the insanity defense. Bechtel was institutionalized, but less than 5 years later was a free man. He went on to live a seemingly normal life – even becoming a professor at a college himself. But Bechtel would eventually confess all to his own students – and use his own actions as a call to action to fight campus bullying. Follow Campus Killings on Social Media. Episode 2 Yeardley Love At the University of Virginia, famously founded by Thomas Jefferson, no student had ever killed another. In 2010, that changed. Popular and athletic senior Yeardley Love was found in her bed by her roommate, bloodied and battered. A hole in her bedroom door told police that her killer had been very angry – and one man in Yeardley’s life was known for his violent rages. Her ex-boyfriend, fellow senior George Huguely, was arrested for her murder. Huguely stood trial and was convicted. Yeardley’s mother and sister sued both the school and Huguely, but the suit against UVA was dropped. Yeardley’s family won a large civil verdict against her killer, and as a result of Yeardley’s death, UVA now requires students to report arrests, and the Virginia General Assembly passed a law making it easier for people who are in a relationship to obtain a protection order against their abusive partner. These tragedies are typically perpetrated by a mentally unstable juvenile lashing out at his or her schoolmates to express frustration or rage. But what about when the shooter is a teacher? And not just a teacher – an esteemed Harvard-educated college professor? The February 2010 shootings by Professor Amy Bishop of 6 of her University of Alabama colleagues at a biology staff meeting was shocking enough. But when police began to look into Professor Bishop’s past, two other incidents came to light that could have been seen as significant warning signs that something was not right. Episode 1 Jeanne Clery In April 1986, first year student Jeanne Clery, a bubbly member of the tennis team, was brutally slain in her dorm room bed. The crime was incredibly violent and disturbing. But it did not take authorities long to find her killer, as he had confessed – and to everyone’s shock, he was also a Lehigh student. Josoph Henry told his friends he had killed a girl and stolen some of her stuff. Henry was quickly tried for the crime and sentenced to death. His sentence was eventually pleaded down to life in prison. But Jeanne’s legacy lives on, thanks to her parents. The Clerys sued Lehigh for lax security, and initiated a sweeping legislative trend that engendered a federal law named after their daughter. As a result of the Clery Act, colleges and universities that receive federal funds must be accountable for reporting crimes on their campuses, and ensuring that their students stay safe. 'The Clery Act' requires colleges and universities to report campus crime data, support victims of violence, and publicly outline the policies and procedures they have put into place to improve campus safety.
