We are three geeks stuck in the world of 80s and 90s nerd culture (and sometimes here and now) looking at cartoons, movies, music, TV, toys, conspiracies. Asking 'Are there too many reboots or not enough?' 'Can bands release music after a key member dies?' 'What is the best 80s cartoon or toy?' All this and much more!

Imran Mirza, Denis-Jose Francois and 'Old Boys Club' creator Dan Collacott have a sit-down to discuss the show, how and why it came to be, along with the challenges of creating a horror-based narrative that relies solely on what a person hears. C.E.N.K. #67: "Daft Punk: The legacy of CM Punk"
Welcome to Episode #67 of the Close Encounters of the Nerd Kind podcast which sees Tee-J Sutherland, Dan Collacott and Imran Mirza discuss all things CM Punk.
The 2nd September 2023 saw the termination of CM Punk's relationship with AEW following a tumultuous period that saw some well-received matches, promos and rivalries, not withstanding two AEW World Championship title wins. Punk's time in AEW was sadly not without incident however. Following the All Out PPV, 4th September 2022, the press conference after the event saw Punk publicly address a series of backstage frustrations with the company's EVPs, Colt Cabana and members of the press. When confronted in his locker room by Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks, a fight ensued resulting in all participants receiving suspensions.
Nine months later, Punk's return to the company was short-lived as another backstage fight broke out between Punk and Jack Perry which was also believed to have involved AEW founder Tony Khan who promptly fired Punk for his behaviour.
This episode of CENK addresses the incidents, looks at the catalysts of each and what could have been done differently, plus we look at where Punk goes from here. And finally we look at CM Punk's legacy in AEW as well asking the question, "Is Punk the perennial victim or a self-destructive narcissist?"

We also carry out a detailed conversation into the notion of AI and its burgeoning impact on our lives and, perhaps more specifically, the art that we consume. Does art without the human touch still inspire you? Is there a line between marvelling at technological advancements and fearing a constructed future tailored meticulously to everything we as individuals like?

C.E.N.K. #66: "AEW All In London, 27-08-23"
After a lengthy hiatus - and with great excitement - the Close Encounters of the Nerd Kind podcast finally unveils Episode #66 and sees Dan, Tee-J and Imran reconnect over their shared passion for square circle related discussions.
More specifically, the team are discussing the ground-breaking AEW PPV - broadcast live from Wembley Stadium, Sunday 27th August 2023 - which also saw Tee-J in live attendance with some of our 4ever affiliates, Richard Roth and Richard Iacono. We discuss the full match card, engage in lots of supplementary AEW conversations and there's a fair amount of CM Punk chat too. (Further to this, our next episode will feature an in-depth assessment of CM Punk's legacy in AEW and pro wrestling in general - so look out for that no-doubt lengthy episode in early-October.)
On a personal note, Close Encounters of the Nerd Kind was the flagship show for the 4ever in Electric Dreams podcast network and while that network has started to grow with the 90s State of Mind podcast, Supple & Lean, the Minicasts and the soon-to-be unveiled The4everList series, it's an absolute joy to be able to bring Close Encounters and the original trio back to the airwaves.

90s State of Mind #18: "The Velvet Rope"
Welcome to Episode #18 of the 90s State of Mind podcast - a collaborative project between 4ever in Electric Dreams and Blue-in-Green:RADIO. This podcast series sees Imran (London, UK) and Rhonda (California, USA) delve into some of their favourite releases from the 90s and for this episode, the pair celebrate the 1997 album from the pop pioneer, Janet Jackson's 'The Velvet Rope'.
The Velvet Rope is the sixth studio album by American singer Janet Jackson. The album was released on October 7, 1997, through Virgin Records. Prior to its release, she renegotiated her contract with Virgin for US$80 million, the largest recording contract in history at that time. Its composition fuses various genres, including pop, R&B, trip hop, folk, jazz, rock and techno music. Considered to be Jackson's most mature recording, it is regarded as a template for pop artists transitioning to a darker or rebellious sound and as a precursor to the development of alternative R&B. The album was certified triple platinum by the RIAA and has sold an estimated eight million copies worldwide.
Imran & Rhonda delve deep into this definitive 90s classic looking at the factors that drove Janet to create the record, its progressive depictions of sexuality, R&B and pop music of the time and of course we delve into the remixes in support of the project as usual.

With a mix of average to negative reviews, discussion turns to Taika Watiti's impact on the character since 'Ragnarok' and asks whether a new take on the god is now needed. Where does the character of Thor go from here and how does he continue to fit into the ever-changing climate of the MCU?

For this episode of the Close Encounters... Minicast, Dan Collacott, Imran Mirza and friend of the show, Stuart Giblin, celebrate their fandom for one of the most revered trilogies in film history - 'Back to the Future' - but we go as far as to pitch a potential fourth installment within the franchise. Ever wondered whether Marty became a the rock star he always wanted to? And ever wonder where Doc & family ventured off to on the magical train of time travel? We can answer none of those questions but don't let that put you off listening to the episode for the fun of it more than anything.

Episode #64 of the Close Encounters of the Nerd Kind podcast sees Dan, Imran and friend of show, Rich Roth, take a veritable journey through nostalgia as we each look at the forms of entertainment that we now love but that we seemingly missed upon initial release.
With an entertaining array of discussion points from music to 90s US sitcoms to 80s teen believe-in-yourself-you-can-do-anything-you-set-your-minds-to movies, we ask how we possibly let some of these treasures slip through our hands first go round. Plus, there's an extensive, fairly nonsenical pre-amble, focusing on coffee, living overseas and Bovril on bread.

C.E.N.K. #63: "Women in Action Films"
Episode #63 of the Close Encounters of the Nerd Kind podcast sees Dan, Tee-J and Imran delve into the presentation of women within action films.
Episodes #59 and #60 of this podcast series saw the team review the 80s action movie genre specifically through the movies 'Cobra', 'Big Trouble in Little China' and 'The Wraith' (all from 1986) and in an unofficial follow-up to that conversation, we look at how women were positioned within those films and ask where Hollywood's reluctance to feature women more prominently comes from. Tossing aside the notion of the damsel in distress, the team celebrates some of the incredible performances of female-fronted movies citing some of our personal favourite roles and performances. We conclude with a discussion about women in super hero films and the importance of films like 'Wonder Woman' (2017) and the Disney+ series 'Ms Marvel (2022).

This go-round sees the team explore the glorious genre of 80s action movies as we seek to fill the gaps within our own catalogues. There's lots of preamble about the genre itself as we look at some of the icons of the time with a small dalliance into horror territory as well.
Plus we ask the all important questions, "What does the 'Tee' in 'Tee-J' stand for anyway?"

C.E.N.K. #58: "Why So Serious?"
Episode #58 of the Close Encounters of the Nerd Kind podcast sees the team ponder the increasingly darker portrayals of our big screen super heroes.
From the recent depiction of Matt Reeves' grittier and violent representation of 'The Batman' to Sam Raimi's heavily horror-inspired extension of the MCU's Dr Strange narrative, the team looks back at a simpler time when comic book movies where such themes weren't so prevalent within superhero movies. We seem to have moved on from an era of comic book adaptations treated as exclusive content for child- and family-friendly audiences but is the increased level of violence and adult content symptoms of these movies now being geared towards broader audiences or are today's children exposed to so much more now that the boundaries of what constitutes youth content have just evolved?

C.E.N.K. #49: "Dark Side of the Ring"
Episode #49 of the Close Encounters of the Nerd Kind podcast sees the team delve into the Dark Side of the Ring documentary series exploring those oftentimes tragic stories surrounding the lives of past wrestlers.
By the late-90s, WWF wrestlers were well-known to spend 300 days of the year on the road, travelling from one town to the next to perform. The brutal and gruelling lifestyle impacted wrestlers in many ways with many picking up vices including addictions to alcohol, drugs, pills, etc. As explained in the title, Dark Side of the Ring, as a series, gravitates to these challenging stories bringing to light the difficulties wrestlers experienced in a very much bygone era of wrestling.
Dan Collacott, Imran Mirza and Tee-J Sutherland, as devoted wrestling fans, review two episodes from the three seasons of the show available. Two heart-breaking stories in their own right, we explore:
"The Assassination of Dino Bravo" (season 2, episode 6)
"The Montreal Screwjob" (season 1, episode 2)

C.E.N.K. #47: "The Future That Never Happened"
Episode #47 of the Close Encounters of the Nerd Kind podcast sees Dan Collacott joined by Richard Roth and Denis-Jose Francois as the trio look towards depctions of the future in film that - thankfully - did not actually come to pass.
Predictions of our future usually tend to be split between societies that run on a level of technology we can only dream of and societies trying to adapt to a bleak and uninspired future devoid of hope. While at times striving to celebrate both visions, this episode explores three movies that delve into the more bleak aspects of what may lie ahead for us all. And while the worst of it may not yet have come to pass for the films selected, and while the films discussed may seem like light years away from our current lives, the team explore a series of worrying parrallels that highlights the science within the fiction.

C.E.N.K. #46: "The Death of the British Sitcom"
Episode #46 of the Close Encounters of the Nerd Kind podcast sees Tee-J Sutherland and Dan Collacott joined by long-time listener and even longer-timed friend of the show Stuart Giblin as the team discuss the state of British sitcoms in the UK as once championed the Big Five terrestrial channels.
The UK's long-standing history as champions of innovative and inspired new comedy talent has led the way to some defining moments in our rich entertainment history. Cherished sitcom characters like Alan Partridge, David Brent and Basil Fawlty have become engrained into the fabric of this country's comedy lineage and still serve to inspire subsequent generations. But why does it seem that the once-beloved British sitcom has taken a back seat in the eyes of the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 in favour of more generic formats like panel shows? Has comedy moved on? Are sitcoms just too expensive and high-risk for networks to gamble on and are panel shows subsequently easier because they're cheaper to fund?

C.E.N.K. #44: "When did the Villain become the Hero?"
Episode #44 of the Close Encounters of the Nerd Kind podcast sees Dan, Imran and Denis-Jose Francois sit down to discuss the surprising rise of movies that position established villains as the protagonist. Through movies like Joker, Cruella, Suicide Squad, Venom, Dracula Untold, Maleficent... we're seeing more sympathetic presentations of villains we've come to affectionately *hate* for decades. But what inspires a shift like this - are we running out of super hero stories to tell? Is this a move indicative of evolving audience tastes? And what's the future of on-screen villainy if there are no on-screen villains?

90s State of Mind #10: "Groove Theory" (w/Rhonda)
Welcome to Episode #10 of the 90s State of Mind podcast - a collaborative project between 4ever in Electric Dreams and Blue-in-Green:RADIO. This podcast series sees Imran (London, UK) and Rhonda (California, USA) delve into some of their favourite releases from the 90s and this week, the pair revisit the one-&-only album from incomparable Groove Theory.
Released in 1995 through Epic Records - and spearheaded by the classic single 'Tell Me' - the pairing of vocalist Amel Larrieux and producer Bryce Wilson resulted in one of 90s R&B's most beloved projects. Having achieved moderate success upon release, the duo disbanded a few years after their album release and although there have been efforts to resurrect the Groove Theory name, no new full-lengths have come to fruition. The 90s was certainly a prolific decade for each member with Amel Larrieux having established herself as a solo star with the first of what would be five solo albums having been released in 1999 along with multiple guest appearances on projects by The Roots and Guru. Wilson continued his run of excellent productions jumping behind the boards for colossal names like Mary J Blige, Changing Faces and Toni Braxton.
Imran & Rhonda delve deep into this definitive 90s R&B album looking at the project, remixes, b-sides, solo projects and efforts to revive the group with vocalist Makeda Davis.

Episode #33 of the Close Encounters of the Nerd Kind podcast sees the team pick up where Episode #32 left off... so as a follow-up to our conversation about film franchises, we ask the question, which film franchise would we like to see either revisited or resurrected that hasn't actually been subject to the sequel treatment yet. We also wonder whether we'd actually like to revisit certain characters from our childhood favourites like Ferris Bueller or The Goonies - does the joy in their story come from the boundless potential and possibilities their respective movies set out for them and would actually knowing the rest of their story ruin the mystique?

Comprised of rappers Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler, Mariana "Ladybug Mecca" Vieira, and Craig "Doodlebug" Irving, 'Blowout Comb' was released in 1994 on Pendulum Records, just a year after their debut 'Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space)' which garnered the trio a Grammy for their single 'Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)'
The album proved to be their final full-length effort as a collective despite the numerous tours they would subsequently unite for over the years.

C.E.N.K. #32: "Film Franchises"
Episode #32 of the Close Encounters of the Nerd Kind podcast sees the team delve into the concept of film franchises. Firstly, what actually is a film franchise (a question far more complex to address than it may seem)? We look at some incredibly successful franchises and look at why some fail or perhaps don't resonate with subsequent generations as they should. And we look at what the potential future is for storytelling in this context and whether the small screen could in fact be the big screen's saviour.

C.E.N.K. #25: "The War on Facts"
Welcome to Episode #25 of the Close Encounters of the Nerd Kind podcast. Today's episode sees the C.E.N.K. team delve into the concept of modern day conspiracies within the Trump era. Donald Trump's 2016 election campaign could be argued to have ushered in an entirely new perception at how people digest the information they are supplied and their overall trust for the source it emanated from - the term "fake news" is now commonplace as much as the idea of peoples' personal opinions outweighing facts which subsequently brings us into discussions of the rise of Q-Anon and flat earthers.
