Etiquette Of The Qur'an Reciter Part 2

The beauty of this book ‘With the Noble Qur’an’ is in the author’s comprehensive compilation of Qur’anic verses, prophetic hadiths, and opinions of the traditional scholars on some of the main discussions surrounding the Qur’an. In ten chapters, he effectively covers the superiority of the Qur’an, the etiquette, rewards, and virtues of listening, reciting, and memorising it, the correct method of recitation, the ruling of using melody and of crying out of the fear of Allah, and the warning against forgetting the Qur’an, along with a satisfying discussion on its seven variant readings.
It is difficult to emphasise how inspirational and valuable this book is for a lover of the Qur’an, a hafiz, and for anyone to whom we may want to explain the greatness of the Qur’an.

Or how can it journey to God while shackled by its passions?
Or how can it desire to enter the presence of God while it has not yet purified itself of the stain of its forgetfulness?
Or how can it understand the subtle points of mysteries while it has not yet repented of its offences?"

Lessons From The Qatar FIFA World Cup
The 2022 FIFA World Cup is an international football tournament contested by the men's national teams of FIFA's member associations, and the 22nd FIFA World Cup. It is taking place in Qatar from 20 November to 18 December 2022, making it the first World Cup to be held in the Arab world and Muslim world, and the second held entirely in Asia after the 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan. France are the defending champions, having defeated Croatia 4–2 in the 2018 final. At an estimated cost of over $220 billion, it is the most expensive World Cup ever held; this figure is disputed by Qatari officials, including organising CEO Nasser Al Khater, who said the true cost is $8 billion, and other figures relate to overall infrastructure development since the World Cup was awarded to Qatar in 2010.

The Adhkar of the Naqshbandi Order (Tariqa)
Shaykh Abdur-Rahman (may Allah preserve him) begins by mentioning the origins of the Naqshbandi Tariqa, explains briefly how the order developed over time and highlights some of its distinguishing features. Shaykh then goes through the Khatm Khwajgan (the practise of uttering specific Qur'anic verses, divine names, and remembrances recited at the start of each majlis by the shaykhs of the order) and explains the importance of how the murid should internalise the meaning of each du’a' whilst reciting them. One can only truly benefit from what they ask Allah if they understand what they are asking. Shaykh then reveals how the aspirant should hold fast to supplications as it is only through abundant prayers that a servant expresses their need to Allah, rendering Him to be the only fulfiller of their needs. What is the Cure for Extreme Greed
Summary:
• extreme greed with no contentment, no satisfaction and no shukr to Allah. It is a blameworthy desire.
• Dedicating most of our time and effort to our work and / or comparing ourselves to others is a result of avid greed.
• It is a state of our heart and mind and can be never-ending.
• Opposite is contentment: Qan’at.
• How to achieve qana’t;
o Moderation in spending (which is half of our livelihood - Hadith).
o Sustenance is decreed ACCORDING TO OUR EFFORTS AND HARD WORK.
o Realise the honour in being self-sufficient as opposed to degrading and humiliating ourselves to achieve our desires.
o Reflect on the lives of the Prophets.
o Give shukr to Allah. o Be happy with what we have.
o Be realistic and identify those things that are beneficial, and those things that are harmful.
• Greed is a form of psychological slavery; it overcomes us, and we become a slave to it.
• Contentment brings dignity and true freedom.
• Satisfaction is when we do things purely for Allah.
• There will always be someone (including a family) who condemn people who are content because those who are content do not conform with society’s expectations.
• Comparing ourselves to others will bring chronic stress and depression.
• Powerful reminder - Surah Taha [20:131].
However, when it comes to religious practice and piety, we should look at people who are above us to inspire and motivate us to do better for the Hereafter.

THE STORY OF THE PROPHET SULAYMAN
Sulayman (AS) was born and raised in Jerusalem, Palestine. He was the son of Prophet Dawud (AS) and, just like his father, Sulayman (AS) was greatly loved by Allah. Allah gifted Sulayman (AS) with miracles that no other Prophet had: Sulayman (AS) could understand and communicate with all kinds of animals, and he could command the wind. The jinn are unseen beings created by Allah, and Sulayman (AS) was given the power to command them too. One time, Sulayman (AS) was marching through a valley with his magnificent army of Jinn, men and birds. The army came to a valley which happened to be the home of ants. Seeing this great army, one ant said to the others,
"Hide in your homes, before Sulayman (AS) and his army crush you under their feet!”
Sulayman (AS) understood what the ant had said. He smiled to himself and thanked Allah for all the special gifts he had been given. Sulayman (AS) achieved amazing feats during his lifetime. The Qur'an tells many stories of Sulayman (AS) and his amazing achievements.

An Introduction to the Book of Wisdoms Published by White Thread Press
Title: An Introduction to the Book of Wisdoms Published by White Thread Press
Speaker: Dr. Mufti Abdur-Rahman ibn Yusuf
Shaykh Ibn Ata'illah al-Iskandari & Shaykh 'Abdullah Gangohi
Translation of the Hikam by Victor Danner Commentary Edited by Andrew Booso & Abdur-Rahman ibn Yusuf
Muslim religious life not only consists of belief in orthodox tenets of faith and a determined effort to follow the Sacred Law, it also requires one to scale the heights of the spiritual path. The Kitab al-Hikam of Shaykh Ibn ‘Ata’illah al-Iskandari is the inspiring explanation of the soul’s journey through this life, as determined through the Qur’an and Sunna. Along with his treatises and intimate discourses (munajat), the substantive feature of the work is the author’s 264 spiritual aphorisms (hikam)—concise, comprehensive and sublime sayings on self purification (tazkiya), and guidelines to help strengthen the relationship between humans and their Lord. These aphorisms, which have never failed to inspire, are presented in this edition according to the systematic arrangement of the great Indian scholar Shaykh ‘Ali Muttaqi (d. 975/1567), together with the indispensable commentary of the twentieth-century sage Shaykh ‘Abdullah Gangohi.

Danger of Satisfaction with One's Ego [Hikam 35]
In this lecture Shaykh Abdur-Rahman mentions two factors which lead one to sin and that the root cause of it is satisfaction with the self and ones spiritual condition, the seeker believing that he or she does not need to strive or do anymore to further their progress. In this condition ones weaknesses will stay hidden and they will remain obedient to their evil nafs. Shaykh advises that by the seeker examining themselves closely and always searching for their defects instead of those of others, their nafs will eventually turn to obedience and then it will become easier for them to continuously strive for good. During the initial stages of the struggle Shaykh highlights how it’s important for the seeker to continue to attend the dhikr gatherings; complete with regularity their prescribed adhkar (each dhikr providing a different nourishment to the heart) and keep the Shaykh informed of their condition as all these factors will give them the extra strength to persevere and stay optimistic through the trials of the struggle.

Disciplining the Ego for Ultimate Servitude [Hikam 32 & 34]
Hikam 32 & 34, page 151
Shaykh Abdur-Rahman discusses how the seeker can adorn themselves with the virtuous attributes of the angels and the rightous believers such as obedience, humility, serenity, patience. However, in order for them to gain these qualities the evil attributes of their physical limbs (cursing, back-biting, etc.) and the evils of their heart (pride, envy, love for fame, etc.) must be removed. Sincerity is only then achieved. The seeker will now be able to reach divine proximity and respond truthfully to the call of His Master, thus being worthy to be called a true servant.

The Shaykh gives points on how the seeker of the path must act in order to confirm his testimony of faith. He provides details of the different external aspects of the body through which dust settles on the heart. By purifying these parts one begins to see with the eyes of the heart and the inclination to purity grows stronger. Allah says in the Qur’an that for Him is the pure Deen.

The Secrets Of Prayer And Variety In Worship [Hikam 119 - 120]
Shaykh Abdur-Rahman unravels another precious jewel from The Book of Wisdoms by the great Ibn Ata’illah al-Iskandari. The mysteries of the ritual prayer, why it is performed and what benefit one can derive from it. Ibn Ata’illah mentions that the prayer is a purification of the hearts, it removes from it the contamination of indulgences of the world and restores back the divine perception of one's natural fitrah. The salat is a mi’raj of the believer and only through this intimate discourse can one enter into the domain of the innermost being. To enter this domain, one must develop wuquf qalbi.
Shaykh mentions that as Allah is aware of the existence of weariness in man He has allowed for varying acts of worship such as fasting, du’a, recitation of Qur’an, hajj etc. The taste of each of these acts are different ensuring that one does not become bored with one particular act. Also, as Allah knows the impulsive nature of man, He has ordained the 5 compulsory prayers to be at its particular times which allows one to execute each prayer with perfection. Acts of devotion an aspirant enthusiastically indulgences in will help to make them closer and more attentive to the presence of Allah. This stage of ihsan, worshipping Allah as though you are seeing Him is the goal of every seeker of the path and is only attained if one has wuquf qalbi.

Strengthening The Dead Heart
In this talk Shaykh Abdur-Rahman begins by mentioning the importance of balance in every aspect of a person’s life. Quoting, Hujjat al-Islam Imam Ghazali on one having the “prophetic equilibrium”, considering our Prophet (may peace and blessings be upon Him) was the most balanced in everything. Shaykh goes on to differentiate between the illnesses of the body and the heart and its cures. Just as the one who has a physical illness seeks out a cure for his condition, the one who has an ill heart must also seek out an ailment for his condition. However, the Shaykh mentions that the latter person is in deception. As his nafs is engrossed in the worldly pleasures he cannot diagnose his illness, therefore, there will be no change in his condition. The Shaykh goes on to mention how one can awaken this dead heart and build to strengthen it by mentioning the importance and effects of muraqaba.

Istiqama (Steadfastness) In Worship
In this talk, Shaykh Abdur-Rahman begins by mentioning how an aspirant should change their perspective of worship in order to progress in the path. To develop ones understanding of worship, the Shaykh mentions that a part of it includes the individual working out things for themselves, but it is crucial that they are under the guidance of an experienced teacher. This will safeguard one from deviating from the path and it is only through the wise words from ones teacher can one be taught the more refined ways of worship. Shaykh Mangera then talks about how it is important for one to have istiqamah (steadfastness) in performing acts of devotion and not become extreme minded in either becoming completely heedless or excessive in worship. Allah mentions in the Qur'an “I did not create Jinn and mankind except to worship me” but it does not mean that one deprives their mind and body from indulgence as these also have a right over us. The prophet (may peace and blessings be upon Him) emphasised on the middle path, our deen if of moderation and worship should be the same. Shaykh Abdur-Rahman therefore mentions that for one to have the wuquf qalbi they must rectify their intentions with every action even if it is regarding worldly affairs. Allah says regarding the ones who have understanding, they are those “who remember Allah standing and sitting and on their sides…”. Worship is thereby the way one leads their life and not something of formality in which a person is in constant worship.

Halal Meat Issues (HMC)
Many Muslims who originate from the Indian sub continent, Africa or Arab countries naively think that all meat and poultry is slaughtered in a simple manner which they saw practised in the countries they came from. What we have failed to realise is the demand for Halal meat and poultry has dramatically increased in the west and the companies supplying the meat and poultry have had to look for ways to increase the output. This has meant finding quicker ways of slaying the animals and at the same time keeping within the Halal laws. With this proving difficult, many slaughterhouses have looked for shortcuts in the Halal rules, many disregard the Halal slaughter prerequisites and many have no knowledge of the prerequisites whilst the main aim has become the increase of production and its returns.

This talk, the last one held in the Ramadhan, Shaykh Abdur-Rahman begins by giving a few advises to the salik (the one on the path of spirituality) and how their behaviour of conduct should be of forbearance and seeking excuses for others. Shaykh then goes on to mention some aphorisms on sincerity compiled in ‘The Book of Wisdoms’ written by the great 14th century Sufi and scholar Shaykh Ibn Ata’illah al-Iskandari. He writes that ‘actions are lifeless forms, the presence of sincerity within them is what endows them with a living spirit’. Shaykh Mangera mentions that it is important for the initiate to keep his intention firm and not get distracted or too engrossed in the sweetness of the unveilings of mystical experiences. These experiences Iibn Ata’illah mentions are just creations like ourselves and serve as trials to test ones true desire for worship. By this, Shaykh Abdur-Rahman mentions that entertainment and pleasure, the main fitna and challenge in today's society is both a danger for the salik and the non-salik.

Requirements For The Love For Allah
In this lecture, Shaykh Abdur-Rahman begins by mentioning the ayah regarding the believers: “Those who believe are intensely in love with Allah” The Shaykh differentiates between superficial and true love. He mentions that Allah has placed the attraction for beauty in our hearts, therefore it should only be natural that we incline to the love of Allah as He is most perfect in all His attributes. Love has requirements. For one to claim their love to be sincere, their actions must mirror their emotion of their heart. The way of this path helps the seeker to build their love for Allah with increased adhkhars while at the same time pushing away the false love for this world. The Shaykh mentions the importance of this and that in ones heart a person either has the love for Allah or the world, they cannot co-exist.

Finally, Shaykh Abdur-Rahman mentions the invaluable advices that the great Tabi'i Uways al-Qarni gave to Haram ibn Hayyan regarding the traits of Allah's Friends.

The Abode Of Deception [Hikam 71 And 83]
Shaykh Abdur-Rahman reveals the two types of abodes: the Abode of Deception - this worldly life, and the Abode of Permanence - the Akhirah.
The Shaykh explains that sometimes when Allah deprives you of something you consider good (such as wealth, honour and sustenance) it is in reality an actual bounty because He desires to reward you in full in the Everlasting Abode since this world is deemed insufficient. This world is low, inferior and degraded and the akhirah is high, superior and elevated.
The Shaykh advises that by the seeker continuing with their regular adhkar and remembering death frequently will strengthen their conviction in the hereafter, they will see the reality of the delusion of this world, persevere in the struggle to disassociate their nafs from this false world and strive to acquire the permanent good of the akhirah.

Don't Abandon Dhikr Just Because You cannot Concentrate [Hikam 47]
In this session, Shaykh Abdur-Rahman discusses how one can progress with their dhikr and how it is important to not abandon it despite low levels of concentration. It is a ploy of Shaytaan to get one to abandon dhikr altogether as he knows the great benefit dhikr holds.
The Shaykh goes on to mentions that concentration levels develop over time and it is important for one to not become hopeless or despondent. The journey of dhikr is such that one must first engage their tongue in the rememberance of Allah and the heart will then follow, both becoming in sync.
Allah has said “If you remember me then I will remember you”. This is how the Lord honours and bestows His grace upon His obedient servants by allowing them to remember Him and He remembering them. By acknowledging this the Seeker of the Path holds dear each precious second of the dhikr and mediation and enthusiastically builds upon it.

Never Grieve Again - Removing the Causes of Grief [Hikam 226]
In this lecture the Shaykh reveals the major cause for grief and explains how it is a self inflicted issue. He explains that when a person has a strong attachment to worldly objects and then suffers their loss, great misery and distress overcomes them. This is because they have failed to understand that this is a temporal imperfect world, and therefore, all its goods will be defective and its use will only be for a limited time. Shaykh Abdur-Rahman advises that by managing ones possessions and sufficing upon needs only, they will be content at times of loss as they posses only little. By this sacrifice Allah will grant the person honour and His close friendship, all which never perishes.

The Two Indispensable Graces of God [Hikam 97 & 98]
"And if you attempted to count all the favours of Allah, you will not be able to innumerate them..." (Surah Nahl)
From all the limitless bounties Allah has decended upon His creation, the Shaykh discusses two graces that are inevitable and inseparable for every creature; the grace of existence and the grace of sustenance.
Muslim religious life not only consists of belief in orthodox tenets of faith and a determined effort to follow the Sacred Law, it also requires one to scale the heights of the spiritual path. In this series we will study the book 'The Kitab al-Hikam' of Shaykh Ibn ‘Ata’illah al-Iskandari. It is the inspiring explanation of the soul’s journey through this life, as determined through the Qur’an and Sunna. These aphorisms, which have never failed to inspire.

The Ray Of Hope In The Darkness [Hikam 197]
In this talk the Shaykh emphasizes how the spiritual seeker should not become despondent of the mercy of Allah, and that even after one has sinned he or she must think of the mercy of His Lord. The Shaykh reveals that the problem lies with habituated sins and that the key of removing this is making sincere repentance and having conviction that only Allah can safeguard them from their evil desires. If one does not believe this he or she has underestimated the Divine Power. The seeker should hold firm to the fact that nothing is beyond Allah's power. He is dominant over everything and the only administrator and manipulator of the hearts. Shaykh Abdur-Rahman mentions that at times Allah places situations of darkness or confusion upon His servants to make them realise that it is only Allah who can bring them out of it and that they just need to have hope and good thoughts about Him.

The True Seeker
In this week's majlis Shaykh Abdur-Rahman highlights the difference between one having a mere wish or desire for something and one having a clear objective and goal they are striving towards. Shaykh mentions that if one is serious about an objective then he or she would exert effort and strive for it. Therefore, as one hopes to be the inhabitant of Jannatul Firdous, the highest Paradise, this will demand labour and hard work. If the aspirant finds that they are unable to do this then their objective is a mere wish. Shaykh Abdur-Rahman then reveals how it is important that the aspirant always asks Allah with real desire. If Allah knows what is in your heart to be good then He will aid you in your task and grant you the best. One should have hope and keep good thoughts of Him. Finally, the Shaykh mentions the virtues and importance of seeking knowledge and advises are given to the student of knowledge on how they can ensure that they are indeed acquiring the fruits of knowledge.

Attaining The Characteristics Of The Most Merciful (Rahman)
In this discourse the Shaykh highlights how a person worships Allah and how they act in situations of trial or bounty will be according to how much they know Allah, His Names and Attributes. If the seeker experiences grief over something which has been restricted and withheld from them, then they have not understood the way of Allah. Ibn Ata'illah mentions in the Book of Wisdom that when Allah gives, He is showing you His kindness and when He deprives you, He shows you His power, and in all that He is showing you His gentleness. Shaykh advises that the aspirant in times of blessing should recognise that the bounty has come from Allah alone. This should increase ones love for Him. Also, ones dependency on Allah will strengthen if the aspirant turns to Him first for all of his or her needs. Shaykh Abdur-Rahman mentions that now, as the aspirant understands that only Allah gives, they will neither experience grief or sorrow when something is restricted from them. The characteristics of Ar-Rahman such as generosity, gentleness and kindness to others will then begin to enhance within them.

Allah's Grace
In this week’s majlis the murid is reminded of their purpose of taking this path and that the goal is to recognise and gain the closeness of the Creator. Shaykh mentions the two doors of reaching Allah. One is through physical death and the other is by following the path of the sufis. The paradise of of this world is the recognition of Allah, through which the servant realises their lowly status and the true majesty of their Master. Shaykh Abdur-Rahman mentions that when Allah desires closeness with His servant He covers their faults and weaknesses with His honourable attributes. The task then of the aspirant is to be regular and strive in performing the prescribed litanies. When the heart receives a sufficient amount of these adhkar, doors will begin to open up, and one will then desire to increase in the extra acts of worship. It is only through the optional acts that one draws closer to Allah. With every virtuous deed performed the aspirant must do shukr that he or she was allowed to carry it out, and then also seek forgiveness for the shortcomings of their actions. By the aspirant acknowledging their weakness’, believing that they have no ability to do any good without His grace, the journey to their Lord will only begin to illuminate.

The Clear Path Of Spirituality
This week's majlis, the Shaykh explains how the path to reach Allah is clear. Allah Himself says that He has perfected this religion for us and completed His favour upon us and He has approved Islam as our Deen. Through the living example of the Prophet (may peace and blessings be upon him) the sacred laws were set and we know how to perform each and every action in accordance to the pleasure of Allah. The Shaykh then mentions that if there is any confusion about the path, it is only because of one's spiritual blindness. What causes this spiritual blindness is when one has allowed his or her desires to govern them. He then advises that the aspirant must be consistent with their dhikr, almost considering it to be a sin when they miss it. This dhikr is most challenging but it is the strongest and most effective tool in breaking ones desires. Once the aspirant struggles in weakening his or her desires, Allah will open up the path for them and grant them the closeness to His awliya'.

Part of human nature is to feel a sense of indebtedness and display gratitude for the one who has done a kind favour upon you. The Noble Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) sent as mercy to all the worlds, is undeniably our greatest benefactor. His sacrifice, concern and compassion for the ummah are not unkown to us.
The Shaykh mentions the meritorious act of sending durood, a good few of its virtues and how this is the key in gaining closeness to the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam).

Removing Negligence And Heedlessness
Shaykh Abdur-Rahman highlights the difference between the creation of the angels and man. The angels are created from light (nur) and their sole purpose is to carry out the commands of Allah; they can never sin. Man, on the other hand, is created from dust and has the choice of obeying or disobeying his or her Creator. Man will always have the potential to sin. Shaykh then mentions that it is only when one forgets Allah that they commits an act of disobedience. When negligence (ghafla) is removed, one will minimise their potential of sinning. Shaykh advises that the murid must not restrict their 'remembrance of Allah' to just particular formalities such as salat, qur'an recitation, tasbihaat. Every action that one does they should connect it to Allah so that they can be 24/7 conscious of Allah. Here, the Shaykh emphasises the importance of righteous company as it is through good company that one can acquire these admirable traits.

Salat: The Coolness of the Eyes
Mufti Abdur-Rahman reveals how the 5 daily prayers commanded by Allah for His servants is like for the salik being invited to a meal five times a day, varying in different cuisines. Shaykh explains that as Allah is aware of the weariness of man in performing regular actions, He has designed an act of worship that incorporates many types of worship within it; this is salat. The one engaged in this worship is taken through different postures (qiyam, ruku', sujud) and different remembrances (hamd, qira’at, durood). These movements, changing from one act to another ensures that the worshipper remains invigorated throughout their prayer and then salat truly becomes a mi’raj (means of spiritual ascension). The Shaykh advises that the aspirant must try to establish a sort of routine and prepare beforehand for each prayer. Finally, he mentions the three levels of pleasure in salat and reveals the special place reserved for those who perform their salat with special attention. The status of that salat when it becomes the coolness of the eyes.

Fear And Hope: The Two Wings Of Faith
Shaykh Abdur- Rahman (hafizahullah) reveals how it is normal that one's faith constantly fluctuates. At times the heart feels inclined to worship and on other occasions it feels gloomy and distant. The task then for the seeker on the path is that they must master their emotions so that in these different states, in moments of vulnerability they know what Allah requires of them. By keeping one's hope and fear balanced the seeker will be able to reach an equilibrium. When the aspirant feels gloomy and begins despairing they must think of the divine mercy of Allah and contemplate on all what they have been blessed with. This will increase one's hope in Allah.
And when the aspirant feels too secure in their worship and signs of vanity begin to show they must contemplate on all their shortcomings and their acts of transgression to their Ever-Watchful Lord. This will then increase one's fear of Allah.
Just as a bird needs its two wings to fly smoothly, the aspirant should also ensure that his/her hope and fear in Allah is equally balanced. And when this is regulated the aspirant will find their imaan fluctuating less and becoming more stronger.

The Sin Which Is Superior To A Particular Worship
This discourse advises seekers on how they should not feel confident and secure in their acts of worship. Shaykh mentions that at times, Allah opens up for them the doors of obedience and allows them to engage in abundant worship whereas the doors of acceptance are closed. Mufti Abdur-Rahman explains that the aspirant's goal should be to gain the closeness of their Lord and to desire for their acts of worship to be accepted, just as one gives a gift to another and hopes that they would happily receive it. The Shaykh advises that the aspirant should not be deceived by the external forms of their sins. Sometimes Allah may condemn you to a sin but that is in fact your return to Him. Here the shaykh reveals the superiority of that sin which entails one to feel remorse and regret, over that act of worship which makes one arrogant and secure.

Don't Be Deceived When Everything Goes Too Well
Mufti Abdur-Rahman unravels another wisdom from ibn 'Ata'illah's Book of Wisdoms, a highly recommended book for any seeker wanting to traverse the higher stations of the Path. The wisdom discussed warns the murid to be critical of their shortcomings and not to be deceived by apparent bounties especially if they open after one has sinned, causing them to forget to repent. Shaykh Abdur-Rahman mentions that for those who constantly turn away from the reminders given to them (e.g. though lectures or otherwise) by Allah, Allah makes them forget to seek forgiveness, and opens up for them the bounties of this world and then step by step they are led to ruin until they are seized unexpectedly. The Shaykh then mentions the importance of doing shukr and advises that after one receives a blessing he or she should rush to make shukr. The 3 fundamentals of shukr are given in which if one carries them out then it will be the means to reach Allah.

The True Inheritors Of The Prophets
The lecture begins by mentioning how Allah says in the Qur’an that none testify to His oneness except Himself, His Angels and the People of Knowledge. The nobility of those with knowledge is that Allah approved of them personally: they are mentioned in a narration to be the inheritors of the Prophets and in the Qur’an Allah mentions that only they (the scholars) truly fear Him. Shaykh then expresses the importance of one having a regular input of knowledge in their life as sacred knowledge gives life to the beating heart and results to virtuous deeds being carried out. One can gain these benefits by either: joining to a full-time course, an online course, taking short courses or even by attending daily held lectures. Sacred Knowledge is the only asset that will swim with a person if they were to drown. If one is poor than it will be their riches. If one is wealthy than it will only be their adornment. For those who seek the Sacred Knowledge it is mentioned that Allah draws over them a special covering of love which stays with them until they continue to study. If the aspirant desires to leave behind a legacy and wants their signature to rest alongside the noble messenger (may peace and blessings be upon Him) then they must seek out this sacred knowledge and ask their Lord for sincerity and the ability.

The Mercies Of A Masjid
What exactly is a masjid? Is there a difference between a masjid, musallā, and jamāt khāna, etc? These are questions which need detailed discussion.
Nowadays, in the west, many Islamic Centers being managed include, among other things, a prayer hall, musallā, or jamāt khāna. Some communities rent an industrial unit, a store front, a house, or an apartment in which members of the Muslim community gather to perform congregational prayer (and in many cases
social activities). Many communities actually have purchased property which they consider their masjid.
Which of the above can technically be considered a masjid, and what are the related rulings?

What is Sufism? A formal Explanation Part 19: The two types of Dhikr
If you purchased a deserted uncultivated piece of land and wanted to plant some trees there and make a nice garden. Would you exert your effort in clearing out the entire land before planting the trees or would you decide to make a small clearing and start planting first, then clear it? This lecture discusses and highlights the differences between the dhikr of the heart and dhikr with the tongue and the type of dhikr advised for the iniate on the Path.
Notes: Friday 15th May 2019.
Two types of dhikr, discussion stemming from the 10th principle of the Path: The Dhikr of Allah and Reflection upon His Creation.
How to do dhikr?Broadly speaking there are 2 main ways of doing dhikr:
Dhikr by using the tongue (repeating certain words such as la ilaha illallah, salawat, istighfar, e.t.c)
Dhikr of the heart (no movement of the tounge is involved, rather the heart takes the name of Allah)
Both of these approaches have the same goal, to ultimately purify ones heart, though the methodologies differ.
Its example, as given by Shaykh Abdur-Rahman, is a person who buys a deserted uncultivated piece of land and wishes to plant some trees there and make a nice garden. Some may choose to clear out the entire land before planting whilst others may decide to make a small clearing and start planting atraight away.
The method of the first is like doing dhikr with the tongue and the latter is dhikr with the heart.
Which approach is best? Those who are new to the path of spirituality are advised to start with dhikr with the tounge as it is easier to do so. Despite an absence of focus and a distracted mind a person still benefits by repeating and listening to the words of the dhikr.
Dhikr of the heart, despite it being more affective, a person will generally loose focus quicker until he or she learns focus. Most tariqas start with dhikr of the tongue. When the person remains consistent with their dhikr and it becomes their second nature they are then moved to the dhikr of the heart.
One key advise: - Dhikr should never be abandoned, even if one cannot get themselves to focus. Despite this distraction a person is still being rewarded. With persistence and effort a time will come when a person will gain this attentiveness and focus to such an extent that he or she will find all other distractions dissipate and their attention and focus will just be on Allah.
"All other desires have finally departed from the heart. Come now, for now there is solitude"
(Khawaja Aziz al-Rahman Majdhub, Khalifa of Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi)
Building a routine for your dhikr:
- The first step for the one who has no dhikr routine is to force themselves to do it atleast 10-20 mins daily.
- Understand how much time is being wasted on social media. There are apps now showing how much time a person has spent on their phone. Some shockingly spend several hours a day.
- Incorporate your selected dhikr around your daily routine and tasks. Whilst travelling to work a person can easily read their surah Yasin on the bus or car. Whilst going to and fro from the masjid additional adhkar can be incorporated.
- The most effective dhikr for the beginner is the formula "la ilaha illallah".

What is Sufism? A formal Explanation Part 18: The Final Two Principles
What is Sufism? A formal Explanation Part 18:
The Final Two Principles: Night Rising (Tahajjud) and Strengthening Awareness and Love for Allah.
The Eight Principle of the Path:
Staying away from excessiveness whatever form that may be: in speech, food or love of worldly things.
The Ninth Principle of the Path:
The importance of the Night Prayer (Tahajjud) in particularly waking up in the last third portion of the night.
Why in particular is this time blessed?
- There are verses in the Qur’an encouraging us to do istighfar at this time. Ya‘kub (upon him be peace) promised his sons when they confessed their wrong that he would seek forgiveness for them ‘soon’. It is reported that his intention was to pray during the later part of the night as the prayer made at that hour is answered specially.
- This is the best time to do any dhikr and focus ones attention purely on Allah. This is because there are no distractions, no duties calling and no interference from anyone.
- The last portion of the night is generally when the mischief dies down and the evil doers of the night have gone to sleep and the mischief doers of the day have not yet risen.
- The last portion of the night is also a time when the brain has rested and is now alert and fresh.
The Tenth Principle of the Path:
Reflecting on the creation of Allah and having a constant dhikr regimen.
- The universe around us has been made for us to reflect upon. Everything which it contains is a means for us to understand our Creator and to comprehend the subtleties of His wisdom. This all depends on how we are looking at it. The task for us as the Shaykh mentions is to change the way we look at things. By directing ones focus to the right objective (which is Allah), everything around us will become a means of reflection and connection to Allah.
The two benefits of reflection…
1) The awareness and consciousness of Allah strengthens.
2) The love for Allah increases
What is the objective of dhikr:
Emptying out the heart from anything which is other then Allah.
Being continuous upon your dhikr and its benefits:
- Abundance of dhikr will remove all those things preoccupying the heart away from Allah. Allah will become dominant in one’s heart and thoughts.
- The more a person remembers Allah the easier their work load becomes. By giving time to Allah and remembering Him Allah will place barakah in one’s time and efforts and complete his or her tasks with goodness.
- Engaging in the remembrance of Allah creates a light which emits from the heart. The strength of this light will leave its effect on the rest of the limbs giving a person the strength to carry out good deeds and turn one away from the love of this dunya.
- A quote mentions “the one who is given the ability to do dhikr has been given the plan of wilayah (close friendship with Allah)”. The greatest thing a person can be doing is remembering Allah. As mentioned in the Qur’an “Remember Me and I will remember you..” A person feels elated if a notable, well-known, respected person makes mention of them by the words ‘I remembered you’, so what can be said in the case here when it is no other than the Lord of all the Worlds remembering His lowly servant.

Overeating and Excessive Sexual Desire (Through Ghazali's Ihya')
Al-Ghazali was one of the most prominent and influential philosophers, theologians, jurists, and mystics of Sunni Islam. He was of Persian origin.
Islamic tradition considers him to be a Mujaddid, a renewer of the faith who, according to the prophetic hadith, appears once every century to restore the faith of the ummah ("the Islamic Community").His works were so highly acclaimed by his contemporaries that al-Ghazali was awarded the honorific title "Proof of Islam" (Hujjat al-Islam).
Al-Ghazali believed that the Islamic spiritual tradition had become moribund and that the spiritual sciences taught by the first generation of Muslims had been forgotten. That resulted in his writing his magnum opus entitled Ihya 'ulum al-din ("The Revival of the Religious Sciences").Among his other works, the Tahāfut al-Falāsifa ("Incoherence of the Philosophers") is a significant landmark in the history of philosophy, as it advances the critique of Aristotelian science developed later in 14th-century Europe.

I Am As My Servant Thinks Of Me
Shaykh Abdur-Rahman (hafizahullah) continues to explain how the seeker must understand that Allah is the ultimate Benefactor, and thinking the creation to be the source of any benefit can lead one to becoming dishonoured in the sight of Allah. The seeker should abandon those desires which move them to acquire what people have. By this ambitious desire they have abandoned the Generous Lord and turned toward a needy servant. This will only plant the seeds of disgrace. Shaykh then advises that in order to cultivate the seeds of contentment and be honoured in the sight of Allah the seeker must keep honourable thoughts of their Master Most High and understand Allah to be the fulfiller of all needs. Allah gives to His servants according to how they think of Him as mentioned in a narration “I am as my servant thinks of Me”.

A Heart Not Distracted By The World
Shaykh Abdur-Rahman (hafizahullah) explains that one of the main obstacles for the aspirant in reaching Allah is when they have too many links to the world. The Shaykh explains that the problem with this is that the aspirant begins to believe that there benefit and harm comes from the dunya (its people/objects) and not from Allah. This belief goes against the true conviction of faith that everything lies in the hands of Allah. The aspirant must understand that the Ultimate Benefactor and the only one who can cause distress is Allah, and thinking another to be the cause is a sign of a faulty heart and a weakness in ones iman. A sound heart is one which has its hope fully attached to its Creator and not on the creation. As Allah mentions in the Qur’an: “On that day none (wealth/children) will avail you except the one who comes to Allah with a sound heart.”

"When my mother heard the news of my Islam, she flew into a rage. She came up to me and said: "O Sa'd! What is this religion that you have embraced which has taken you away from the religion of your mother and father...?
By God, either you forsake your new religion or I would not eat or drink until I die. Your heart would be broken with grief for me and remorse would consume you on account of the deed, you have done and people would censure you forever more.'
'Don't do (such a thing), my mother,' I said, 'for I would not give up my religion for anything.' However, she went on with her threat... For days she neither ate nor drank. She became emaciated and weak."
"Hour after hour, I went to her asking whether I should bring her some food or something to drink but she persistently refused, insisting that she would neither eat nor drink until she died or I abandoned my religion. I said to her, 'Yaa Ummaah! In spite of my strong love for you, my love for Allah and His Messenger is indeed stronger.
By Allah, if you had a thousand souls and each one depart one after another, I would not abandon this religion for anything.' When she saw that I was determined she relented unwillingly and ate and drank."

Said ibn Zayd (May Allah be Pleased With Him)
Sa'id became a Muslim not later than 614.
His wife Fatima was also an early convert. At first they kept their faith secret because Fatima's brother Umar was a prominent persecutor of Muslims. Khabbab ibn al-Aratt often visited their house and read the Qur'an to them.
One day Umar (RA) entered their house while Khabbab (RA) was reading and demanded to know what they were reading. When they denied that anything had been read, Umar seized Sa'id and knocked him to the floor. Fatima stood up to defend her husband, and Umar hit her so hard that she bled. The couple admitted that they were Muslims. At the sight of the blood, Umar was sorry for what he had done, and asked to see what they had been reading.
