Interview #51 | The Truth About My Murder: Dr Richard Shepherd discusses the TRUE CRIME original series' second season

I welcome back retired forensic pathologist Dr Richard Shepherd to the show in this interview episode. In December 2023, TRUE CRIME (formerly CBS Reality) announced that its original true crime series, 'The Truth About My Murder', would return to the screens in 2024 after the international success of its first season. The new batch of episodes welcomes back Dr Shepherd, one of the world’s leading forensic scientists, as he tackles ten new complex murder cases (six from the UK and four from the USA), guiding the audience through each victim’s post-mortem to reveal the truth behind the crimes they were subjected to. Using ground-breaking technology called an 'Anatomage Table' that uses digitally scanned sample bodies, Dr Shepherd investigates various murder cases where pathology played a leading role in solving them and bringing the killers to justice. The series premiered on TRUE CRIME on January 9, 2024. All episodes are available to watch on WATCH FREE UK after being broadcast. Lost in Panama: The Enigmatic Story of Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon (Boquete, Panama, 2014)

In a departure from my usual coverage of British murder cases, I bring you an off-season collaboration episode that delves into a mysterious and highly debated case from the Republic of Panama, Central America. Mark and Bethan join me from the excellent Seeing Red true crime podcast, with Mark telling us the story of Dutch students Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon, who disappeared on April 1, 2014, whilst hiking the El Pianista Trail in the country's mountain town of Boquete. Two months later, the remains of whom most people accept belonged to the two women were found, including a pelvic bone and a foot still inside a boot. Lisanne's appeared to have decomposed naturally, but strangely, Kris' bones were stark white, as if they had been bleached. Their causes of death have never been determined. A backpack recovered by a local contained a camera with 90 photos taken on April 8 between 1 am and 4 am. Most of the images are of near-complete darkness. However, some slightly clearer ones, including one showing the back of what's believed to be Kris's head, have led to debates over who took them and what happened to the two women. I recently appeared on an episode of Seeing Red when I told Mark and Bethan the tragic story of the murder of Orianna Crilly-Cifrova. You can listen to it here: S10 Ep10: The Murder of 13-month-old Orianna Crilly-Cifrova You can find and support Seeing Red at seeingredpodcast.co.uk Join my Patreon community at patreon.com/britishmurders for exclusive perks, including early access to ad-free episodes, bonus content, exciting giveaways, and much more! Interview #45 | Crime and Punishment in Tudor England with April Taylor

I welcome April Taylor to the show in this interview episode to discuss her new book, 'Crime and Punishment in Tudor England: From Alchemists to Zealots.' The book tells the story of the law's enactment and its penalties from Henry VII to Elizabeth I. It's arranged in alphabetical order of crimes and recounts tales of blackmail, infanticide, kidnapping, heresy, and sumptuary laws. Researched meticulously and told with occasional low-key humour, the book tells stories such as that of John Daniell and how he tried to blackmail the Earl of Essex; the Stafford insurrection of 1486, the first serious opposition to the new king; the activities of conman extraordinaire, Gregory Wisdom, and many more. The book also includes Tavern Talk (snippets of quirky information). April was born in the historic county of Lincolnshire and caught the history bug from a young age. She has always been fascinated by the physical manifestation of past events, particularly the Tudor period. That interest deepened when she discovered one of the most important events of Henry VIII's reign, the Lincolnshire Rebellion that led to the Pilgrimage of Grace in 1536, which started eight miles from where April was born. 'Crime and Punishment in Tudor England: From Alchemists to Zealots' was released on September 20, 2023, and is available to purchase here: Crime and Punishment in Tudor England | Pen and Sword History ***This interview was recorded on October 24, 2023. Interview #44 | The Criminal Class: Memoir of a Prison Teacher with Paul MacNamara

I welcome Paul MacNamara to the show in this interview episode to discuss his debut book, 'The Criminal Class: Memoir of a Prison Teacher.' Paul was born in Sydney and has worked as an educator in several correctional centres in Australia. He has also worked as a teacher in the juvenile justice system. He never held a political position on the prison system and knew very little of the workings of a jail. Through 'The Criminal Class', Paul has created a thought-provoking tale based on his surreal and eye-opening experience that is - all at once - tragic, amusing and entertaining. The film and television rights to Paul's book have been acquired by Bondi Beach Productions, a multi-award-winning Film and TV production company with offices in Sydney, Los Angeles and New York. Interview #42 | Beyond the Prison Bars: A Conversation with Ex-Governor Vanessa Frake-Harris MBE

I welcome Vanessa Frake-Harris MBE to the show in this interview episode to discuss her book, 'The Governor: My Life Inside Britain's Most Notorious Prisons.' Having worked for 16 years in a high-security women's prison dealing with the likes of Rosemary West and Myra Hindley, Vanessa Frake-Harris thought she'd seen it all. That was until she was transferred to the notorious Wormwood Scrubs. Thrust into a 'man's world', her no-nonsense approach and fearless attitude saw her swiftly rise through the ranks. From dealing with celebrity criminals and busting drug rings to recruiting informers and being subject to violent attacks, her hard-hitting but often humorous memoir reveals all about life behind bars in unflinching detail. Vanessa was awarded an MBE for her work for the prison service in 2012. She retired early from the prison service, after 26 years, while the Government funding was still in place and things were going well in her job as she wanted to go out on a high. More recently, in a complete career change, she baked cakes at Angela Reed's Cafe in Saffron Walden and volunteers at Wood Green Animal Sanctuary. Chesterfield's Darkest Day: The 1977 Pottery Cottage Murders

In this off-season episode, I bring you the story of the murders of Amy Minton, Arthur Minton, Richard Moran and Sarah Moran in a case commonly referred to as the Pottery Cottage murders. As told by my guest Sally-Anne Martyn, this case has fallen somewhat under the radar, given it took place slap-bang in the middle of the Yorkshire Ripper's killing spree. Escaped convict William Hughes held five members of the Minton/Moran family hostage for over 50+ hours, killing all but Gill Moran. Hughes attempted to escape once the police were informed, but a shootout followed, leaving him dead at the hands of Derbyshire Constabulary. He was the first person to be shot dead by that particular force. Interview #38 | The True Story of 'Line of Duty' with Robin Jarossi

I welcome journalist and writer Robin Jarossi back to the show in this interview episode to discuss his book 'The Real Ted Hastings: The True Story of the Copper at the Heart of Line of Duty'. 'Line of Duty' holds its status as today's defining TV crime drama. The conspiracy theme of the series chimes at a time when public institutions and representatives are distrusted. Ted Hastings, the show's head of anti-corruption, has emerged as the beating heart of the series. Robin's book reveals how the compelling drama reflects real crimes, events and figures, most notably that of Robert Mark and his battle against Met corruption. During his four years and eleven months as commissioner, Mark saw 478 men leave the force following or in anticipation of criminal/disciplinary proceedings. Departures in the previous decade had averaged about 16 a year. Mark's extraordinary career established the need for a dedicated team to investigate corruption that lives on today. Robin's book was released on May 11, 2023, and is available to purchase here: The Real Ted Hastings | Mardle Books Robin can be reached at his website: jarossi.com ***This interview was recorded on May 18, 2023. Interview #37 | Dispatches From a Crime Reporter: Behind the Headlines with Martin Brunt

I welcome Martin Brunt to the show in this interview episode to discuss his career as a crime correspondent. Since joining Sky News for its launch in 1989, Martin has delivered a series of exclusive reports while covering the Cromwell Street killings, the murder of TV presenter Jill Dando, the trial of terrorist Carlos the Jackal, the London 7/7 bombings, the disappearance of Madeleine McCann and the Hatton Garden diamond heist. Before Sky News launched, he was chief reporter at the Sunday Mirror and worked for local newspapers in Kent. Martin is known for his unparalleled connections and specialist knowledge that allow him to see beyond a specific crime and view the context in which it has been committed. Interview #36 | Britain's Drug War: The Real Inside Story with Neil Woods

I welcome Neil Woods to the show in this interview episode to discuss his career as a former UK police officer and undercover drugs operative. Neil worked undercover between 1993 and 2007, befriending and gaining the trust of some of Britain's most violent and unpredictable criminals. He's now an active member of the international drug policy reform movement. With the insight that can only come from having fought on its front lines, Neil saw the true futility of the War on Drugs - that it demonises those who need help and empowers the worst elements in society.    Neil is a board member of the Law Enforcement Action Partnership (LEAP) in the USA and the U.K. (LEAP UK).   LEAP is a growing international organisation that advocates an evidence-based drug policy and related criminal justice reforms. Interview #33 | The Lynette White Case: Author John Williams Reflects on His Career and the Story of 'The Cardiff Three'

I welcome Welsh author John Williams to the show in this interview episode to discuss his career and the Lynette White murder case. In 1994, John released 'Bloody Valentine', a non-fiction book about the murder of a young woman called Lynette White in the Cardiff docklands (aka Tiger Bay) on Valentine's Day 1988. It's also the story of the miscarriage of justice after three black men, 'The Cardiff Three', were wrongly convicted of her murder. It's a brutally frank tale of racism and police corruption, terrible misogynist violence and the grim realities of sex work. It's a book that got so close to the bone that John was sued for libel by the police and received death threats from various minor characters. It's an unforgettable portrait of life in the underbelly of Thatcher's Britain. Interview #32 | The Untold Story: Matt Johnson and John Murray Discuss 'No Ordinary Day' and the Murder of WPC Yvonne Fletcher

I welcome former police officers Matt Johnson and John Murray to the show in this interview episode to discuss their new book 'No Ordinary Day'. On April 17, 1984, as demonstrators gathered outside the Libyan embassy in London, two gunmen waited inside. At 10.18 am, automatic gunfire rained down on the protestors, and WPC Yvonne Fletcher fell, mortally wounded. As his friend lay dying, PC John Murray made her a promise that he would not rest until those responsible had been brought to justice. Thirty-seven years would pass before he was able to fulfil that undertaking. While researching this moving account of one man’s dogged pursuit of justice for a murdered colleague, Matt Johnson uncovered secret-service deals and government duplicity, all part of a plan to force an end to the National Union of Mineworkers strike. He discovered the real reason Yvonne’s killers were allowed to go free and how events that day led to thirty years of growing political control of policing, resulting in the disarray increasingly evident today. The book pulls seemingly unconnected threads into a coherent and shocking whole. It provides startling insights into how decisions taken by our politicians and the actions of our intelligence agencies, supposedly in our best interests, may be anything but. Against All Odds: The Unbelievable Story of Alison Botha

In a departure from my usual coverage of British murder cases, I bring you an off-season episode that delves into a profoundly compelling story from South Africa. As told by my guest Lorraine Purdon, the case of Alison Botha is not a murder story. Instead, it's an awe-inspiring account of survival. I feel compelled to issue a severe content warning for this episode because it contains alarming and graphic elements. I have no problem admitting that I was uncomfortable hearing some aspects of the raw and brutal nature of what happened to Alison. Nevertheless, I believe it is crucial to shine a light on it as it showcases the remarkable strength of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable horrors. In December 1994, Alison was abducted in the city of Gqeberha, known as Port Elizabeth at the time, and subjected to a brutal assault by two men that seemed destined to end in tragedy. Left for dead in a remote location, she faced insurmountable odds against survival. Lorraine recounts Alison's incredible escape, her fight for justice and her unwavering dedication to empowering violence survivors. ***If you or someone you know has been affected by sexual assault or rape, dedicated helplines are available to provide guidance, resources, and a listening ear to survivors. The plane was forced to land at Luqa Airport in Malta due to serious pressurization problems and dangerously low fuel levels. A subsequent raid on the aircraft by Egyptian troops killed 56 of the 86 passengers, 2 of the 3 hijackers and 2 of the 6 crew members. Jelka Pesic, Milan Nenadic and David Segoviano | The Murder of Alexandra Pesic | Feat. Bobbie Holmes

In the sixth volume of Killer British Murder Stories, Bobbie Holmes of Killer Stories tells me the story of Alexandra Pesic's murder. Former beauty queen and dental assistant Alexandra met a fellow Yugoslavian woman named Jelka Pesic whilst attending an open house with her mum in Vancouver, Canada. Alexandra was soon introduced to Jelka's son, Joe, and the pair went on to marry. Jelka was an overbearing "monster-in-law", making life extremely difficult for Alexandra. Finally, things got so bad that Alexandra divorced Joe and was granted custody of their son, Brandon. Hawley Harvey Crippen | The Murder of Cora Crippen | Feat. Zevon Odelberg from Kinda Murdery

In this mid-season episode, I'm joined by Zevon Odelberg of Kinda Murdery, who will tell me (and you) the story of Hawley Harvey Crippen. Dr Crippen, or Dr Devil's Breath, was an American homoeopath charged with murdering his wife, Cora "Belle" Crippen, in London in 1910. Scotland Yard found the torso of a human body at Crippen's house in Holloway, and it was identified as Cora's, despite it being headless, limbless and boneless. Crippen was hanged for the murder on November 23, 1910, but a recent case review shows that mitochondrial DNA confirms that the remains were not those of Cora Crippen. The Court of Appeal refused to hear the case to pardon Crippen posthumously. Zevon also discusses the 2019 murder of Adrian Murphy by Joel Osei and Diana Cristea. If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available. In this episode of British Murders, I go on a European murder tour as aspiring author Christian Raphael tells me the story of the Hinterkaifeck murders. On March 31, 1922, the six inhabitants of a small farmstead in Bavaria, Germany, were brutally murdered by an unknown assailant. S03E01 - Joanna Dennehy (The Peterborough Ditch Murders)

In the first episode of British Murders Season 3, I tell the story of the Peterborough Ditch Murders committed by Joanna Dennehy.Between March 19, 2013, and March 29, 2013, Dennehy killed three men in cold blood and dumped their respective bodies in ditches on the outskirts of Peterborough. She then attempted to kill two more men on the streets of Hereford, whom she'd picked at random, by attacking them with a knife. As a result, Dennehy was handed a Whole Life Order on February 28, 2014, becoming only the third women in the history of the UK to receive one after Myra Hindley and Rose West.Follow British Murders on social media:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/britishpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/britishmurdersTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@britishmurdersTwitter: https://twitter.com/britishmurdersYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/BritishMurdersPodcastMerchandise available here:https://teespring.com/stores/britishmurdersSupport the show on Patreon for early access to ad-free-episodes:https://www.patreon.com/britishmurdersMake a one-off donation here:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/britishmurders All episodes are available on my website:https://www.spreaker.com/show/british-murdersPlease send any British murder case suggestions to:britishmurderspodcast@gmail.comIntro music:David John Brady - 'Throw Down the Gauntlet'https://linktr.ee/davidjohnbradymusicMy recording equipment:Shure SM57 Dynamic MicFocusrite Scarlett Solo USB Audio InterfaceAudacityEdited in:Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2019AudacityMastered in:AuphonicReferences:Joanna Christine Dennehy. Donald "Pee Wee" Gaskins | Killer British Murder Stories Vol. 2 Feat. Bobbie Holmes

In the second volume of Killer British Murder Stories, I discuss the case of American serial killer Donald "Pee Wee" Gaskins with Bobbie Holmes.Gaskins was an American serial killer and convicted rapist from South Carolina who stabbed, shot, drowned and poisoned more than a dozen people. Before his convictions for murder, Pee Wee Gaskins had a long history of criminal activities resulting in prison sentences for assault, burglary, and statutory rape.He claims to have killed 110 people in total, but those claims could never be validated. He was executed by the electric chair on September 6, 1991.This is the second of two collaboration episodes Bobbie and I recently recorded. For part one, in which I tell Bobbie the story of Reynhard Sinaga, check out Killer Stories. In typical Bobbie Holmes fashion, rather than refer to Gaskins by his real name "Donald", she instead went with "Ronald".You can find and support 'Killer Stories' here:https://linktr.ee/KillerStoriesFollow British Murders on social media:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/britishpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/britishmurdersTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@britishmurdersTwitter: https://twitter.com/britishmurdersYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/BritishMurdersPodcastMerchandise available here:https://teespring.com/stores/britishmurdersSupport the show on Patreon for early access to ad-free-episodes:https://www.patreon.com/britishmurdersMake a one-off donation here:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/britishmurders All episodes are available on my website:https://www.spreaker.com/show/british-murdersPlease send any British murder case suggestions to:britishmurderspodcast@gmail.comIntro music:David John Brady - 'Throw Down the Gauntlet'https://linktr.ee/davidjohnbradymusicMy recording equipment:Shure SM57 Dynamic MicFocusrite Scarlett Solo USB Audio InterfaceRecorded in:ZoomEdited in:Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2019AudacityBobbie's References:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Henry_Gaskinshttp://www.murderpedia.org/male.G/g1/gaskins-donald-henry.htmhttps://www.thoughtco.com/donald-pee-wee-gaskins-973165https://allthatsinteresting.com/pee-wee-gaskinsRosewood, J. BONUS | Halloween (2018) | Movie Review feat. Once Upon a Nightmare

In this episode, I am joined by my good friend Lorraine from the true crime and horror podcast 'Once Upon a Nightmare'. Lorraine and I discuss the 2018 slasher film 'Halloween', the 11th instalment in the Halloween film series. There are plenty of differing opinions on display here as well as many laughs. "The M1 Maniac" Robert Black

In the Season 2 special of British Murders, I tell the story of Scottish paedophile and serial killer Robert Black, one of Britain's most notorious and deadly serial child killers. Black was convicted in 1994 of sexually assaulting and murdering three young girls aged between 5 and 11 as well as attempting to kidnap another 15-year old during the 1980s. He was handed 10 concurrent life sentences with a minimum term of 35 years before later being convicted in 2011 of murdering a 9-year-old girl in Northern Ireland in 1981. Robert Black died of natural causes at Maghaberry prison on January 12, 2016.
