Do you bore yourself using the same words all the time? I've found that when talking about strategies before tend to use the same words over and over again - create, implement, define. They are all absolutely fine but let's try and add a bit of variety. Mix it up a little. You didn't understand what that person just asks you but you don't want to seem stupid in a professional environment. Does that resonate with you? I'm sure like my clients you are quite comfortable with expressing your personal opinion but what about when you have to make a general statement? What other pieces of vocabulary do you know apart from "in general"? Ask is a verb that has a big return on investmentif you can learn to use it properly. It's a core verb and the structures that I talk about in this episode are essential ones that you will have to use at some point. I know core tenses isn't as sexy as business expressions but it is arguably much more important. Making mistakes with core tenses (present, past, future, present perfect) is a more serious mistake than for example missing an S on your plural or using an ininstead of an on preposition. I spend a lot of my time working with my students on these core tenses so that there are perfect. If you have a great command of these core tenses you can be confident working in a business  environment in English. Remember that the first step is to be aware that you're making a mistake and then you can correct it. Recently a lot of you have asked me about how I've learnt Spanish. After living in Spain for nearly 4 years now I think it's actually a good point to look back and share what things I've done to get where I am now.  When I came to Spain at 26 I basically spoke NO Spanish. I'd been taught Spanish at secondary school but had forgotten absolutely everything. Acronyms are a business person's best friend. They save us time so that we don't have to say all the tricky words, which can be handy from an English learner point of view.We use them in writing and also in speaking however there are two important things to take into account. 1) Is the acronym spoken? Not always. 2) How do we say the acronym? Sometimes we say it together and sometimes we say the letters individually. What is a dump? Funny word actually. It can mean where you put rubbish i.e a rubbish dump. It's also a synonym for poo (Nice, I know!) The 3rd conditional. The worst of them all! The one everybody loves to hate. Well, that's try and change that. See the conditionals as a way to express yourself at a higher level. If you stop and notice, we use the conditionals a lot, including at work.When we are talking about what we would have done differently, what we could have done if we had more time or more budget and how we are going to use this learning in future work and projects.In this episode I introduce the conditional and go through an example. Break down is a beautiful and fascinating phrasal verb that has multiple meanings and I wanted  to share it with you. I've been looking at this phrasal verb recently in my classes and it gave me the inspiration.Some of the meanings are very common and useful at work too. This one tense that a lot of Spanish speakers don't use or make a lot of mistakes with. Recently, I've been correcting this a lot so I thought it was worth dedicating a bit of time to it.It makes sense because in Spanish you would say "Llevo tres años viviendo aquí" and in English we say "I've been living in Madrid for 3 years" (Cue brain explode emoji)in this episode I cover the main mistakes to avoid and ways that you can tell if you need to use this tense or not. I also cover how we can measure time with this tense using For and Since which is another sticking point for students. This little modal verb phrase has been popping up a lot in my classes and teaching so I want to teach it to you. This is a common confusion with the verb Suppose (which is different) and it is VERY common mistake. Students say "It's supposed that" instead of "to be supposed to" in the correct form. I go through and give you 3 clear examples of how we use this structure in the real life to talk about expectation and requirement in the present and past tense.I really encourage you to think about your own sentences with "To be supposed to" after listening to this episode and to start using them when you speak English.I hope you find this useful. I see it all the time AT THE END of emails when students make an offer or promise about something they want to do.
