Regular verbs in the past tense: explanation and breakdown
If you've listened to previous episodes you may have heard me mention that there are really 4 core tenses that the majority of people need in a business context; the present, the future, the past and the present perfect. If you have a good command of these ones, that will serve you well in many business interactions.I've found personally that many people are more comfortable with the future and present tenses but generally weaker with the past and present perfect. I'd like to start to work on this with you in today's episode. We are going to start with regular verbs in the past tense. In the future I will pick up other areas such as irregular verbs.Enjoy!SIGN UP TODAY TO THE ANNA WITH 2NS NEWSLETTER - Sign up before 10.00am 9th June 2023 to get the one for this episode. Tense mistakes students make ALL THE TIME and how to avoid them
I know core tenses isn't as sexy as business expressions but it is arguably much more important. Making mistakes with core tenses (present, past, future, present perfect) is a more serious mistake than for example missing an S on your plural or using an ininstead of an on preposition. I spend a lot of my time working with my students on these core tenses so that there are perfect. If you have a great command of these core tenses you can be confident working in a business environment in English. Remember that the first step is to be aware that you're making a mistake and then you can correct it. A coach should identify your mistakes and help you along the way to improving them. How I learnt a language from zero
Recently a lot of you have asked me about how I've learnt Spanish. After living in Spain for nearly 4 years now I think it's actually a good point to look back and share what things I've done to get where I am now. When I came to Spain at 26 I basically spoke NO Spanish. I'd been taught Spanish at secondary school but had forgotten absolutely everything. After doing a very basic beginners course arrived in Madrid and I didn't understand ANYTHING.I'm going to tell you how I've managed to get to where I'm at now, some little strategies that worked well for me but also the REAL picture of what it's been like - warts and all! I hope you can take something away from it or just have a giggle relating to the struggles of learning a language! Even though you might be learning a different language than me, the struggles are the same - getting the grammar right, understanding people, having the confidence to speak etc. Enjoy!ANNA WITH 2NS PODCAST - Business English every WednesdaySign up to my newsletter to to get exclusive content from the podcast and be the first to hear about my courseGet more of my business English content on my InstagramListen to me as a co-host on Culips English Chatterbox showDonate and support me and my content

17 very handy business English acronyms and how to use them in real life
Acronyms are a business person's best friend. They save us time so that we don't have to say all the tricky words, which can be handy from an English learner point of view.We use them in writing and also in speaking however there are two important things to take into account. 1) Is the acronym spoken? Not always. 2) How do we say the acronym? Sometimes we say it together and sometimes we say the letters individually. There are also rather frequent mistakes to avoid that are common for Spanish speakers.I go through a selection of the most common business acronyms and answer those two questions for you. Here are the main ones we are going to talk about so that you can follow:ASAP, KPI, FYI, COB/COP, EOD, ETA, WFH, SEO, CEO, CFO, COO, CMO, CTO, ROI, NGO, SWOT.I hope it's useful! 4 business phrasal verbs with "down" you might not know
On my Instagram you voted for the next episode to be about phrasal verbsIn this episode I have chosen 4 business phrasal verbs that use the preposition "down". The preposition down can mean a few things but one the main categories is to reduce. Remember we can sometimes find logic in the phrasal verb by looking at the preposition. So, here are the 4 we are going to look at:To tone down - reducir el tonoTo whittle down - reducirTo play down - restar importancia aTo put something down to - atribuirI hope that you find this useful. What I would say really say...tasks and workload
Bored of saying "I'm busy" when someone asks you how work is going? This episode is for you. I always warm up at the beginning of any sessions by asking the question "What have you got going on this week?" or "Tell me what your week is like." I like to do this because immediately it's get the person focused on telling me about a very common thing we talk about at work which is our schedule and workload. The majority of them will answer something like "really busy", "very busy", or "busy as usual" and it got me thinking, why not different options to spice it up a bit? To spice something up is to make it a bit more interesting. In this episode I tell you about some natural responses and answers to having:A lot of workNot a lot of workAn easy taskA difficult taskEnjoy! How a poker theory can help you understand your improvement in English
Last year a colleague gave me a book called The Mental Game of Poker by Jared Tender (Thank you, Juan!). I thought, but I don't need to know anything about poker...?Anyway, I gave it a read and found it really eye-opening in terms of the way to look at improving a skill, such as speaking another language.I'm going to share with you the part that really resonated with me and helped me understand why I ask myself "Why do I feel like I'm not making any progress? I've been speaking Spanish for 4 years and I some days I feel like I've never spoken a word before"The ideas in this book gave me some perspective on that. I've shared it with my students and now I want to share it with you too.Enjoy! ANNA WITH 2NS PODCAST. Business phrases dump part 1
What is a dump? Funny word actually. It can mean where you put rubbish i.e a rubbish dump. It's also a synonym for poo (Nice, I know!) If you've spent any time on Instagram recently you likely have also seen the expression "photo dump".A 'photo dump' is a post which features multiple pictures. Over the past year, you've probably noticed more and more of them on your feed. You might even have posted a few yourself.I'm going to take that concept and apply it to business idioms. Here are the first round of 10 exceptionally useful English business idiooms. In part 1 we are going to look at 7 business idiomas for Communication. To touch baseTo be in the loopTo be out of the loopTo loop me inGive me a shoutGive me a heads-upWhy are they useful?"I'm in a meeting but I don't understand anything anyone says.""They said something like "cuiberferifjfueeib" and I had no clue!"As I've always said, idiomas and expressions are for generally more for understanding rather than using. Learn these ones and you know what people mean when they are talking to you and as a more advanced step, include them in your vocabulary.ANNA WITH 2NS PODCAST. How to...ask a great indirect question in a meeting with confidence
Soo many of my students tell me they are SO SCARED to ask questions in meetings. They sit there wanting to ask a question in English but instead of doing it they stay silent and send email afterwards!Let's try and break that cycle today and look at how to ask indirect questions in a meeting. Why indirect questions? Well, because we use these a lot in formal meetings when we want more information but want to ask in a polite and professional. However, there are are some REALLY IMPORTANT rules to follow because they do not have the same structure as direct questions. We are going to talk about these 5 indirect questions:Do you have any idea…Do you know…I was wondering…I’d like to know…Could you tell me…ANNA WITH 2NS PODCAST. Talking about...using 3rd conditional in a business context
The 3rd conditional. The worst of them all! The one everybody loves to hate. Well, that's try and change that. See the conditionals as a way to express yourself at a higher level. If you stop and notice, we use the conditionals a lot, including at work. When we are talking about what we would have done differently, what we could have done if we had more time or more budget and how we are going to use this learning in future work and projects. In this episode I introduce the conditional and go through an example. Here is the text and the sentences I use in the podcast. This is a more difficult one so you might need help to follow it. TextSony launched its cassette recording device known as Betamax in the mid 1970s. It lost the battle for market share to JVC’s VHS technology because other products were cheaper, but Sony didn’t stop making Betamax tapes until 2016, long after it was relevant to most of us, who didn’t even realize it was still in production.SentencesIf we'd had time, we would have been able to do it.si hubiéramos tenido tiempo habríamos sido capaces de hacerloIf Sony had stopped making tapes sooner, they would've saved moneyIf Sony had had better marketing, they would've sold moreIf Sony hadn’t lost market share, they would've been more successfulIf Sony’s products had been cheaper, they would've sold moreANNA WITH 2NS PODCAST. Interviews in English for non-native speakers with Nigel Job from The Interview Specialist
Wow, it has been one year since I started this podcast. As they say, time flies when you are having fun. To mark this milestone I'm bringing you a special episode with a very special guest. I asked you last year what things you wanted me to talk about. Time and time again people would ask me about Interviews in English. "What should I say" "What should I do?" "How can I stop being so nervous?" Join me and Nigel, an international interview expert, as he gives some great fantastic tips but also a fresh perspective on the interview experience for non-native speakers of English. Nigel was a wonderful guest and I hope you take away something useful that you can use in interviews in the future. By the way - the episode was recorded in November 2020 which is why we make reference to "this year" meaning 2020. How to....use the phrasal verb "break down"
Break down is a beautiful and fascinating phrasal verb that has multiple meanings and I wanted to share it with you. I've been looking at this phrasal verb recently in my classes and it gave me the inspiration. Some of the meanings are very common and useful at work too. I like to teach you things that are unusual and interesting but also those where you are going to have a high ROI. Meaning if you learn them it will be worth your time and effort because we use them a lot every day.I break down (excuse the pun!) the phrasal verb into meanings and give clear examples that you can go off and use in your conversations at home and at work.I hope you enjoy this episode. Talking about...the present perfect continuos
This one tense that a lot of Spanish speakers don't use or make a lot of mistakes with. Recently, I've been correcting this a lot so I thought it was worth dedicating a bit of time to it.It makes sense because in Spanish you would say "Llevo tres años viviendo aquí" and in English we say "I've been living in Madrid for 3 years" (Cue brain explode emoji)in this episode I cover the main mistakes to avoid and ways that you can tell if you need to use this tense or not. I also cover how we can measure time with this tense using For and Since which is another sticking point for students. In short, this is an area where people make A LOT of mistakes so it's worth your time to check it out. What I would really say: personalities
"What is the most common way to say it?", "Do you really use this word?", What would you really say?" - These are vocabulary questions I get asked about a lot by students, so I thought I would do an episode in this format.I'm taking a really simple vocabulary topic, in this case personalities, and telling you what I would REALLY say rather than what you might see or read in the textbooks.I'm not trying to teach you obscure vocabulary that no one uses but instead words that people really say that if you want to, you can use them and that you feel confident you understand the meaning when you hear them. Please take into account that I am British, from England and more specifically a town in the South of England. I've also lived in the North of England and now in Spain. These are all well known words but my choice of words may be different than other English speakers. Talking about...the expression "to start afresh"
We start again at the New Year which inevitably means that we reflect and we think about things we want to start, things we want to give, new habits we need to adopt.I was also reflecting about what podcast episode to start the New Year with and this English expression came into my head; To Start Afresh. Have you ever wanted to start something from the beginning again? Give it another shot? Well, in these cases perhaps you want to start afresh. Another reason I really want to teach this one because I don't think I've ever heard a student say it. Therefore, it's a great one to add to your English vocabularly and impress your colleagues! In this episode, I put this English expression in context with common sentence examples and also touch on some other closely related phrases such as To go back to square one. 4 phrasal verbs with "across" and how to use them
Following on from my episode last week breaking down phrasal verbs in English, this week I start with a selection of 4 Advanced English phrasal verbs with the preposition Across. ACROSS fits in two key categories of meaning which are Finding and Communication. I cover 4 phrasal verbs including; come across (econtrarse), to stumble across (encontrarse), to come across (dar la impresión) & to get across (hacer entender). Firstly I put each phrasal verb in context with sentences then I give you common collocations and how to use the phrasal verb technically i.e is it inseparable/separable and transitive/intransitive.
