Tale of a Late Bloomer and Other Teenage Embarrassments

Caitlin Murray was a late bloomer and at fourteen she yearned to have big boobs. In this episode, Caitlin shares an embarrassing story from high school orientation aboard a sailboat when she accidentally exposed her little titties out of the side of her speedo bathing suit in front of her classmates. Caitlin reflects on how embarrassing moments from our youth leave imprints on us and how as we grow older embarrassment becomes somewhat inconsequential and maybe even funny. This is all to say that when our children experience the visceral doom and shame of embarrassment, instead of minimizing it, we can show some empathy and turn it around with some humor.  Tune in to hear from our listeners who submitted their own embarrassing teenage stories!  Follow Caitlin Murray @bigtimeadulting Caitlin's magazine Soul Snacks with everything you need to know Caitlin's favorite brands & affiliate partners: Knockaround Sunglasses (use code BIGTIMEADULTING for 15% OFF)  The best store in the world  The second best store  Submit your "big time adulting moment" and potentially be a guest on the podcast. Diamonds, Danger, and Denial: The Funny Thing About Minimizing Trauma

Our storyteller today is one of our podcast listeners, Alex from Washington state! Alex shares the shocking and dramatic story of being held hostage by a customer while working at Tiffany's and Company. At the time, she minimized the event as a crazy and adventurous brush with danger. Soon after, she suffered from panic attacks and other mental health issues but never connected them to the hostage fiasco. A couple years later she was diagnosed with PTSD which popped the lid on having to confront other traumas from her past and why she was so susceptible to this event.  Join us as Alex walks us through her story in vivid detail. She also talks about the complicated relationship she has with her mother and the abusive she experienced in her first marriage. In anticipation of the birth of her first child, Alex reflects on the lesson she’d like to pass onto her baby girl- to trust her gut and tap into her body's innate wisdom even if it’s at the expense of other people’s comfort.  Join us for this entertaining, suspenseful, and thought-provoking conversation that will leave you on the edge of your seat.  Alex’s snack of choice: Albanese Sour Gummy Bears Follow Caitlin Murray @bigtimeadulting Caitlin's magazine Soul Snacks with everytihng you need to know A few of Caitlin's favorite brands & affiliate partners: Knockaround Sunglasses (use code BIGTIMEADULTING for 15% OFF)  The best store in the world  The second best store  To submit your "big time adulting moment" and potentially be a guest on the podcast, write to us at bigtimeadultingpodcast@gmail.com

The Story Behind Caitlin Murray's Big Time Adulting

You may wonder why Caitlin so confidently makes fun of her kids, bemoans the trials and tribulations of nonstop parenting, dances her ass off in the kitchen like a lunatic, and rattles off pep talks to all the weary moms.  Today, we’re re-releasing Caitlin’s first podcast episode from 2021 when no one really knew she had a podcast. You will giggle and shed tears as Caitlin describes the life-changing event that inspired her to start blogging, posting on Instagram, and podcasting.  In December 2016, her 3-year-old son was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia which set her family on a horrific journey of survival. Caitlin walks us through the heart-wrenching moments that led up to the diagnosis and how it forever shaped and strengthened their family. She also talks about why this experience has given her a license to say whatever the f*** she wants. It’s a story that resonates with moms because it reminds us to trust our gut and advocate for our kids. And its a reminder that humor is essential when going through hard times.  Fast-forward to today, her son is now 10-years-old and thriving alongside his little sister and brother.  Follow Caitlin Murray @bigtimeadulting Peruse Caitlin's magazine Soul Snacks  To submit your "big time adulting moment" and potentially be a guest on the podcast, write to us at bigtimeadultingpodcast@gmail.com The Big Time Adulting podcast is brought to you in part by a few of Caitlin's favorite brands & affiliate partners: Knockaround Sunglasses (use code BIGTIMEADULTING for 15% OFF)  Perfect Bar  The best store in the world  The second best store

The Gift of Blowing It: Rupture and Repair with Aliza Pressman

Today we’re talking about identity, divorce, shame, imperfection and the gift of blowing it with psychologist Dr. Aliza Pressman who is a mother of 2, a clinical and academic wiz, and host of the widely praised parenting podcast Raising Good Humans. In this conversation, Dr. Aliza Pressman discusses how the parenting advice industry has turned into gobbledygook and why she felt it important to write her book, ’The Five Principles of Parenting,’ which teaches parents a manageable framework for raising children: relationships, reflection, regulation, rules, and repair. Aliza reflects on her “big time adulting moment:” letting go of shame and judgment after her divorce. Aliza and Caitlin also discuss navigating unexpected challenges in life, the loss of the life they envisioned, and the need to reconcile their own desires with the responsibilities of parenting. The main takeaway is that we are all flawed humans. We make mistakes. Shit happens we don’t expect. Not everything is in our control. But we do have the power to normalize imperfections, practice self-compassion, and repair our relationships when we mess up.  Aliza reminds us that when we let go of perfect, we can become positive and transformative influences in a children's lives. Staying Bonded With Your Child as They Grow Up

Many of us struggle with the fact that one day our kids will grow up and not need us as much. They will inevitably blaze their own independent lives outside the warm cocoon of our arms. Caitlin welcomes Erin O’Connor to the podcast to discuss secure attachment and why it’s never too late to strengthen the bond we have with our kids. Erin is an academic wiz and a force to be reckoned with in the field of child development. She’s a professor and director of the New York University’s Early Childhood Education program. She holds a Doctorate in Human Development and Psychology from Harvard, a Masters in teaching from Fordham University, and a Masters in school psychology from Columbia University. She co-founded the scientificmommy community which is now called Your Cooper, a platform designed to bring together parents, teachers, and researchers around issues of child development.  In this episode, Erin talks about the ways parents can nurture positive relationships with their children, why it's never too late to strengthen that bond, and how it's not all on us to ensure they're securely attached because research shows that when a child develops a strong relationship with someone outside the immediate family, like a teacher, coach, or relative, it's a good predictor of their social-emotional health and academic success. Tune into this fascinating conversation as Erin weaves scientific research into Caitlin's burning questions about parenting and how to ensure our kids will want to come back to us as they test their independence out in the world.  Check out Your Cooper (an online parenting group reimagined) Follow Caitlin Murray @bigtimeadulting The Big Time Adulting podcast is brought to you in part by a few of Caitlin's favorite brands & affiliate partners: Knockaround Sunglasses (use code BIGTIMEADULTING for 15% OFF)  Perfect Bar  The best store in the world  The second best store

The Burnout is Real

Even though dads today are taking on more housework and childcare than in past generations, moms typically carry ALL the mental load for the family, a term referring to the cognitive logistics, worry, and decision-making involved in managing a household and family. The mental load can be described as an unending mental checklist that anticipates every need for the family and home. This might include strategizing meals, researching schools and the best eczema cream, remembering to schedule doctor's appointments, organizing calendars, managing the family's emotional needs, changing the bed sheets, signing Johnny up for soccer, remembering that the toilet paper is out, snacks are low, or whether you paid the babysitter last week, not to mention the endless worrying about your kids and if you're doing enough. This "invisible labor" often goes unnoticed by your partner. It's exhausting and no surprise we're dealing with an epidemic of burnout. Today’s guest, relationship expert Dr. Morgan Cutlip, PhD, has helped hundreds of thousands of people worldwide learn how to form and maintain healthy relationships. Morgan knows what it feels like to lose yourself in motherhood, and she’s determined to help mothers navigate it better. In this episode, Caitlin and Morgan talk about why carrying the mental load leads to burnout, how to start expressing our needs, and why they hate the term self-care. If that's not enough to lead you in the right direction, Morgan just wrote a book, Love Your Kids Without Losing Yourself. Why Moms Turn to Booze to Cope with Stress

Moms with young kids increased their alcohol consumption by nearly 325% during the pandemic according to a study by RTI International. The term "mommy wine culture" is used to describe moms drinking wine as a way to cope with parenting stresses. Caitlin welcomes professional chef, sommelier, and life coach Molly Zemek to the podcast to talk about the connection between parental stress and booze consumption. Molly shares her story of how over-drinking and over-eating led her down a painful path of ill health, dissatisfaction, and depression and how she changed her mindset and developed new skills to create a healthier relationship with alcohol WITHOUT taking the pleasure out of a good time. Caitlin and Molly talk about unique circumstances around motherhood that lead to habitual drinking, how you might develop a more moderate attitude to drinking, how over-drinking is connected to over-eating, and how to create a drink plan. This conversation is not about vilifying alcohol but will help you explore your relationship to booze in a more holistic way. Perimenopause: What the Hell is Going On?

Perimenopause is top of mind. Hollywood is talking about it. Vaginal creams and supplements are being sold for it. But still, what the hell is going on? As we sail through midlife, how are our fluctuating hormones impacting our bodies and minds and what do we do about it? Dr. Shieva Ghofrany, an OBGYN and insta-glorious expert on all things women’s health, sits down with Caitlin to discuss the predictably unpredictable hormonal shifts of perimenopause. Actual menopause occurs, on average, around age 51 marked by a one year absence of a menstrual period. That means perimenopause is the 10-15 year lead up to menopause that begins somewhere between the late 30s and 40s. Symptoms may include: brain fog, mood swings, feelings of rage, weight gain, heavy periods, vaginal dryness, chin whiskers, lack of libido, insomnia, hot flashes, joint pain, and hair loss. Yay. Often occurring in conjunction with the deranged parenting years, this change in a woman’s life is sure to be miserable and magical, as Dr. Ghofrany puts it. She gives us hope by demystifying this confusing time, equipping listeners with the right questions to ask their doctors, and offering a myriad of treatment options. Maybe we can even embrace this naturally occurring life stage because growing older is a gift and we might as well indulge and enjoy it.  Follow Dr. Shieva Ghofrany @biglovefiercejuju and @tribecalledv Tribe Called V is a virtual women's health platform  ---   Caitlin Murray @bigtimeadulting The Big Time Adulting podcast is brought to you in part by a few of Caitlin's favorite brands & affiliate partners: Knockaround Sunglasses (use code BIGTIMEADULTING for 15% OFF)  Perfect Bar  The best store in the world  The second best store

Self-Healing Anxiety and Chronic Pain with Nicole Sachs

Today, we have the luminous Nicole Sachs, an LCSW, speaker, writer, podcaster, and psychotherapist who has dedicated her work to the treatment of emotional and physical chronic pain. In this episode, Nicole shares her fascinating story of healing her own debilitating back pain through mind/body medicine inspired by Dr. John Sarno who encouraged her to journal about her repressed emotions. Nicole reflects on the watershed moment when she wrote the words, “I hate being a mother,” a proclamation that released an emotional pressure valve and helped her heal her pain and ultimately enriched her relationship with her kids. Through the lens of motherhood, Caitlin and Nicole talk about the link between emotions, anxiety, depression, and chronic pain, and how we can begin to free ourselves from their grips so that we can experience more connection and energy along our parenting journey.  Nicole has developed a process called JournalSpeak also known as “rage on the page,” a type of expressive writing therapy that rewires neural pathways that cause chronic symptoms. How Women Are Taught to Be "Good" with Elise Loehnen

We are delighted to welcome author Elise Loehnen to the pod today. Elise is the former chief content officer of GOOP and the host of the podcast Pulling the Thread. She is here to talk about her new book On Our Best Behavior: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Price Women Pay to Be Good. The seven deadly sins are likely not on your radar, but they are subversively controlling and distorting women’s lives. They are pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, sloth, and anger, all qualities women deny within themselves in order to be “good.” Weaving together history, memoir, and cultural criticism, Elise’s groundbreaking book masterfully reports on this cultural phenomenon and inspires us to untether ourselves from the grip of patriarchy and societal expectations. In this episode, Caitlin and Elise share personal stories about the pressure they feel to over-function and over-compensate as women, the profound ratcheting up of anger and rage they experience in motherhood, how envy can serve as a motivator to discover secret wants and dreams, and the reason why pride is so uncomfortable to feel. We highly recommend grabbing a copy of Elise's book. It will crack you open and help you reclaim the things you sacrifice in order to be a "good" mother, wife, partner, friend, daughter, human.  Connect with Elise: @eliseloehnen Order her book On Our Best Behavior here: www.EliseLoehnen.com Follow me, Caitlin Murray @bigtimeadulting The Big Time Adulting podcast is brought to you in part by a few of my favorite brands & affiliate partners: Knockaround Sunglasses (use code BIGTIMEADULTING for 15% OFF)  Perfect Bar  The best store in the world  The second best store

Interview with Dr. Lucy McBride: The Pandemic and Politics

Dr. McBride and I discussed the current state of the pandemic and the ways in which politics have dictated the policies surrounding mitigation strategies over the last two years, particularly within the last year given the widespread availability of vaccines, the known low risk presented to all children, who have been mandated to adhere to the strictest policies…in blue states.  The goal of this episode was to discuss the disruptions this pandemic has placed on people’s mental well-being and to provide scientific facts to reassure those who may still be fearful as mitigation measures begin to relax, and indeed, to emphasize the need for this process to happen both peacefully and respectfully for the sake of our kids. Dr. McBride is the creator of Urgency for Normal, which consists of a conglomerate of well-accredited doctors who are speaking up, pro-bono, to advocate for the lowest risk population effected by Covid: the kids.  Websites: https://www.urgencyofnormal.com https://www.lucymcbride.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drlucymcbride/?hl=en Twitter: https://twitter.com/drlucymcbride?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor

For Henry

In this episode, I speak in depth with Henry's mom. Henry is battling a one in a million, severe neurological disorder called Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood (AHC). Henry's AHC causes him to randomly become paralyzed, have seizures and apneas where he stops breathing for periods of time. Each episode threatens a trip to the hospital for Henry and his parents, and each episode could potentially hold life threatening consequences - an incredibly difficult and terrifying way for Henry and his parents to go through life. The astounding part about Henry's story is that they have found a treatment that would most certainly be life changing for Henry and, even more importantly, potentially life saving. The only barricade between Henry and this treatment is money. Henry's parents have been tasked with raising $3 million to develop the drug he needs, and so they started a foundation and have been doing everything possible to spread the word. Listen in to hear Mary, Henry's mom, describe in greater detail what it has been like for Henry, and where they are in the process now.  To donate and learn more about Henry and AHC go to www.forhenryahc.org or find them on instagram @forhenryahc

Heart to heart with with Nancy, 9/11 widow and mother

In this episode I sat down with dear family friend, Nancy Shea, and ask her questions about her experience in the tragedies of 9/11, now 20 years ago, when she was suddenly widowed as a mother of four children ranging in age from 14-7 years old. Nancy's husband, Joe, and his younger brother, Dan, were working together in the World Trade Center and were both murdered in 9/11. Listen as Nancy shares not only the events that occurred that terrible day, but also her pieces of wisdom and incredible perspective she has on life and parenting in the wake of such horror. Nancy has been a source of inspiration to many people and, now as a parent myself, I admire her more than ever.

The One About the Holidays

In this week's episode, I dive into the ration of BS surrounding the holiday season that we encounter as parents as well as the added stress of navigating family dynamics, and our ultimate goal of making the holidays special for our little ones and why we go to such great lengths. This episode topic was the winner of a contest I did on Instagram, and the listener who suggested it received a handwritten note on it in the mail from yours truly - a highly coveted prize, I know.

Mom guilt and parenting during the pandemic with Dr. Tanya Cotler

Welcome to episode three of Big Time Adulting. This episode features my first official guest on the podcast, who is uniquely qualified to provide insights on mom guilt and parenting during a pandemic. Dr. Tanya Cotler is a clinical psychologist who specializes in reproductive and maternal mental health and parent-child attachment. Being both a child and adult psychologist, she is the perfect candidate to answer my questions today.  It has been both validating and reaffirming to hear from Dr. Cotler that parenting doesn’t have to be perfect. There is no reason to feel guilty for not breastfeeding, deciding to go with an unpopular parenting style, or even having an emotional outburst in front of your child. If you’ve ever struggled with mom guilt, felt the intense pressure to become a perfect mom, or have wondered on how to support your child during this pandemic, this episode is for you. The Truth About Baby Boredom

In today's episode, I discuss the things that surprised me after having my first baby, particularly how bored I felt at home. Though so much of the experience is joyful, the picture painted for new mothers does not always match how we feel in reality once the baby arrives.  As a society we fail new moms and place unrealistic expectations they way they think they should feel from the moment they become a mom. Listen in to hear my tips and tricks for new moms on how to help combat baby boredom. Don't forget that if you're a new mom or veteran mom going through all these feelings, you're not alone. My Story

Welcome to episode two of Big Time Adulting. In this episode, I will be talking about the life-changing event that got me started into this whole journey of blogging, Instagram, and now podcasting. In December 2016, Calum, my first-born son, at the age of three, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. It was a tough time for us as a family, and sharing my experience with family, friends, and eventually, the public was a healing outlet for me. The ability to be so vulnerable and honest through my blog and Instagram was one of my most validating experiences as a parent, and allowed me to encounter so many like-minded people who shared similar sentiments as it pertained motherhood. Here we are at the next phase of my journey, and I can’t wait to share it with you all through this podcast. Connect with Caitlin Connect with me on Instagram @bigtimeadulting
