“Impermanence” Everything Must Change – with Brandt Ryan
Bill Myers Inspires Over the past year, we all have experienced great change. Change has happened at every turn from our political leadership to our racial awareness, to life on lockdown in quarantine during a global pandemic, to loved ones and friends who are no longer with us today. While this all may seem unusual, it is actually normal that change happens, continuously and constantly in ways we perhaps do not take notice of, but impermanence and constant change is both natural and normal. The biggest challenge we face is not getting stuck. After obtaining a B.A. in Philosophy from Marian University, Brandt Ryan earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Florida International University in 2001. While living in New York he served as an editorial assistant for Zoetrope: All-Story, Francis Ford Coppola’s internationally acclaimed fiction and art magazine. He currently resides in his home town of Indianapolis where he recently wrote and directed his first play, Restitution. *Listen now on the Inspired Choices Network app! https://linktr.ee/inspiredchoicesnetwork ~ More About Bill Myers Inspires ~ Emmy Award-winning actor Bill Myers is an accomplished actor, jazz musician, filmmaker, writer, educator, and speaker. “Blacks & Autism” From Disability to Super Blessing with Antonio Myers
Bill Myers Inspires Recently I was the guest on the podcast TonioTimeDaily hosted by Mr. Antonio Myers. He is a brilliant young black man with Autism and he wanted to be a guest on my show. I am happy to have Antonio as my guest and eager to explore the topic of autism and how it affects the black people in America. As a child, other kids tossed epithets my way “out in public” during middle and high school, such as “dumb,” “stupid,” “lazy,” even “retarded.” Once, someone told me that I should be “shut up in a basement.” My friends and I had to defend each other with words seasoned with grace because of the cruelty. I am considered high-functioning on the Autism spectrum. I was unable to speak until the age of four when I was in kindergarten and said my first words: “Stop bullying my friend.” “Educational experts” compared me to a vegetable and believed in the worst in me. I was diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder and although I tried to attend my neighborhood schools, “it wasn’t the best fit.” Most schools in the American education system and most jobs in the American work force can’t service me well because of their lack of understanding of gifted extraordinary people such as myself. I am a high school valedictorian (4.0 in eleventh grade), college graduate (bachelors in Human Services and minor in Psychology, commencement speaker at the ages of 14 and 23, international traveler and I am a designated disability services provider by the DC Department of Disability Services. https://play.acast.com/s/toniotime-1 *Listen now on the Inspired Choices Network app! https://linktr.ee/inspiredchoicesnetwork ~ More About Bill Myers Inspires ~ Emmy Award-winning actor Bill Myers is an accomplished actor, jazz musician, filmmaker, writer, educator, and speaker. “Pause. Reflect.” George Floyd One Year Later with Dr. Winterbourne Jones
Bill Myers Inspires I posted a simple meditation a couple days ago on Facebook "Pause. Reflect. RIP Mr. George Floyd," on the date of his killing one year later. The comments that came from my nearly 5000 Facebook friends regarding George Floyd began with "Career criminal, who committed suicide." from a white, retired Indianapolis Police Officer. The comments and debate that followed inspired me to examine these comments from my friend more closely, while pondering the question of where are we as individuals and a nation one year after George Floyd's murder? The Reverend Dr. Winterbourne LaPucelle Harrison-Jones is a scholar, author, ecclesial leader, and distinguished Churchman out of the linage of Dr. William Augustus Jones, Dr. James Forbes, Dr. Mordecai Wyatt Johnson, The Reverend Marvin Chandler, and Dr. Howard Thurman. “Optimism Today” In A World In Need Of Light – Mark Weinsoff
Bill Myers Inspires Where is Optimism today in a world so in need of light? We live at a time of great suffering and despair; a global pandemic, political division, social distancing and the absence of human touch and interaction, job loss and economic hardships, climate and environmental crises, injustice and inequality, the ever-increasing wealth gap, and the ever-present systemic racism and oppression. More than ever, Optimism is needed. More than "the cup being half-full", Optimism is needed. More than "this too shall pass", Optimism is needed. What role does Optimist International, or optimism have in harnessing the power of positive thinking and limitless possibilities to serve as an agent of hope in addressing the challenges we face today in the 21st century? March 20, 2021 - 11et/10ct/9mt/8pt - Optiforum on music makes people happy:Youtube Live Stream https://youtu.be/PtvDKitzWYM Mark Weinsoff was not always an optimist. The path to the Presidency of Optimist International took him through careers in radio broadcasting, banking, business ownership and technology management. While he encountered the Optimist Creed early on this path, he did not truly incorporate optimism into his life until 16 years after he joined the Northside Optimist Club of Santa Barbara. Mark grew up in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles. After graduating High School, he moved to Goleta to attend the University of California, Santa Barbara (USCB). Mark joined the Northside Optimist Club of Santa Barbara in 1988. Several years later, he was exposed to the science of positive psychology while earning a Master’s Degree at Pepperdine University. In 2004 he began applying the lessons he learned to his life and Optimist Clubs. As President, Mark is focused on all Optimist Clubs becoming Optimistic Clubs applying the five components of well-being scientifically proven by science: optimism, purpose, engagement, relationships and accomplishment. https://optimist.org mark.weinsoff@gmail.com ~ More About Bill Myers Inspires ~ Emmy Award-winning actor Bill Myers is an accomplished actor, jazz musician, filmmaker, writer, educator, and speaker. Memphis Struggles For Justice With MCAP Co-Founder Justin J Pearson
Bill Myers Inspires Memphis has a long history in its struggle for justice. Just as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was killed there standing up for the rights of the city’s impoverished black community in “The Poor Peoples Campaign” more than 50 years ago, Memphis once again finds itself in a fight to protect its poor black community against injustice. This modern day "David versus Goliath" pits the black citizens of Memphis against the big Texas oil company seeking to run an oil pipeline through the heart of the black community and placing the health of these citizens at great risk. The Injustice of corporate greed over the health and well being of the black citizens of Memphis is a classic case of environmental racism. Justin J. Pearson is the fourth son of five boys born to teenage parents in Memphis, Tennessee. Justin J. graduated from Mitchell High School as Valedictorian and Bowdoin College in 2017 majoring in both Government & Legal Studies and Education Studies. He currently lives in Memphis but works at the headquarters of Year Up in Boston, Massachusetts. He is focused on social, racial, and economic justice as Special Assistant to the CEO of Year Up - a national program helping 18 - 24-year-olds gain training and entry-level jobs with corporate partners such as Bank of America, Facebook, and Salesforce. Justin J. is also one of the leaders of Memphis Community Against the Pipeline (MCAP) which is a Black-led environmental justice organization seeking to end the racism and injustices in Memphis with the stopping of the Byhalia Connection Pipeline. Pearson has an unwavering commitment to justice and the pursuit of opportunity for all people. https://www.memphiscap.org Justinjpearson1@gmail.com ~ More About Bill Myers Inspires ~ Emmy Award-winning actor Bill Myers is an accomplished actor, jazz musician, filmmaker, writer, educator, and speaker. Jazz has Been Uprooted ~ Guest Khadifa Wong
Bill Myers Inspires Uprooted is an informative and powerful documentary on the history of Jazz dance by Award-Winning director and filmmaker Khadifa Wong. While America has recognized Jazz as a national treasure and often referred to as America's greatest cultural contribution of the 20th Century to the World, jazz music, culture and dance all seem to suffer the same challenges deeply rooted in racism, which rob the black originators of this art form from the credit that is due them. The key issue this film raises is the distinction between appropriation versus appreciation. Khadifa is an award-winning Director. She trained at the iconic London Studio Centre in all aspects of dance. After 10 years as a Dancer she moved to New York to further study acting. On her return to London, frustrated by the lack of opportunities for actresses of colour, Khadifa wrote, produced and acted in a web series based on her New York experiences. It was then that Khadifa realised her true passion lay behind the camera and she formed her production company to help increase diversity on both sides of the camera. Since then, Khadifa has Directed, The Woman Who Knocked On My Door (Best Indie Short, LA Film Awards) with Finelight Films and executive produced a further 3 multi award winning short films. In 2019 Khadifa directed Black Women Dating White Men Written by Somebody Jones at the Drayton Arms Theatre. Transmission will be her feature-length film directorial debut. https://uprootedfilm.com kavitasmith2@gmail.com ~ More About Bill Myers Inspires ~ Emmy Award-winning actor Bill Myers is an accomplished actor, jazz musician, filmmaker, writer, educator, and speaker. I’m A Descendant of Thomas Jefferson- with Reisha Raney
Bill Myers Inspires As we begin our Black History Month series, let us take an in depth journey into America's history of interracial relationships. The thought that interracial relationships is a "modern trend" or fad in America could not be further from the actual truth. Tune In as we explore these unique relationships that are deeply embedded in America's history with my special guest and host of "Daughter Dialogues" podcast, Ms. Reisha Raney. Reisha Raney is an American tech entrepreneur and oral historian who dedicates her time to telling the unique stories of Black Americans who are descended from veterans of the Revolutionary War. Historians estimate that between 5,000-6,000 enslaved people and free people of color fought in the Revolutionary War, and Reisha has been instrumental in telling their families' stories through her popular podcast, “Daughter Dialogues.” Reisha herself is a descendant of the grandfather of President Thomas Jefferson, one of America’s founding fathers and the third President of the United States. Reisha is related to Mary Turpin, an enslaved Black woman who married Jefferson’s second cousin. Reisha’s relatives, Edwin and Mary Turpin, lived until their deaths as a married couple (although their marriage was not legally recognized) in neighboring houses on a plantation in Goochland County, Virginia. Reisha is also a non-resident fellow at Harvard University’s W. E. B. Du Bois Research Institute at the Hutchins Center for African & African American Research. Under the supervision of Harvard University Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., she conducts her oral history research into Black descendants of the Revolutionary War, Reisha is also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), where she was elected Maryland’s first Black officer in the society. https://www.daughterdialogues.com jocelynbaustin@gmail.com ~ More About Bill Myers Inspires ~ Emmy Award-winning actor Bill Myers is an accomplished actor, jazz musician, filmmaker, writer, educator, and speaker. “Racism & Immigration” – With U.S. Congressman André Carson
Bill Myers Inspires Is America's immigration policy just another manifestation of racism? Over the past 4 years, there have been a number of aggressive actions taken such as building the wall, ICE raids, border separation of families and the caging of children. I Owe My Life To Black People ~ With Richard Propes
Bill Myers Inspires Imagine being a white person born with a life threatening illness and the only people who did not given up on you were black people. Then later finding yourself homeless and black people once again providing guidance, shelter and a pathway forward in your life. Richard Propes shares his powerful story of how black people encouraged, influenced and inspired his life. Since 1989, Indianapolis activist/writer Richard Propes has traveled over 6,000 miles by wheelchair on a one-man mission he calls "The Tenderness Tour," an effort to end violence in the lives of children he began in 1989 with a 41-day, 1000+ mile wheelchair ride around the state of Indiana. While Richard's childhood story is dramatic, from his birth and unexpected survival with spina bifida to his early experiences with childhood sexual abuse, even more dramatic is the story of Richard's survival and creation of a life far beyond anyone's expectations including his own. Now in his early 50's and still far surpassing medical expectations, Richard continues to be an award-winning activist and writer who has been nominated two years in a row for Indy's "Best Human" in the Indy Star's annual community choice awards. In addition to raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for children's organizations worldwide, Propes is the founder of the Race Away From Domestic Violence, an annual 5k event benefiting the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence that is now in its 17th year. A lifelong Indianapolis resident, Richard is the founder/publisher of TheIndependentCritic.com, a member of the Indiana Film Journalists Association, and his reviews are carried on Rotten Tomatoes. He's the author of "The Hallelujah Life" and has produced two short films, an IndyFringe show, a comedy DVD, and a number of poetry readings, concerts, and special events. He's been the recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash, Order of Kentucky Colonels, Prevent Child Abuse America's highest honor the Donna J. “Racism & Civil Rights” White Privilege to Reparations ~ Dr. John Dorhauer
Bill Myers Inspires The topic of racism in America is inescapable because it was a key ingredient that was baked into the cake at the beginning. This is understood by Rev. Dr. John Dorhauer, who has spent a large portion of his life studying and examining racism in America as part of his ministry as he now serves as General Minister and President of the United Church of Christ. in this show, we will explore Dr. Dorhauer's observations of the civil rights movement, white privilege and reparations. The Rev. Dr. John C. Dorhauer, author and theologian, currently serves as ninth General Minister and President of the United Church of Christ. John began his ministry serving First Congregational United Church of Christ and Zion United Church of Christ in rural Missouri. He then served as Associate Conference Minister in the Missouri Mid-South Conference, and then Conference Minister of the Southwest Conference of the UCC prior to his election as General Minister and President. Dorhauer received a B.A. in Philosophy from Cardinal Glennon College (1983), and has a Master of Divinity degree from Eden Theological Seminary (1988), the same year John was ordained in the United Church of Christ. John received a Doctor of Ministry degree from United Theological Seminary (2004); his area of focus -- white privilege and its effects on the church. With a personal theology shaped in the passionate conviction that God is love and God is just, John has embodied the United Church of Christ’s vision of “A Just World for All” throughout his ministry. On October 17, 2014, Dorhauer conducted the first legal same sex wedding in the state of Arizona when he performed the wedding service of David Laurence and Kevin Patterson. In his first term as General Minister and President, recognizing increasing sensitivities in this country around race, John initiated the collaborative creation of a curriculum, “White Privilege: Let’s Talk – A Resource for Transformational Dialogue”. Designed to invite UCC members and others to engage in safe, meaningful, substantive, and bold conversations on race, the curriculum and accompanying facilitator’s guide have been used by both UCC and non-UCC audiences. In addition, John has partnered with the UCC Board of Directors in providing oversight for the articulation of the denomination’s statements of Purpose, Vision and Mission – critical elements for the UCC’s evolving organizational strategy. To activate the new vision, John invited the denomination’s participation in a collective biennial mission initiative, Three Great Loves. In partnership with the UCC Board of Directors – and informed with responses from across the church to the question “what does a transformative UCC need to be in ten years?”-- John has called the church to accomplish essential strategic priorities over the next 10 years to position the church for a transformative future. These include attaining inclusive excellence, developing robust technology infrastructure that benefits every expression of the church, curriculum and training towards “A Just World for All”, strategic organizational alignment consistent with purpose, vision and mission, and platforms to foster and encourage innovative church. The Shaping Our Future Campaign has been launched to generate $4 million in new philanthropic support for marketing, technology and leadership development programs critical to the health and vitality of every expression of the church. More recently, recognizing a need for thought leadership to consider, inform and shape our responsibility for lifelong, cradle-to-the-grave theological formation, John called for a summit on theological formation, From the Ground Up, which was launched in spring 2018. At present, his focus is on re-establishing the primacy of the Local Church and the mutuality of relationship amongst the expressions of the church, undertaking an assessment of the denomination’s assets devoted to resourcing local church ministry relative to the needs of the local church, and operationalizing the alignment of the national setting consistent with the newly established strategic priorities for the UCC. John now serves as Vice-Chair of the National Council of Churches (NCC), and has co-chaired the NCC’s United to End Racism campaign. He has been identified by the Center for American Progress as one of the religious leaders to watch for in 2017. John insists that the Holy Spirit envisions a future in which the United Church of Christ matters. He is calling on the denomination to rethink itself and to consider new ways of being church in light of institutional religion’s changing landscape and emerging shifts in the generational populations – believing that an emergent church is already coming alongside the institutional church. John’s book Beyond Resistance: the Institutional Church Meets the Postmodern World is a call to the body of Christ to accept what the Spirit of the Risen Christ is doing to birth something new, vital, and relevant – all towards nurturing Beloved Community. dorhauerj@ucc.org. https://www.ucc.org/ ~ More About Bill Myers Inspires ~ Emmy Award-winning actor Bill Myers is an accomplished actor, jazz musician, filmmaker, writer, educator, and speaker. “A Broken System” Racism Is A Health Crisis – Guest, Dr. Woody Myers
Bill Myers Inspires 19 States along with numerous cities and counties in America have declared Racism as a public health crisis. How does racism affect public health? Why is racism now a public health crisis? Has racism always been a public health crisis? Dr. Woody Myers is the 2020 candidate for Governor of Indiana. A third-generation Hoosier, he is also a physician, former Indiana State Health Commissioner, business owner, husband, father, and grandfather. An Indianapolis native, Woody is a proud product of Indianapolis public schools and a graduate of Shortridge High School. He completed his undergraduate studies at Stanford University and went on to earn his medical degree from Harvard University at age 23 and a Master of Business Administration from Stanford University. Throughout his remarkable career, Woody addressed important problems with every organization he has led, generating real results and leaving each of them stronger and ready for the challenges ahead. Early in his medical career he worked as an emergency room physician and teacher at the Indiana University School of Medicine. As a young doctor, he saw first-hand the impact that disparity of income has on health outcomes. Patients with the best health insurance often received the best health care, while others did not and has spent his career fighting to change it. At the age of 30, Woody was the youngest to serve as Indiana State Health Commissioner and held his appointment under both Democratic (Evan Bayh) and Republican (Bob Orr) administrations. As Health Commissioner, Woody effectively led over 2,800 employees, oversaw five state institutions and worked every day to improve maternal and child health, chronic disease control, childhood immunization, and preventive health care services. During his tenure, Woody helped make Indiana a leader in AIDS education and gained national recognition when he fought to keep Ryan White – a teenager with AIDS – in school when his school district banned him following his diagnosis. In addition to being a doctor, Woody is a small business owner who has advised nonprofits and large health care companies on improving their products and services for the benefit of patients. Over his career, Woody served as the medical director for Indiana’s largest health care company, and as chief health care officer for Ford Motor Company – where he worked with union officials to develop safety programs and high-quality, comprehensive health care benefits. Under Woody’s leadership as the chief medical officer at WellPoint, Inc. he led the nation in measuring and improving the quality of health care for workers and their families. As a nationally recognized and accomplished leader in public health, Woody is uniquely qualified to lead Indiana in its fight to improve access to affordable, quality health care and to reduce prescription drug costs. Woody lives in Indianapolis with his wife Stacy. Together, they have five children and two grandchildren. Join Woody to make a brighter future for all Indiana. claudia@drwoodymyers.com. https://drwoodymyers.com ~ More About Bill Myers Inspires ~ Emmy Award-winning actor Bill Myers is an accomplished actor, jazz musician, filmmaker, writer, educator, and speaker. Gather At The Table – With Tom DeWolf & Sharon Morgan
Bill Myers Inspires Winner of the Phillis Wheatley Book Award for Nonfiction/Biography & Memoir, "Gather at the Table" authors Sharon Leslie Morgan and Thomas Norman DeWolf join Bill Myers to discuss their Healing Journey as a Daughter of Slavery and a Son of the Slave Trade. Gather at the Table is the story of two everyday people from diverse backgrounds who are on a mission to overcome the trauma of America’s legacy of slavery and the lingering effects of present-day racism. Over a three year period, the interracial pair traveled thousands of miles through twenty-seven states and overseas, building an improbable relationship. Using genealogy as an undercurrent, they visited each other’s families, ancestral towns, court houses, sites of racial terror, cemeteries, plantations and antebellum mansions, seeking to come to terms with the history out of which racism evolved. The book illuminates healing models developed at the Center for Justice & Peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University through their Strategies for Trauma Awareness and Resilience (STAR) and Coming to the Table programs. Eastern Mennonite University is an acclaimed resource for peacebuilding, having introduced trauma healing models in war ravaged countries around the world. Coming to the Table is an initiative focused on bringing together descendants of enslaved people with descendants of slaveholders; providing leadership, resources and a supportive network for those who wish to acknowledge and heal the enduring wounds. The healing model presented in Gather at the Table involves four interrelated practices: Sharing histories of race with openness and honesty; connecting with others across racial lines; exploring healing through dialogue, ritual, apology, etc.; and actively seeking to heal the pervasive, present-day, structural wounds of racial inequality and injustice. Tom and Sharon hope to inspire a national dialogue about the legacies of slavery and racism and offer practical guidance for individuals and groups dedicated to healing America. https://comingtothetable.org/ ~ More About Bill Myers Inspires ~ Emmy Award-winning actor Bill Myers is an accomplished actor, jazz musician, filmmaker, writer, educator, and speaker. “Black Ancestry” ~ Special Guest Sharon Leslie Morgan
Bill Myers Inspires As people love learning about their family tree via websites such as Ancestry.com, black people in America face many hurdles in discovering their ancestry as they were relegated to a status of property rather than as a human being, poor record keeping and the systematic dismantling of the black family unit for generations through the sale of black people as valuable property which resulted from America's institution of slavery. How then can black people search their ancestry? Founder of OurBlackAncestry.com, Sharon Leslie Morgan provides helpful information and guidance as to the challenges, and meaningful steps and paths forward for black people as they embark on the amazing journey of discovering their ancestry, who they are and where they come from. “Inheriting The Trade – Slavery & Racism” With Author Thomas Norman DeWolf
Bill Myers Inspires Imagine discovering that you were a descendant of the largest slave trading family in U.S. history. How would you use that information to discuss slavery and racism? Why is it necessary to address slavery and racism for America to move forward? Thomas Norman DeWolf is an author, public speaker, trainer and workshop facilitator, and, since 2013, has served as Director/Manager for Coming to the Table. He travels extensively throughout the United States speaking and leading workshops and trainings at colleges, universities, conferences, and other venues. He exposes hidden elements of history and shows how traumatic, unhealed wounds from the past continue to impact everyone today. Such wounds are expressed on campuses and elsewhere as racism, sexism, and other forms of intolerance, separation, and hierarchies of human value. With compassion and humor, Tom illuminates a path toward healing and a more hopeful future. Tom is the author of Inheriting the Trade (Beacon Press, 2008), the story of his experiences in the making of the Emmy-nominated, PBS documentary, Traces of the Trade, and co-author, with Sharon Leslie Morgan, of Gather at the Table (Beacon Press, 2012), which won the Phillis Wheatley Award for best Nonfiction/Biography & Memoir in 2013. The African American Jazz Caucus awarded Tom the 2012 Spirit of Freedom Award for Social Justice. Tom is also co-author, with Jodie Geddes, of The Little Book of Racial Healing (Skyhorse, 2019). Other videos show White commenting on the shootings of unarmed African-American men and commenting on how North America was built for white people, claiming "We created a culture and a system of white supremacy that has benefited us for 400 years".
