Why Did Joseph Smith Attempt to Secure the Book of Mormon Copyright in Canada? #556
In early 1830, as the Book of Mormon was at press, Joseph Smith sent some trusted agents to Canada to secure the copyright to the Book of Mormon in that country and throughout the British Commonwealth. The trip, however, was unsuccessful. The recently rediscovered text of the revelation behind this episode and additional historical and legal evidence provides context to this often neglected but important incident in the early history of the Restoration.

Why Did Oliver Cowdery Come Back to the Church? #605
Latter-day Saints are no strangers to the fact that even the best, brightest, and spiritually strongest of them can have the Church withdraw fellowship from them. Such was the case with the Church's "second elder" (Doctrine and Covenants 20:3) Oliver Cowdery. Despite being one of the founding members of the Church and the many miraculous experiences he had with the Angel Moroni and the Restoration, Cowdery was excommunicated in April 1838. Happily, Cowdery returned to the Church and was rebaptized on November 12, 1848. What did Oliver do while he was out of the Church? Why did he return? What can today's Latter-day Saints learn from Oliver's experiences of being excommunicated and returning to the Church? Read this KnoWhy to find out.

On the dawn of one of the most daring and dangerous events of World War II, the typical soldier would hardly be thinking deep thoughts about puzzling intellectual problems. What Converted Sidney Rigdon to the Book of Mormon? #601
Whatever imperfections Sidney Rigdon had, he was a defender and advocate of the divine truthfulness of the Book of Mormon from the time he became converted until his dying breath. For that, he deserves gratitude from believers in the Book of Mormon today, as well as for his many other important and dedicated contributions in building up of the kingdom of God during the earliest years of the Restoration.

Why Did Hiram Page Remain Faithful to the Book of Mormon? #599
Hiram Page is best remembered among Latter-day Saints as the subject of the revelation given to Joseph Smith now canonized as section 28 of the Doctrine and Covenants where the Lord appoints Joseph Smith as the only one authorized to receive revelation on behalf of the whole Church. However, Page is also counted among the eight witnesses who hefted the plates from which the Book of Mormon was translated and gave their names to the world to testify to the plates' reality. This KnoWhy tracks Page's contributions to the Restoration--including his abiding witnesses to the Book of Mormon's divinity--up to his early death in the 1850s.

Why Was Martin Harris Needed to Pay for the Printing of the Book of Mormon? #597
Martin Harris made the most significant contribution to the early establishment and growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when he mortgaged his farm to help pay for the printing and binding of the first 5000 copies of the Book of Mormon. Why Did the Lord Command the Three Witnesses to Rely upon His Word? #596
While some things remain unconfirmed, the archaeological evidence trends favorably for the Book of Mormon.
This ongoing trend shows that God’s promise to the Three Witnesses continues to be fulfilled today and increasing archaeological evidence supports the Book of Mormon. It also gives people today reason to exercise faith when confronting unanswered questions about ancient scripture.

Why Was Joseph Smith Accused of Being a “Disorderly Person ” in 1826? #594
In 1825, Joseph Smith and his father Joseph Sr. were hired by a man named Josiah Stowell to help dig for treasure in an old Spanish silver mine. Stowell hired Joseph specifically upon hearing of a miraculous gift he possessed to see the unseen. In 1826, Peter Bridgeman, one of Stowell's nephews, charged Joseph Smith with being a "disorderly person"--a charge issued against many people including those that pretended to see treasure by magical means to defraud people of their money--and brought him to court in Bainbridge, New York. This charge and subsequent court trial has brought on speculation by many critics intent on showing Joseph Smith was a con artist and thus undermining his credibility in claiming that he received divine direction to translate an ancient record of scripture, to establish a church, and so forth. This KnoWhy examines the relevant historical documents and demonstrates, upon examining all available evidence about the trial, that Joseph Smith was likely acquitted of the charge.

When Moroni visited Joseph Smith on the night of September 21, 1823, he did more than just tell him about “a book deposited, written upon gold plates,” though that was the primary purpose of his visit (Joseph Smith—History 1:34). He also quoted various biblical prophecies, indicating that they were soon to be fulfilled (JS—H 1:36–40). Among those prophecies was Malachi 3–4, but Joseph remembered that when quoting Malachi 4, there was “a little variation from the way it reads in our Bibles” (JS—H 1:36).

Why was it Easy to Join a Church in Joseph Smith’s Day? #589
By 1820, religious freedom had been spreading and developing in America for nearly two hundred years. These centuries worth of developments increasingly allowed people to follow their own religious conscience. These legally granted religious freedoms made the Restoration possible.

Why Did Moroni Conclude with So Many Exhortations? #588
As Moroni prepared to seal up the record that he and his father had worked so diligently to compile, abridge, and preserve, he thought it was important to add some final “words by way of exhortation” to future generations of Lamanites and ultimately to all the world (Moroni 10:2). He then proceeded to use the word “exhort” eight times, each time offering a specific exhortation.

Why Were the Unburied Dead So Troubling to the Jaredites? #586
In the Old Testament, people were often warned that if they did not repent, they would die and their bodies—instead of being properly buried—would be devoured by wild animals. Such a fate was seen by many ancient peoples not only as a tragedy, as it would be today, but a disgrace and an indication of divine judgment. That judgment would carry over into the afterlife, where a person’s role and identity was thought to be determined and facilitated by where and how their body was buried.

What Do We Know About Nephite Language? #583
The Book of Mormon says that the Nephites wrote in Egyptian and Hebrew (Mormon 9:32-33), but these languages had been "altered" to the point that "none other people knoweth our language" (Mormon 9:34). New evidence linking the Uto-Aztecan language family (spoken primarily in western Mexico and the southwestern US) to Semitic and Egyptian languages may help us better understand how Nephite language changed over time.

In the Book of Mormon, the resurrected Lord administered the sacrament to the Nephite multitude (3 Nephi 18:1–9), and explained that participating in this ordinance signaled “that ye are willing to do that which I have commanded you” (3 Nephi 18:10). Immediately afterwards, He commanded them to “watch and pray always,” and especially to “pray in your families unto the Father” (3 Nephi 18:15, 21).

How Are Samuel the Lamanite and the Biblical Prophet Samuel Similar? #576
Samuel the Lamanite shares striking similarities to his namesake, Samuel of the Old Testament. Both Samuel the Lamanite and the biblical Samuel had similar prophetic calls, foretold a coming Messiah, wielded God’s sword of justice, and subverted societal expectations. These similarities highlight how Samuel the Lamanite and Samuel the Israelite both fulfilled archetypal traits of true biblical prophets, despite their unassuming backgrounds. The Nephites would not have expected a prophet to come from among the Lamnites, but the Lord clearly qualifies whom He calls.

Why Did Alma Draw on the Teachings of Abinadi? #571
Astute readers of the Book of Mormon may have noticed that “Alma [the Younger] shows an affinity for the words of Abinadi.” Nowhere is this affinity more evident than in his counsel to his son Corianton, where research by John L. Hilton III indicates that Alma made at least thirteen allusions or direct quotations to Abinadi’s teachings (see table and appendix).

Why Did Alma See God Surrounded by Angels? #570
Alma 36 is a powerful story of repentance and redemption, but why did Alma tell it to Helaman instead of Corianton, his son in most need of repentance? Scholars have found that Alma is also relating a prophetic call narrative, which conforms to the expectations of ancient Israel and pre-Columbian America. Thus, Alma related his own prophetic commission to his eldest son and successor as he simultaneously commissioned Helaman to his own prophetic call.

Why Did Alma Talk about Planting a Seed in the Heart? #569
This week for Come, Follow Me we read about Faith. Alma’s metaphor would have naturally resonated with peasant farmers of a predominately agricultural society, much like the Savior’s Parable of the Sower was relatable to his audience of laborers and agriculturalists in Palestine. Yet the imagery reviewed here suggests that there were additional factors that made this metaphor meaningful within the possible cultural backdrop of Book of Mormon peoples.

Why Does the Book of Mormon Use So Many Different Terms for “Law”? #568
Throughout the Book of Mormon a set of synonymous (or near-synonymous) legal terms is often used to emphasize the righteousness or obedience of a group or an individual.
Latter-day Saint legal scholar John W. Welch has explained that this seemingly redundant repetition is what’s called a “pleonastic list,” and is similar to the list of near-synonymous legal terms found in the Hebrew Bible.

Why did the Ammonites Covenant Not to Take Up Arms? #567
After the Anti-Nephi-Lehies were converted to the gospel of Jesus Christ, the buried their weapons of war and covenanted to never shed blood again. Shortly thereafter, they are attacked by their unconverted brethren, and allow themselves to be slain rather than fight back. Because of this moving and courageous act, some have called the Anti-Nephi-Lehies "pacifists," but various details in their story illustrate that this is not entirely accurate. Rather than a principled renunciation of war, it seems the Anti-Nephi-Lehies were renouncing their past participation in a truly murderous and blood-thirsty culture. Nonetheless, the people of Ammon remain an enduring example of the power of the gospel to bring peace and overcome violence.

Why Did Alma Respond in the Way He Did to the “Order of Nehor” in Ammonihah? #566
The people of Ammonihah were of the order of Nehor, so it can be useful to consider Alma's teachings to them, especially in Alma 12-13, as a response to the five main teachings of Nehor summarized in Alma 1:3-4. In this light, it becomes clear why Alma focused on the plan of redemption and the true order of the priesthood.

How Can Contrasts Teach Us about True Conversion (Knowhy #562)
It can be easy to think that Alma the Younger was converted by an angel, and thus wish that we could personally have such miraculous experiences in order to become truly converted. However, a careful analysis of Alma’s story reveals that true conversion does not come from dramatic experiences external to ourselves, like seeing an angel; rather, rather it comes through the inward, personal struggle to repent and turn our hearts to Christ, allowing his atonement to cleanse of our sins and turn us into “new creatures.” Alma’s rebirth and conversion is literarily illustrated in Mosiah 27 by setting out 8 contrasting parallels between his behavior before conversion and his changed behavior after he is “born of God.” This contrast illustrates that Alma changed completely and totally, in every way, from who he was before his conversion, demonstrating that true and lasting conversion has a comprehensive impact on how we live our lives.

Why is a “Ceremony” Mentioned After King Noah is Executed ? #561
The use of the word "ceremony" in Mosiah 19:24 is puzzling, since nothing ceremonial seems to be occurring in this passage. Royal Skousen has suggested it is a scribal error, while others are argued that there is a ceremonial context for this passage. Whatever the case may be, exploring the different possibilities can yield a variety of interesting insights into this portion of the Book of Mormon.

How Does Christ “Seal You His? #558
To conclude his historic speech, King Benjamin expressed the hope that his people “should be steadfast and immoveable, always abounding in good works, that Christ, the Lord God Omnipotent, may seal you his”. In the ancient biblical world, seals were used to make important political pronouncements, legal contracts, and religious actionss official.
In the ancient Near East, seals validated the legal ownership of goods and materials. They marked and limited the right to possess objects to the person in whose name they were sealed. Thus, within an ancient Israelite context, to be sealed as Christ’s is to be literally marked with His name, as belonging to Him.
The practice of sealing documents was also meant to ensure their authenticity and integrity. Seals protected the contents of a document or container from tampering. Thus, when Christ “seals you his” he is, in effect, attesting to or protecting your integrity and purity.
With this ancient context in mind, we understand the importance of the sealing power. Those whom Christ has “sealed” as His are they on whom Christ has placed His name. Because they have this name written upon their hearts, He can claimthem as His own. They are His, and He will protect and care for them always.
And now you know why

Why Did the Nephites Preserve Some Items as “National Treasures”? #557
When Benjamin is preparing Mosiah to be crowned king, he “gave him charge” over the plates of brass and the plates of Nephi, along with the sword of Laban and the ball/director (Liahona). Why were these items important to pass on and preserve? Many scholars have pointed out that they were both sacred objects representing God’s hand in leading the Nephites to the promised land and emblems of Nephite kingship which established the credibility and legitimacy of the Nephite rulers. They were parallel to the sacred objects stored in the ark of the covenant among the ancient Israelites.

Did Joseph Smith’s Mother Believe He Could Have Written the Book of Mormon? #555
Lucy Mack Smith, mother of the Prophet, left behind an important history of the life of Joseph Smith. In her history she describes young Joseph giving the Smith family “amusing recitals” on the ancient inhabitants of the Americas. Some have used this to portray Joseph as having a wild, vivid imagination that lent itself to the composition of the Book of Mormon. A closer look at Lucy’s history, however, undermines this line of argumentation. Read in context, her history strengthens faith in her son’s claims.

Why Did Jacob Include the Case of Sherem? #554
Careful examination reveals that the exchange between Jacob and Sherem is a legal case that hinged on the three interrelated accusations of apostasy, blasphemy, and false prophecy—all capital crimes in ancient Israel. In Sherem’s eyes, Jacob had twisted the law into the worship of a false god, falsely prophesied to come “many hundred years hence”.

Why Did Jacob Highlight Nephi’s Role as a Protector? #553
Jacob is the only person in all of scripture to use the word protector. Nephi compares Satan’s tactics to “flaxen cords” which eventually become “strong cords” that bind down sinners “forever” (2 Nephi 26:22). Understanding the process of turning flax fibers first into threads or strands and then into strong cords or rope—a process that goes back into ancient times and alluded to in biblical imagery—can help us better understand the subtle craftiness that is implied in Nephi's metaphor.

Why Does Isaiah Prophesy of the Daughter of Zion? #550
The daughter of Zion is a motif from the Old Testament that finds new, powerful meaning in the Book of Mormon's Isaiah chapters. With the destruction of the Nephites at the forefront of Nephi's mind, he prophecies of a day when the words of the Book of Mormon will bring salvation and redemption to the remnant of his seed, as embodied by the daughter of Zion. Endowed with beautiful garments of power and glory, the daughter of Zion is the divine, feminine manifestation of the righteous passing through the veil of mortality, and entering into the joy, rest, and holiness of the Lord.

Why Did Jacob Condemn “Deliberately” Killing? #549
Speaking at the newly built Nephite temple, near the time Nephi was crowned king, during one of the Israelite autumn festivals, Jacob provided a list of ten “woes” similar to the Ten Commandments. Jacob does not simply repeat the exact same ten commandments, however. He makes changes and adaptations based on the circumstances of his people. For example, he modified the law again homicide in a way to ensure Nephi’s slaying of Laban could not be misunderstood as a violation of the law. Jacob’s adaptation of the original Ten Commandments illustrates the ancient scriptural precedent for continued clarifications of the Lord’s standards, such as with the recent adjustments to the temple recommend interview questions.

Why Did Nephi Prophesy of Christopher Columbus? #547
It is important to acknowledge that not everything Columbus did was inspired by God. Nephi only says the Spirit would inspire him to cross the many waters. He says nothing that endorses Columbus’s actions after he arrives in the promised land. Indeed, as Nephi prophesied, the arrival of this “man among the Gentiles” led to the tragic scattering and smiting of the Lamanites throughout the New World (1 Nephi 13:14).
Some historians have all argued persuasively that Columbus was driven by a religious worldview in which he saw himself playing a crucial role as God’s instrument in the unfolding events of the end times.

What is the Significance of the Great and Spacious Building? #546
The great and spacious building in Lehi's dream was identified by the angel as representing "the pride and vain imaginations of the children of men" (1 Nephi 12:18). Lehi's contemporary Jeremiah speaks of the pride of Jerusalem and her people. The Hebrew word used by Jeremiah means "to be/become high." The word imaginations may be based upon a Hebrew word also found in Jeremiah which denotes a kind of defiant stubbornness in opposition to God which leads to calamity. Vanity (as in vain) is likely based on a Hebrew word meaning "vapor" and often signifies something that is fleeting, worthless, and does not last. Each of these words shed light on the nature of the great and specious building.

Why Did Lehi and Jeremiah Find Themselves in a Dark and Dreary Wilderness? #544
In his dream of the Tree of Life Lehi found himself in a dark and dreary wilderness. While others have noted that the desert imagery makes sense in light of Lehi's own travels in the desert, the prophecies of Jeremiah shed additional light on Lehi's vision. Why New Testament Words and Phrases Are in the Book of Mormon Part 9 #542
This KnoWhy will look at the probability that the translation process was more one of “tight control” over the words in English Joseph Smith dictated to his scribes. Evidence suggests that Joseph Smith was not responsible for the language of the translation, which was revealed to him word for word. Under this account, it is possible that whatever divine process was responsible for producing the English translation was also responsible for purposefully integrating relevant and appropriate New Testament phrasing into the text.

Why Do New Testament Words and Phrases Show up in the Book of Mormon? (Part 8) #540
The segments in this series, up to this point, have focused on possible ancient sources for the New Testament-type language that is found in the Book of Mormon, working with the assumption that many of these words and phrases would have been found on the plates of Mormon delivered to Joseph Smith. It is also arguable, however, that much of what is recognized as New Testament language first entered into the text of the Book of Mormon at the level of the English translation.

Why New Testament Words and Phrases Are in the Book of Mormon (Part 6) #535
Continuing on with the notion that some of the New Testament material in the Book of Mormon may actually have originally come from the Old Testament, Part 6 of this series will present evidence that indicates that, in some instances, the New Testament and the Book of Mormon may have both been quoting from similar collections of Old Testament passages that were circulated in ancient times. With this in mind, the Book of Mormon’s use of groups of scriptural passages similar to those used in places in the New Testament can be seen not as a cheap imitation of the New Testament but more likely as the use of a similar ancient collection of biblical passages on a given topic.

Teachings of Jesus You Probably Never Noticed Before
Acts 2 records Peter’s words to the gathered multitude on the day of Pentecost. After testifying that “God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ” (v. 36), the people he was addressing “were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?” Peter’s response to the crowd will probably sound familiar to you because it summarizes some of the basics of the gospel: “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost” (v. 38).

The unique way that the Book of Mormon is a symbol of Jesus Christ’s Resurrection
The good news that Jesus is risen from the dead is a message of light and joy for a dark and weary world. The testimony of New Testament witnesses confirms that he He lives and because He lives we may also have eternal life if we will follow Him. He was seen of Mary at the tomb, and angels declared His resurrection to other righteous women of faith (Mark 16:1–7; Luke 24:1–10; John 20:11–18). He was seen by Peter, James, Thomas and the apostles and other disciples who saw, spoke, ate with Him and touched the wounds in His hands, feet and side (Luke 24:13–43; John 20:19–31). As John testified, “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life” (1 John 1:1). Peter testified, “For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty” (2 Peter 1:16).

Why New Testament Words and Phrases Are in the Book of Mormon Part 5 #533
Another likely source for phrases in the Book of Mormon that seem to match parts of the New Testament is the plates of brass that Lehi’s family had in their possession. Far more often than readers usually realize, many New Testament passages are quoting or paraphrasing Old Testament texts that could have been available to the Nephites through the plates of brass. Although this is not the case for all New Testament material in the Book of Mormon, this perspective can be a helpful one for those who encounter New Testament language in their Book of Mormon reading and want to know why it is there. Readers can analyze the relevant New Testament passages (and perhaps consult biblical commentaries and other scholarly resources) to see if the New Testament author may have been utilizing a more ancient Old Testament text in his writing.

Why Do New Testament Words and Phrases Show Up in the Book of Mormon? (Part 4) #531
Jesus and other heavenly messengers spoke to Book of Mormon prophets before the Savior's appearance in the New World, These prophets may have learned New Testament-like phrases directly from them. Part 4 of this series will discuss specific examples of this potential source of New Testament language in the Book of Mormon. Note that Nephi and the apostle John were given essentially the same vision (1 Nephi 14:24–25), although they were greatly separated by time and space. If the Holy Ghost was able to give the same vision to both Nephi and John, He may have done the same for other prophets in both the Bible and the Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon itself is “another testament of Jesus Christ” which contains many teachings, prophecies, and revelations that confirm and further help us understand similar ideas revealed in the Bible.

4 Reasons why Latter-day Saints should reverence and study the Crucifixion more
The Atonement of Jesus Christ is the most central doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Latter-day Saints believe that all mankind can be saved through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, and that He can empathize with all the sufferings, infirmities, and pain inherent to mortality. Throughout the history of Christ’s restored Church, its leaders and members have put sacred emphasis on Gethsemane as the place where Christ suffered for mankind’s sins and afflictions. Thus, for many Latter-day Saints, Gethsemane has become a central focus of Christ’s Atonement.
However, both ancient and modern prophets have encouraged us to also look to the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ as the source of salvation.

Archaeologists have now documented a massive eruption which took place in late March or April during the first century AD., the most likely time of Christ's death.

Why Do New Testament Words and Phrases Show up in the Book of Mormon? (Part 3) #529
This Part 3 of our New Testament series will focus on evidence from the Book of Mormon narrative which indicates that some New Testament language present was introduced into the text through direct revelation from the Lord.
Words close to Matthew 3:2–3 show up in Alma 7:9; 9:25; 10:20, and Helaman 5:32. In the case of Alma 7:9, and also in the other cases introduced into the discussion above, the words in question were delivered to Alma the Younger directly by the Holy Spirit. Amulek and others heard similar words from angels, and the Lamanites heard such words by a voice from heaven. In its own terms, the Book of Mormon supplies the origin of these messages, offering an answer to the question of why these words are found in the Book of Mormon. They are there because they were revealed on those occasions by revelation and the word of prophecy.

What Does it Mean to Remember?
Every week, Latter-day Saints gather in congregations across the world and partake of the sacrament. This act hearkens back to the Savior’s Last Supper, when He commanded His disciples to eat bread and drink wine—symbols of His body and blood—in “remembrance” of Him (Luke 22:19–20).1 In the sacrament prayers recorded in restoration scripture, we are likewise commanded to “always remember” the Savior (D&C 20:77, 79).

How the parable of the Good Samaritan is a type and shadow of Jesus Christ
One of the most influential stories told by Jesus is the parable of the Good Samaritan. As a result of this scripture, people all over the world speak of being a Good Samaritan, of doing good for people who are in need. But as important as the parable’s ethical content obviously is, Jesus’ story may have more significance than most people ever imagine. An ancient but now almost forgotten tradition, extending back to the early days of Christianity, sees this tale as much more than a story or parable. According to this early Christian view, the narrative is a type and shadow of the plan of salvation.

Seeing Ourselves in a Tale of Two Prodigals
Few of the parables of Jesus are better known than the story of the prodigal son. Why Do New Testament Words and Phrases Show Up in the Book of Mormon? 525
In addition to the more obvious biblical writings that could have been present on the plates of brass, there is also language in the Book of Mormon that is similar to what we find in later sections of the Old Testament and also the New Testament. Beyond 3 Nephi 12-14, many other parallels or similarities to New Testament passages can be found throughout the Book of Mormon, the presence of which may be challenging to understand. According to some counts, approximately 850 phrases or passages from the Old Testament and 700 from the New Testament can be found in the Book of Mormon.
There may be many reasons why biblical words and phrases show up in the Book of Mormon, several of which are explained briefly in this KnoWhy. Although we do not know for sure which explanation, or combination of explanations, stands behind each of the many Old and New Testament phrases found in the Book of Mormon, it is important to remember that the Book of Mormon was written by ancient prophets but was meant to be read by people in our time – people who often know the Bible, especially the New Testament, well and are accustomed to recognizing KJV literary styles as holy scripture. As such, finding biblical language in the Book of Mormon may very well be a fulfillment of the ancient prophet Nephi’s inspired words when he taught that God “speaketh unto men according to their language, unto their understanding” (2 Nephi 31:3; D&C 1:24).

Why Does Part of the Long Ending of Mark Show Up in the Book of Mormon? 522
The language of Mormon 9:22–24 is nearly identical to that of Mark 16:15–18, where the Savior gives a very similar commission to his Old World disciples. Yet some question whether the Savior really gave such a commission, in either the Old World or the New, since some of the earliest copies of the Gospel of Mark are missing the text in Mark 16:9–20. This textual absence, combined with other complicated textual and stylistic considerations, has led scholars to question whether Mark originally included verses 9–20, commonly referred to as the “long ending” of Mark.
But before jumping to conclusions about the authenticity of either Mark 16:15–18, or Mormon 9:22–24, there are several considerations to keep in mind.

Did the Book of Mormon Witnesses Really See What They Claimed? #521
Throughout their lives, none of the witnesses of the Book of Mormon ever denied their testimonies. Yet some people have questioned the reality of their experiences, especially the encounter with the plates reported by the Three Witnesses. This is because these witnesses claimed to have beheld the gold plates in a vision, despite the fact that it seemed as real to them as everyday visual experiences. A comprehensive analysis of the statements made by the Three Witnesses demonstrates that they truly believed that what they had seen was real. Moreover, a key to correctly interpreting their statements can be found in the scriptures themselves, which demonstrate that it is difficult for people to tell whether or not they are in or out of their own natural bodies when beholding a vision.

Why Did Jesus Teach Using Parables?
One of the notable aspects of Jesus’ ministry is that He frequently taught using parables, or short religiously instructive stories “that make use of characters, situations, and customs familiar to their audience.” In fact, Jesus used nearly 50 parables and other metaphors during his ministry as recorded in the New Testament Gospels.

The KJV translation of Luke 22:43–44 depicts Jesus as bleeding great drops of bloody sweat. The Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants both affirm that Jesus suffered greatly in Gethsemane and bled from every pore, seemingly harking back to the verses in Luke. However, New Testament scholarship has complicated the textual history and meaning of Luke 22:43–44. This KnoWhy explores this subject from a perspective that incorporates both Restoration scripture and recent scholarship.

Why Does the Book of Mosiah Refer to the Exodus Narrative? 516
The Abinadi and Alma narratives in Mosiah often allude to the Exodus narrative. Both the Pharaoh and King Noah caused the people to work on their extensive building project for them. Both Moses and Abinadi escaped people who were attempting to kill them and then returned to prophesy at the Lord’s command. Both the Israelites and Alma’s people fled into the wilderness from the king. Both Moses and Abinadi opposed priests of the royal court. Both Moses and Alma gave commandments to the people while in the wilderness. The Lord tried the faith of both the Israelite and Nephites, but then delivered them and helped them arrive at their destination.

3 Ways the Savior Healed People by His Touch. And How You Can Be Healed.
The miracles of the New Testament symbolize different aspects of the Savior’s divinity, power, and love. One thing to note about these miracles, is how Jesus often used physical touch to heal. Jesus ministered to the one and cared individually for His followers, as is demonstrated by His personal touch in New Testament healing stories. He visited Jairus’ daughter in her home and took her by the hand (Mark 5:35–43; Matthew 9:23–26), He touched the eyes of two blind men as He healed them (Matthew 9:27–31), He touched and cleansed a leper (Matthew 8:1–4).

3 things we learn from the different versions of the Lord’s Prayer
When Jesus gave his Sermon at the Temple in 3 Nephi, he taught his Nephite audience, “when ye pray, use not vain repetitions” (3 Nephi 13:7), just as he had taught his disciples in the Old World (Matthew 6:7). In light of this teaching, it should come as no surprise that there are differences in each version of the Lord’s Prayer recorded in scripture (Matthew 6:9–13; 3 Nephi 13:9–13; Luke 11:2–4). Looking specifically at the ways the Book of Mormon version is different from the two versions in the Bible, readers can gain at least three valuable insights.

6 Things to Consider When a Church Leader Commits a Serious Sin
When any trusted local or general leader in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints falls away from gospel truths or standards, it may cause faithful members who are aware of the situation to feel unsettled, uncertain, or confused. Why would God, who knows both the past and the future, allow someone who is secretly unworthy (or who will become unworthy during the course of his or her calling) to hold a high and sacred position in Christ’s true Church? While possible answers to this question are probably as unique as the various circumstances in which any case might arise, the Book of Mormon offers some divinely revealed insights on this topic.

In several ways, the authors and editors of the Book of Mormon offered commentary to help readers anticipate what will come next in its pages. Its writers informed readers about the content and structure of what would follow, testified to the truthfulness of impending narratives, and occasionally explained that further information would be provided about topics that had only been briefly discussed. These types of editorial promises—or, in other words, commitments to discuss or revisit certain topics—are plentifully scattered throughout the Book of Mormon. Impressively, these promises are also consistently and accurately fulfilled, even when their fulfillments are separated from the promises by large amounts of text.

Sometimes, the Book of Mormon uses the word good the way any of us might use it, but sometimes it uses it in a higher sense that means being more like God. How Can the Book of Mormon Provide Peace and Meaning to Those in Military Service? #496
Many ancient prophets as well as modern apostles and other general authorities have served their countries faithfully as members of the military. The prophet Mormon himself led the Nephite armies multiple times into battle. He was intimately familiar with the horrors of war. He also knew that the last days, our day, would be filled with “wars and rumors of war” (1 Nephi 12:2). It is fitting, then, that the Book of Mormon contains so much war. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the military can use the Book of Mormon to help give comfort and meaning to the chaos of war. The scriptures know the horrors of war that a soldier must go through. Present-day prophets, apostles and other general authorities also know for themselves the soldier’s pain. The Book of Mormon and modern church leaders can give hope and perspective to saints in war: there is healing and life after death, all because of the Jesus Christ and his atonement.

Why Does Nephi Begin by Saying “I, Nephi . . .”? #476
The best-known words in all of the Book of Mormon may very well be Nephi’s opening line: “I, Nephi, having been born of goodly parents.” Many ancient Near Eastern texts begin this way, and these texts help explain why Nephi would start his record the same way.

A number of scholars have proposed more specific dates Lehi's departure, ranging from 605 BC-588 BC. Each proposed date has it's own strengths and weaknesses, and provides a slightly different context to consider for the background of the opening events in the Book of Mormon.

Why Are Lehi’s Visions Like Those of Other Prophets in His Day? #469
It has been common in LDS scholarship to compare Lehi, the founding patriarch-prophet of the Book of Mormon, to perhaps the most famous prophet in the Jerusalem of Lehi’s time, Jeremiah. However, there were many other prophets called by God at roughly the same time, including Habakkuk, Ezekiel, Daniel, and others. A study of the words and phrases used in the accounts of the prophetic callings and visions of these contemporaries reveals similarities that go beyond the common message of Jerusalem’s destruction.
