Summary:In this episode, we focus on one of the people we introduced in the last episode: Ron Numbers. His book, Prophetess of Health, has been cited as one of the most (if not the most) important scholarly studies on Ellen White. We explore how the book was written, what it says, and what happened after it was published.Note: There are clips of Ron Numbers and Jonathan Butler in this episode. I'm grateful to Peter Dixon for conducting an interview with those two. If you'd like to watch the full interview, check out Peter Dixon’s SDA Q&A, S2, #27). Summary:The occult was on the rise in the late 1960s, culminating in the "Satanic Panic" of the 1980s. Would-be prophets and saviors emerged claiming to be explain why the world seemed to be going crazy and how the church could be saved. Some Adventists believed them. It didn't work out too well, but it became a part of why the Adventist church is the way that it is today. The What:The Adventist History Podcast is a monthly podcast telling a story of the Seventh-day Adventist Church hosted by Matthew J. (S2, E52) Sevvy Science
Summary:The late 1950s-1960s saw an incredible growth of interest in science. Those years also saw a second wave of interest in what became known as "creation science" - the attempt to situate fiat creation on a scientific basis. As with the first wave c1920, Adventists were a big part of it. Several Adventists were sent to prestigious universities to pursue high degrees and engage in the work of creation science. The Geoscience Research Institute was born. But just as a renewed interest in science elevated Adventist scientists, so a renewed interest in purging "liberalism" forced some of them into exile. The What:The Adventist History Podcast is a monthly podcast telling a story of the Seventh-day Adventist Church hosted by Matthew J.
