In this episode we sit down with....Jamie Edwards. Jamie is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 17 years experience in the field. She has worked in violence against women and victims/survivors of crime organizations, child welfare, long-term care, hospice, and has been a psychotherapist for over 12 years. She is a body-oriented therapist that uses holistic approaches to promote healing and specializes in trauma/survival states, stress response, and grief/bereavement. Jamie received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Criminal Justice from Marist College and a Masters in Social Work from Fordham University. She is a certified rape crisis counselor in the state of New York, completed the 40 hour Illinois Domestic Violence Training, and has over 40 hours of training and consultation in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), a therapy known for helping those suffering from trauma. Most recently, Jamie has completed over 200 hours of training and consultation in Somatic Experiencing (SE), a body-oriented psychotherapy based on the understanding of the body and mind’s response to stress and threat. Jamie has a personal mindfulness and meditation practice, including attending silent meditation retreats in the vipassana/insight meditation practice. After struggling with binge eating disorder for many years, Zoe realized in graduate school that her 'food issues' actually had a name. For many years, she saw previous struggles with binge eating disorder as something that would 'hold her back professionally' and would 'cause people to not believe in her.' She's recently come to see that she couldn't have been more wrong, and that in sharing her story, she's been able to help not only motivate people towards full recovery, but also help many people come out of the woodwork and get the support that they deserve. What we talk about: I always felt like I never fit in highschool,I needed some sort of external validation thru something, It felt really good to have a relationship with someone, just bonding with another girls without thinking in my health, I am a very sensitive indivual and introvert, purging helped me with my feeling of comfort, as much as I was surrounded by people, I was lonely, you put so much stress in your body when you purge, It was not always a safe space for me, sometimes I was forced to eat, when you're in your eating disorder, you're seeking control, I wasn´t able to distract or numb the pain that I was feeling, there was so much pressure in a lot of things that I was not sure about, the first time that I had the sense of myself outside of a team was at work, I didn´t know how to not be busy, slow down and be quiet, there was something that I missed and I needed to still find, It´s okay, this is going to take time to feel comfortable, you need to get to this point instead of restricting yourself, my body wasn´t functioning as I wanted to, I was in pain, what is it look like to be in your own space?, I will not be silent, I will speak for myself, letting go of that perfection of being loud, at some point we have to allow ourselves to grow and change, we always need to learn to grow "I have to start listening to my body because I´ve tried a lot of things and that didn't work" Connect with our guest Kaitlin... In this episode we sit down with... Shary Folkmann. Writer and Dancer. A writer and a dancer, Shary loves finding the rhythm in a sentence or a step. She started performing with a small tap dance troupe when she was a child, and later danced in community theater productions and with the University Dance Theatre Ensemble at the University of Houston where she earned a BA in French Language and Literature. After a year spent teaching English in France, she worked in a variety of spheres from public education to corporate and nonprofit administration. Now a dancer with California Rhythm Project, she also serves as the company’s general manager, and she is a freelance copywriter for a few small businesses. She most enjoys writing about creative people and the work that energizes them.
