55: Building and affording a team with Ashley Ebert

Building Your Team Course: www.LindsayJWilliams.com/TAG (enrollment open August 10-17th) Welcome to episode 55 of the Build That Business Podcast! Today, I have the lovely Ashley Ebert to talk about building and affording a team. Ashley works alongside her dad Dale as the Daughter and Dad duo behind the abundance group. They’re a coaching company that helps creative entrepreneurs build their teams. Ashley owns one of the largest wedding planning companies in the group (Simply Elegant), which currently has generated over 3.5 million dollars in sales and a team of over 40 planners. Amazing right?!In other words - this girl knows what she’s talking about. I’ve invited Ashley on the show to talk about building a team today because if I had to guess, it’s something that you might not have thought about. I know a lot of us are solopreneurs in the wedding industry - myself included! So I wanted to bring a different perspective to the podcast today, because I LOVE learning from brilliant minds like Ashley and I’ve told her about us. She knows that a lot of our community are mighty teams of one and bringing on a team can be a little nerve wrecking. So we talk about the opportunity vs. rick, how to afford hiring a team and when to know when you’re ready. And if you love what you learn here today, I want to check out Ashley and Dales new course called Building Your Team - It officially launches TODAY today August 10th (if you’re listening to this when the episode drops). It’s a step by step course to lead you from solopreneur, to a leader of a thriving team. They walk you through how to structure your team, how to find and interview amazing talent, onboarding, payroll, legal - all the things. If you’re at the stage in your business where you’re thinking about maybe bringing on some help, I want you to check this out because doors are only open from August 10th-17th. 54: How to know your ideal client and attract more just like them

Females on Fire Summit with Hayley Luckadoo (FREE ticket): www.LindsayJWilliams.com/fire I’d be willing to bet that you’ve heard the term, “Ideal Client”. It’s kind of this vague marketing term that we all know we need to narrow down, but sometimes we overcomplicate it. We brainstorm some imaginary person on paper that checks off all of the boxes without really thinking about who we actually enjoy working with. But what I told you, that your ideal client is probably someone you’ve already worked with before? Someone right under your nose! In today’s episode, we’ll break down: 1. What exactly is an ideal client and how do you find them and more people exactly like them? 2. How to generate more leads into your wedding business. 3. How to strategize, plan, and write your marketing content to speak directly to the customers you want to serve. Thanks for tuning in to Build That Business! These two powerhouses in the industry and I've been a listener of their podcast from day one. So, when they replied that they'd love to have me on the show - I was beyond excited. And I can tell you, these ladies are a riot. They're hilarious, wildly smart, and so genuinely kind. I can honestly say that this is the favorite interview that I've ever done as a guest. So much so that I asked them if I could share it on my show. Now this is a little different for the podcast because I'm sharing my interview, from Elisabeth's and Cami's show. This was a conversation that we had as 3 entrepreneurs in the stationery world about putting people over profit. I hope that you'll listen with an open heart because the customer service approach that we talked about in the episode is really what helped all 3 of us grow our businesses. I hope that this interview gives you a different view of the entrepreneur that lands in your earbuds each and every week - it was fun to be on the other side of the mic for once! So without further ado, here is my interview on The Biz Birthday Bash podcast.

50: How to get noticed in your business - PR for creative entrepreneurs with Meghan Ely

Welcome to the Build that Business podcast, episode number 50. Let me ask you, when you hear the word “PR” - what comes to mind? Is it something you’re implementing in your wedding business or do you brush it off and jot it down on the to-do list for “someday when I have more time?” I’ll admit, I was the latter for far too long but once I realized the power of PR, it opened so many new doors for my business and that’s why I’m excited to introduce you to our guest today. In this episode, I’m sitting down with Meghan Ely of OFD Consulting and we are talking about all things PR - how to get press for your business. 48: How are you, really? with Jenna Kutcher

I am so excited to introduce you to your new digital marketing best friend - she really needs no introduction but here it is: She’s a mom of two, the host of the Goal Digger podcast, author, educator, and the one helping us ask better questions, Jenna Kutcher. In today’s episode, we dug into topics like how to take a leap of faith, how a season of hustle got her to the harvest she has today (I asked if she would’ve done anything differently as she built her empire), and how to learn to listen to your intuition… we covered it ALL just for your ears today. In her debut book, “How Are You Really?” Jenna goes a step further with the question all of us seem to skim past. When someone asks “How are you?” … I’m going to guess that you reply with “Fine, Good, Great, Hanging in there!” I know, I’m guilty of it too. But Jenna added one simple word that can change everything - that can start us on a path to creating our own truly fulfilled life. She asks, “How are you, really?” What if we stopped ourselves and truthfully answered that question? What truths might we uncover? Jenna pulls back the layers and shows us how to find that answer. And how to create the future we want with the tools we have - by getting to know the most important person on the journey - ourselves. The book releases June 28th but if you’re tuning in before then, you can preorder now atwww.howareyoureallybook.com (and snag her amazing pre-order bonuses). Oh, and Jenna and I have an extra special treat for you. We’re giving away 10 copies of the book! All you need to do is screenshot yourself listening and tag Jenna and I. I’ll draw the winners on Launch day (June 28th) Without further ado - let’s welcome Ms. Jenna Kutcher to the show! Ready to dive in? In today's episode, we'll cover: 1. How to take a leap of faith when you don’t have the security cushion of your 9-5 (maybe due to the pandemic, recession, lay offs). 2. Is hustle really a dirty word? I asked Jenna about her seasons of hustle as she built her empire and if she would do anything differently today. 3. How to trust your intuition. Jenna teaches us how to listen to our own voice and how to make decisions that align with our values and goals for our life. Thanks for tuning into today’s episode of the Build That Business Podcast! Can I be honest with you for a sec? I didn’t want to record this episode because it kind of feels like I’m breaking bad news to a friend. I see so many people in my community eager to add on more, and say yes to all of these new and exciting opportunities - and I know this lights you up but as your BUSINESS coach - I have to grab you by the shoulders, look you in the eye and break something to you. This is KILLING your wedding business. What If I told you that I was able to grow my wedding stationery business to $300k in yearly revenue by only offering 3 paper types, 95% digital printing and really none of the fancy upgrades. Because let me break it down - the more variables you add the more complicated things get. Finding vendors, sourcing material, production time, production process, quoting, even things like encouraging your couples to make a decision or say yes to working with you. KEEP IT SIMPLE. And I know in an industry like the wedding industry this isn’t always easy. People want what they want and new trends are popping up all the time. It can be so easy to hop from one thing to the next and lose sight of how you want to run your business. So today, I want to talk more about your offerings (your products and services) and how pairing this down is going to change your business. In today's episode, we'll cover how doing it all is killing your margins, profits, quoting process and production. 41: How to make your competition irrelevant

Free training mentioned in the episode: LindsayJWilliams.com/masterclass Free guide mentioned in the episode: LindsayJWilliams.com/competitionBook mention in the episode: Blue Ocean Strategy by W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne You’re listening to the Build That Business podcast, episode 41. I don’t know if anyone listening can relate to this - but when I first started my business I constantly looked at what the competition was doing. I built my website just like theirs, I chose my brand colors to look similar to theirs. I used language like, ‘We’ or ‘Our team of experts' to make me look bigger than I was so that I could be in the same league as the big wedding stationery companies. Can anyone relate to this? Or maybe you’re following a bunch of your competitors and you’re getting ideas from there? They’re doing instagram reels so you need to do reels. They’re offering a certain type of service, so maybe that’s something you should offer? I know I’m not alone here. So today, we're NOT going to talk about how to compare yourself to your competition, we’re not going to talk about how to get ahead, or how to be better than them. We're going to go a step above all of that … we’re going to cover how to make the competition totally irrelevant. 37: Struggling with consistency? Here’s your permission to let it go

Link to free class mentioned in the episode: LindsayJWilliams.com/masterclass(How I 10x'd My Wedding Stationery Business - $30k to $300k) Welcome to the Build That Business podcast, episode number 37. Today is going to be a short episode, because we’re talking about the importance of taking a creative break and I’m going to practice what I preach. I know that being an entrepreneur can bring along stressors. From family obligations to juggling your client’s needs, to growing your business, to that little voice in the back of your head reminding you of all of the things you need to be doing. And trust me I get it, It’s kind of stressful isn’t it? You set out to start your own business for freedom, it’s supposed to be rewarding, inspiring and fun - and yet, we feel overwhelmed, and we feel isolated, we feel guilty that this life is what we wanted but we’re still not happy all the time. I know for me it feels so chaotic, being a mom of a toddler, running a business - it sometimes feels like everything's on fire all the time and you’re just running from one thing to the next (can you relate). To me it’s like, “can I just get a minute to think about what the heck I’m doing?” So, that’s all I wanted to do in this episode - is just give you permission to take a minute. Will you take a deep breath with me and recognize the value of stepping back and strategically planning what we're doing? Isn't it funny how we forget this stuff? We forget to pause, plan, think. We think there’s no time for it but in reality this is the most important thing you can do for your business. So press play on this episode and let's give ourselves permission to pause... FREEBIES TO GROW YOUR BUSINESS: www.LindsayJWilliams.com/freebies JOIN OUR FREE FACEBOOK GROUP: www.LindsayJWilliams.com/group CONNECT ON INSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/mslindsayjwilliams/ SHOW NOTES: www.LindsayJWilliams.com/shownotes/37

Welcome to The Build That business podcast, episode number 36. Today we are talking about how to control the chaos and leave your couples breathless (in the best way). I have the honor of sitting down with the one and only Gabby Chapin, a wedding photographer and educator and the perfect person to walk us through this. So without future ado, let's dive into the episode! In today's episode, we'll cover: 1. So today we’re going to be talking about controlling the chaos. And, this topic has a very different meaning after the hell of a year we’ve all been through as wedding professionals. I see a common thread that we’re all just really burnt out. What advice would you give to a wedding pro listening to this who feels like the wheels have totally fallen off the bus this year? Dates postponed, details changing, couples on edge… how to regain some of that control and order in your business? 2. What's the single most important thing you do, BEFORE the wedding day, to promote a smooth flow of events? 3. How do you get clients to give you what you need to perform to the best of your abilities?4. How do you communicate what your boundaries are with your clients? 5. When clients toe the line of your set boundaries, what do you do to guide them back into your higher functioning zone? Thanks for tuning into today’s episode of the Build That Business Podcast! 35: How you can book 12 appointments at your first bridal show

Enrollment for The Profitable Pro Bundle is now OPEN! Get my new course, The Bridal Show Blueprint + 25 other resources for just $97. Click here to snag it: www.LindsayJWilliams.com/bundle* Doors Close Friday, March 18th * Welcome to the Build That Business podcast, episode number 35. Today, we’re talking about my favorite thing to talk about, Bridal Shows. They are my number one source of leads and I personally think they’re the most under-rated lead generation source in the wedding industry. We average 25k PER SHOW. That’s right, $25,000 every bridal show we go to. Today, I’m breaking down how we do that and specifically how I scheduled 12 appointments at my first show. These 12 appointments started a snowball effect to get me from $30k to $300k in yearly revenue in just 5 years. You see, I’ve since perfected my bridal show strategy and now it’s our number one source of leads. But first, I gotta address the elephant in the room. Let me ask you, have you ever thought about these things? “Bridal shows are full of budget shoppers”“My ideal customers don’t go to bridal shows” “The bridal shows in my area are not the same as yours, Lindsay. They’re not big, they’re not well attended”No, I’m not a mind reader. I just know this might be what you think when you hear me say Bridal Shows. Listen, I’ve heard all the excuses. You can continue to pretend like you’re too good for bridal shows, but you’re doing yourself a MAJOR disservice. The reason bridal shows are not working for you has nothing to do with any of the above, it has to do with the fact that you’re just signing up and showing up. What are you doing to warm up the lead before the show? So that by the time people walk by your booth, they know you and are ready to book an appointment. Couples come to these shows ready to plan. Hundreds of people who are engaged and need your services are walking right by your booth. If you cant book at least a few weddings, you’re doing something wrong. And I say all of this with ALL THE LOVE in the world, because I want you to win. I know the power of bridal shows and with just a few tweaks to your strategy, you’ll see how powerful these lead generating machines are too. Have I convinced you to give them a shot yet? With everything that has changed around COVID in the past couple of years, could you speak to consumer behavior and how it has transformed the way technology is used in business?2. You had zero experience in tech when you and your sister-in-law decided to launch Rock Paper Coin, a software platform that serves the wedding and event industry. Can you tell us what that was like? What did you have to learn before getting it off the ground? What were your biggest challenges? Feel free to speak about the tech itself or the startup experience as an industry newbie — or both!3. Say a new entrepreneur is in the early stages of growing their startup. They’ve been in business about 1-3 years, they have a steady flow of customers, and they’re on the cusp of hitting their next-level revenue goal. Where should they consider implementing new tech in their business to support sustainable growth?4. Now, the same question — but for seasoned entrepreneurs. They have 5+ years of experience, they likely have a team, and they are already pretty comfortable with tech. Their systems may not be optimized fully, but they serve their purpose and keep the company running. What are their next steps in terms of adding new tech to the mix?5. For listeners who feel like they probably need to make changes in 2022 but don’t know where to begin, can you provide some advice for getting their tech systems in order this year? Where do they start?6. If our listeners walk away with one piece of advice to implement in their businesses tomorrow, what would you want it to be? 27: A holiday message from Lindsay

Hi there, everyone! This isn’t going to be your typical episode, it’s just a quick hello, a thank you and some holiday wishes. Thank you for allowing me to come on your journey of building your business this year. I’m just so grateful for your support and for the opportunity to be in your ear buds week after week. This podcast has been one of the most rewarding (and fun) things I’ve done in my business and I can’t wait to see where it takes all of us in 2022. Whether you just started your business this year, or you’ve been in this game for a while - I want to tell you how proud I am of you. I’m sure you don’t hear it enough, but you’re doing a great job. We entrepreneurs are a magical breed. We’ve been through hell and back this pandemic and we’re still swinging. We’re still fighting our way through this and we will find a way to thrive again. I want to remind you to keep going this year. To stand back up when things get hard and that it’s also okay to sit down once in a while if you need to. This has been hard. Building a business is not easy in normal circumstances, throw a pandemic on top of that it’s a whole new beast. So, as we head into the new year, I hope you’re excited for the fresh start. I hope you feel powerful and I hope you know just how strong you are. If you need a reminder, sit with a cup of coffee and just reflect on all you've overcome. I remember sitting in my office chair right around this time last year and I was so exhausted. I just took a deep breath and I said, “You did it Linds. You did good.” And right then and there I shut the computer down until the new year. So, please take a minute today to reflect on how strong you are and tell yourself, You did it. You made it through probably some of the hardest years your business will ever see. We have proven to ourselves that we can make it through anything. You are strong, you are powerful and you will be force to be reckoned with in 2022. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and new year. As always, I’m here if you need anything. Keep on building those businesses and cheers to new horizons next year.

11: How to Scale Your Business as a Solopreneur

Today, we’re going to talk about How to Scale Your Business as a Solopreneur. Think solopreneurs can't scale? Think again. Where are my mighty teams of one? I’m here raising my hand with you, girlfriends. And I understand the unique challenges (and rewards) of building and scaling your business as a solopreneur. I’m here to bust the age old myth that solopreneurs can’t scale. - Maybe you’ve hit a cap in your business and don’t think you have any room to scale. - Maybe you’re a service based creative entrepreneur and think it’s just physically impossible to scale your business. - OR Maybe you have no doubt you could scale your business to multi-6 figures, but you believe you would never have time for your family so you’re not interested. ... I’ve heard it all, I’ve thought it all. I’m here to call BS on all of it. You can absolutely scale your business to 6 figures and beyond AND have freedom in your life and business (infact, the steps I’m going to share today will give you MORE freedom). I said all of these things and guess what? I scaled from $30k in year one, to $300k in yearly revenue (without burnout). In this episode, I'm sharing the exact steps I took to simplify and scale my business. We'll talk about what you need to focus on, eliminate, and streamline to get you to multi 6-figures while still maintaining the freedom in your life. In today's episode, we'll cover: - How to simplify your process and streamline your business so that you can scale as a solopreneur - The unique challenges and struggles that solopreneurs face - How to automate your business using tools (Honeybook for proposals and invoices, Calendly for scheduling appointments and Planoly for planning and batching social media) - How to choose the right business mentor, podcast, books or resources - What to simplify in your business so that you can scale (your offerings, your prices and quoting and your appointments) I’ll also share a bit of my journey of how I was able to scale my wedding stationery business from $30k to $300k as a solopreneur. 09: 3 things you must say NO to if you want more freedom in your life and business

Today, we’re going to talk about the three things you must say NO to if you want more freedom in your life and business. Is saying, “No” difficult for you? For a while in my business (and life for that matter), this was one of the hardest things for me to do. But, when I got more comfortable graciously declining things that weren’t right for me, or things that I just frankly didn’t want to do - my business and life transformed. I truly believed that this right here, saying NO, is one of the main factors of the success I’ve built in my business. If I could give just one piece of advice to entrepreneurs who want to grow their business, it’s this. You have to stay saying YES to less. For you, for your clients, for the growth of your business. Ready to get more of your time and energy back? Ready to just breathe a sigh of relief knowing that your schedule will not be so full? In today's episode, we'll cover: - How to say no without feeling guilty - How to politely and gracious say no to an opportunity that isn’t right for you - What you should say no to, so that you can grow your business - Why entrepreneurs are somethings scared to say no or to miss an opportunity (hello scarcity mindset) I’ll also share a bit of my journey of how I was able to get comfortable saying No, so that I could say yes to things that mattered to my life and business. 07: Achieving your profit goal: The formula I used to grow my business $100k in one year

Today, we’re going to talk about gaining clarity in your business by setting one PROFIT goal. One of the most challenging parts about being an entrepreneur, especially in the beginning of your journey, is gaining a clear vision of your financial goals and knowing the steps that you need to take to reach them. Years ago as a new small business owner and solopreneur, I was obsessed with tracking our revenue. Revenue was what I focused on, revenue was how I set our financial goals. But, as you can probably guess, at the end of the year when we looked at our numbers, the actual profit that we took home (or lack of) was alarming. It was then that I took a step back to figure out my profit goal. This set off a whole chain of events that eventually got us to financial freedom and grew my business by 6 figures that year. It was so empowering to know exactly where I needed to be to reach my goal, so every time I sat down to work, I knew where we were headed. I could look at what we were doing and ask myself, “Are we on track? Do we need to course correct?” When you have sight of the end goal, those questions are easy to answer. I’m going to help you do in this episode.By the end of this episode, I want you to have a crystal clear vision of your profit goal. I want you to feel confident that you can hit it. AND I want you to have a tangible realistic plan to get there. In today's episode, we'll cover: - How to set a realistic financial profit goal - How to stay on track with your progress and know your numbers in your business - Tangible steps to actually achieve your profit goal - How to adjust your pricing, translation values, costs, and margins to make those goals easier to hit. - A free goal setting worksheet that I created to help you get there I’ll also share a bit of my journey of how I grew my business by $100k in just one year by setting a profit goal, and taking the steps I needed to take to hit it. Let’s dive in!
