200 - Ramayana Unravelled With Ami Ganatra | Culture | Bharatvaarta
Purchase Ramayana Unravelled: http://tiny.cc/RamayanaUnravelledPurchase Mahabharata Unravelled: http://tiny.cc/MahabharataUnravelled
No epic has moved the consciousness of millions like the Ramayana. The appeal of the story of Rama is such that it has inspired the imagination of countless storytellers over the centuries, across the length and breadth of the subcontinent. From Jain poets to Bhavabhuti, from Kamban to Goswami Tulsidas, many have retold the Ramayana in their own language, infusing their own unique flavour.
Though the story of Rama is much loved and well-known, questions prevail. Ramayana Unravelled attempts to address some key concerns: How did his childhood and youth shape Rama? Why did Rama agree to go on vanvas – was it only to obey his father or was there more to it? How was the relationship of Rama and Seeta? Is the Ramayana inherently misogynist, considering the characterisation of Seeta, Shurpanakha, Kaikeyi and Tara? What led to the downfall of Ravan? Ami Ganatra takes the reader through the events of the Ramayana, resolving conundrums and underlining the reasons the epic continues to be cherished to this day.
Ami Ganatra is an alumna of Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA). A management professional, she is also a devout yoga practitioner, a certified yoga instructor, and a student of Sanskrit and Indian knowledge systems. Her books Mahabharata Unravelled and the new one, Ramayana Unravelled, are not retellings or imaginations, but an attempt to go back to the original itihasa and present the story, learnings and nuances for what they are, and make the epics accessible to all.

199 - Kautilyanomics With Sriram Balasubramanian | Culture | Bharatvaarta
Pre-order Kautilyanomics - https://amzn.eu/d/d3urRWJ
India was an economic power to reckon with until its economic decline in the 18th century. What explains this long period of prosperity? The answer might lie in a framework of social and economic thought that lies buried in our ancient heritage, says Sriram Balasubramanian, of which Kautilya's Arthashastra is a major example.
Kautilyanomics for Modern Times seeks to do three things-first, to provide a structure and a context for Kautilya's economic thoughts; second, to examine his work's relevance today; and third, to do it in a way that a lay reader can follow and grasp easily. Kautilya's thought is mainly articulated through the prism of dharmic capitalism and its components-some examples include his views on global economic outlook, state-market dynamics, and sustainable growth through observance of environmental, societal and familial responsibilities.
Fathoming India's rich economic and philosophical heritage and making use of it, Balasubramanian argues, would prove to be a great asset in India's/the country's/the nation's ascent again.
In this special episode of the Bharatvaarta podcast, we invited the author Sriram Balasubramanian to speak about his newest book, Kautilyanomics for Modern Times.

198 - The Great Tribal Warriors Of Bharat | Tuhin Sinha | Ambalika | Vivek Khaitan | Bharatvaarta
In fact, tribal mutinies against the British began at least 75 yearsbefore the 1857 revolution. These battles were fought with traditional bows andarrows and spears, and predated the reported political movement that came tothe fore in the latter part of the nineteenth century.
we complete 75 years ofIndependence, it is only fair to acknowledge that a parallel freedom movementhad existed in our far-flung villages and jungles, away from the mainstreamfreedom movement acknowledged in the books of history.
The Great Tribal Warriors of Bharat is a humble attempt to honour these largely unsung heroes of an epochal movement, whose contribution remains largely unacknowledged. The book begins with Tilka Manjhi, who unleashed guerilla warfare to combat the British, and includes Jaipal Singh Munda, one of the most nuanced speakers of our Constituent Assembly, tracking the trajectory of this movement. These brave warriors came from all parts of India, including the Northeast and the South, and from all tribes existing in the country. The book is a rare collection and a journey into self-discovery for our civilization turned nation.
To speak about their latest book, we invited Tuhin A. Sinha and Ambalika. In this episode, they tackled topics such as connotations of the term Adivasi, the issues faced by the tribal freedom fighters, the state of tribals post independence, and more.

With a GDP of $3.1 trillion, India is the world's sixth-largest economy. India's GDP will likely grow by 8-8.5% in FY22, according to the 2021-22 Economic Survey. The country's large spatially diversified economy, which is not dependent on a few products, commodities, or natural resources, has further added strength to it. 196 - Pasmanda Movement In India | Faiyaz Ahmad Fyzie | Sharan Setty | Bharatvaarta
Muslims in India are broadly categorised into three social groupings — Ashraf (the 'noble' or 'honourable ones'), Ajlaf (backward Muslims) and Arzal (Dalit Muslims). ‘Pasmanda’, a Persian word, means the ‘ones left behind’, and is used to describe depressed classes among the Muslims, while underlining their deliberate or conscious exclusion. Ashraf are seen as the traditionally dominant social group. Scholars believe that this group comprises families that can either trace their lineage to Muslim conquerors or were upper caste Hindus that converted to Islam very early on.
Ajlaf and Arzal are collectively known as the Pasmanda -- a Persian word meaning “left behind”. It is a term used for Other Backward Class (OBC) Muslims comprising economically and socially backward members of the community. Leaders of Pasmanda Muslims claim that nearly 85% of the Muslim population in India is Pasmanda while the remaining are 'Ashrafs'. They claim that out of the roughly 400 Muslims elected in the first 14 Lok Sabhas, only 60 were from Pasmanda background.
To speak about this topic, we invited Faiyaz Ahmad Fyzie. Faiyaz Ahmad Fyzie is an socio-pasmanda Activist & medical doctor by profession. He is also an author, translator and a columnist speaking on issues faced by the Pasmanda community in India.

192 - Delivering Social Welfare At The Last Mile | Aniket Doegar | #LongIndia | Bharatvaarta
Last mile delivery is one of the biggest problems of India. Due to the scale of required operations, the last mile is usually close to unreachable with the resources that the government has. This is where companies like Haqdarshak come in. They provide an agent-based welfare scheme linkage at the last mile. By using assisted tech and linking schemes to those who need it, they make sure that the social welfare programmes reach to those who need it the most.
Today we have guest Aniket Doegar, the Co-Founder & CEO, Haqdarshak, an organization using tech to ensure last mile delivery of social welfare schemes. He was also featured in Forbes 30 under 30 Asia and is a graduate from Stanford University School of Business.

188 - End Of The Dollar As A Reserve Currency | Mohal Joshi | Nirav Kanodra | Policy | Bharatvaarta
The US is currently the world's defacto global reserve currency, and is used for trading between most nations. It began with the Bretton Woods system established after World War 2, wherein a group of 44 nations agreed to peg their currencies to the USD, and the US would peg the USD to gold. However, due to spending in the vietnam war, the USD lost a lot of it's value in the early 1960s and was seen as overvalued. This led to a run on its gold reserves, which then prompted President Nixon to declare a suspension of the Bretton Woods system and then replace it with a freely floating fiat currency system.
In this episode we have guests Mohal Joshi and Nirav Kanodra. Mohal Joshi is a columnist and podcaster with the India Rising Podcast. He is interested in geopolitics, defense, politics, and macroeconomics. Nirav Kanodra is an investment banker based out of Singapore with extensive experience in sales and trading. 187 - Finland's Path To NATO Membership | Alexander Stubb | Velina's Talk
With Europe's changing security landscape, several parties in the continent are favoring NATO membership. Both Finland and Sweden stayed out of NATO during the Cold War, maintaining a neutral stance throughout the period. However, Russia's annexation of Crimea, its ongoing invasion of Ukraine and routine violations of airspace by Russian forces has prompted the non-aligned nations to rethink their security policies and consider a NATO membership.
Cai-Göran Alexander Stubb is a Finnish politician who served as the Prime Minister of Finland from 2014 to 2015. He rose to politics as a researcher specialized in the affairs of the European Union and was elected to the European Parliament in 2004 as a member of the National Coalition Party. In 2008, Stubb was appointed as Minister for Foreign Affairs following a scandal surrounding his predecessor, Ilkka Kanerva. In 2011 Stubb stood for election to the Finnish Parliament for the first time and was elected MP with the second highest vote count in the election, which led to Stubb becoming the Minister for Europe and Foreign Trade in Jyrki Katainen's cabinet.

186 - The Zafarnama Translated | Vijay Chattur | Ami Ganatra | Culture
The Zafarnāma was a spiritual victory letter sent by Guru Gobind Singh in 1705 to the Mughal Emperor of India, Aurangzeb, after the Battle of Chamkaur. The letter is written in Persian and verse. The version currently in circulation found in the Dasam Granth, the compilation of Guru Gobind Singh’s poetry, is in Gurmukhi script and Persian verse. Guru Gobind Singh sent 5 Singhs including Daya Singh, Dharam Singh and Sambhal Singh with the help of Naib Subedar Haji Sardar Shah to deliver the Zafarnama to Emperor Aurangzeb in Ahmednagar in 1707.
In this letter, Guru Gobind Singh reminds Aurangzeb how he and his soldiers had broken their oaths sworn upon the Qur'an when they promised safe passage to the Guru but launched a hidden attack of an army described as much larger, on forty famished Sikh soldiers. He tells Aurangzeb this was not a battle, it was a slaughter. As such, in spite of losing most of his Sikhs in this attack, he had won a moral victory over the Emperor who had broken his vows to Allah. He also states that despite sending a huge army to capture or kill the Guru, the Mughal forces did not succeed in their mission.
This historic poem was translated in Hindi verse for the first time in 300+ years by Veteran Wing Commander Vijay Chattur. To speak more about this piece of Indian culture, Ami Ganatra explores his view on the text and more.

185 - Indian Space Exploration | Koushik Vishwanathan | Aloke Kumar | Policy | Bharatvaarta
The ISRO human space program began as the Indian Human spaceflight programme in 2007. This began the development of technology needed to launch crewed orbital spacecraft into low earth orbit. In 2018, the government approved a further $1.5bn for a 7 day crewed flight. Now known as the Gaganyaan programme, the programme aims to send two unmanned missions and one manned flight mission into low earth orbit by 2023. PM Modi launched the Indian Space Association (ISpA) in late 2021 as a way to contribute towards the accelerated development of India's space industry. Speaking on the occasion, the PM said that this undertaking will give the India space sector "new wings". It removes the restrictions on space access, previously only given to ISRO and a select few institutions. ISpA aspires to be the collective voice of the Indian Space industry. In the light of these advancements and India's new found enthusiasm for the space race, we decided to dive deep into Indian space exploration. To shed some light on this exhaustive subject, we invited guests Aloke Kumar and Koushik Vishwanathan. Aloke Kumar is the Associate Professor at the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore. He has also worked in many teams exploring applications of science to make space exploration easier. Koushik Vishwanathan is also an assistant professor at IISc, with an interest in advanced manufacturing and finishing processes. For decades, nuclear weapons have been largely peripheral to U.S.-China relations, but the nuclear relationship is now growing more competitive as both countries pursue major programs to modernize their forces. China’s efforts to strengthen its relatively small nuclear arsenal seem largely oriented toward improving survivability and do not appear to constitute a shift away from the country’s long-standing No First Use (NFU) policy. Nevertheless, the improvements are provoking anxiety in Washington, which has long resisted acknowledging a state of mutual nuclear vulnerability with China. David Santoro is the President and CEO of The Pacific Forum and a published author. His latest work, 'US-China Nuclear Relations: The Importance Of Strategic Triangles', handles the sensitive matter of regulation concerning nuclear weapons.

179 - Leading India Through The COVID-19 Crisis | Priyam Gandhi-Mody | Policy | Bharatvaarta
The pandemic has altered the destinies of not just people worldwide but of entire nations. Many developed countries despite having superior infrastructure and significant investments in public health haven’t been able to tackle the onslaught of the pandemic. It was in this backdrop that India’s ability to rise to the challenge had been written off entirely by many leading ‘experts’. Doomsday predictions were made which included mass deaths and anarchy. However, Prime Minister Modi’s robust grip on the administration changed India’s fortunes in the fight against the virus. He took absolute control of the country’s response mechanisms and streamlined systems to cut red-tape. Led by fact-based scientific advice, the Indian government galvanized their inheritance of less-than-adequate resources, augmented capacities rapidly and prudently spent its reserves on the most effective solutions. Hence, even after three waves of the pandemic, India has managed to save more lives than most countries in the world. The country has proved the cynics wrong with one of the lowest fatality rates. As a testament to its scientific and technological prowess, the nation has not only developed multiple indigenous vaccines but is running the world’s largest vaccination drive supported by superb infrastructure. True to our nature as a nurturer, our country has been acting as the ‘pharmacy of the world’ by providing life-saving drugs and medical equipment to other nations. With a staunch resolve to help all of humanity emerge out of the pandemic, India has committed over five billion vaccine doses in 2022 for countries in need and intends to provide more until every human being is secure. A Nation to Protect is a definitive account of India’s pandemic response from the top echelons of leadership and government.

178 - Exploring The Creation Of The Indian Bridge Management System With Vaibhav Dange | Policy
The Indian Bridge Management System is one of the most advanced public infrastructure databases in the world. The IBMS creates an inventory of all bridges in the country and rates their structural condition so that timely repair and rehabilitation work can be carried out based on the criticality of the structure. It is the largest platform in the world owned by a single owner, with a database that could exceed 1,50,000 bridge structures. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has inventorized 1,72,517 bridges/structures under this initiative. Under the system, bridges are given a structural rating number; based on its structure; and a socio-economic rating number which measures its importance in relation to it's vicinity. With an MBA degree under his belt, Vaibhav Dange devoted his knowledge in management to implementing processes in ensuring speedy redressal of issues in all spheres of activity. From 2014 to 2019, he was the Private Secretary to the Hon'ble Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, and was very closely associated with all development works related to the national highways. During this tenure, he got involved in the IBMS project, and his deep knowledge and insight resulted in many innovations within the IBMS. He is associated with various infrastructure projects undertaken by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

177 - India's Path to a Hydrogen-Fuelled Future? | Rajat Seksaria | Bharatvaarta | Policy
India unveiled its first National Hydrogen Policy in January this year with an aim to boost production and use of cleaner sources of energy. The 2021-22 budget allocated Rs. 1500 crore for renewable energy development. Issues faced with current systems include high AT&C losses, inefficient distribution, and billing, The plan will focus on generation of hydrogen from green power resources and on linking India’s growing renewable capacity with the hydrogen economy. It will also effectively integrate renewable energy in the present energy mix. This will be done by scaling up the gas pipeline infrastructure across the country and introducing smart grids. Green hydrogen (GH) producers are to be exempt for 25 years from paying inter-state transmission charges. Bulk consumers will now also be exempted from paying ISTC till 2045. The MOP policy assures GH producers open access to renewable energy generators anywhere in the national grid. Currently, all of India’s hydrogen, about 6 million tonnes annually, is gray. By 2050, nearly 80% of India’s hydrogen is projected to be ‘green’. To speak about this emerging topic, we have Rajat Seksaria, CEO at Acme Solar which is among the largest Renewables company in India. In this episode, he speaks about topics such as additions that can be made to the national hydrogen policy, pros and cons of hydrogen as a fuel, how the hydrogen policy fits within India's push towards green energy, and more.

176 - Russia's War Against Ukraine | Bruno Maçães | Velina Tchakarova | Velina's Talk
In March and April 2021, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the Russian military to begin massing thousands of military personnel and equipment near its border with Ukraine and in Crimea, representing the largest mobilization since the illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014. This precipitated an international crisis and generated concerns over a potential invasion. Satellite imagery showed movements of armour, missiles, and heavy weaponry. The troops were partially removed by June. The crisis was renewed in October and November 2021, when over 100,000 Russian troops were again massed surrounding Ukraine on three sides by December. The ongoing crisis stems from the protracted Russo-Ukrainian War that began in early 2014. In December 2021, Russia advanced two draft treaties that contained requests for what it referred to as "security guarantees", including a legally binding promise that Ukraine would not join the NATO as well as a reduction in NATO troops and military hardware stationed in Eastern Europe, and threatened unspecified military response if those demands were not met in full. NATO has rejected these requests, and the United States warned Russia of "swift and severe" economic sanctions should it further invade Ukraine. Bruno Maçães is a Portuguese politician, consultant and author. He is a nonresident senior fellow at the Hudson Institute. He is a former Secretary of State for European Affairs in Portugal. In this livestream, he will speak on the Russo-Ukraine crisis and more.

173 - India And The Central Asian Republics With Rashmini Koparkar | Bharatvaarta | Policy
India's ties with Central Asia can be traced back to the ancient Silk Road, along which goods, people, and ideas flowed. Under the Modi government, there is a renewed effort to reconnect India with the region. During a recent summit, India expressed a need to boost its ties with all five central Asian nations – Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The five Presidents also decided to set up a joint working group on Afghanistan. PM Modi outlined 3 focus areas for India's relationship with the central asian republics. Central Asia is central to India's vision of an integrated and stable extended neighborhood and cooperation for regional security and prosperity. Second is to establish a framework of regular interactions, and third is to create an ambitious roadmap for future cooperation. China has aggressively wooed the CARs through its Belt and Road Initiative to make their dream of a new and improved Silk Road a reality. Chinese anxiety to consolidate its links with CARs and disallow India from taking any initiative in the region is shown by its haste to hold a summit with the leaders of Central Asian countries. On the other hand trade between India and Central Asia lies at a insignificant $2 billion compared to Chinese trade with the CARs, which roughly amounts to $100 billion. India could increase bilateral trade through energy requirements. CARs are rich in resources such as oil, natural gas, and uranium. Giving us the insights on this complex geopolitical situation, we have Rashmini Koparkar, an assistant professor at JNU and an avid follower of central Asian politics. She is a student of International Relations, especially those pertaining to Central Asia & Eurasia. She is also passionate about Indian history, politics, and society. In this episode, she speaks about topics such as the history of India with central Asian republics, North-South corridor, the power of Russia, USA, and China in the region, the role of Afghanistan in relations going forward, and more.

172 - A Look Through Indian History In Conversation With Dr. Vikram Sampath | Culture | Bharatvaarta
Vikram Sampath is an esteemed historian and the author of five acclaimed books: Splendours of Royal Mysore, a biography of Gauhar Jaan, S Balachander, and a two-volume biography of Savarkar. In 2021, Sampath was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He is a former senior fellow at the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, and has many many more achievements under his belt. Welcome to the podcast. As the intellectual fountainhead of the ideology of Hindutva, which is in political ascendancy in India today, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar is undoubtedly one of the most contentious political thinkers and leaders of the twentieth century. Accounts of his eventful and stormy life have oscillated from eulogizing hagiographies to disparaging demonization. The truth, as always, lies somewhere in between and has unfortunately never been brought to light. Savarkar and his ideology stood as one of the strongest and most virulent opponents of Gandhi, his pacifist philosophy and the Indian National Congress. Dr. Sampath has written a two-part biography on this unseen hero of the Indian independence movement; the focus of this conversation. In this episode, our hosts Roshan Cariappa and Amit Paranjape bring up topics of Savarkar as a successor to Lokmanya Tilak, the relation between Subhash Chandra Bose and Savarkar, and his forward-looking thoughts on geopolitics and foreign relations. They also spoke about history as an art; whether there is such a thing as objective history and how we should look at idolized historical figures. This episode is sure to be a treat for history buffs and fans of Dr. Sampath alike. Viewers can also find this this episode on all audio platforms.

It is the cradle of the ancient Indus-Saraswati civilization, with the sacred river Saraswati, glorified in the Rig Veda, flowing in its full might across the plains and onward. Kings and emperors used this place to expand and consolidate their empires. The East India Company, and later the British Crown, played their games here, manipulating and managing their colonial affairs. The much-ridiculed ‘Aaya Ram, Gaya Ram’ political epithet originated here. This land gave the nation a number of stalwarts of the Independence movement. And, it became the address for a cocktail of regional and national political manoeuvrings, impacting national politics in major ways. In his debut book, Land of the Gods: The Story of Haryana, Arjun Singh Kadian takes the readers through a fascinating journey of Haryana which offers new insights and delightful nuggets. His work has been described as an ambitious book that engages with a region and people who have defined the subcontinent for over five millennia. In this episode, hosted by Ami Ganatra, he tackles topics such as the medieval history of Haryana, how ancient Haryanvis led their lives in one of the most war-struck parts of India, and more. This episode is sure to be a treat for history buffs.

169 - The Future Of Semiconductors | Gaurav Goel | Arun Mampazhy | Bharatvaarta | Policy
The 2020–2022 global chip shortage is an ongoing crisis in which the demand for integrated circuits (commonly known as semiconductor chips) is greater than the supply, affecting more than 169 industries[3] and has led to major price increases, shortages and queues amongst consumers for automobiles, graphics cards, video game consoles, computers, and other products that require semiconductors.[4][5][6] Commonly cited causes for the shortage include the COVID-19 pandemic, the China–United States trade war, and various severe weather incidents. The Indian government has announced a 76,000 crore scheme to boost semiconductor and display manufacturing in the country. We're also seeing inter-country talks between India and Taiwan, with TSMC and UMC looking to set up a facility in India. Can this lead to India being the hub for semiconductors in the future? Our guests for this episode are Gaurav Goel and Arun Mampazhy. Gaurav is a micro architect with two decades of experience in the semiconductor field. He has worked with prominent companies like Intel, Synopys, and is currently working at AMD. Arun has a BTech from IIT-M and MS from University of Maryland in semiconductor fabrication and over a decade of industry experience. 165 - The Legend Of Birsa Munda | Tuhin Sinha | Bharatvaarta | Culture
Tuhin A. Sinha is an Indian author and politician. He is known for the novels Mission Shengzhan, a topic of a previous episode on Bharatvaarta, and today's topic of discussion, The Legend Of Birsa Munda; a dramatized account of one of the unsung heroes of India's independence movement. In 19th century India, deep in the heart of what is now the state of Jharkhand, the Adivasis have been leading a life of absolute misery and darkness. The colonial state, with the help of its scheming local collaborators, has cast a net of abuse and exploitation that is tightening around these Adivasis, much like a hangman’s noose does. Everything they hold dear – their land, homes, history, traditions, religion, families – has fallen victim to the grand colonial plan of building a magnificent but merciless empire for the Queen. At the heart of the rebellion against the colonials is the twenty-five-year-old Birsa Munda. He decides what must be done to save his community and leads the Adivasis in fighting back to reclaim their lives. Based on true events, this epic tale of courage is a tribute to the life of Birsa Munda, who in his very short life, mobilized the tribal community, rebelled against forced conversions, envisioned a fairer, more just society and died fighting for it. The Legend of Birsa Munda is the story of a subaltern tribal hero, whose contribution to India’s struggle for independence must never be forgotten. 164 - Will The Stock Market Crash? | Nimish Joshi | Rajeev Mantri | Bharatvaarta
Domestic equities rose to their peak levels in October on strong global cues with P/E multiples touching 31 for the Sensex. This then prompted a sell-off by foreign investors, prompting them to pull a whopping ₹13,550 crore from Indian equities during the month. Indian stocks have witnessed a heavy outflow of foreign investment - a key driver for domestic equities - over the past two months. Benchmarks like Sensex have corrected nearly 10 per cent from their record high levels. Both the Sensex and Nifty tanked about 2.5% each as concerns about risks from the rapid spread of the omicron coronavirus variant prompted selling in global equities. The Reserve Bank of India is forecast to hike its repo rate by 25 basis points in Q2 2022, its first increase in more than three years, In this episode, we have experts Nimish Joshi and Rajeev Mantri speaking about these events and more, and gauging their short, medium, and long term impact on the Indian stock market. They spoke about what actually happened in the market correction, IPO market post the underwhelming PayTM IPO, the near future outlook, the influence of macro factors on stock prices, and more.

Quo Vadis, Eurodollar System? - Jeffrey P. Snider, Emil Kalinowski, Velina Tchakarova
Eurodollars are time deposits denominated in U.S. dollars at banks outside the United States, and thus are not under the jurisdiction of the Federal Reserve. Consequently, such deposits are subject to much less regulation than similar deposits within the U.S. The term was originally coined for U.S. dollars in European banks, but it expanded over the years to its present definition. A U.S. dollar-denominated deposit in Tokyo or Beijing would be likewise deemed a Eurodollar deposit (sometimes an Asiadollar). There is no connection with the euro currency or the eurozone. The offshore locations of Eurodollar make it exposed to potential country risk and economic risk. Since the Eurodollar market is not run by any government agency its growth is hard to estimate. However, the Eurodollar market is by a wide margin the largest source of global finance. In 1997, nearly 90% of all international loans were made this way. In December 1985 the Eurodollar market was estimated by J.P. Morgan Guaranty bank to have a net size of 1.668 trillion. As Chief Investment Strategist for Alhambra Investment Partners, Jeff directs the day-to-day investment processes and spearheads the investment research efforts while providing close contact to Alhambra’s client base. Emil Kalinowski, CFA, is employed in the metals and mining industry writing about how socioeconomic and geopolitical trends affect the supply, demand, and price of base and precious metals. 160 - The Midway Battle: Modi's Rollercoaster Second Term - Gautam Chintamani (Author)
Gautam Chintamani is a film historian and the author of Rajneeti (Penguin-Random House, 2019), the first biography of Rajnath Singh. He is the author of the bestselling Dark Star: The Loneliness of Being Rajesh Khanna (HarperCollins, 2014), The Film That Revived Hindi Cinema (HarperCollins, 2016) and Pink- The Inside Story (HarperCollins, 2017).
About the Book: In 2019, the BJP came into power once again on the back of one of the most significant electoral mandates in recent years. Since then, the Narendra Modi-led government has seen a tumultuous few years as they have implemented far-reaching legislative changes including the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, triple talaq, the Citizenship (Amendment) Act as well as farming laws. These laws, when implemented, caused widespread protests and upheaval across the country. While the country grappled with internal strife, it also faced challenges from its neighbors in the form of one of the most intense military stand-offs in decades after an unprovoked attack by China’s People’s Liberation Army at Galwan as well as a global pandemic. While the Modi government took swift steps to limit the spread of the pandemic in 2020, the second wave of COVID-19 in early 2021 hit the country hard, claiming thousands of lives. Bringing a well-researched and nuanced understanding to Modi’s second term, The Midway Battle sheds light on the sociopolitical issues facing India as it continues its struggle against enemies both known and unknown, and puts into in perspective what lies ahead for the world’s biggest democracy.

154 - India's Path Towards A $5 Trillion Economy With Dr. Aruna Sharma | Policy | Bharatvaarta
India is the world’s largest and most vigorous democracy. Today’s new economic balance of power has given the country a chance to reclaim much of its earlier glory when it was one of the world’s richest civilizations. In the current context, India’s fundamentally vital indicators reflect the country’s potential as an economic powerhouse. As Indians, we have proved ourselves in almost every sphere within and outside our country. We have all the ingredients of a resilient society, backed by strong societal support but not social security, a conservative economic system which is to an extent recession-proof but not transparent, and a great talent pool but with limited opportunities for nurturing those skills. What we lack is the right approach to policy making and the development of an ecosystem to harness our immense potential. Dr Aruna Sharma is an Indian Administrative Officer of 1982 batch Madhya Pradesh Cadre retired after her work in Steel and Information Technology in government of India. She has always focused to have holistic approach and establish system in all her postings for ensuring sustainable quality outcomes. She has two books reaching the Last Beneficiary: Resource Convergence Mantra Model (2008) and Impact of Recourse Convergence in Policy Making, Program Design and Execution (2014) released by UNDP. FAO has also published her work on food security.

145 - Reporting On The Ground @ Afghanistan | Hizbullah Khan, Journalist | Velina's Talk
The Taliban were removed from power in Afghanistan by US-led forces in 2001, but the group has seized control of the country once again following a rapid offensive. The capital, Kabul, was the last major city to fall to the offensive that began months ago but accelerated as the hardline Islamists gained control of territories. The group entered direct talks with the US back in 2018, and in February 2020 the two sides struck a peace deal that committed the US to withdrawal and the Taliban to preventing attacks on US forces. Other promises included not allowing al-Qaeda or other militants to operate in areas it controlled and proceeding with national peace talks. The promise made by the Taliban - in Pashtun areas straddling Pakistan and Afghanistan - was to restore peace and security and enforce their own austere version of Sharia, or Islamic law, once in power. Having outlasted a superpower through two decades of war, the Taliban began seizing vast swathes of territory, before once again toppling a government in Kabul in the wake of a foreign power withdrawing. They swept across Afghanistan in just 10 days, taking their first provincial capital on 6 August . By 15 August, they were at the gates of Kabul.

The politics of backward caste assertion in India is undergoing a new resurgence. The possible culmination of a series of events, mostly unrelated to each other, is likely to transform Other Backward Classes (OBCs) from an administrative category to a political one. And this has the potential to irreversibly change the nature and character of Indian democracy. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s victory in 2014 (and 2019) was not just due to greater consolidation of the upper castes, but also because of the deep inroads the party made among the lower castes, especially among the lower backward castes. In this episode, our resident political expert Rohit Jayaraman speaks about the rise of OBC politics in the wake of Shri. Kalyan Singh's death. He talks about topics such as the state-wise classification of OBCs, Kalyan Singh's influence in OBC politics, his relationship with Mulayam Singh, and much more. 140 - Discussing 'The Maratha Century' with Uday Kulkarni | Bharatvaarta | Culture
The Marathas began their quest for Swarajya in 1646 under Chhatrapati Shivaji. From this year until 1818, the Marathas remained a formidable power in the Indian sub-continent. This is a story of their rise to paramountcy in the Eighteenth century – and their fall in early Nineteenth century. It was the first indigenous Empire after centuries of foreign rule…and the last before the British took over. Dr. Uday Kulkarni is an author of 6 excellent books on 18th century Maratha history. He is an AFMC, Pune graduate and a retired navy surgeon. Dr Kulkarni started writing about Maratha history a decade back, while still practicing medicine. His first book Solstice at Panipat, describing the 1761 Panipat War, released in 2011 on 250th anniversary of what perhaps is the most significant war in Indian history. He followed it with Bakhar of Panipat (2014), The Era of Baji Rao (2016) and James Wales: Artist & Antiquarian in the time of Peshwa Sawai Madhavrao (2019). The Maratha Century is the latest in his series of books on Maratha history. In this discussion, we talk to Dr Kulkarni about this book, his passion for writing about Maratha history and the very intriguing 18th century India. He talks about how the impact of Chhatrapathi Shivaji, his campaign on Surat, Aurangazeb's 25-year war with the Marathas, and more. Amit Paranjape, the anchor for this conversation, is a Pune-based history buff and technology entrepreneur. 139 - Understanding China - A Geopolitical Perspective | Shri Vijay Gokhale | Bharatvaarta | Policy
More than three decades later, the Tiananmen Square incident refuses to be forgotten. The events that occurred in the summer of 1989 would not only set the course for China's politics but would also re-define its relationship with the world. China's message was clear: it remained committed to market-oriented reform, but it would not tolerate any challenge to the supremacy of the Chinese Communist Party. In return for economic prosperity, the Chinese have surrendered some rights to the state. A democratic future seems far away. Vijay Gokhale, then a young diplomat serving in Beijing, was a witness to the drama that unfolded in Tiananmen Square. This unique account brings an Indian perspective on an event in China's history that the Chinese government has been eager to have the world forget. India's relations with the People's Republic of China have captured the popular imagination ever since the 1950s but have rarely merited a detailed understanding of the issues. Individual episodes tend to arouse lively debate, which often dissipates without a deeper exploration of the factors that shaped the outcomes. Mr. Gokhale's book 'The Long Game' explores the dynamics of negotiation between the two countries, from the early years after Independence until the current times, through the prism of six historical and recent events in the India-China relationship.

Millennia have passed since the dharma yudhha of the cousins shook the land of Bharata. But this history of our ancestors continues to fascinate us. Even today, we have passionate discussions about the people and their actions in the epic, fervidly defending our favourites and denouncing others. The number of works on the Mahabharata-adaptations, retellings and fiction-that still get written is a testimony to its enduring relevance. While the general storyline is largely known, a lot of questions and myths prevail, such as-What was the geographical extent of the war? Did Drona actually refuse to take on Karna as his disciple? What were Draupadi's responsibilities as the queen of Indraprastha? Did she ever mock Duryodhana? Were the women in the time of the Mahabharata meek and submissive? What were the names of the war formations during the time? What role did the sons of the Pandavas play? Does the south of India feature at all in the Mahabharata? What happened after the war? These and many other intriguing questions continue to mystify the contemporary reader. Author Ami Ganatra debunks myths, quashes popular notions and offers insights into such aspects not commonly known or erroneously known, based solely on facts as narrated in Vyasa's Mahabharata from generally accepted authentic sources. For a history of such prominence and influence as the Mahabharata, it is important to get the story right. So pick this book up, sit back and unveil the lesser-known facts and truths about the great epic.

124 - Decoding Indian Bureaucracy With Avinash Dharmadikari | Policy | Bharatvaarta
India bureaucracy is quite unique in its structure, in that it was created by the British for their administrative needs and in independent India, the systems and the processes have been gradually adjusted to align with evolving demands of statecraft. Yet there is a feeling that these changes are neither fast enough nor adequate. We discussed these issues with Shri Avinash Dharmadhikari. Shri Dharmadhikari was a freelance journalist and a social activist before writing the UPSC and entering the Indian Administrative Service. He was in the IAS for 10 years, rising to the position of working in the Maharashtra CM Office. He quit the service then and started Chankaya Mandal Parivar. Chanakya Mandal focuses on coaching the UPSC aspirants and preparing them not just in terms of content but also personal qualities for the services. Over the years, Shri Dharmadhikari has coached and mentored thousands of youngsters and he is a household name in the UPSC preparation circles, especially in Pune and Maharashtra. In this episode, Shri Dharmadhikari shared his views on how the IAS needs to change, how the UPSC exam itself needs to evolve, the role of lateral entry and several other challenges to the UPSC model. His candid and forthcoming views on enforcing greater accountability for the bureaucracy are thought provoking. Shri Dharmadhikari also talked about the generalization vs specialization debate.

#107 - The Life and Times of Shri. Manohar Parrikar | Nitin Gokhale
Manohar Parrikar was India's first IIT-qualified Chief Minister. But that description doesn't capture even a fraction of his achievements. He used his natural brilliance to serve the country, first as a committed grass-roots volunteer, then as four-time popular Chief Minister of Goa and finally contributed to strengthening India's national security as Defence Minister between November 2014 and March 2017. Nitin Gokhale, one of South Asia's leading strategic and defence analysts, became acquainted with Parrikar quite by accident during the latter's stint in New Delhi, but by sheer coincidence the two became very close friends. This book is as much a personal tribute by the author to his friend, as an honest attempt to capture the persona of Parrikar the man,the politician and patriot. Through the eyes of his family, friends and countless admirers the book dwells deep into his early influences, his journey from a small village in Goa to one of the highest posts in the country.

Kerala is scheduled to go to the polls in May. Politically, it has largely been bi-polar, with power alternating between the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front and the Congress led United Democratic Front. While the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF government has praised for having delivered welfare schemes efficiently during the Kerala Floods of 2018, it’s recent mishandling of the COVID pandemic and also the spate of scams has cast a shadow on its performance. In the UDF, the Congress’ decline politically has mirrored the rise of the Muslim League who are now a more assertive ally, causing tensions between various allied demographics.
The Kerala Congress (Mani) split, with K M Mani's son Jose K Mani, allying with the LDF has made matters grave. Meanwhile, the BJP has seen a groundswell of support in recent times led by Prime Minister Modi’s own popularity; he has inaugurated multiple infrastructure projects in the State, recently, including the 2,000-MW Pugalur-Thrissur high voltage direct current (HVDC) power transmission corridor.
On this episode, we are joined by political experts and commentators, Ananth Krishna Subhalakshmy and Rohit Jayaraman for a deep dive analysis of what factors could influence the results of this upcoming election. #083 - "Vajpayee: The Years That Changed India" - Shakti Sinha | Rajeev Mantri
Former prime minister of India and member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Atal Bihari Vajpayee was an understated and a singular politician of the kind rarely seen in contemporary times. His patriotism was uncompromising, forged out of the paradoxes of his life: The sensitive poet who summoned nerves of Steel to conduct the Pokhran-ii nuclear tests; the man from humble beginnings who envisioned a project as Titanic as the Golden quadrilateral highway network. Devoid of any political pedigree or patronage, he harnessed his diplomatic acumen to transform India's relations with the United States, which had long been mired in misunderstandings rooted in the Cold War. His calculated decisions led to key strategic and economic policy achievements. in this book, Shakti Sinha, a close Associate of Vajpayee, helps us understand Vajpayee as a decision-maker.
The narrative focuses on the political challenges Vajpayee faced, and on his key initiatives in the strategic and economic fields during his first Term as prime Minister, which have had a lasting impact. 'Vajpayee' fleshes out not only Vajpayee's political philosophy but also provides an insider's account of how the former PM thought and worked.
In this episode, we will be discussing the book "Vajpayee: The Years That Changed India" with the author, Shakti Sinha. This episode will be hosted by Srivatsa Subbanna and Rajeev Mantri and will also include an audience Q&A.

#077 - Was ABV India's Most Underrated PM? | Aashish Chandorkar, Rajeev Mantri
Atal Bihari Vajpayee (25 December 1924 – 16 August 2018) was an Indian statesman who served three terms as the Prime Minister of India, first for a term of 13 days in 1996, then for a period of 13 months from 1998 to 1999, followed by a full term from 1999 to 2004. A member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he was the first Indian prime minister not of the Indian National Congress to serve a full term in office. He was also noted as a poet and a writer. He was a member of the Indian Parliament for over five decades, having been elected ten times to the Lok Sabha, the lower house, and twice to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house.
He served as the Member of Parliament for Lucknow, retiring from active politics in 2009. He was among the founding members of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS), of which he was president from 1968 to 1972. The BJS merged with several other parties to form the Janata Party, which won the 1977 general election. In March 1977, Vajpayee became the Minister of External Affairs in the cabinet of Prime Minister Morarji Desai.
He resigned in 1979, and the Janata alliance collapsed soon after. Former members of the BJS formed the BJP in 1980, with Vajpayee its first president. During his tenure as prime minister, India carried out the Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998. Vajpayee sought to improve diplomatic relations with Pakistan, travelling to Lahore by bus to meet with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
After the 1999 Kargil War with Pakistan, he sought to restore relations through engagement with President Pervez Musharraf, inviting him to India for a summit at Agra. The administration of Narendra Modi declared in 2014 that Vajpayee's birthday, 25 December, would be marked as Good Governance Day. In 2015, he was conferred India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, by the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee. He died on 16 August 2018 of age-related illness.
