Messaging: A Lifeline for Those Impacted by Emergencies
Messaging is an essential communication tool in emergencies, and its importance cannot be overstated. During times of crisis, timely and accurate communication is critical for providing information and instructions, coordinating response efforts, and ensuring the safety of individuals and communities. Messaging allows for rapidly disseminating information to many people, making it an effective means of reaching those in need and coordinating a response.Links:Web: https://titanhst.com/LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/3KgRvv6Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/titanhst/Twitter: https://twitter.com/TitanHSTFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/TitanHST/Youtube: https://bit.ly/3mePJyG

Facing Challenges When Communication Infrastructure Fails
Interoperability in emergency communications is a critical component in ensuring the well-being and safety of the public. When emergencies occur, time is of the essence and it is essential that first responders are able to communicate effectively with each other, regardless of their telecommunication carriers, in order to respond quickly and efficiently. The ability to communicate and coordinate effectively is crucial for first responders in their efforts to contain and resolve emergencies. With interoperability, they can share critical information and work together to assess the situation and determine the best course of action. They can communicate about the location of the emergency, the number of people affected, the type of incident, and other vital information that is necessary to make informed decisions and respond appropriately!Links:Web: https://titanhst.com/LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/3KgRvv6Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/titanhst/Twitter: https://twitter.com/TitanHSTFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/TitanHST/Youtube: https://bit.ly/3mePJyG

The key to building resilience
It's no secret that the US economy has been experiencing steady growth for the past decade, but as with any economic cycle, it will eventually end. We should ask ourselves not if but when the next downturn will occur and how we can be prepared.Today, I want to talk to you about strategies that US companies can implement to build resilience, survive a downturn, and thrive in the next cycle.First and foremost, let's talk about building resilience. The key to building resilience is to diversify revenue streams. Companies that rely heavily on one market or product are more vulnerable to economic shocks. By diversifying revenue streams, companies can spread risk and ensure that they have multiple sources of income in case one market or product experiences a downturn.Links:Web: https://titanhst.com/Titan HST Webinars: https://us02web.zoom.us/.../691.../WN_tvsEnxraTuGTg9-F3smE6gLinkedIn: https://bit.ly/3KgRvv6Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/titanhst/Twitter: https://twitter.com/TitanHSTFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/TitanHST/Youtube: https://bit.ly/3mePJyG

Is It Business Continuity of Risk Management
Risk management and business continuity are two critical concepts in business management. While closely related, they have distinct differences in scope, focus, and overall goals. Risk management is identifying, assessing, and prioritizing potential risks to an organization's operations and assets and implementing strategies to mitigate or manage those risks. It is a proactive approach that aims to minimize the impact of potential hazards on the organization's operations, reputation, and bottom line. Risk management is typically focused on identifying and mitigating specific risks, such as natural disasters, cyber-attacks, or supply chain disruptions. On the other hand, business continuity ensures that an organization can continue operating in the event of an unexpected disruption. This includes planning, testing, and maintaining systems and processes that allow the organization to respond quickly and effectively to an emergency and to recover operations as quickly as possible. Business continuity is focused on ensuring that the organization can continue to operate in the face of an emergency rather than trying to prevent the emergency from occurring in the first place. Six Steps to Conducting a THIRA
Threat and hazard identification and risk assessment (THIRA) is a systematic process for identifying and evaluating potential threats and hazards to an organization. It involves identifying potential risks, assessing their likelihood and potential impact, and developing strategies to mitigate or eliminate those risks. The Economic Cost of A Crisis
With cyber-attacks in the headlines, a new report provides a gloomy reminder of the deep and long-lasting impact when things go wrong in public corporations. On average, companies struck by a crisis suffered a drop in share price by 19%, and share value took 147 days to recover. Moreover, crises involving environmental damage resulted in almost twice as severe an impact on the average share price. The cost of crises increasingly features in the headlines. When Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram had a six-hour global outage late last year, Facebook shares fell by 5%, costing founder Mark Zuckerberg an estimated $6 billion in personal wealth. Software maker Adobe was the victim of a cyberattack that compromised about 38 million active users. The company had initially declared that 2.9 million accounts had been affected and paid millions of dollars in fines.LinksWeb:https://titanhst.com/LinkedIn:https://bit.ly/3KgRvv6Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/titanhst/Twitter:https://twitter.com/TitanHSTFacebook:https://www.facebook.com/TitanHST/Youtube:https://bit.ly/3mePJyG

What Is The Future of Business Continuity
Today, in addition to natural disasters such as hurricanes, fires, floods, and pandemics and man-made issues such as wars, organizations face other challenges to their operations. For example, a modern business must contend with widespread economic and political instability, organized cybercrime, and eco-terrorist attacks. Likewise, their vulnerabilities have changed. For example, disruptive technologies such as AI, the Internet of Things, and hyper-extended supply chains have created operational complexity where vulnerabilities are hard to detect and even harder to protect.LinksWeb:https://titanhst.com/LinkedIn:https://bit.ly/3KgRvv6Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/titanhst/Twitter:https://twitter.com/TitanHSTFacebook:https://www.facebook.com/TitanHST/Youtube:https://bit.ly/3mePJyG

Why Should You Care About Water Issues In Your Community
When storms like Hurricane Ian strike, many people have to cope afterward with losing water service. Power outages mean pumps can’t process and treat drinking water or sewage, and heavy stormwater flows can damage water mains. In Jackson, Mississippi, rising river water overwhelmed pumps at the main water treatment plant on Aug. 29, 2022, following record-setting rain. For a week, more than 180,000 residents were forced to find bottled water for drinking and cooking. Even after water pressure returned, many Jackson residents continued to boil their water, questioning whether it was safe to drink.Jackson had already been under a boil-water notice for more than a month before the crisis, which arrived like a slow-motion bullet to the city’s long-decaying infrastructure.LinksWeb: - https://titanhst.com/LinkedIn: - https://bit.ly/3KgRvv6Instagram: - https://www.instagram.com/titanhst/Twitter: - https://twitter.com/TitanHSTFacebook: - https://www.facebook.com/TitanHST/Youtube: - https://bit.ly/3mePJyG

Complexity bias is a logical fallacy that leads us to give undue credence to complex concepts.Faced with two competing ideas, we are likely to choose the most complex one. IoT Based Disaster Management
For protection during a disaster, an effective localization and positioning system is a vital disaster. With the use of mobile devices, locating individuals during a disaster is becoming easy with Cell/RIF/Bluetooth. The mobile device-enabled Augmented Reality(AR) in conjunction with the Internet of Things(IoT) is changing the face of disaster management. AR and IoT technologies are active topics in emergency and disaster response. They both are powerful technologies in the era of modernization. They are developing a new dimension with the capabilities to attach and utilize digital information and data from physical devices. With the use of these technologies, you can benefit your enterprises by modernizing how you manage personal and asset deployment. AR and IoT both act brilliantly together because It creates a connection between physical properties and digital infrastructure. AR generates digital life by interacting with the physical surroundings in real-time. Why Fire Drills Are Critical
What do you do after your emergency procedures and evacuation plans are complete? It is time to exercise them. Your team must know what to do in an emergency at work and home. And How you are going to communicate with them. A vital part of this training is a fire drill, which puts the emergency procedures into practice to see if they work. If they don’t work, and there is a fire, it can have devastating consequences. Fire drills are often perceived as an unnecessary nuisance and disturbance, but they are critical in safety plans. Do You Have A Wildfire Plan
The Southwest has moved from fire season to a 365-day threat of wildland fires. Why do you need a plan? Roughly 60,000 wildfires burn 8 million acres in the U.S. each year, according to the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC). Wildland fires are more destructive and deadly than ever. Although we see fires in the west the most, every state has a wildland fire threat. An Incident can happen anytime, the nature of emergencies is not limited to normal business hours. A well-planned incident management program allows an organization to minimize the impact of any business disruption that impacts your organization negatively. However, your team needs to be able to access the plan and the process from any location that they are at, and they need to have a great communication infrastructure in place. The success of the business continuity plan also depends on communication among everyone on the incident response team and the rest of the employees about everyone’s responsibilities. Why Core Values Matter In Business Continuity
Organizational culture is the collective result of how people think and behave, the shared values, and reactions to internal and external stimuli. An organization's culture and its corresponding set of guiding principles (core values) will determine its resilience during a crisis.Leaders and managers must lean on the organization's values to drive performance, especially during challenging times. An organization's values should be the bedrock of why the company exists, how behavioral norms are defined, and how decisions are made to achieve goals and objectives. They must be authentic and relatively specific to resonate with the organization's members. The Business Continuity ShowTwitter - https://bit.ly/3ojEIO2Facebook - https://bit.ly/2Tjqv5HLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/3mePJyGAwards:https://blog.feedspot.com/business_continuity_podcasts/Sister ShowsEM StudentWeb - https://bit.ly/2Hw0sFxTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWdEM WeeklyWebsite - https://bit.ly/3jj5ItlTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWd

Why We Conduct Disaster Drills and the Culture of Preparedness
It has been said that doing fire drills and other disaster exercises is a time suck, that they interrupt important work and productivity. Time and time again, this has been proven to be wrong. The drills save lives. We can point to Active Shooter drills that saved students a few weeks ago. The example on 9/11, how thousands of lives were saved by Rick Rescorla, who did not take no for an answer. Implementing You Leadership Model, Don’t forget to Practice
Anything that you do well is because of the hours you put into practice. Malcolm Gladwell writes to become an expert in a field you must put in 10,000 hours of work. The same goes for leadership. Being a leader in a Crisis, is more than writing a plan and holding a drill, it is putting your time and energy into practice. We learn from our mistakes, we make models and break them and make them again. We need to dig deep into who we are, where we want to go and who we want to be. Never Forget
I can recall the exact location I was on September 11, 2001 when I learned of the first plane hitting the World Trade Center in New York City. I was listing to the radio on my way to work in the West Adams District of Los Angeles. I knew we were under attack. The next few weeks for the United States was a mix of anger, fear, and sadness. You see the WTC was more than an office building, it was a symbol of prosperity, a destination for school children on field trips, a location for business, and a part of the skyline of the capital of the world. This week we remember the attack on the WTC, the Pentagon, and the rest of the world. I am sharing a story of one man that saved thousands of lives, just because he took his job to seriously. Rick Rescorla. Next week we will get back on track with our leadership topic. Developing Your Leadership Plan
What is your leadership style? What is your leadership plan? They sound like similar questions, however, they are not. If you are a leader, by title or by your actions, I bet you wing it. I bet you could not tell me how you plan to use your skills, in a way that helps your team, and your organization moves forward.Your style is not a plan, it is like saying, well, I am putting on this suit, it looks good so I will make good decisions. What you need is a mental model that helps you on a daily basis, to help you lead your team down the right path. When you come to a fork in the road, if you do not have a plan, it does not matter what path you take. When you have a plan, you are halfway to completing the goals that you have set.The Business Continuity ShowTwitter - https://bit.ly/3ojEIO2Facebook - https://bit.ly/2Tjqv5HLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/3mePJyGAwards:https://blog.feedspot.com/business_continuity_podcasts/

Climate Change How It Impacts Business Are You Ready
Over the last year and a half, we have seen how COVID-19 has impacted our daily lives. We have had to make a shift in how we conduct business, how our supply chain has been affected and how we communicate with our employees, stakeholders, and clients.A Study published in 2012 warned it was prudent to expect climate surprises in the coming decades, including unexpected and potentially disruptive single events, and for them to become progressively more severe. We have seen this come to the fore with Super Storm Sandy, stronger and more frequent storms in the Atlantic, including the first storm to hit New England in 30 years last weekend. At the time of this post, the storm Henri was forecasted to hit southern New England as a strong tropical storm or possibly as a Category 1 hurricane. Is your organization forward-looking and resilient? Do you have a plan? What are you using for communications? Are you and your employees ready at home? What is Essential and How to Find It
Greg McKeown’s Essentialism got me thinking about how we can apply the principles of less is more to the field of Business Continuity and Emergency Management. I think that it is worth discussing. We end up doing a lot of things that is not a core service that our disiplin ought to be doing, Working in a small or even a large organization, business continuity or emergency management becomes that department that gets projects that other departments do not know how to, or want to handle. We have to learn to say no and examine what we are doing right and what we are not able to handle. We must examine our core capabilities.Exploring our core capabilities and removing what we should not be doing This process s more than cutting stuff out, and leaving an shell of a department. It is avoiding mission creep, and at the same time focusing on the essential services that the department provides. It makes a better organization at the end of the process. The Business Continuity ShowTwitter - https://bit.ly/3ojEIO2Facebook - https://bit.ly/2Tjqv5HLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/3mePJyGAwards:https://blog.feedspot.com/business_continuity_podcasts/Sister ShowsEM StudentWeb - https://bit.ly/2Hw0sFxTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWdEM WeeklyWebsite - https://bit.ly/3jj5ItlTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWd

Becoming a Trusted Advisor to the C-Suite
The C-suite by definition, are the chief officer of their organization. Doing great work, running your team and making sure the organization is ready for any crisis is what we’re all here for. But as anyone who’s worked at an agency knows, that’s a constant challenge. So keeping the C-Suite happy can be demanding. The C-Suite has high standards. They have complex organisations behind them. And they have their own pressures to respond to. Making this more complicated for all of us is the fact that the communications and technology landscape is changing at a faster rate than ever before. So while we’re proud of the great job we do for our bosses, however we can never rest on our laurels. We have to constantly get better at providing the right advice for leadership and building strong, lasting relationships with them, even as our industry evolves around us and as we go through the inevitable hiccups that every profession experiences from time to time. The Business Continuity ShowTwitter - https://bit.ly/3ojEIO2Facebook - https://bit.ly/2Tjqv5HLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/3mePJyGAwards:https://blog.feedspot.com/business_continuity_podcasts/Sister ShowsEM StudentWeb - https://bit.ly/2Hw0sFxTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWdEM WeeklyWebsite - https://bit.ly/3jj5ItlTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWd

Planning Your Organization's Pivot
If we as a collective learned anything in 2020, it is that we cannot assume that our year will turn out as planned. One thing that we can count on is change. In fact, we need change to do our jobs. The trick is, how do we manage change, and how to we plan for the pivot. As business continuity, emergency, and crisis managers, it is our job to plan for and expect the need for our organization to pivot. To make a great transition when the time is needed, you have to have a strong base. Like in medicine, we take the baseline vitals so we know if our patient is getting better or not. In emergency planning and management, having a solid baseline it critical. Is Managing Disasters, Crisis, and Business Disruption, Really Just Managing People?
I read "Crisis Management is People Management" in this month's Crisis Response Journal by Thomas Lahnthaler. He argues that over the last year, we were not managing tactics to combat the global threat of COVID-19. We needed to focus on the people affected by the pandemic. In my class the Social Impacts of disaster, I discuss the idea that disasters are not disasters until it impacts humans. Yes, we can discuss the ecological impacts of an event. However, if it did not kill humans, or have direct economic consequences, did it happen? This week we will be diving a little deeper into what it is to manage a crisis. The Business Continuity ShowTwitter - https://bit.ly/3ojEIO2Facebook - https://bit.ly/2Tjqv5HLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/3mePJyGAwards:https://blog.feedspot.com/business_continuity_podcasts/Sister ShowsEM Student Web -https://bit.ly/2Hw0sFxTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWdEM WeeklyWebsite - https://bit.ly/3jj5ItlTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWd

Over the last two weeks, there have been two shooting events that impacted a large venue. One was at Knott's Berry Farm, an amusement park located in Orange County California, and a shooting outside of the Washington Nationals Stadium in Washington DC. Both events did not directly involve the venue, however, miss information, lack of communications, and general confusion inside the venue occurred. EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AND RESILIENCE IN A POST-COVID WORLD
COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we work, we need to be strategic, we need to be efficient and as organized as possible, and learning as possible. COVID-19 has taught us the challenges of planning under uncertainty. We learned to deal with the constantly changing guidance from the Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control, we no longer have a final plan, because it's constantly changing to keep pace with the newest guidance and regulations from every level of government. The pandemic has shifted all of us into uncomfortable and unknown positions. We are taking on roles that were not initially expected. We have learned new ways to coordinate. The Pandemic is shedding a lot of really stark light on who has power and whom we prioritize. Keeping Your Remote Workers In Your BCT Plan
Tens of millions of people globally are experiencing a seismic shift in work. Many have been forced into their homes and asked to not only make do, but maintain or increase their productivity. For many, this is their first extended experience with work-from-home. Globally, the narrative has neglected nuance, referencing the phenomenon as a global "remote work experiment." It is neither remote work nor an experiment. Particularly for leaders who survey their workforce to understand their perspective on remote work, be intentional about highlighting this realityTechnology can also help when it comes to emergency preparedness by enabling employees to connect to the internet, access important files and documents, and maintain a clear line of communication. Remote work during an emergency or disaster will indeed be much different than remote work during normal times — there may be additional challenges and stressors that require different solutions than normal. In the aftermath of a disaster, it’s important to be flexible, understanding, and take your employees’ needs into account. The Business Continuity ShowTwitter - https://bit.ly/3ojEIO2Facebook - https://bit.ly/2Tjqv5HLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/3mePJyGAwards:https://blog.feedspot.com/business_continuity_podcasts/Sister ShowsEM Student Web -https://bit.ly/2Hw0sFxTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWdEM WeeklyWebsite - https://bit.ly/3jj5ItlTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWd

Managing Up, How to Engage Your Executives Before a Crisis
One of the most common complaints that I have heard over the years from emergency and business continuity managers is they cannot get their executives to participate in emergency drills and exercises. We hear lip service all the time from City Managers, CEOs, and Presidents of Higher Education Institutions on how Emergency Management and safety are important to them...Until they do not lead from the top and show up for the training. It is hard for EM and BC managers to get the buy-in from the midlevel managers if the top does not participate. To make matters worse, when a crisis does happen, and the C-Suite shows up, they want to be in charge. In addition, they make bad decisions, they do not understand the emergency plan and they become ineffective. Then, they blame the emergency managers, and the system did not work. Is the Country Open again or Is It a False Start?
Like many people, I've sorely missed going to sporting events last year there were games, however, cardboard cutouts (that were kind of strange) and piped-in crowd noises were the norms in light of the world's COVID-19 pandemic. And also like many —while I understand the need for and support precautions to protect ourselves and others from the virus and mitigate its spread, I've been longing to enjoy the electric feel of a live sporting event. Lead with Clarity of Purpose, Plan, and Responsibility
What is the difference between chaos and a plan? Having a plan is the difference between world-shaking impact and dreaded obscurity. Teams that achieve great things share one key habit–they are committed to clarity. Clarity is their hidden, often unspoken advantage. With clarity, teams and individuals know exactly what they’re doing, why they’re doing it, and who’s responsible. Learn To lead with authenticity:
We must have the courage to bring our true selves to our interactions. Sometimes, that means being a less-rehearsed, less-polished version of ourselves. Being more transparent and vulnerable in this crucial way helps us to earn trust; we become more relatable by allowing stakeholders to really see us and connect with us.As we strive to be better leaders, we must learn to evolve to be our best selves. Leadership is an art and with any art it is practice that makes us better. What worked today may not work tomorrow and what is effective with one person may not have any impact on another. Navigating Chaos, The Time for You to Lead
While we are currently facing unprecedented levels of chaos in business, chaos itself is not a new phenomenon. In fact, chaos is inherent in running a business. That's because running a team comes with complex dynamics driven by a multitude of stressors, goals and personalities. Add to this the personality, challenge, and triggers of the leaders making the big decisions, and you have created the perfect environment for chaos to flourish. To better understand how to think about chaos and eventually manage it, it's very important to think about chaos in business at an microscopic level. That means understanding where it comes from and those categories as both distinct and interconnected things. The Business Continuity ShowTwitter - https://bit.ly/3ojEIO2Facebook - https://bit.ly/2Tjqv5HLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/3mePJyGAwards:https://blog.feedspot.com/business_continuity_podcasts/Sister ShowsEM Student Web - https://bit.ly/2Hw0sFxTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWdEM WeeklyWebsite - https://bit.ly/3jj5ItlTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWd

Deliberate Practice: Changing the Way We Look at Business Continuity?
As we see the field and job of the Emergency and Business Continuity Manager move to a profession, how do we get there? Deliberate practice is what turns amateurs into professionals. Deliberate practice is absolutely essential for expert performance. You may have heard the old saying Practice Makes Perfect? That is not true, if you practice poorly, your performance will suffer. The key distinction between doing and practicing is that we’re only practicing something when we do it in a way that makes us better at it—or at least with that intention. The Business Continuity ShowTwitter - https://bit.ly/3ojEIO2Facebook - https://bit.ly/2Tjqv5HLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/3mePJyGAwards:https://blog.feedspot.com/business_continuity_podcasts/Sister ShowsEM Student Web - https://bit.ly/2Hw0sFxTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWdEM WeeklyWebsite - https://bit.ly/3jj5ItlTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWd

How to Improve Emergency Management Training with Gamification
Emergency response exercises often have a high degree of interaction between the elements that have to be learned. This increases the natural complexity of the information that must be understood and the material that must be learned (Sweller, 1994). However, the achievement of learning goals is often only determined by observation. These observations are certainly valuable in their own right (e.g. detailed descriptions of events, immediate interpretation of data, placing results in context). However, solely using observations to gather data has its limitations (Kanat, Siloju, Raghu & Vinze, 2013). The limitations which are most relevant regarding learning in emergency response exercises are the observer’s cognitive limitations and the (limited) type of data that is being gathered. Generally speaking, gamification has the potential to aid in the gathering of quantitative data. Gamification is the use of game elements to improve user experience and user engagement in non-game services and applications (Deterding, Sicart, Nacke, O'Hara & Dixon, 2011). In particular, we focus on the potential of gamification to support self-evaluation processes through the automated gathering of data about the participants’ performance. Gamification: Developing Your Team for Disaster and Crisis Training
Today the role of the emergency and business continuity manager includes outreach to all of the stakeholders in the organization and the community. Sharing information in the past was static, gamification can bring the audience to the emergency manager and interaction with stakeholders to a new level.Gamification adds game-like elements to non-game situations to promote action and behavior change. It can come in multiple forms. There is regular gamification, adding story elements, badges, and scores where they would not normally be. Think online code schools or brain trainers. These boost activity by challenging the students in their own space and making learning more fun. The draw is either a personal challenge or the interest of completing a story. The Business Continuity ShowTwitter - https://bit.ly/3ojEIO2Facebook - https://bit.ly/2Tjqv5HLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/3mePJyGAwards:https://blog.feedspot.com/business_continuity_podcasts/Sister ShowsEM Student Web - https://bit.ly/2Hw0sFxTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWdEM WeeklyWebsite - https://bit.ly/3jj5ItlTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWd

Emergency/ Business Continuity Management can be complex when authority is shared, and resources are dispersed, expertise is scattered among other agencies and government levels, and organizations. When the question of Who is in charge is asked, it may be no one. Symbolic leadership is critical during a crisis or an emergency. Political leaders may lose their jobs. The public may lose confidence in the system. There are expectations that the head of government will make an appearance to demonstrate their concern for people's safety at risk and support for the crisis. The Business Continuity ShowTwitter - https://bit.ly/3ojEIO2Facebook - https://bit.ly/2Tjqv5HLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/3mePJyGAwards:https://blog.feedspot.com/business_continuity_podcasts/Sister ShowsEM Student Web - https://bit.ly/2Hw0sFxTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWdEM WeeklyWebsite - https://bit.ly/3jj5ItlTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWd

Occam’s Razor and Business Continuity
William of Occam was an English Franciscan friar and philosopher who lived from 1287 to 1347. Perhaps his most famous contribution to philosophy (and a variety of other fields, such as mathematics, biology, religion, and others) is what has become known as Occam’s razor. The principle is usually stated as: “Entities should not be multiplied without necessity.” Put another way: “The simplest solution is most likely the right one.” The idea is that as more inputs, assumptions, or dependencies are added to analysis or the solution to a problem, the more complex it becomes. The Business Continuity ShowTwitter - https://bit.ly/3ojEIO2Facebook - https://bit.ly/2Tjqv5HLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/3mePJyGAwards:https://blog.feedspot.com/business_continuity_podcasts/Sister ShowsEM Student Web - https://bit.ly/2Hw0sFxTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWdEM WeeklyWebsite - https://bit.ly/3jj5ItlTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWdProduced at Sitch Radio - https://sitchradio.com/

Using Decision Making Fast and Accurate, OODA Loop and the POP-DOC Loop
John Boyd created a four-step process for making effective decisions in high-stakes situations called the OODA Loop. It involves collecting relevant information, recognizing potential biases, deciding, and acting, then repeating the process with new information.Eric McNulty and his team at the NPLI took Boyd’s concept a little farther with the POP-DOC Loop by adding two steps. The POP-DOC Loop combines analysis and action into a continuous process. The analytic side is Perceive, Orient, Predict. The Action side is Decide, Operationalize, Communicate. The advanced design of POP-DOC incorporates a wider range of human factors, including neuro- and decision science research, in order to equip leaders to build SA in high-stress, high-stakes, evolving, and unpredictable situations. The Business Continuity ShowTwitter - https://bit.ly/3ojEIO2Facebook - https://bit.ly/2Tjqv5HLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/3mePJyGAwards:https://blog.feedspot.com/business_continuity_podcasts/Sister ShowsEM Student Web - https://bit.ly/2Hw0sFxTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWdEM WeeklyWebsite - https://bit.ly/3jj5ItlTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWd

The Principles of Thinking
Thinking it a process, Aristotle and Elon Musk us a process called First-principles thinking. This is one of the best ways to reverse-engineer complicated problems and unleash creative possibility. Sometimes called “reasoning from first principles,” the idea is to break down complicated problems into basic elements and then reassemble them from the ground up. It’s one of the best ways to learn to think for yourself, unlock your creative potential, and move from linear to non-linear results. This process allows you to cut through the fog of shoddy reasoning and inadequate analogies to see opportunities that others miss. The Business Continuity ShowTwitter - https://bit.ly/3ojEIO2Facebook - https://bit.ly/2Tjqv5HLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/3mePJyGAwards:https://blog.feedspot.com/business_continuity_podcasts/Sister ShowsEM Student Web - https://bit.ly/2Hw0sFxTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWdEM WeeklyWebsite - https://bit.ly/3jj5ItlTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWd

Mental Models and Decision Making: The Map Is The Tool The Decision is Still Yours
To solve this problem and make decisions, the mind creates maps (mental models) of reality in order to understand it, because the only way we can process the complexity of reality is through abstraction. However we don’t understand our maps or their limits. In fact, we are so reliant on abstraction that we will frequently use an incorrect model simply because we feel any model is preferable to no model. The map is the tool the decision is still yours. Make Smart Decisions, Lessons Your Parents Did Not Teach You
This is the second of four discussions on decision making. No one taught you how to decide, it is something that we just do. When we were children our parents did not go over the decision-making process or discuss mental models with us. Learning to make effective decisions will have the greatest impact on your professional and personal life. I know because I have made many wrong decisions and learned that lesson from life.Today, as we discuss decision-making principles, I have pulled ideas and concepts from many people with a vast amount of experience, and wisdom that was gained years of living. They draw upon the combined expertise of some of history’s deepest thinkers. Finding Your Why, Keeping You Organization Working Even During a Crisis
According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, 40-60% of small businesses close permanently after a disaster. Among businesses that are closed for at least five days, 90% fail within a year.A good disaster plan means fewer days out of business, better communication with employees and customers, and a better settlement from your insurance company. Assessing You Power Needs For a Grid Down Problem
Over the last decade, California has experienced increased, intense, and record-breaking wildfires in Northern and Southern California. These fires have resulted in a devastating loss of life and billions of dollars in damage to property and infrastructure. Electric utility infrastructure has historically been responsible for less than ten percent of reported wildfires; however, fires attributed to power lines comprise roughly half of the most destructive fires in California history. With the continuing threat of wildfire, utilities may proactively cut power to electrical lines that may fail in certain weather conditions to reduce the likelihood that their infrastructure could cause or contribute to a wildfire. This effort to reduce the risk of fires caused by electric infrastructure by temporarily turning off power to specific areas is called a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS). However, a PSPS can leave communities and essential facilities without power, which brings its own risks and hardships, particularly for vulnerable communities and individuals. From 2013 to the end of 2019, California experienced over 57,000 wildfires (averaging 8,000 per year) and the three large energy companies conducted 33 PSPS de-energizations.The Business Continuity ShowTwitter - https://bit.ly/3ojEIO2Facebook - https://bit.ly/2Tjqv5HLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/3mePJyGSister ShowsEM Student Web - https://bit.ly/2Hw0sFxTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWdEM WeeklyWebsite - https://bit.ly/3jj5ItlTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWd

Did you Conduct an After Action Review?
Did you conduct an After Action Review after the last crisis or exercise? As the impacts from disasters and crises can stay with us long after the event is over. The recovery process may continue for some time, one of the best practices that are found to be extremely valuable after every disaster is the After Action Review. This process helps organizations to identify areas of improvement in plans while the event, actions, and timeline are all still relatively fresh. It’s great to have and implement plans in response to an event, however, a critical improvement opportunity is missed if organizations don’t make time to identify and implement improvements quickly so the plans work even better next time. Communication Is a Critical Function of Disaster Response
Behind the scenes during disasters, scores of public information officers in state and local government agencies working 24-hour a day. They are frantically fielding facts and phone calls, rushing to get information to the news media and the public. While this work may not seem as critical to life safety, it is essential. Efficient, rapid, and accurate information flow during an emergency can save lives, especially during complex, evolving events like Hurricane Dorian. In a recent study, Alessandro Lovari assessed how PIOs used social media to communicate during emergencies. He found that social media has changed the landscape of public sector communication, and is now a key tool during disasters and emergencies. But it also raises new challenges, such as coping with huge volumes of information and determining whether reports are credible. The Business Continuity ShowTwitter - https://bit.ly/3ojEIO2Facebook - https://bit.ly/2Tjqv5HLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/3mePJyGSister ShowsEM Student Web -https://bit.ly/2Hw0sFxTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWdEM WeeklyWebsite - https://bit.ly/3jj5ItlTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWd

Selling Business Continuity to The CEO
If you’re like many organizations, you have an inadequate Business Continuity Program and your CEO may not even know or understand. Why we still need BC/EM Experts

Are the Principles of Antifragility Relevant to BCP?
Antifragile by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, is one of those books that everyone in emergency management, business continuity, and risk must read. Should You Pivot in A Crisis
“Pivot,” is a word that has joined the lexicon of phrases linked to the COVID crisis. Businesses are being told to pivot their companies to meet the needs of the new economy. Leading the Leaders Traditional Leaders vs. Servant Leaders
As we continue to explore how to make our plans part of the daily operations for our organizations, do you know how to lead? Leadership does not mean that you have to tell people what to do.
